today i'm going to show you how we stain two brand new concrete slabs we're gonna give you a whole list of things not to do so that you won't mess up the job and you should share this video with your builder i think it would help him tremendously don't you i think it would help him a lot [Music] [Music] [Music] this project is a basement floor on a new cabin in the mountains of western virginia and the first thing we're going to do today is just clean the floor like i said it's new concrete and they actually kept it pretty clean so we're just running our buffer across the floor with a sanding screen and that's getting a lot of the dirt off the surface and it's opening the pores of the concrete up so that our stain will penetrate we're going to scrape all the lines clean we're going to vacuum up all the dust and we're going to be ready to apply our acetone based dye it's pretty rare to get a project like this where we can stain the concrete without having to grind it first most of the time it seems like staining the concrete in the basement is an afterthought so we'll show up on a job kind of like this one and the floor will be covered in paint or clear sealer or whatever and we would have to grind the entire surface off of the concrete before we can stain it but if you can stain the concrete like this without grinding it i just think it looks better it's gonna have a lot more natural color variation and you can even see some of the texture of the way the concrete was trialled when they put it down [Music] [Music] now the floor is stained we're going to mix up our water-based epoxy and all we have to do is roll it on the floor and we're going to be done for the day this project turned out to be one of the nicest ones that we've done in a while and that's because the builder really took a lot of care and keeping the floor nice during the construction process there are a couple of big mistakes that people make when they're planning to stain and concrete floor number one you shouldn't cover the concrete for the first month after you pour it as the concrete is curing in that first month water is evaporating out of that slab and if you put anything on the concrete for an extended period of time it will slow the evaporation rate and that changes the color of the concrete so that means that in the first month after the concrete is poured you can't do something like like setting a four by eight sheet of plywood on the floor and leave it in one spot for a while because if you do there'll be a shadow in the shape of that plywood permanently cured into the concrete you also shouldn't cover the floor with plastic or paper either if you use paper where you overlap the paper on each row it'll actually cure a dark strip in the floor and then if you use plastic the wrinkles in the plastic will actually change the color of the concrete too so just need to avoid both of those things okay we're back on day two all we have to do today is mix up our urethane we're gonna roll that on the floor and we're gonna be done with this project the job usually looks good enough to be finished before we put the urethane on but we always like to have one more coat it just helps to even out the sheen and it also makes the floor a little more durable [Music] [Music] this project turned out really nice but i also want to show you another project where we use the same type of system without staining the concrete [Music] okay i just told you not to cover the concrete so i figure i should tell you a few things that you can do to make sure that your job comes out as good as possible number one it's important to keep the concrete clean for the first two or three weeks after it's been poured in virginia in particular we deal with a lot of red mud and if red bug gets in the concrete while it's relatively new then it can stain the concrete so just do your best to try to keep it clean for two or three weeks after it's been poured and then number two you just have to try to keep chemicals off the floor so whether that's plumber's glue or paint from the painters or a tile grout from the tall man any of those things need to be kept off of the concrete so whenever those trades are working it's important that they work on top of a drop cloth another thing you can do is tell your framers not to use red chalk red chalk line is permanent we can't get it up we can't sand it up so don't use red chalk tell them that you use blue or white and this one always surprises most people but drywall mud actually doesn't hurt the concrete it sands off pretty easily with our buffer so don't worry about covering the floor when they're hanging and finishing drywall this floor is a lot dirtier than the other project there's a lot of paint drips on the floor there's a few rings where they set paint cans down there's some glue on the floor there's all kinds of stuff so we're still gonna try to not grind the concrete though we're gonna use our buffer and just sand the surface of the concrete we take razor blades we scrape up as much glue and as much paint as we can sometimes you have to kind of take the good with the bad we'd rather not grind the cream off the top because it takes away from the look so we're just going to get it as clean as we can and then we're going to seal it people request gray stain concrete all the time but i personally think just sealing natural gray concrete looks a lot better than trying to stain it gray so we did a few samples for this homeowner and he agreed with me so we're just going to seal this one today without applying any color [Music] the water-based epoxy that we use it always makes the floor a milky white color so we really don't know how the floor is going to look until the sealer clears out so we always look forward to coming back the next day so we can finally see what the project's going to look like [Music] hey my name is tim with decorative concrete virginia i make a lot of videos like this one so if you want to see more like it hit the subscribe button down below okay this is the next day we're gonna put urethane down and we'll be finished with this one we've been using the same stain and sealed concrete system for about 15 years now and i've actually been working on courses that will teach you how to do the same systems you see in all of my videos so if you want more information about that it'll be the first link in the description down below i was really happy with how this project turned out i mean considering how much dirt and paint and things were on the floor i think it turned out really well but i would love to hear what you think did you like the gray sealed concrete better or did you like the brown stained concrete better leave a comment down below let me know this is that project i mentioned earlier in the video you can see those dark lines down the middle of the floor and that's where they cover the concrete with paper right after it was poured i'm not sure who's stained this concrete but the homeowners didn't realize those lines were going to be there until after they had it stained so we're going to go back in and we're going to grind off all the concrete stain and then we're going to do a trout concrete overlay across the entire basement and then we'll move forward with the same concrete system i showed you earlier in this video so if you want to see a walkthrough about that project i'll leave a link right here thank you for watching i'll see you next time
