Timeless Kitchen Countertop and Backsplash Combinations | Julie Khuu

hello everyone welcome back to the channel i'm julie and today we are breaking down my top eight kitchen countertop and backsplash combinations a majority of homeowners are looking for countertop and backsplash combinations that are elegant timeless durable easy to maintain and of course suits their aesthetic and needs with so many options out there and virtually an infinite amount of creative combinations i mean where do you even begin [Music] before we get started remember to ask yourself these three key questions when specifying materials for your kitchen number one who lives here do you have a huge family and a bunch of kids that you need to account for do you need a material that's durable easy to clean easy to maintain can resist scratches dings spills and stains how do you use your kitchen do you need a workhorse type of kitchen or do you prioritize aesthetics and just need something to look good in the heart of your home what's your budget prioritize in this order contractor then the material which finish will make more of an impact in your kitchen the countertop or the backsplash keep in mind that my tips always favor the homeowner i prefer to share advice that adds value to your home i won't share materials that typical buyers rip out when they purchase a new home some countertop materials like laminate solid surface corian and tile countertops feel dated and won't survive in a workhorse type of kitchen so factor in what you're looking for in your kitchen and source accordingly now let's break down my favorite countertop and backsplash combinations and share what i absolutely love about them solid slab this is clearly one of my favorite applications and i probably specify this type of countertop slab backsplash material for a majority of my clients the style is clean modern fresh and you only need to choose one material for a seamless look there's no grout lines there's fewer seams and depending on the size there might be no seams which makes the countertop a lot easier to clean take your time selecting the perfect slab and spend the rest of your energy sourcing the cabinets lighting fixtures and hardware the key to a great design is choosing a slab you absolutely love and carrying that slab up the backsplash watch my kitchen countertops 101 video to specify the right counter top for you now what type of material can you choose for this countertop solid slab backsplash combination natural stone is a clear favor for me i love that the inherent veins patterns and grains become the focal point of your kitchen [Music] quartz slab backsplashes are modern neutral and great if you have a minimal style or you're mixing a different look on the countertop concrete is also a great option for a minimal and industrial vibe [Music] [Music] a porcelain slab backsplash is trending on the market today think about all the things you love about a porcelain tile floor it's durable stain resistant and super easy to clean and maintain so a porcelain slab backsplash would offer you all of those great advantages it comes in monochromatic minimal uniform styles as well as marble looks [Music] now how you install these slabs is completely up to you you can find the portion of the slab in which you love the pattern and run that up your backsplash you can bookmatch two mirrored slabs together if they run in sequential order or you can be very strategic with your installation and cut out a portion of that slab for behind the range only heavy vein stone is all about a material that you have completely fallen in love with it could be a luxurious marble slab that you carry from the waterfall island all the way up to the perimeter countertops and backsplash this look is really for those looking to make an impact in their kitchen the cabinets are usually more subdued either a shaker style or flat panel so the stone becomes a star [Music] [Music] [Music] moving on to artisan tile backsplash artisan tile can be made from glass ceramic clay metal and cement artisan tile has a handmade quality to it and most people love the imperfections and unique differences in each tile if you're specifying artists and tile you're looking to make a statement with your backsplash zelich tiles are moroccan tiles and they are having a huge moment in design i actually specified zlich tiles in my last project jkid newport back bay and i love how it makes the entire kitchen just glimmer and gleam [Music] zelich tiles are ultra glossy handmade clay tiles with imperfect charm they come in all shapes and sizes and due to the imperfect nature of the glaze the color variations are also endless they're hand molded hand cut and hand glazed so no two are alike they also look different in your kitchen depending on the time of day so if you're looking for something neutral but with an artisan quality zalige can actually be quite timeless [Music] if you specify artisan tile backsplash keep the countertop simple and uniform so the patterns don't compete quartz and lightly veined natural stone are perfect to pair with artisan tile i would steer clear of granite since the pattern can sometimes get way too busy if you're inspired by color and want to inject a little bit more of a fun bold statement in your kitchen try colorful tile instead you might want a solid color to line the kitchen walls [Music] you might even want to inject some pattern while you're at it [Music] a colorful and patterned tile backsplash is for those who can commit to this bold move when specifying any statement making finish the backsplash is the star so keep the counter top minimal uniform and part of the supporting cast [Music] let's move on to one of my favorite looks for a kitchen a dark and moody vibe if dark and moody is not really your cup of tea try a light and bright white kitchen [Music] let's dissect these mixed material looks and talk about the pros and cons of each wood warms up a kitchen while marble adds an elegant touch love the look of concrete but can't deal with the hefty price tag try quartz instead so many options available that mimic the look of concrete for a fraction of the cost is your style glam and bold try a metallic brass backsplash or even a mirrored one look for a coordinating stone slab for your island with the same gold tone sprinkled throughout i'm a huge fan of stainless steel countertops for its anti-microbial non-porous qualities but it can also feel very cold try exotic natural stone on the perimeter countertops and backsplash and save the durable material of stainless steel for the surface counter you use to prep meals subway tiles might feel very basic in 2010 but i find subways very classic and timeless for a variety of styles think about how you can change subway tiles up from the traditional 50 50 offset pattern maybe try stacking the tiles one on top of the other maybe try a vertical orientation how about a herringbone pattern [Music] or maybe even try contrasting grout for a modern mix the busier the subway backsplash the more simplistic the coordinating countertop material should be my number one designer's tip that you should take away from this video if you have a slab or tile backsplash with a lot of pattern a lot of movement or a lot of color you want to keep the countertop really muted and subdued and vice versa if you have a super busy countertop you want to keep the backsplash really simple and minimal now that you understand countertop and backsplash materials a little bit better a lot of these
