it's time for another top ten airplane video and today we're going over the top 10 fastest home-built airplanes so let's get started for this list we're only considering planes that are propeller driven built from plans or a kit and no one-of-a-kind aircraft also keep in mind that these top speeds may vary as each plane has its own modifications from the Builder starting at number 10 we have the quickie Q 200 derived from the single-seat design by the legendary Burt Rutan the two-seat quickie Q 200 is a unique composite biplane canard most commonly powered by a hundred horsepower continental engine this plane can reach speeds of over a hundred eighty miles per hour the quickie might be the best use of only a hundred horses flying around today [Applause] [Music] [Applause] flying in at number nine you have the classic Whitman tailwind designed by the late Steve Whitman in the early 1950s the tailwind is one of the oldest home-built experimental to be certified to carry a passenger it features a steel tubing fuselage wood wings and fabric covering and despite its old design it has proven to be one of the best and fastest experimental zout there with some builds reaching speeds upwards of 220 miles per hour [Applause] like the quicky number eight stems from a successful Burt Rutan design introduced in 1989 the bare coot is basically a highly modified rutan long-ez and features many improvements that make it one of the fastest home-built canards out there it's a two-seat pusher configuration with a retractable landing gear made from mostly fiberglass and carbon fiber many builders report top speeds of over 245 miles per hour it's like having a personal fighter jet [Music] [Applause] number seven comes from a family known for speed designed by Lance heir the legacy is a low-wing two-seat composite aircraft most builds feature a 310 horsepower continental IO 550 which propels the plane to a top speed of 276 miles per hour it's sleek design not only help it achieve those high speeds but make it an efficient airplane only burning 15 gallons per hour at 250 miles per hour these characteristics make the Lancer legacy a popular choice at the Reno Air Races flying in is a competitor to the Lancer legacy number six races past as a Stoddard Hamilton Glasair three like the legacy the Glasser three is a low-wing two-seat composite aircraft commonly powered by a 300 horsepower engine the Glasair 3 can reach speeds of 290 miles per hour aside from being known for speed the Glasair III can also handle many basic aerobatics making it a favorite among the home-built experimental Zout there [Music] as we get to number five now would be a great time to hit that subscribe button I have a good library of aviation videos that's constantly growing also be sure to check out the links in the description to see where I got these awesome clips as we inch closer to number one we're starting to see some serious speed with the quest air venture now don't let the shape of this airplane fool you because this is a serious machine some call it the 300 mile per hour egg because that's right this plane starts to fly into the 300 mile per hour territory amazingly the curve shapes of this airplane are made with an all-metal design with some unique control surface features these are called flap don't blink because you might miss it racing past at number four we have the seriously fast Swearingen SX 300 divided by Ed Swearengen in the early 1980s the SX 300 can reach speeds upwards of 320 miles per hour like the quest air venture the SX three hundred features an all-metal design and was created to set new speed standards of home-built aircraft it's no wonder that it often makes an appearance at the Reno Air Races [Music] [Applause] with the help of a turbine engine and a pressurized cockpit number three flies high as the Lancer Evolution the evolution can be built with an 867 horsepower of Pratt & Whitney pt6 which pulls it at speeds upwards of three hundred and seventy nine miles per hour with a cockpit pressurization of 6.5 psi the evolution can comfortably fly at altitudes of 28,000 feet the evolution is definitely the ultimate travellers plane not to be confused with the legendary world war ii p-51 mustang the Thunder Mustang is a 75% scale copy the Thunder Mustang also proves that you don't always need a turbine engine to reach some serious speed by using an engine adapted from boat racing the Thunder Mustang can reach speeds of 390 miles per hour and in some cases can outperform the original p-51 Mustang and it even sounds like the original two [Music] now it's time for the ultimate speed machine number one blows past the competition as a turbine legend designed in the 1990s the legend is built out of carbon fiber and uses engines of up to 1000 70 horsepower the turbine legend is truly a personal fighter jet with some builds reaching speeds of nearly 460 miles per hour with a rate of climb of 10,000 feet per minute I can only imagine how amazing it would be to fly in this aircraft if you enjoyed this video make sure to hit that like button and subscribe to my channel also feel free to drop a comment below about your favorite high speed home-built aircraft and until next time blue skies and safe flying [Music]
