hello and welcome aboard today we can't say that oh man i'm not allowed to be cheesy today [Music] so today is your lucky day today is today today we're going to take you on board our 1974 westerly cirrus 22 foot monohull and we're gonna do a walk through it's not gonna take a whole lot of time but we're gonna show you every nook and cranny of this amazing amazing i think it would be classified as a pocket cruiser but it's very very very capable pocket cruiser i would say i'd say you could go pretty long time be out cruising around for probably a month so before we go inside let's talk about just the overall value of this boat it's worth about four to six thousand dollars that makes it a very affordable boat for a lot of people at 22 feet you might think that's too small but it actually has a lot inside really if you take it down the basics you need a place to poop you need a place to eat prepare food and stay warm so shelter and and that's about it it's all in your head you can do it i'm ben that's ashley together we did the unimaginable we sold everything and then set off on a mission to sail around the world civilization see you later the freezer 35 countries later in over 30 000 nautical miles we temporarily left the boat halfway around the world to have a baby in canada but got stuck due to covet look [Music] i have no idea what's going to happen subscribe to follow us as we figure out a way to financially stay afloat until we can get back to our boat to finish this lap hey i need the keys i gave them to you no you took them back we're gonna start inside let's go check her out i'm not sure how wide it is it might be about eight feet it might be six and a half i'm not sure i'll google that later so welcome aboard our tiny summer boat it packs a punch there is so much space below it's incredible there is probably um five foot ten standing headroom i'm five i'm five seven so you know maybe an inch or two above me in the galley it's actually pretty well set up there is a cooking stove this is normally an alcohol stove but we had trouble locating alcohol and we found these this propane stove i think it's my brother's i we borrowed it we we borrowed it from him we'll give it back at the end of our cruising season and it fit perfectly so we just put this propane stove up here so you can boil and do whatever you need to do just using one pound propane bottles because those are legal if you don't have a solenoid because i guess the theory is you can't blow yourself up with one pound of propane so the tiny bottles actually fit very nicely in this compartment along with all our utensils it also holds the tin foil and the cutting boards underneath the utensil cupboard we have the pot cupboard and it slides out and there's a whoopsie daisy and there is a ton of room in this pot cupboard here let me show you haha those kind of pods on the left hand side of uh the pot cupboard we have the foot pump which is for the fresh water tank this boat is crazy cool it has two faucets and one of them is fresh and you just pump it like this and fresh water comes out and the other one is salt because the water tank even though i think it's massive for this size of boat and all we do the only thing it services is this tiny little faucet so it's just for washing your hands which we do a lot because of coven but you may want to conserve water if you're going away for a bit and you could use the salt water to do your dishes which is kind of amazing don't judge me we sometimes use paper plates moving on up you see i have willa's bottle rack fits perfectly and then we have a storage cupboard for stuff i have a couple hooks for hanging up tea towels and things it functions it totally works it's shocking this little propane heater is powered by a five pound bottle which sits up top you simply open this door you light it and this thing heats up this little boat in no time you can just put it on low because you don't need a lot of heat we turn this on at six a.m in the morning just as willis waking up and then we turn it on also at probably about five o'clock at night six o'clock at night depending on what the temperature is what the dew point is and just warm up the boat before we go to sleep on the starboard side of the vessel we have our main lounging area both of us can sit here we can sit here and play cards when it's freezing cold at night or raining outside it's actually really really good this also converts into a bed but underneath my butt is also a very important part of this kitchen this here is the ice box you do need ice on this boat the good thing is if you don't let your eyes melt too much you get cubes for your drinks you don't have to make them willa gets her own seat and has her own space here there's even enough room for willow on this boat and then underneath this side i have dry good storage it's kind of a mess in there whoa must have gone sailing and all tipped over the obligatory pasta coffee filters and marshmallows in case we have a marshmallow roast on the beach i'm gonna pass it off to ben and he's gonna do the aft of the boat because there's still so much to show on this boat you know what it feels like you know when harry potter they had they pop out their tents and and harry first season he's like oh my gosh how are like 20 of us gonna live in this tiny little tent boat is like harry potter's magic tent it keeps going and going so just watch okay we currently have one child and i believe it will stay that way because there's no room to procreate it's not the right word procreate are you allowed to put that in the film i can put whatever i want i'm the captain we got a cool little table here i forgot about that that's part of the galley so this cool little table right here has a little wooden switch that flips up you can put your dish drying stuff on there whatever like it almost doubles the size of the galley check that out it's awesome right here where my head usually is uh during the daytime this is kind of willa's play area or our daughter who is five months old also back here uh we have the uh fuse panel we have deck lights anchor lights running lights steaming lights navigation instruments ham radio yup this boat has a hammer radio cabin lights 12 volt plugs and heater but the heater doesn't have a plug because it's propane oh camera just wondering where that was um so at my feet i have a shelf because you obviously don't need this full height for your feet but yeah that shelf holds my beer on one side and then my drone on the other side think the previous owner that built this shelf you must have either been like a foot or two shorter than me or had i guess size nine feet because my feet basically do not go vertical so they have to stay sideways which is fine after sixth beer you're not going to be carrying that much we have a little hammock here which we can put food into or any other other gear the one thing you might have noticed up front is we had a huge fire extinguisher up there and we have another one back here this boat is so small that if a fire would break out you're going to be engulfed basically instantly so you need to have your safety equipment we also have a carbon monoxide alarm installed to take care of that um before i get out you'll notice that there's a ham radio over here we have a chart plotter we have a vhf a depth sounder and a crazy ass bearing compass from 1960 i want to say the one thing i've learned is i have to go feet in first and then do a push-up to crawl in there's not enough right here otherwise we've had so many laughs on this boat it's kind of hilarious actually now on on any boat well especially on boats that don't cost a lot um the engine is probably worth the most right here what we have is a 15 horse beta engine what they are is a marine eyes kubota and these things truck like crazy like they're super simple back here you have a little plunger for draining your oil which is built in really nice you got your primary fuel filter your secondary fuel filter and that's about it okay almost done almost done stay with us here one more small little thing we have a diesel tank and on the left-hand side we just have a lot more storage there's also more storage in here so let's go straight up to the bow and i'll start up there the other super cool thing on this particular westerly which i think is a pretty custom thing is that this bed slides out i know i've shown you this before but i still think it's really amazing nice and sturdy space this makes this birth like almost like a normal sized twin bed and you gotta kind of you feel like you you can roll around in it i can even pull willa into bed with me and that's amazing so this is the v-berth area of the westerly cirrus 22. i couldn't ask for much more i do fit here lengthwise my feet do kind of crawl into this side you can't complain it's a pretty cozy birth and it has now been modified even further to accommodate our half half-pint-sized daughter in her little crib that we've created for her and we've just done that but by taking rope and crib lining material that i bought i got free when i bought a used crib and attaching it to the ceiling where the screws already existed so we didn't have to drill any holes or anything it's just used existing screws and tied it up so it's good and strong she's not going anywhere in there and luckily she doesn't move too much yet that's a good thing this boat could be interesting if she was really on the move but let's talk about storage v-berths always have storage underneath them this one's kind of unique under here oh socks that's handy we have two kind of amazing storage areas on the port side here this is the port side of the boat this is where we keep all of our clothes and underneath it has sliding compartments and i can put shoes and games and everything else down here and that's that we don't have to go very far i'll just turn around all right let me contort myself in here we don't drink from the water tank in this boat it's we're not sure of the vintage or the the quality of the water we did put a bit of bleach in it to kind of clear it out we always carry a jug of water for drink fits perfectly up here and then we just buy one of these little pumpy doodads so that just goes on top of this water jug when we start using it and we're off to the races that's our water for our drinking so as you notice we're still in the forward cabin and if i ever want to slam a door on this boat because i feel like if you don't have a door to slam on a boat against your partner your boat isn't big enough watch this you got to get in there first all right here goes [Music] jesus well you have to slam it you gotta like you gotta mean it i mean when you're living on a 22-foot boat there's gonna be some things that you don't agree about but this is really cool the westerly cirrus on the starboard side has a head enclosure but this head is very very very tiny and so what they do is they actually take the door closes the head off and turn it to create a door to close off the whole forward birth oh i'm in okay fastening the camera this is way harder filming a walkthrough when there's no room so there's still pretty good headroom in this ford compartment and that's a really good thing because in this head there is a composting toilet and you need the headroom to get on the dang thing so this is our composting toilet and this is pretty much it for the head i mean it pretty much takes up the whole thing it's also got this wicked pivoting feature that ben built in you just grab on to the poo flap you pull it out and it kind of pivots so you're kind of like you get more room and then you get your head in because otherwise the toilet seat lid doesn't actually flip up so you gotta pivot it out then the toilet seat lid flips up and you can sit on the throne [Music] works great all jokes aside has proven to be amazing to have on this boat because you'd i mean otherwise you're looking to empty a porta porta-potty into something every couple days or i don't know if you pee a lot every day i'm not sure they don't hold a lot that's the bathroom and to get out of the bathroom you have to sit down on my bed and close the bathroom door this thing also comes with a tiller which you know some say a steering wheel is better but the problem with the steering wheel it's always in the middle and takes up a lot of room so with a tiller you can flip it down when you're using it and just kind of let it sit there and then when you're at anchor you can put it up and just leave it there and it's out of the way a couple other cool features here is there's winches so we use these to pull in the lines for the sails but they have built-in winch handles i don't know why the the pro is that uh you're never gonna lose the winch handle the con is that this wind channel is kind of always in the way i don't know must have come with the boat the other cool thing this boat has is a huge reel of line and we use this on the coast of canada here in deep anchorages where say this is the shoreline and it's really really deep you come in you back the boat in you drop your hook and then once you come close to shore then you take this line and you tie off to shore around a tree so a couple more things out here we got two cockpit cushions they're vinyl they don't soak up the rain kind of nice and then underneath these we have three compartments back here they are super deep you can throw so much stuff in here i don't think that actually does it justice so hold on one second here just to demonstrate i'm six foot four and i can basically ah i might be able to get in but i might not be able to get back out let's check this out that's incredible wow i can actually fit in here you could smuggle a small human we're a very large man well for a short period of time so there's another compartment under here and another one under here and that's where we keep all our ropes uh fishing gear downriggers in there and umbrellas chairs for going ashore just tons of other stuff extra water containers extra gas containers that kind of stuff so our main sale right here we just got new from precision sales it's pretty cool it's a gorgeous sale but what you'll notice it's been rolled on the boom and that's because this boom is a rolling has a roller in it so you put this handle in and then you can like turn it to to roll it up on the outside of the boot pretty neat little feature makes it really easy to store the cell on the front then going further forward this box right here contains the propane tank for the propane heater down below and then at the very front we have a roller genoa so a roller furling that holds our genoa again beautiful way to store these sails instead of having to take them all down fold them up find a place to put them it's much better just to roll them in situ and finally the last but not least is our anchor we have a ton of chain on this boat that goes down below in front of the front cabin this wicked windlass right here as far as i know is manual personally i just pull up the anchor by hand it's quite easy to do it's not very heavy and then last but not least we have um you'll notice a baby stay this is to hank on a storm jib if you have a road in a storm i don't know if you'd want to be on this boat and this boat comes with what's known as a tabernacle very cool word but basically what this means is there's a pivot point right through here that allows the mass to fold down when you're done for the season you don't have to have a crane to basically take the mast off this boat is also trailable so you can put it on trailer take it home with a mask fold it down and store it for the season without having to pay mortgage the only thing is you might miss you know that little snoogle with your partner at night if you like to do that kind of thing because you're definitely sleeping in separate beds on this boat there's no room for for that double bunking thing there's no generator there's no solar panels so that's the other thing that you might want to add to a boat like this is a bit of solar or something to help you charge those batteries all they run is the lights inside really and uh to charge up your your instruments and your gps and stuff so thank you for joining us on our tour of our tiny floating home we've had some absolutely epic times on this boat already so it's all you really need to get out there it's a fantastic boat to get on the water you've got everything you could possibly need we've had so many laughs on this boat it's been incredible partly because it's smaller than a regular sized boat and i think it's actually added to our experience it's made it more unique more fun more memorable but the fact of the matter is we're getting into these anchorages we're getting to islands we're going out and exploring and we're having a blast we've done so much hiking and gun cooling i guess they call it where you go into these little bays and we can't wait to take you along to see some more and maybe maybe you could get into one of these something to consider it's a great way to learn to how to anchor it's great way to learn how to sail the costs of maintenance the cost of repairs are going to be significantly less than a big boat so we hope you enjoyed our tour and uh stay tuned because we're about to set off adventuring again on this little wii thing stay tuned next week another episode bye for now see ya
