today i'm going to show you how i tile my bathroom at the end of this video as you guys have requested there will be a little section telling you all the tools of note that i used in this video let's get on with it guys and remember to hold that first thing to do is hover everything loads again and again and again and again and again and again and again ensure that we haven't got any cuts that are completely tiny little slivers and that those cuts especially are not at the threshold into the bathroom the reason because of that is is that is where all the foot traffic is going to come in and out and sometimes the slithery bum traffic as well we want third cut tiles half cut tiles up to two third cut tiles so the first thing i'm going to do is i'm just going to lay a line of tiles out from the back wall there all the way up to the threshold where we're going to end our tiles there and from that i'll know where to start my tiles on that back wall so just looking at this end bit here but you guys are going to say here well look there's a massive overhang there you're just going to cut it across here in line with that threshold slither that i've had to put in and that'll be just fine the problem with that is this i'm going to be doing a brickwork style of tiling on here which means if i just lift one of these tiles up from back here and lay that roughly halfway across what do i end up with i end up with a small slither there and a small sliver there so this is what i do now i move this back to a point where i think that is a nice big bit of tile there and then i can pretty much move this back to that halfway point this will come back to the halfway point this is all roughly done by eye at the moment and i know now as well if i if i leave this here we've got a nice big bit of tile to go in there we can have a nice big bit of tile to go in here as well and that's going to work okay and i know what you're going to say in a minute i'm going to say well that means there's going to be a tiny sliver cut up the other end but it doesn't matter so much that the sliver cut is at the other end because obviously there's hardly any foot traffic on that so really that's quite a nice big cut there i'm really happy with that so what a lot of people do when they're not tiling all that much you don't say right i'm going to lay a full tile up against this wall and we're just going to run off that because any impurity in the in the the plaster work down the bottom here is going to translate further down the line when you come to lay other tiles out on it so what we do is we create our own exact plumb line that is less than a tile's width away from the wall the width of our tiles is 30 centimeters so what i'm gonna do is i'm gonna measure out do we get a nice little big chunky tile in there as well i'm going to use a bosch laser level attached to the door frame to pick out my plumb line the great thing about this is that it won't get in the way while i'm working now what we're going to do is we're going to measure off this wall a few just just a couple of different areas we made that 15 off we're making that a half cut aren't we there so let's just make a mark there and once i've got those marks i can readjust my laser so let's readjust my laser now so it's on those marks the reason i'm doing it like this is because i don't lay tiles in the way that most other people do i like to have every one of my tiles made up and cut ready for me to do it all in one big go if you think about how many cuts we have to do that's not actually that many tiles so all we need to do is name the cuts and right in the back of them what they are or even put a little sticker on top of them so when we're cutting them and when we're laying them down we know where they go usually i'd measure centers of the room over there as well and center of this room here not gonna matter on this job because we've got the bath here we've got a vanity unit in we've got a toilet going in there's no eye center if you know what i mean you might see as well that this laser keeps flashing that's because it's looking for level because it's not quite the right way up but it will ping out a full laser line let's get our first cut measured up at the back and the first one measured up at the front and get on with this job well we'd have to be absolutely spot on with this because of course we are going to have a bit of skirting board across the top of these joints got my cutter here this will be the first one i actually cut today on here so our uncut edge is going to be this one here so it's one one five so i can actually measure that up on here so just a nice bit of weight on here if they're up and on i always do one two and three wow that's actually cut a split without needing a bounce which means it splits slightly nautily there but we should be able to get away with that and look at that lays in there just perfectly so let's see how much we can save now thing is i just want to make sure that we account for our tile spaces for this cut so in a moment i'll give you a really good idea about this system but let me just quickly whop these in now right because of that i know exactly how much i want to take off and i'm not wasting a lot of tile here now so i've just got a small mark on there a small mark on there just hanging my head over the edge of this threshold to make sure we get it in the right place if you can do all your cuts on a straight tile cutter like this one then you pick you're gonna have a great day all you have to do is just use a light bit of body weight on the roller and score the tile pretty much three times and then use the rested weight to split the score right down the middle in half how easy is that [Music] [Applause] [Music] can lay just on there just like that now on the wall behind the skirting i will just write out a b c d e as many letters as there are rows of tiles and then use some sticky notes to mark on those tiles which rows and which number tiles they are [Music] so we've got to estate in this job where if i was starting from the wall that side wall and then working my way back this way it'd be okay but because that is my starting wall i've got to kind of bring everything back to that i'm going to need to get this bath out the way so i've got an area to actually kneel in and work in i'll easily be able to skip over here remember to think about that when you're planning out your job one thing that i would say you need to do is grab a michael buble and what i want you to do is put it on the side of the bath and then make a mark on the inside that correlates to the the line of the bath where it would be and then lay your boob blade down on that mark and then draw a big line if there's any tile that when you're marking out doesn't make up to that big line got a problem because that might mean when we put the side panel on you can see that gap we don't want that at all so we're going to make sure that we're always under by quite a long way so if you look here i'm using this method all around the radius of the bath i just want to reiterate that i'm going to make my mark two inches inside the plumb line mark that means we've got a nice tolerance of tiles underneath the bath to deal with any changes of how the side panel is installed so then all is going very well in here at the moment i know you guys are saying why is he doing all those why is he putting all those sticky down bits in already well just so i know exactly what's going on and also i don't want to kind of get to the end of the the job when i'm tiring i realize i've run out of them yeah so now we're going to do a cut down there now i'm using that bit of tile just over there for two cuts one of those bits is going to fit nicely in that corner piece there and the other bit is just going to run along the side of that bath bit there let's go out now and do a bit of cutting i've had this tile cut donkey's use what [Music] i actually usually have the tile the other way up this way up they do tend to slightly chip a little bit more i think i might need a new blade on this old beast as well but it's doing fine for what i need it to do at the moment just need to do some fairly basic cuts all of which are going to be covered up when the job is over and done with anyway so yeah as you can see we've now not we've only wasted this bit of tile i know some of you gonna say wear gloves the stuff honestly you're probably right this stuff is super sharp and it does get in places where you wouldn't believe but this bit this cut here i'm just going to be able to do with the slice and what do they call it i don't know there's no name for it that's going to go up in the corner and this bit here is going to go where our where our bath is going to be going over this bit here so that's going to be ready to lay in right now [Music] for getting round pipes and bits and bobs that are sticking out like architraves or anything you need to do more intricate cuts around this little vitrex molding set that i've got is absolutely brilliant for that you can just lay it down in front of the pipes that you're going to be going around push it up and then you can draw around the plastic sheaths that have been pushed back onto your tile to get an exact stencil of what you need to cut out when it came to the radiator pipes this time around i just wanted to slip a tile over the pipe so i'd need to drain the heating system down so i could take off the valves a handy tool for this is my drill pump so just pop that onto my drill pop a hose onto the drain that i deliberately left on top of the valves for this particular part of the job and then a couple of minutes later you've got the system drained down just below so you don't need to drain down all the ground floor radiators and then you're ready to mark and drill your tile [Music] well then so you're probably aware i've drained the heating system down it is quarter to five in the evening on a thursday uh and i've got the aisle army in an hour and 45 minutes so i've got this is a dark piece on here you don't usually have to wet these but i always wet them just in case uh and how i usually start doing a uh a cut like this is we've got my my main mark there i've got my other mark just coming up about here now what i tend to do is you can start these off on the side and i imagine just have a little go at it first on your own and go all right that's how it goes it goes up like that we start off like that and we just start scratching it [Music] and if it gets hot look we're just scratching the hole there [Applause] once we're upright like that the hard bit's done basically it's just a matter of just and then i'll just wash that off and we'll put it over the top of that valve and then i can pretty much i think fill the heating system up again oh yeah please baby please go down [Music] this beast is definitely going to feature on tools of note at the end i'm sure so handy to have something like this that can instantly stencil you out almost a recreation a mold of what you're trying to cut round on the tile all you need to know is how to measure from the current tile that's there to where you need to start indenting your stencil [Music] and as you can see here when it all goes well it's possibly one of the most satisfying things in life all you high-flying bankers out there footballers snooker players i mean you know a 147 doesn't feel anywhere near as good as cutting out a tile so that fits perfectly round a little bit of door and architrave [Music] so we're almost there i just thought i'd tell you the ox wedge system that i'm using here has a t-piece that sits underneath the tile and when you put the wedge through the eye of that t-piece and then use the ratchet hand tool that you can adjust to different depths you can then tighten up and ensure that the tiles are level to each other this will make a massive difference not only because you want level tiles you don't want steps but also when it comes to grouting if there are any differences in height will stick out like a sore thumb so now i've got all my cuts done i've got all my rows and all my tile cuts marked out with my little row and badge system which is i think unique to how i do it and probably wrong but it works for me we can now pull up the tiles stack them nicely up out of the way hoover the whole area one more time and then get mixing our adhesive right so now we're at that glorious stage the adhesive stage now there's a couple of things i think that you should maybe be aware of when you're doing this sort of mixing is to make sure you've got enough so when you get to a stage like you're only going to know this after a while but when you've done a whole run is that half a bucket or is that a full bucket keep that in your head for future mixes also if you've got a mate with you or you've got a friend helping you out or you've got a wife who could help you out maybe sort of show them how to mix and then they can just you can start getting a rotation of buckets of new mix coming in and you can just whack the tiles down what you're going to need for this is a bucket trowel which is a square trowel i just use a small little paddle mixer i put that in my drill this here i've got my bosch hammer in here and then i've got something that drills and mixes with a hammer i mean you need to have hammer on if you're mixing adhesive i'm joking now next thing is the type of bucket i use i like to use a flexible gorilla tub even though this has got a bit of a split in it already sometimes i can get little splits in them um but what we do is we put about an inch of water in the bottom and then we mix it up into a lovely paste basically and i'm trying to think the sort of thickness standard travel lodge standard premiere in porridge right so a little bit of the bow in there probably going to get all over the lens of the camera but that's life and look just a little bit to get us started in there okay so it's not really full of stuff all right just start mixing it up nice and easy time to go mad all right a little bit more make sure as well once you actually do any tiling to put gloves on because this stuff is adorable [Applause] [Music] and look at that and if i lift it up i'll just sit up almost like nice cake mixture just keep mixing it make sure you give it a good old mix you mix it well now and make it easier in a few minutes time once you're getting it on the floor now we know for a fact because i've already got all my tiles marked out like we know exactly where we're going with these we've got our toilet adhesive here i'm going to use an eight millimeter bed on this trowel what we're going to do is we're going to lay down our mortar and lay down our tar adhesive in this area move it around get it all moved around then we're going to pull it just one way we're not going to leave swirls or anything like that because the mortar the tile adhesive won't be able to dry properly if you do that if you do it just one way like so the air will be able to escape out of each end and then when you push down normally that will make sure that we get a good bed the other thing we're going to do is we're going to back butter all the tiles we'll do that in a sec my first main tile i'm going to put in is going to be this first tile here this first full tile once we've got that in i know it's exactly in the right position so i can move on with getting my my other tiles in so using my bucket trout just scoot around the edges try and keep your bucket clean if you can and we just get a little bit of adhesive just like this we just plonk it on here okay there's no madness of that but so look what i'm gonna do because this first i know i've got my markings here already so i know exactly where this first hole goes i just need to make sure i can still see this line here and then i'll get this first one lay down like that pop just a small amount of adhesive on the back maybe a dollop more yeah i'd say back buttering the tiles is probably the most important thing you can do i don't usually do it laid down like this just did it so you can see it also got a couple of little caps at the end of the adhesive but we'll have a look at that in a minute so we've got a back butter tile here yeah okay i know there's a little bit of a gap in the adhesive there uh the advantage unit's going over here so it's not going to have any traffic and then i'm just going to pop one of these on that line there all of these on that one there you go to drop my tile literally into this section in position where you want it to be i'll just give it a little push a little rub and then a super important bit we're just going to lift this up we're just gonna check our coverage okay and just see so look we've got no gaps there's perfect coverage absolutely beautiful we don't we won't do that with every tile but we'll try to keep an eye on it throughout the job because of my method it's important that we get these first few tiles in now make sure we've got them laid down and also make sure our grout lines are nice and clean and then you can see us using this ox wedge system so we've just made sure that the tile's in the right position now and now i've set my clicker which you'll hear just now at a certain setting now i was like well that's not tight enough for me i'd like it to be a little bit tighter so i've just adjusted it a little bit and then i'll be able to click it and again this is the way that we'll do the tiling throughout the job and it ensures that the tiles will be level with each other through out all our tiles nice and level pull them all down so they're all on the same level for these first few sections i won't be pulling out a full adhesive bed which is what you're going to see most pro tilers do just because i just want to get all these little bits in correctly properly make sure that my beds are okay make sure that my eight mil depth is okay for these tiles as well give all the tiles good back buttering like i said i'm not a professional tyler i just do tiling in my own house or for my mates if any of them ask me to do their bathrooms which i hate happens usually happens down the pub drives me mental but once i get started i'll be pulling out a full adhesive bed which means then that we can ensure that all of the tiles have a full adhesive coverage underneath but we'll be checking that periodically anyway so now it's all hands it's all the old hose of deck brew [Music] i was almost finished and then this happened [Music] but it was easily fixed without any right there expletives so it's another day everything's now dried out what we're going to do now i'm just going to use my little ox tool that i've got here you get two blades on these it's one you'd use for sort of trying to drag out any any adhesive that might get in the way when you're grouting and the other one is kind of like more of a sort of abrasive kind of blade that i probably won't use on this because it's just a little bit wide to go into these gaps without actually scoring uh the actual face of the tile so i'm just going to use this now what we're going to do as well is we're just going to hit out each one of these now what we do if you don't want to use a hammer because you're worried about getting the hammer near the tile and maybe cracking the tile just get a lump of wood if you want and then you can lift the wood up and literally just hit them off like that okay the wedges i can just put back in here these little bits get thrown away they're consumable but the wedge goes back in there then i'll buy another bag of those spacers ready for when we do the very difficult patterning on the bloody wall which is not going to be fun if you haven't subscribed to the channel yet please do hit the subscribe button because i've got to do a 3d square effect tiling job as kind of a feature wall on the where the shower's going to be and where the bathtub comes out gonna be really difficult so make sure you hit the subscribe button for that and also if i get a thousand likes on this video i'm going to make a t-shirt that has a huge penis on it and then wear it in the next video so now it's a matter of whacking out saving my wedges and throwing away all the old clips then we use my little rake tool just to make sure we've got no adhesive bits sticking up or old bits of clip in our way for when we do our grouting so you know i waited a good day before we actually got on the tiles after we'd stuck them down to do this i know what the comments section is like on youtube videos and also once this stage is done wait another day or two before you do your grouting to make sure that your adhesive has fully gone off now we hoover and sponge off once twice three times the lady but literally without like joking you've got to make sure that your tiles are completely cleaned out of dust hoover out all the gaps make fully sure look at every line don't cut corners here because if there are any bits of grit or dust or little bits of adhesive still stuck on the side of the tile it's going to really really annoy you when you come to the next stage which is grouting right then gang it's another day and that's why i'm wearing a new t-shirt from the plumber parts store adjustable plus a hand equals a hammer bang we've got the tiles down everything's really clean we've made sure everything's really clean and now we're ready to grout so the most important thing about grouting getting it right the first time is to make sure you mix your grout in a very clean bucket buy a new bucket if you have to yeah uh don't you know honestly if you're going to do this once just make you do not want to be putting grout on and finding those little lumps of something or other in the ground really make sure it's mixed up well the consistency wants to be kind of yesterday's gravy that's kind of what i've been looking at so look first off a really really clean bucket just read the instructions number one we've left our tiles to set on the adhesive for pretty much two days i've not done it the day after make sure that the tiles can go off nicely make sure the adhesive underneath and golf nicely make sure you've left the window open if you're in the property it says here mix it across from approximately two parts powder to one part water so if you want just get your powder and pour it into that cup there you go you know exactly what you're getting one two we'll do four four cups we've got one and then we'll go just nearly two bubbling away there at the bottom now if we uh unfortunately i didn't clean my paddle off so it's got loads of crap on it so i'm gonna have to go manual i'm afraid but it's one of those things i'll just get on mixing make sure you get down into the bucket make sure you get all the bits and bobs up right now set a timer on my phone see you in 10 minutes guys right so 10 minutes later another little mix up in here oh yeah that's looking lovely look see that that's the sort of consistency you want lovely and all done like that because we measured it out using a cup how how can it be so using your spatula pop a little bit of grout on the first joint you're working on and then use your grout float to push that grout really hard into each joint now a lot of people would just do it once i have a little rule it's like the rule of three i guess where i push a bit of grout into a section and then i push it in two more times and when i'm in a section i mean a width of the short part of the end of the grout float so i'll push it in and i push it in two more times pushing him really hard to make sure that we push all the air out to make sure that we get right down into that adhesive to get under any mini gaps under the tile and to make sure there's no air gaps under there as well once i've done a full section and i've ruined my knees because i haven't got knee pads on silly me i'll lightly run over that with a damp sponge not a soaking wet sponge just a damp sponge to just clear off any impurities of the grout as it goes into the joint and also to clean off any extra grout residue off the top of the tile this bit i can only advise you on if i was you and you've never done this in your life why don't you tile a few bits of tile onto a piece of wood and practice grouting before you actually go into the room and do it proper now i'll leave it until the next day and we'll sponge off the tiles at least six or seven times using this little roller as well to clean the sponge off each time just making sure we get all the residue off the tiles before we move on to the final stage in this video so what we're going to do now is the last thing you should do and hopefully you kind of notice that when i've come in here and done any work in here i've worn socks i haven't come in here with shoes because you don't want to keep treading stuff in the floor now has been washed down a load of times um and i've already tested this in a little section around there just to make sure it's okay this is polar s1 tile and grout protector this will be in the shop in the section of what i use to do my tiling so you'll be able to find that there with any luck we open the window we turn the fan on and then we spray from about 20 centimeters away just give it a good even coating and then work our way back then we're going to leave it for half an hour if there's any excess residue when we put it on we're going to wipe it off straight away just using a standard j cloth and what that will do that will stop or prevent dirt getting into your grout i'm really happy with how this job went everything from preparing the floor with plywood to getting our membrane in to making sure that everything was glued down really well to having my weird way of cutting the tiles all first and then being able to lay them all down in one big go just means it's less stressful i know everything is going to be there where i want it and now when i walk on the floor in here it's absolutely solid it's just brilliant to think wow i've done a great job there so please come back next week when we'll continue with our bathroom renovation if you don't subscribe we do loads of shorts videos throughout the week and also a mid-weekly miniature video where we answer comments do plumbing disasters and chat about loads of other things as well but before we go let's have a look at this video's tools of note all of which you'll be able to buy in our amazon store to get us started this ox tile system is absolutely fantastic at getting our tiles nice and level a really snazzy way to light tiles and to add to that i really like the little hand tool and rake device useful for removing stubborn old tile spacer and also the pesky odd blob with adhesive on the edge of the tire before you growl oh and of course my fantastic tile blade cutter always spend good money on a blade cutter guys you'll never know when it will need a good hard shag simple but sexy the rollers on top of this bucket make rinsing out a sponge oh so easy and of course my tile mould former goes perfectly rounded incredibly small biceps thanks ever so much for watching this week's power parts of code uk video hit the subscribe button hit that like let's get to a thousand and i'll see you in the next video remember to hold [Music] this
