is there anything as enticing in life as the promise of an adventure that most human of impulses that compels us to journey beyond the boundaries of our home to explore uncharted lands and document the discoveries we make along the way forgo the beaten path my friends embrace the wilderness dive into some shrubbery and kiss a few trees there is no frontier too wild that cannot be tamed by the unstoppable force that is human ambition journey on embark once more into the great unknown oh i wasn't on about the actual outdoors god no the outside world is terrible it lacks the thrill of adventure that only video games can provide i mean you can't liberate an enemy camp on your way to a sainsbury's can you can't help out a tired villager who's lost his cloth outside of the shoe zone in macclesfield i mean you can but don't trust me on that one no other genre in video games captures this sense of discovery quite like open world games titles that provide players with epic maps to explore and conquer hello i'm liam from push square and this is our list of the best open world games on playstation 4. before we start it is worth mentioning that every single game on this list is also playable on the playstation 5 thanks to backwards compatibility anyway enough of that let's get started hey do you want to feel old skyrim turns 10 this year oh made myself feel bad despite being a decade old the elder scrolls 5 skyrim still features one of the most captivating and well realized open worlds that can be experienced on a playstation platform tamriel's northernmost provenance may look a tad dreary in 2021 compared to locations found in some of the more recent releases on this list but skyrim's frosted peaks and vast plains retain a certain charm that's hard to beat yes it lacks some of the colour and vibrancy that can be found in other entries in this series but skyrim's palette of autumnal oranges wintry whites and solemn grays gives it a very specific look that is instantly recognizable it is cruel unflinchingly so but also quiet peaceful and still exploring skyrim's expansive map feels like a genuine journey on your way towards the next major city you'll frequently stumble upon hidden caves abandoned farmsteads or other equally memorable areas that contain unique stories that can be easily missed bethesda's fantasy epic is as much fun to explore in 2021 as it was all the way back in 2011. with the release of horizon zero dawn killzone developer guerilla games achieved the impossible not only did they deliver one of the console's best exclusives they created one of the best open worlds ever realized on a playstation platform featuring perhaps the most unique setting on this entire list horizon takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where modern-day society has been obliterated by herds of animal-like machines trading the bleak irradiated wastelands so often associated with the post-apocalypse for lush vibrant environments instead horizon depicts a world overtaken as much by nature than by the monstrous robots who traps throughout it it's a densely populated and varied landscape transporting the player from snow-capped peaks to desert-like valleys lush forests and ancient ruined cities with technology turned against them human settlements consist of numerous wooden huts open fires and other primitive amenities the contrast between hulking sci-fi adversaries and a society of people stuck within the hunter-gatherer stage of civilization results in a truly intoxicating location unlike anything else on the platform a beautiful inventive title that is one of the playstation 4's finest at number eight we have fallout 4 the second fallout game to be developed by elder scrolls creators bethesda game studios fallout 4's post-apocalyptic depiction of boston is a thrill to explore frozen for 200 years in an underground vault players emerge to find the surface obliterated by a devastating nuclear war that has destroyed the majority of the united states fallout's wasteland is completely desolate a location ravaged by the effects of a global conflict that flattened cities and mutated fauna into grotesque monstrosities however this isn't your everyday depiction of a post-nuclear armageddon fallout's greatest strength lies in its alternate reality setting which blends 1950s iconography with retro-futuristic technology exploring the ruins of former boston is a treat in of itself but its satirical depiction of capitalism and 50s americana makes for a unique open world that feels distinctly fallout there are so many locations to discover here from a cobbled together city built within a baseball stadium to a galleon from the 1700s populated entirely by robots and that's to say nothing of the game's vaults underground locations that ushered humans safely below the surface as the bombs fell before secretly performing twisted experiments on their sheltering population uncovering these vaults and unearthing the twisted secrets they hold is one of the game's best features you can even build your own settlements leaving your personal mark on this barren open world with the release of assassin's creed origins ubisoft decided it was about time they shook things up after releasing an assassin's creed game every single year since 2009 the company put the series on a long overdue hiatus in 2016 returning with assassin's creed origins in 2017. origins represented a fresh start for the franchise introducing loot-based rpg mechanics and a renewed focus on combat but one element that remained was the series impeccable ability to create stunning open worlds delivering a beautiful recreation of ancient egypt that is one of the best locations in assassin's creed history from its intrinsically detailed cities to its wide open deserts origins features a diverse range of landscapes to explore this is a breathtaking open world one that sees you scaling the pyramids in one moment before sailing down the nile in the next it's a vast lavish environment crammed full of things to do there are countless locations to uncover memorable side quests to complete and dynamic encounters with roaming mercenaries to overcome origen's world feels alive in a way no other assassin's creed game that came before it managed to achieve whether you're traversing the golden sands on camelback or observing a sparkling city from above with the help of your trusty eagle companion origins is a delight to explore honestly origins is probably my favorite assassin's creed game i think a lot of people gave up on the series after syndicate but then returned with odyssey and valhalla into to shame because origins is just pure magic honestly i'd really recommend you give this a chance it's a fantastic open world rpg i've just realized i'm wearing my microphone outside of my shirt i just got this today this is the first time i'm using it how embarrassing thanks to gta 5's astronomical popularity it's easy to sometimes forget just how much of an achievement rockstar's california-inspired location truly is modeled on real life los angeles and its surrounding areas gta 5 city of los santos feels alive every pedestrian every car every animal moves through this space like it's a real location never before and very rarely since has the illusion of reality being pulled off in a video game as flawlessly as it has been here there are just so many layers to gta 5's world while the rich reside in rockford hills downtown los santos is home to abject poverty and its population of homeless citizens dock workers load cargo along the coast his couple saunter along vespucci beach trailer parks bake and the desert sun while wild animals prowl the peak of mount chiliad all of this is available for you to explore as one of the game's three playable characters each one familiar with very different areas of the game's map michael trevor and franklin have a history with this city friends and enemies within its borders stories that immerse you further and further into this world this is best demonstrated when swapping between them the camera soaring above the city before zooming in on your new protagonist who was always in the middle of performing some kind of activity relevant to their personality they live here and by extension you start to believe that you do too it may have originally launched on the playstation 3 but that doesn't stop gta 5 from remaining one of the most impressive open world games to date in at number five we have death stranding another open world game that takes place in a post-apocalyptic depiction of the united states but death stranding isn't bleak like fallout or lush and vibrant like horizon it sort of sits somewhere in the middle it's cold but beautiful quiet and lonely and that is very much by design playing as sam porter bridges a sort of sci-fi delivery rider the majority of your time in death stranding is spent navigating its expansive open world completely alone slowly conquering its natural peaks and troughs as you attempt to deliver objects to human settlements located deep underground this isn't your traditional open world map there's not thousands of icons to tick off one by one no enemy camps to liberate or stereotypical filler that gets in your way there are barely any other humans that roam this world no animals no signs of life instead you'll spend the majority of your time with death stranding embarking on solitary excursions throughout this landscape the environment is much your enemy is the game's roaming adversaries time fall or bts the most devastating thing that can happen to you is simply tripping up before losing your precious cargo down the side of a cliff steep paths or treacherous falls are the toughest enemies you'll face on your adventure however the landscape also serves as a canvas for social interaction with other players you're able to build shortcuts that make the game easier for those playing online and you can also take advantage of other constructions placed down by other players to aid you on your journey as well the world of death stranding is an integral part of its overall structure it is both a friend and an enemy beautiful yet deadly it's one of the best on playstation 4. at number four we have assassin's creed odyssey remember earlier when i was saying all those lovely things about assassin's creed origins yeah cool well odyssey is basically the same game just in greece instead of egypt yes odyssey is mechanically similar to the previous game in the series origins but what it may lack in original gameplay it more than makes up for in remarkable open world design odyssey's ancient greece is gargantuan recreating the archipelago as it was in 422 bc reintroducing the much-loved naval system found in previous entries players can sail between islands with their own personalized crew soaking in the mediterranean sun as they travel towards their next adventure if origins was a field trip odyssey feels like a holiday with vast deserts replaced with golden beaches and scenic mountain vistas like origins odyssey is packed with things to do locations to discover and quests to complete it's big maybe even too big but you can't deny how impressive an achievement it truly is ubisoft spent two whole generations attempting to perfect the art of the open world with odyssey they came as close as they've ever come before or since ghost of tsushima is not only one of the finest action rpgs on the playstation 4 it also plays host to one of its best open worlds the island of tsushima is an open world with layers golden forests are located next to burning villages fields of flowers border on fog covered swamps a ruined pathway leads to an impeccable shrine perched atop a mountain peak ghost of tsushima is quite simply gorgeous its use of light and colour creates a world that begs you to stop and take it all in so frequently that you'll stop to activate the game's photo mode a little more often than you may care to admit better yet the island of tsushima is navigated in an untraditional way with no mini-map protagonist jin sakai must use the guiding wind to direct him to his next objective the whole world twisting and bending in the breeze to point you towards your next destination additionally smoke plumes and tiny birds will tempt you away from the path well traveled revealing side quests and other optional activities it's an island full of wildlife roaming bands of enemies and villagers seeking refuge tsushima may be at war but among the devastation there are boundless moments of beauty to savor along the way a staggering sight to behold at number two we have the witcher 3 wild hunt now cyberpunk 2077 may be the only game people think about when they hear the name cd project red but you can't deny that their ps4 debut is one of the greatest games on the console the witcher 3 may take place in a fantasy world complete with monsters magic and other supernatural elements but the majority of its appeal stems from just how grounded it is there's a maturity to its quests its characters and even its open world the isles of skellige feel lived in they are rife with poverty famine and disease people are hungry angry desperate there is death here no matter where you turn there is darkness hidden in plain sight but there is beauty here too a sunset reflected within the surface of a gently flowing river a lush forest swinging in the early morning breeze a bustling port filled with laughter and life it's a world as complex as the game's central narrative a location that focuses on the good just as much as it does the bad and in the middle of it there's you a character steeped in pre-established law someone who genuinely feels like they belong in this world and aren't just passing through as geralt of riviera a monster slain witcher for hire you exist within the witcher 3 you live and love and work within the confines of its scattered islands even though there's plenty to do the game's map screen is as littered with map markers as any modern ubisoft title it never feels like unnecessary filler everything has context it all holds a purpose and the world itself is interwoven into these additional stories that lie just off the beaten path it is a remarkable achievement an open world that is rich and rewarding beautiful and cruel it's one of the finest ever made in deserving of its spot this high up on our list in at number one we have the rootinest tootinist cowboy shootinist game ever released red dead redemption 2 yeehaw etc etc rockstar's wild west epic delivered their greatest open world yet like the majority of games on this list red dead's frontier location feels real as much as the game's narrative is based on classic western fiction its fascinating depiction of the dying days of cowboys and their way of life is very much rooted in real world history spanning a number of states on the united states west coast red dead 2 portrays america on the cusp of sweeping industrialization where the lawless west is finally on the verge of being corralled by the government as protagonist arthur morgan you don't quite belong here anymore but not in the video game definition of that concept where you're some kind of overpowered player created avatar you are a dying breed in the one place you've ever called home and the game frequently reminds you of this fact throughout your time with it the world is vast and harsh it's populated with bad people who do bad things and you should know because you're one of them from an environmental perspective it's astonishing a technical marvel that still looks ground breaking an entire console generation later rockstar has provided one of the most highly detailed open worlds ever created it's a hand-crafted love letter to the american wilderness gorgeous yet terrifying animals roam between the trees travelers slowly meander along the dusty wagon ways and drunk cowboys engage in fistfights within ramshackle one horse towns it's incredible the whole game has purposefully slow paced and methodical with journeys taking extended amounts of time as you explore the open west it's punctuated with explosive brutal action that cuts through the peacefulness of the game's valleys and mountain ranges this is open world design at its finest where the world itself is as much a narrative tool as its characters and where natural exploration is rewarded with contextually relevant side missions it caters to a thirst for adventure allowing players to exist as a person within this virtual depiction of a world that feels genuinely real absurdly detailed and masterfully crafted in every single possible way red dead redemption 2 is the best open world game on playstation 4. hello welcome to the end of the video did you agree with our list of the best open
