hi everyone welcome back to my channel my name is amanda rose and on today's video i am going to be talking about tips for teaching using zoom i as you guys know i taught at summer school for six weeks and we had to use zoom every single day and i realized that there were a lot of challenges that came along with using zoom daily that i didn't really have a chance to experience when we first went to remote learning because we weren't required to use it every day in all honesty we all were just like trying to keep the boat afloat right and so now i think that a lot of schools are choosing to go remote or even hybrid using zoom or google meets often i really did get to experience a lot of issues um that i'm trying to brainstorm for and trying to prevent when i actually do go back to school in september so i put together a list of 10 things some of these things you guys might already know but again it's just what i noticed while i was doing zoom and so i hope that they're helpful for you they are in no particular order i literally just put down a list of 10 things so please make sure that if you haven't already that you subscribe to my channel and that you also like this video so let's get into it tips for teaching while using zoom so the first thing i would suggest which would be like in any other classroom is to set out student expectations what are behavior expectations just so that everyone is clear on how you expect them to act even though they're in their homes pretty safe to say that when students are at home or when anyone is at home even when i'm at home we can feel a lot more lacks and it does break that whole i'm in a classroom setting this is academic vibe so i think it is very important to talk about student behavioral expectations just so that it feels as much like school as possible so some things that i noticed was even just as simple as sharing hey everyone has to contribute to the conversation at least once everyone has to write in the chat at least once everyone has to say something out loud at least once so just setting that expectation like i need to hear from everyone at least once regardless of how you choose to participate whether it be through chat or whether it be through you verbally saying something unmuting yourself but to kind of set the tone that you expect students to participate because if you saw my previous video you know that i had a really hard time with student engagement another thing is that i would tell students if they feel comfortable to show their faces i know there's also a lot of controversy surrounding this because we're they're letting us into their homes and everyone has different living situations i 100 understand however i do think that it does help if students are showing their faces so the ones that are comfortable with doing it definitely i would uh bring that up and say hey if you are comfortable please show your face it would really help make this feel more like a classroom second thing i would say is share a lot of images and videos now i don't know about you guys but in the actual classroom a lot of my powerpoints are set up where i'm displaying vocabulary and students have to copy the vocabulary down and there's about a good eight minutes in my lessons where students are taking notes that doesn't really work so much virtually so i am realizing that those are things that will probably just i'll have to share with students so that they can go back but i did realize that i had to use a lot more images and a lot more videos because just talking to your students for 20 minutes that's just way too long right the environment in a classroom is so different when you can move around and when you can kind of like be a little bit more animated but online when you're sitting down through a computer it's totally different so i would highly advise using a lot of images using a lot of videos having an image displayed when you share your powerpoint and then you can talk while students are looking through images that you're flipping through anything of the sort to kind of keep them engaged in what you're discussing because just reading off of a powerpoint oh my gosh it was boring in class but trying to do that virtually snoozefest like you really have to monitor and manage how much time you're using with actual words on a screen versus images and visuals so that leads me into my third point make sure that when you are sharing a video that you click share audio on the screen as well in zoom because if not then they're just hearing it through your computer screen which is not clear at all so make sure that you're clicking share audio so that they do get the full experience and it's not muffled because they're hearing it secondhand versus directly through the computer so make sure with that little tip if you are going to show uh videos that you click that next tip tip number four make sure that you are sharing your screen not sharing your powerpoint i don't know about you guys but my students even during the like first time when we went remote they kept like clicking my powerpoint and like messing with me and i was trying so hard not to get into a bad mood but they their kids you know what i'm saying like if they have the opportunity to be a little mischievous they might be and so that is something that i would highly recommend make sure that you are sharing your screen not sharing the powerpoint because if you share the powerpoint then they have access to manipulating the powerpoint also if if you want this but i would also advise turning off the annotation so if you go to settings at the top you can click i think more options and you can remove annotations for participants i personally had to do this because kids are going to scribble scrabble and it happened to me on the screen and they think it's funny and when you're sharing your screen it's really hard to see who's doing those things you don't really know how to deal with a consequence or how to like correct it at least i didn't and it really like caught me off guard so i would highly recommend disabling annotations for participants and just sharing your screen not the actual powerpoint next thing i would suggest is enabling the waiting room i think this is pretty standard for a lot of people but the waiting room for me especially because i was teaching students that i didn't know was extremely helpful uh you are allowed to then accept any student in to the zoom and it's not just people coming in as they please so the reason why i really appreciated this is because sometimes uh the students are logging in under like a different name or maybe they're using their parents phone and so it's like a parent's name and you can also write to the participants in the waiting room so for example i had a student who was under their parents phone and i didn't know who it was so i couldn't accept them in i i was too scared for security purposes so i was able to while i was teaching my class i just said hold on a second guys and i sent a message to the people in the waiting room and said hi um if you are part of this class i need you to please change your name so that i can see who is entering the room as of right now i do not have the name listed on my roster and they were able to change their name i saw who it was and i added them in so i really like that feature and i would highly suggest it next thing wi-fi i mentioned this in my last video but wi-fi was such an issue for me again i mentioned that i film in this room and our whole like system is set up in the living room and this route like our bedroom has always kind of been an issue with wi-fi but i never really thought about it um until again having to zoom daily so what i would suggest is figure out the best place in your space whether it's your house your apartment just a room wherever you're going to be teaching definitely figure out the best space for wi-fi because i experienced a lot of lagging if you have a mac you know like the little spinning colorful wheel a lot of times when i wanted to switch to another slide i have the spinning wheel and that just i don't think there is any other type of anxiety that you can feel when you see the spinning wheel in the middle of your powerpoint so i would highly advise either upgrading your wi-fi or finding a place where you know you can get the best maybe turning off other devices that are using wi-fi but that you're not using at that time i know in some districts teachers are required to go into the building and still teach um and still teach remotely but no students there so maybe your school wi-fi might actually be a better option if that is an option for you to go into the building so definitely consider all those things before you actually go in another thing i would suggest is having everything open already um on your tabs the attendance uh doc that you're going to use any worksheets that you want to send them any google classroom information all of those things take time to load and it's a lot easier to just copy and paste the link and send it in the chat a lot of times students may be confused as to what the next assignment is or where they should go and it's so easy to just click the top copy and paste the link into the chat so that students can be directed there afterwards just any little directions for next steps once the mini lesson is done and so this is just making sure that you're doing the best with transition and not spending a lot of time on transition the next thing i would suggest is using the polling option in zoom now from my understanding this is like an added feature so some schools may not have this because you have to pay for it but if your school does have it or if you're willing to like ask your school to upgrade the polling feature is awesome because you can pre-set questions in there and students can respond which is really fun and again also provides for interaction and maybe students again don't want to say anything verbally or they're a little hesitant about writing in the chat then you can create a poll even in the moment you can create a poll and have students respond that way the next thing i would suggest i saw this um teacher using padlet i've never heard of this before but when i saw her using it i thought it was the coolest thing ever and so i've already asked my school if they can purchase this for the whole school there's also like you can sign up for free but i know that the school one and having like an administrator login is probably the best option but what i enjoyed so much about this is the collaboration that can happen amongst students and it's the same thing you can create like either a board where students can put ideas they have a timeline they have a map option it's just really great for group projects when you're sending kids off into maybe like breakout rooms and you can again just copy and paste the link into the chat students can click it and then they can go and work on an assignment so i would highly suggest that um as an option i thought it would be great for like a do now where i can put the link in the chat and just say okay everyone has five minutes when you hear my voice please come back but you are required to answer the question and then we can share that with the class and we can see what everyone wrote for that answer so if you have that please comment down below and let me know if you like it or not i've seen such great reviews but i would love to know your opinion if you've used that um if you've used that resource so definitely put that down below but i thought that was a great idea to incorporate with zoom next thing i would suggest is shout out i think it's really hard to reward students when we are not in person so many of us may buy cute little erasers or pencils or whatever the case may be or write a cute little note so what i would actually suggest is like a virtual shout out board i've mentioned this in my other video sorry i keep saying that but i usually do like a student of the month and if it's for government they'll be called the politician of the month if it's for economics they'll be called the economist of the month if it's for global they can be called the historian of the month whatever play on words the mathematician of the month the scientist of the month the artist of the month or the week whatever you prefer that's um aligned with your content but i think it's really important to continue to shout students out it's a lot harder to kind of like acknowledge them and to make them feel like they're doing the right thing and they're putting in all this effort so definitely weekly having a little shout out board maybe create something on a powerpoint that looks similar to like a bulletin board in your classroom you could shout them out say a cute little blurb about what they've done that week and hopefully that is just like one little way virtually where you can acknowledge students but definitely think of ways to encourage them and keep them positive virtually because it is going to be a lot harder than doing it in person my last suggestion i think this might actually be 11 but what i would suggest is streamline resources it's going to be very confusing for students if you're using three different websites daily and then another teacher is using three different websites daily definitely figure out a way to streamline whatever you are doing hey once we meet on zoom i will share this link here or everyone has to go to google classroom first and then from google classroom i will share the links there has to be like a home base where students can go i know that a lot of teachers are also creating teacher websites that's a great idea as well you have to figure out what works for you it's going to get confusing for students if you and seven other teachers are picking different websites if parents have uh multiple students who are in school and now they're trying to keep track of what student a is doing versus student b we also have to remind ourselves of um the access that students and parents have even if they have access to technology it doesn't mean that everyone knows how to use it well keep that in mind when you are assigning things online especially in my community we have a lot of parents who speak spanish and so if their child is the one that's constantly translating trying to explain to them what the website is how to lock into things you want to make it as simple as possible streamline resources so that parents and students know exactly where to go to get information and you're picking maybe two to three websites that you're going to use throughout the semester but definitely make it user friendly and do not forget to share those links in the chat once you're done with zoom and you want students to go ahead and move on to the next assignment so those are all my tips for teaching with zoom i'm pretty sure i forgot some stuff but those are just the things that i noticed while i was teaching this summer as always please write your suggestions in the comments below i am not an expert i'm just sharing my experience you guys are also a wealth of knowledge so please write in the comments what you have seen work for yourself or if you have any questions i will try my best to get to all of them but i hope that you guys enjoyed this video and again do not forget to like it do not forget to subscribe and i will see you all in the next one
