Three Minute Thought: What Is Governmentality?

[Music] government ality is a concept developed by michel foucault in his 1977-78 lecture series called security territory population in this lecture series Foucault was mainly interested in the fundamentals of power relations he wanted to examine the ways in which the state exercises control over its populace in brief one could say that government allottee refers to the art of government or the relations of power amongst the state and its people throughout his career Foucault distinguished three main forms of power sovereign power disciplinary power and government allottee sovereign power can be defined as the full right and power of a governing body over itself without any interference from outside sources or bodies such a power can be perfectly symbolized by a king whose right to power can never be challenged the populace simply has to abide by the laws and regulations of the centralized power disciplinary power on the other hand is characteristic of the modern period where power is exercised through disciplinary means in variety of institutions such as schools prisons militaries and others such a power is exercised by those who represent the authority that is to say people that are subjected to disciplinary institutions are forced to behave in ways the power wants them to in addition this is where fuko's concept of power and knowledge becomes most useful disciplinary institutions such as schools mental hospitals and prisons disseminate knowledge by extension this knowledge allows power systems to analyze observe and ultimately foster the psyche of the populace therefore the concept of power should be taken quite literally institutions that create and produced knowledge also wield great power finally the power of government ality refers to the way in which people are instructed to govern themselves most importantly government allottee shifts power from a center authority and distributes it among a population this achieved through non direct ways by conducting the conduct of the people in his 1977 lecture series Foucault was mostly interested in the way neoliberalism taught people to govern themselves in this case government ality instills a wish in people's mind to control their own actions for the benefit of the state for example if healthcare is treated as a commodity by the government sooner or later people will begin to perceive their access to health service as an award this way the person seeking healthcare will negotiate and possibly obstruct his own ability to access it that is the conduct that the state is indirectly responsible for to put it simply government allottee defines willing participation of the governed which is based on the active consent of the populace thank you so much for watching this video if you liked it please make sure to subscribe also let me know what you I review next
