Man, disappointing to see popsci go in the direction of clickbaity videos like this.

whether it defies physics or it's completely revolutionary we take a look at some of the most bizarre strangest and unique engines out there a number 10 to huland kugel motor this motor contends for having one of the most unique engine designs which also has a few different variations as well the hybrid version of this motor can run a lot of different things including diesel gas biofuels and even hydrogen the motor acts as a four-stroke and has curved Pistons which directly drive a road hitting generator the company claims that it is lighter since it does have 60% less parts when compared to a normal reciprocating engine and the basic engine also produces around 104 horsepower so it's nothing crazy but we can hopefully see it in a hybrid vehicle in the near future at number 9 - v8 paper engine so when most of us think of engines we're probably thinking about metal fuel and horsepower but when Creator has sidestepped this mentality and built a workable v8 paper engine model it produces very little power and it runs on air but it can also move a toy car it's also very small and it only has a piston stroke of 6 millimeters the same ingenious creator has also made a few different types of paper engines so just make sure you check out his youtube channel and let's just hope that he doesn't try to add fuel to any of its ingenious creations number eight the bizarre free-piston engine the search Allsup's wad Center is filling their fourth generation prototype engine which is also completely different from anything you'd find in a car the free piston engine is designed for hybrid vehicles and it's composed of two opposing combustion chambers which drive a linear motor generator there's no crankshaft or crank case so technically it is a little bit lighter than a regular engine and the generator can also theoretically control the piston position which would also result in greater efficiency the next prototype will be a four cylinder 800 cc 24 kilowatt model but we'll just have to wait and see if it can overcome the vibration issues which usually resolve from two opposing cylinder designs at number seven the old park engine this is another engine which kind of looks like the free piston engine but it's quite a bit different and it's definitely something that you don't see every day there's a total of four Pistons with each pair opposing each other traveling half the distance as a normal piston in a regular engine there are also no cylinder heads or valve train components so the old pack is considerably smaller and wider compared to a conventional engine I personally like the old pack a little bit more than the free piston since the opposed twin cylinder design would reduce friction quite a bit and their prototype has shown promising results [Applause] at number six the strange Duke engine when I first saw a concept video of this new design that was a bit skeptical on how it actually run and overcome friction but the company is marched on continue to work on a unique design and eventually produce an impressive five cylinder three litre prototype engine the company claims that the prototype is lighter and smaller compared to conventional engines but we'll just have to wait and see if it really does have a dependable lifespan surprisingly the counter-rotating cylinders and crankshaft cancel out the gyroscopic reactions and seem to have solved most of the vibration issues and I really do think it's a really cool design but hopefully we can see the engine make it into some motorcycles and even light aircraft [Music] at number five the groundbreaking Sabre engine if you haven't heard there's a new revolutionary hybrid design being built by reaction engines the Sabre engine which also has a cool title by the way can go up to Mach 5.4 and air breathing mode and then it switches to a rocket mode propelling the craft to a mind-blowing orbital speed of Mach 25 so the benefits of this engine is that it's a hundred percent reusable and it could be scaled for a variety of applications and not just space and not surprisingly the company has secured another 60 million dollars in funding with the engine being ultimately built by 2020 now I really do think that this could be the answer to hypersonic flight and we'll just have to wait and see if it is the answer to space travel and number four the bacterial spore engine just when you thought you've seen everything Columbia University has come up with one of the most original ideas out there it's truly 100% renewable and the bacterial spores like the nuts they soak up water and they shorten when the water evaporates so given this idea 100 of these bacterial spores are arranged in an even pattern and they eventually powered a small wheel and propel the small bottle car forward even though it's only four inches a minute so this is definitely not the most practical engine out there but it does win in helping win the most unique engine designs which is hard from nature itself at number three there were possible solar Stirling engine if you ever see a giant huge satellite dish in the middle of the desert it might just be the repulsed range Stirling engine instead of using really expensive photovoltaic cells that dish acts as a solar collector and heats hydrogen gas to drive Pistons in an engine the concept is nothing new and lots of crafty hobbyists have built their own version of the solar Stirling engine it's just that nobody has ever tackled a project this big before but the real challenge is figuring out how to store the kilowatts of power for nighttime usage and perhaps raposo will build the geothermal Stirling engine next time at number two the e M space drive engine surrounded in controversy the M Tribe could revolutionize space travel and redefine understanding of physics itself it actually divides Newton's momentum law of conservation and it produces propulsion without any fuel technically the drive works by having a magnetron pushing microwaves into a short and and very slowly propelling the craft forward so it's nothing crazier fast it gets even stranger though as there's claims saying that the drive is actually pushing against virtual plasma which actually faces in and out of our reality and one company is already building mini satellites which will have this drive so if the satellites do hold themselves in orbit it will prove that the e/m drive is actually real at the great number 1 the coordinates egg-free valve camless engine the swedish company has designed and built revolutionary components including a direct drive which replaces a gearbox and one of the world's first full carbon fiber wheel it's free valve Kalmus engine is also a true innovation and it's the first of its kind there is no camshaft or throttle body all you pneumatic actuators on top of each cylinder so this gives you complete control over every cylinder in each valve so you can drastically improve efficiency and shut down cylinders altogether this new engine is actually lighter and theoretically cheaper to build and it's not just meant for those big fancy supercars but actually for cheaper production cars which most of us drive so that is why it's different and it's truly innovative and who knows maybe your next car will just have a free valve catalyst engine so once again thanks for watching please
