we'd like to start things off by saying that good holsters these days are so common that with just a little bit of research there's no way you won't be able to find a good one some of you may ask how do you know if a holster is any good here are some quick guidelines the holster must protect the trigger a good holster will be sure to cover up your handgun's trigger so that you can't inadvertently pull it upon draw sure with the advent of striker fired pistols the use of the trigger safety has become prevalent and it greatly reduces the risk of accidental discharge all by itself but an extra layer of protection from your holster can mean a world of difference in the most stressful situations the holster must use sturdy material since time and memorial firearms enthusiasts have been using leather holsters to carry their guns around ones made out of kydex started to become popular in the last couple of decades thanks to its availability and the ease of manufacture and these days hybrid kydex leather holsters are becoming the norm as they offer the durability strength and retention of kydex and the comfort of leather these hybrid holsters are the bee's knees the holster must have good retention in the days of old leather and nylon holsters used a strap secured by a button or velcro to wrap behind the handgun's handle so it doesn't fall off when the operator has to run around jump or move about it's effective but cumbersome during times when the handgun has to be drawn quickly as the strap has to be unbuttoned unvelcroed first kydex these days commonly feature an adjustable retention giving it a good grip on your handgun without the need for a strap which allows for faster draws the holster has to have good concealability inside the waistband carry using inside the waistband holsters are becoming the most preferred way of carrying a handgun these days and for good reason since the glock 26 was released more than two decades ago micro compacts and sub compacts have been the dominant ccw choice as they're small and extremely easy to conceal that said if you're having trouble concealed carrying a full size 1911 using an outside the waistband holster try carrying a springfield hellcat in an iwb holster you're welcome the holster must provide room for a solid purchase on the handgun's grip beware of certain holster types that cover a portion of or the whole grip of your handgun the manufacturer might have your safety in mind when they designed these holsters but if you can't get a proper hold of your handgun's grip during a stressful situation such that you can't draw aim and shoot in one fluid motion that holster might cost you your life with all that said let's take a look at our top stupid holsters number one we have the urban carry holster don't be blinded by its 4 out of 5 star rating on amazon if you carefully check the reviews the holsters cons far outweigh the pros the holster is unique although not in a good way and uses an entirely different concept such that instead of drawing your concealed carry weapons you need to draw the entire holster from where you concealed it it's only after pulling it out that you can draw your ccw confused yet think of it this way instead of being able to draw an aim using one swift fluid motion you have to pull the holster out with just enough force if you end up yanking it it'd send the holster along with your handgun flying out of your pants all bets are off when the bad guys get a hold of your gun so why do most people have problems with the urban carry holster as far as common sense goes whenever you wear a belt you keep it as tight on your waist as you can humanly stand but just enough that it holds your pants in place without cutting the blood supply off to your feet since you have to run your belt through the urban carry holsters hoops a titan belt makes for a hard draw and it gets even harder if you're like most of us middle-aged folks with a huge belly that's testimony to years of incessant eating and drinking in my opinion spending 50 bucks on an unreliable contraption like this holster just isn't worth it and that's on top of the hours you'll spend practicing drawing your gun but if you think the urban carry holster is bad it gets worse the company that manufactured it had the audacity to create a gen 2 of all things with just a glance you know where the urban carry g2 is going their website has all the marketing points down so that people who aren't in the know get the impression of how amazing this holster is but the manufacturer totally skipped the part where they're supposed to provide info on the generational improvements this gt should have over the first one which if there aren't any would totally defeat the purpose of calling this version g2 number two we have the proud right wingers bicep holster quick disclaimer we're mostly right-wingers here because you know how the left had us send our guns in the second amendment etc etc come on man just look at this holster how are you supposed to draw your gun from it so let's see how this thing works it looks like what you get is an elastic band that wraps around your bicep and there's a second layer of elastic band just on top of it this second layer holds your handgun and for retention they use a strap with velcro to hold the handgun securely in place it doesn't look too different from the shoulder bands people in the gyms use to hold their cell phone in place while they work out the thing about those shoulder bands is a cell phone has trouble staying in place how would you expect a fully loaded desert eagle to stay in place even with that velcro strap number three on our list is the versacarry there's nothing wrong with innovating and to be honest these guys really only tried what they did was instead of manufacturing standard holsters they designed their own so that it stands out from all the other holsters on the market how does their design stand out they use a little protruding tube-like thing people refer to as either a stem or a pipe your handgun rests on the holster with that thing inside the barrel which in theory securely holds the handgun in place yes in theory only because news of owners of some versacarry complaining about that little thing breaking is so common it's not even funny the company also doesn't recommend that you holster your handgun with a loaded chamber so what's the point of having that decocker on your double action single action pistol or that thumb safety on your 1911 if you can't carry it with a bullet in the chamber another problem with it at least with their iwb models is the fact that once you draw your handgun it's impossible to reholster it without pulling the entire holster out of your pants first granted if you're not living in a crime infested community the chances of you needing to draw your ccw more than a few times every day while walking the streets are minimal so you probably won't need to re-holster but why bother with the versacarry at all when conventional holsters let you re-holster it well the last real problem again with their iwb models is the fact that there's nothing between your leg and the surface of the gun that's not covered if you're as sweaty as i am all the sweat coming out of your leg will go straight to your gun's finish this isn't too much of a problem if the gun you're carrying has a stainless or hard chrome finish but if it doesn't then you better be prepared to give your handgun some tlc as soon as you're done carrying it for the day otherwise your gun will inevitably rust and finally number four let's talk about uncle mike's holsters now i understand there are some of you budget-minded folks among our audience who happen to like uncle mike's holsters and you're probably hating on us now as we speak we have nothing against people who like uncle mike's holsters but we don't like the fact that uncle mike only creates one size fits all types of holsters there used to be a time when uncle mike's only sold budget holsters but these days they offer one size fits all types of holsters that cost just shy of a hundred bucks these holsters aren't any good being one size fits all these holsters don't fit a single handgun the way custom-made holsters fit the handguns they're made for the retention is awful if not non-existent and the fit and finish are just so bad these holsters are a recipe for buyer's remorse it just doesn't make sense to buy a 500 or 400 or even a 300 ccw piece only to get an uncle mike's holster for any price i'm not telling you to buy the most expensive holster you can find but don't skimp out on it either because you never know when your life may depend on it get a quality kydex holster specifically built for your handgun or even better get a kydex leather hybrid holster so you get the best of both worlds you can thank me later so there you have it our top stupid holsters list if you feel like we might
