He was a gentlemen (excuse the pun) for walking over and helping them up or offering a hug.
Watching that video what amazed me was how great of a sport he was
In the early parts of his career, Tyson was a very technical boxer with impressive defensive skills which he used well, incredible speed, and amazing use of angles.
It's annoying when people talk about him like he had nothing but power going on for him. He was a strategic fighter, not a brawler. No doubt, later in his career, he became a brawler who was just after a one-punch KO. But for the most part, he put in a lot of effort setting up the KO, and not just looking for an easy opening.
Mike Tyson was absolutely brilliant at evading his opponents attacks and used his body positioning and leverage better than most. Also, if you pay attention to many of his 1-hit knockouts, they are preceded by a quick feint to divert his opponents' defenses.
If he wasn't a great boxer, he wouldn't have been a great boxer. He deserved more credit than just being a puncher.
Tyson was a problem for most boxers because there's no way that technical skill can stop raw power. You can dance and evade, but if you spend the entire fight avoiding contact you will lose by decision. If you wanted to win you had to expose yourself to that power, and Mike only had to ding most guys once.
In his prime the only ways to beat him would be knock him out early or go the distance and try to win the later rounds when he's tired. Most guys elected to try for the KO and ended up on their back. Can't say I blame them though, the idea if trying to stand in there guarding for 4 or 5 rounds while Tyson whomps on you is not very appealing.
He used tp get 100,000 bonus for knockouts.
Tyson's confidence in the ring is astonishing. But humility after the fight was even better. I hate hearing about MMA and UFC because all you hear is a bunch of kids threatening to beat each other up and how much better they are than the other person. When they knock each other out they always run off and beat their chests like a gorilla like they're a badass.
In this, every time Mike KO'd someone, he walked off confidently and a majority of the time would run over to make sure they were okay, help him them up, and sometimes give them a "good fight" hug. If he was still fighting today I would watch just for his sportsmanship at the end.
Why not both?
You wanna see how good Mike actually was, look up the hour or so of sparring. Watch him fight McCall. That shit was my Bible and I learned all my core movements from it. His feet were probably the only thing I cut from learning.
