today i'm opening up the greatest pokemon mystery box ever made or at least that's what ray sipoletti and dylan laflaver told me two champion competitive pokemon tcg players who went into their vaults their personal vaults to put this box together just for us yes that's right this is very heavy by the way actually 12 pounds just about whether you're a collector or you play the game i think you're gonna enjoy this one we've never opened a box like this before and these guys they don't sell mystery boxes they made this just for us and here's what's incredible a lot of the rarest and most prized and some of the most expensive pokemon cards don't come from sets that you and i normally have access to but they come from competition playing like trophy cards and promotional cards so i'm excited to see some stuff i've never seen before rey and dylan have combined to win more tournaments than i could even count including a world championship they're also two awesome friends and fans of the channel who wanted to do something fun together but also something that could educate everyone about the game so here we've got four sealed envelopes we'll get to those in just a sec let's check out some of the loose stuff that was in this box first we've got a set of sleeves from 2015 pretend or poncho magikarp for gyarados as they're known these come from a special box that celebrated the opening of a pokemon center in japan and i i actually collect poncho pikachu cards it's nice to have the sleeves to go with it which is kind of cool next we've got this really cute pikachu celebrations children's day pikachu plush every month there would be a different pikachu plush toy available hence the name monthly pikachu we've got this sweet pokemon heart gold soul silver collection binder and inside we have okay really cool looking sealed notebook with pikachu and okay this is from the 2012 pokemon world championships that's a cool piece of history right here and in here we have a play mat featuring scrafty okay let's put this and the rest of the binder away and let's take a look at this epic looking backpack here this is a pokemon world championships bag from 2015 pikachu dressed as looks like george washington or something that's neat and this backpack is heavy too there's there's a bunch of stuff right here anyway that's it for the loose stuff let's dive into these envelopes all right i think we have uh we have some descriptions here that'll guide this journey for us that we're on and we've got some cards and top loaders and this giant card here okay let's let's read the description first hello there welcome to the world of pokemon since its inception the pokemon tcg has been accompanied by a full-fledged over-the-board competitive scene complete with champions trophies special cards and cash prizes the rich history of pokemon organized play spans nearly 20 years promo card giveaways are a mainstay of real-life pokemon events they provide a look back in time at the history of competitive pokemon now officially known as the play pokemon program players received some of the promos just for showing up but others were only earned by the best of the best other promotional cards were given to the event staff members and volunteers either way every single item in this box has a unique history behind its release so cool today we're a brand new player getting ready on our pokemon journey pick a starter and go forth this is cool let's see what we got we've got oh a pikachu promo you can see the pokemon league logo on the bottom of the artwork i love that and okay okay an unlimited charizard hollow in the first envelope what then there's the venusaur and yep as expected a blastoise behind it these are obviously the evolved forms of our starters here i like this start of the box here are the starters and then this jumbo card a promo of course can't play with this thing hey we have the classic pikachu really cool start to this box i mean i have literally no idea what's coming next so speaking of starters while i put this away and get to the next envelope a quick note on dylan and rey dylan started playing competitive pokemon in 2004 because he saw an ad for a pokemon league in a magazine and then he became world champion in 2008 world champion that's crazy okay let's open envelope number two what's inside envelope number two some cards some packs i think i recognize these packs we'll see early league the first stop on most players journey is a local pokemon league these events are simple low stakes gatherings of pokemon tcg players during a pokemon league session players battle and trade for fun players earn rewards based on consistent attendance and playing games win or lose all players would always walk away with handfuls of unique promo cards in the early days of events in the early 2000s league rewards mostly took the form of pokemon organized play or pop series booster packs each containing two cards some of these cards were powerful and exclusive while others had unique art two of the most well-known are umbreon gold star and espeon gold star those are definitely popular cards alright let's see with these packs we've got uh pop series two pack a couple of them actually in a pop series four with deoxys on it and for the cards okay we have a hitmonchan wow look at this hollow swirl right where it says special punch and yo there's a winner stamp on here that's kind of cool this was actually handed out during pokemon league battle zones in february of 2003. that's really cool next we have a watsi era eevee holo black star promo this was available through the pokemon league in june of 2000. that is a gorgeous gorgeous card right there we have computer error this apparently was handed out through the league in may of 2000 then we have a pikachu this is from as you can tell in the bottom right hand corner it's part of the pop series two promo cards and then yo okay a celebi ex number 17 of 17 from the same set pop 2 series that's sick celebrity is definitely a favorite of mine now while i put these away and head toward envelope number three let me tell you about rey sepaletti rey told me that he started playing pokemon because he was born with a heart condition that literally meant he couldn't do anything really physical and because he was super competitive as a person he started to play pokemon and he said it helped him through all the tough times and multiple heart surgeries that he needed to have in fact rey and dylan sent me this box right before another one of rey's surgeries and check out this message that ray sent me on instagram thanks for giving us the opportunity to work on that project it was a lot of fun to put together and gave me something to look forward to heading into the heart stuff i really appreciate it it's going to be hyped to watch and i'm confident it will be the best mystery box anyone has done for pokemon hopefully so you watching you can see if that's actually true here at the end but ray you're the man i'm honored all right envelope number three let's tear it open let's see what we get inside later league around the late 2000s pop pack ceased in favor of distributing reprinted cards with the new crosshatch hollow foil for a while the pokemon company focused on reprinting some of the game's best and most popular cards as league promos these became not only a spot to gather and play but also a place to acquire new cards to improve your deck arguably one of the coolest league releases was the exclusive gym badge cycle which used the wizards of the coast style card frame players could get these by playing games at pokemon league each month for a limited time league organizers received bricks of promo cards from tpci for distribution to league attendees some of the leftover stacks were never opened and remain sealed to this day each card in these packs is the same as the card on top more promos than you would know what to do it okay let's take a peek inside and wow okay definitely looks like they had way more than they know what to do with because there's so much stuff in here wow we have a bunch of leaf energy packs oh with snorlax too hey what's up g some more promos with the pokemon league stamp we got del fox lake cien fennekin okay we got more packs in free and regirock yep a couple more things azelf and torterra okay there's so much here right now i want to look at this first stack that we picked up uh we've got a clay doll a spirit tomb oh i like this trainer card this is what was uh spoken about the pokemon communication card with pikachu jumping right out of the screen again i love that logo on the card we've got broken time space and and here we go okay the watsi style the watsi frame gym badge promos this is uh giovanni with the earth badge we got blaine with the volcano badge brock with the boulder badge sabrina with the uh with the marsh badge and then we got koga the soul badge i'm getting uh massive infinity gauntlet vibes right now erica and her rainbow badge misty cascade badge and lieutenant serge and the thunder badge i think that's the last one fiery torch pokemon catcher bianca another trainer no badge though for you bianca i'm sorry floret primarina cineror decidueye tepig snivy oshawott and then the dell fox which we saw earlier braxion and beniken and there's that snorlax with a lot of apples now we have this stack of leaf energies and there's enough of them that i don't think i'd feel bad if we opened up you know one of these i just want to see what's inside maybe maybe they're all energies i'm not sure but let's open this one up all right fire energy water energy sweet okay so we just have all the other energies in here with that really cool cross hatch hollow pattern all right let's put this all aside and let's open envelope number four uh inside we have another card and a nice thick stack of cards right oh man hey i wonder what this is all about after getting a taste for playing with others at league most players next stop is the pre-release tournament pre-release events give players an opportunity to play with cards from new expansions prior to their official release date pre-releases are usually held in local card stores players usually would receive six booster packs to open and build a deck to compete using the cards they opened alongside the packs players always receive a promo card with a stamp special art or both depending on the release do pre-releases satisfy your taste for competition no open the bag and start competing for an invite to pokemon tcg world championships okay we'll open the bag after this envelope here but wow okay so pre-release cards uh yup definitely haven't seen this one before black and white plasma storm pre-release crovat this is a bronzong from x y phantom forces uh one of my all-time favorite sets in fact then we have a dragon dragon straggle which i can't pronounce that properly from x y flash fire ulteria again these are pre-releases uh this one's from dragons exalted then we have okay now we're going back now this is a watsi era pre-release card uh this is misty's sidra sweet looking dark gyrados for the team rocket pre-release this was uh given away in april 2000 whoa kingdra from primal clash that's a cool looking card almost looks like a is that a full art that's awesome that looks really cool blastoise nice from the unleashed pre-release i really really dig this blastoise artwork i mean look at that i mean she's just it's got this like karate stance thing going on that's super cool then we have an altaria from roaring skies and oh this is a staff card that's really cool so this was given away to uh organizers of events and i actually have a small collection of staff cards and i don't have this one but this is awesome to see okay right there i was wondering if this card was gonna be in a stack this is the infamous charizard from evolutions but the promo version of it you can see the 2016 xy evolutions stamp right there on it this is the same base artwork from arita this is gorgeous this is really cool to have in the collection and finally a snorlax okay from call of legends hall of legends set is ridiculous i just picked up the booster box for it actually and i didn't even know this promo card or pre-release card existed that's great wow this entire envelope was was far i mean the whole box so far and we still got more to go let's read this here do pre-releases satisfy your taste for competition no open the bag and start competing for an invite so the pokemon tcg world championships yes it is time to open the bag all right we have the world championships bag this is from 2015. a gorgeous bag i can't believe i have this in my hands but we'll see what's inside this is quite heavy in fact this is probably the bulk of the weight [Music] no way oh my gosh what is all this there are more envelopes and they have pins on them 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 and a binder wow look at the artwork on this vancouver canada august 9th this is uh world championships and i'm guessing this is going to be the last thing to open but i mean look at this artwork back here and i do see that there is uh some cards in there anyway let's save that until later it looks like based on what i see here city state regional national this is very well thought out let's go to number five league competition to earn an invite to the world championships players need to earn a certain number of championship points by placing highly at premier events throughout a year-long season of play league challenges have been the primary way players have earned championship points league cups are larger events a step up from league challenges and only held by select tournament organizers league challenges introduce competitors and collectors to the most accessible tier of trophy cards in pokemon simple crosshatch hollow promo card stamped with first through fourth awarded to the top four players of each event these cards were only distributed to the winners and those featuring popular pokemon are often quite coveted alright so we are in real competition now it seems let's see what we got here oh yes this is the corocoro mew promo designer artwork otherwise known as a lily pad mew but look at that it has a first place gold stamp there that's sick and they award these only to first through fourth i think they all get the same artwork this is from the evolutions season league challenge behind this we have second place dela bird this league challenge was from early 2014 volca rona we got the leaf and fire energy sort of split car that looks really cool this one is a third place from 2016. and yes there he is scyther another one of my favorite pokemon and this one is from the dark explorer set in the league challenges from 2013. behind that a okay first place malabar reverse holo this is from forbidden light there's some other cards packed in here we're definitely not going to open this my favorite out of the envelope here is definitely the view so this was league competition let's put these to the side i'm literally running out of room here envelope number six incoming see what we got inside battle roads introduced back in 2007 these were the first english tournaments under the tpci other than the world championships to award trophy cards so work can't be a trophy card uh anyway victory cups and victory medals were given to the battle road winners and feature unique artwork not found on any set cards battle road tournaments were eventually replaced by league challenges and league cups as the most basic level of competition okay so we're in an actual english tournament now real competition let's see what this is trophy card let's flip this one first and a victory metal trainer card i see the battle roads logo on the bottom right pikachu holding up that silver medal now after a bit of research i found out that this doesn't mean it was for second place uh silver medal was handed out in autumn and gold was handed out to winners in the spring this one in particular was from the 2009 to 2010 season and now the psa card i didn't even know we were getting some credit cards in here we have 2011 psa first place autumn victory cup we got victini chillin inside the trophy these were again the victory cups as opposed to what we just saw as the victory middle and the other fun fact about these other than the top ranking cards awarded at the world championships which are only printed in english victory cup was the first trophy card to be released in english before japanese wow okay so we are heating up i hope you're enjoying this box hit that like button if you are ray and david obviously put a ton of work into this and that's why i'm not mentioning the value of all this stuff i mean you can figure it out on your own but this is their story this is the story of tcg and i want to respect that to me this has been amazing so far we got more so let's get to envelope number seven this is the first one with a pin on it which says city championships 2008 2009. okay so we're at the city level so let's see what's inside oh there's more than just cards in here it looks like before local competitive play became oriented around pokemon league players competed to become the best in their area at city championships these tournaments ran for the majority of competitive pokemon's history at different times they awarded stamped promo cards championship points special pins like the one on this envelope medals and even trophies here's that pin again i like that a lot you can guess what the next pins are going to be as we sort of move from city to the next ones okay so let's look at the cards we have a parallel city with the pokemon championship stamp on it says right under there that's really cool we have a torchic with the same stamp and that cross hatch pattern again actually really like that pattern we've got a few eevees here that'll be awesome definitely gonna give one of these to my daughter she's just a huge fan of evie and back here we have wow okay a few copies of a sick looking all blue glacion card hatching and the logo with the symbol in the middle of the card this is absolutely incredible and i i can't believe they included this because they don't just give these that this is a trophy a 2013 pokemon championships city trophy i was not expecting this ray david thank you for sharing this with us and this is so much fun okay next we got envelope eight and this one seems heavier than the last one i mean let's look at the pin it says state province territory championships same year 2008-2009 so let's open this up and see what's inside state championships were held in most states in the u.s territories and canadian provinces the prizes for these events were similar to those of city championships this level of competition has since been combined with regional championships okay so we have inside some cards another envelope and what is th this is another trophy and a bigger one this this is geez 2013 semifinalist this is absolutely gorgeous let me stick this uh behind here let's take a look at the cards we got a combustion and same deal with the logo the crosshatch pattern but this time the stamp is at state level we have a luxio this time with uh it's actually a different looking stamp dragonair that's a sweet looking artwork right there wow those look like cherry blossoms reverse valley instead of what was the last parallel city there's another cool stadium card here with the promo stamp and yes another eeveelution but this time leafeon with the green color but the blue border still that looks so cool i've never seen anything like that before and we have three of them but we're not done yet because we have this envelope an envelope within an envelope it's a bit heavy so let's tear it open and see what's inside we have a no way dude are you kidding we have two trophies and now a medal like a literal pokemon championship medal i mean i don't even have any word this is so heavy by the way and it means it's solid of course we got nintendo engraved on the back this is really cool looking ribbon it looks like this was from 2010 to 2011 fourth place this is so awesome i can't believe you guys sent this over i'm i'm really excited about this i know it's not a pokemon card but i mean can you just see how much more to the pokemon sort of story there is than just the cards i mean this was the competition play and i mean the experiences that were had the trips with families can imagine staying at like a hotel to get ready for your next battle and things like that this is this is just so cool i am learning so much okay sorry let's head on to regionals regional championships are now the mid-level of competition for the seasoned pokemon player previously regional championships around north america were held on the same day one time per year but after phasing out city and state level events the play pokemon program was restructured with a focus on regional competition players chasing a worlds invite can now travel to multiple regional events on different days throughout the year to earn points towards qualification of course tcg events aren't only attended by players event staffs are responsible for making tournaments tick for their efforts staff were compensated with unique sealed products and cards known as staff promos stat promos are often the rarest variation of an event promo usually stamped with the word staff so we already saw one staff card the altair but okay i like staff cards maybe there'll be more in here we'll see misty's determination ah looks actually much different than the misty's determination i'm used to in hidden fates behind misty we have a dublade regional championships very nice card then we have a couple aegis slashes and an electrifier and a psa card psa card once again this is incredible i had no idea what this could be it's a oh dude this it's an umbreon staff card from region what an umbreon staff card from regionals that is fire okay so from 2012 psa 9 black and white promo card but staff and umbreon that is so sick okay i'm just going to put you here because i love you no for real this is uh this is a hot card okay envelope number nine for the win i mean how is it going to get any better yes of course it can get better because we're going to nationals baby national and international championships for much of pokemon's history the largest events accessible to most players were national championships held in all countries where competitive pokemon was officially supported as of 2017 national championships have been retired and replaced with international championships four of these events are held each year in north america europe latin america and oceana placing highly at a national or international championship is considered a tremendous accomplishment for most players in the game so inside this envelope we have wow okay a lot of things let's see first up we have another play mat let's see what this is about oh yeah that's dope that's dope pokemon championships north america columbus ohio july 2018 next we have from the same year a pin nice uh 2018 pokemon championships north america competitor pin and this is a tapu coco very cool vibrant colors it looks really cool we also got some pokemon deck sleeves definitely have never seen these ones before but that's an awesome sort of collector's item and of course some cards so let's see what we got so we have a shellos from origins game fair which happened in june of 2008 with the event logo on right there ah tropius so there's that national championship stamp the familiar looking one that we've seen before blaziken that card looks awesome we got the red orange crosshatch and then the artwork literal fire this card is that's that's really cool and then oh yeah the espeon that's that's gorgeous then we have a wild band this is this is different this is from pokemon championships in europe ah okay the cards at national um and this is uh when it went to international i think uh there's the europe stamp and that's cool looking card and there's ditto as charmander again from origins international game expo in 2007. uh all right that was a sweet set of cards and that espeon was amazing we got some international stuff in there too definitely have uh have not seen those before and now as i push those cards aside we're into the last envelope here and then we still have that vancouver world championship binder with some stuff in it i can't wait to see no pin on this one though okay couple japanese cards it looks like from the print on the back pokemon in japan is one of the few areas in the world that is not regulated by tpci instead organized play in japan is regulated by an entirely separate entity and japanese players earn invites to the world championships through their own system well that's really interesting the prizes and promo cards awarded at japanese events are unique as the events themselves that's really cool i had no idea that was a thing so let's see what the card in the top loader is first oh yeah that's dope that is that is dog gyarados hollow in japanese but he's red this is heart gold soul silver promo card and this was uh associated with the game legend era of cards in japan hence l p in the card number that is a really really dope looking card then we have another card and yes i'm familiar with this one this is the grand prix charizard promo very popular and populated card uh so many of these have been graded actually and it was designed by like a fan it was like an art contest in japan which is pretty cool so yes it looks like another graded car this time a cgc graded card instead of psa and it is oh that's cool that's cool jirachi with the championship series 2019 stamp on it drocci a very popular pokemon and i've seen this artwork before from the japanese team-up set which is a great premium set from japan in 2019 but this one has that special stamp on it which makes it even more special i love that and that takes us to again if we're trying to get that invite to worlds that's based on age so there's different divisions based on geographical region and collecting enough points to earn an invitation we're headed to the pokemon world championships so as i make room for us to explore this final stage i look at all the amazing stuff here right that ray and david sent over and it makes me realize just how long the journey would have been for a player to just start playing pokemon to go to something like world championships dylan in just four short years after starting competitive play became the world champion at senior level in 2008. he also won regionals as a master of the highest division in 2011 placed 4th in u.s nationals and won regionals again in 2013. he went on later in life to focus on college and now runs the collegiate hearthstone esports program and for rey who in fact nowadays works for an esports team that he joined in the world of hearthstone although he has never won worlds outright he's been invited five times which is so impressive rey is the one who reached out to me to coordinate this box which has just been an incredible experience so we're about to open the finale here but in every interaction with him he's been so positive and i can tell that through all the tough times he's had pokemon has turned him and dylan into two amazing humble generous people who just wanted this opportunity to number one say hi to all of you and number two share and spread more about the crossover between the tcg side of things and as collectors and and because in this community of pokemon right as a whole we should all be working together and like ray through all the tough times we need to stay positive and not bring each other down but rather lift each other up at least that's how i read it thank you for this box ray and thank you david and now let's open up this world championship binder all right looks like we're going to worlds vancouver canada 2013. see what's inside dude i've seen these before we're gonna read that in just a minute let's open this up wow look at that this is matching the backpack we had this is crazy let's read this first card before we flip things over pokemon world championship this is the top of the top it is typically held in august and features the tcg and more recently the main series pokemon video games pokemon go and more the pokemon world championships under tpci was first held in 2004 for years worlds has always been held in a warm weather location in the united states starting in 2013 with a tournament in vancouver canada every year a set of these promo cards are given to competitors in a special world championship binder with each copy of the promo showcasing a different language spoken at the tournament staff members working at the tournament received a staff stamped english version ever since 2013 the champions festival promo artwork has played off the theme of the host city for example the 2015 champions festival promo features ducklit and swanna paying homage to the host city of boston its public gardens and famous duck tours rapidash alludes to the paul revere's midnight ride the strong identity of these cards and how they tie into real world locations make them one of the most unique releases in the history of the pokemon tcg after worlds tpci picks four top performing decks used by world championship players and creates non-tournament legal copies of them to be sold in stores these commemorative decks are a great way for a player to experience high tier decks without big spending all right we're going to flip over the page and see what's here dude this is so sick here's our uh world or a world championship pin it says hawaii and i love this pin this is the 2008 world championships deck uh this is uh paul atonosov so okay paul in my research was uh world champion that year i think of the masters division uh and this was his deck but i looked online check this out this is dylan lefaber's empatec deck featuring empoli on there that is so cool like to have your own deck be sold with your as you can see on the card itself that is dope dylan congratulations on the win again so let's see what other goodies we have in here we have another psa card oh that's cool uh 2015 champions festival promo staff card staff card again wow that's uh the rapidash on there that they talked about with pikachu on top so that's like paul revere you know the redcoats are coming the redcoats are coming and then there's swan in the background and some ducklits in there that relates to the boston duck tours they're in the boston harbor in the background and look at that statue that's arceus up there so cool world championship 2015 stamp in gold that is wonderful so let's pop that back there next to umbreon great collection forming here and then up here we have a couple cards this is a oh that's cool a world 2009 card so this was like i said back when worlds was uh held in more warmer climates for tropical locations and guess where this was in san diego california which is where i'm from um it's not 100 tropical but definitely warmer weather here and i was actually here in town in san diego and this was going down in fact my wife was pregnant with our son and you know my son's partly the reason why i got into pokemon later so that's that's kind of awesome and then we have this card we have a world 2011 card in portuguese uh this is in the ex style card and interestingly enough uh the 2011 worlds was again held in san diego i had no idea looks like these are the trainer cards you get when you go to the worlds and they come in those various languages that they talked about and yep all the same artwork different languages they're all from the same year this is worlds 2013 this is the english card i'm just gonna just gonna sleeve this up right here to protect it just a bit more 2013 was in vancouver canada like the binder art so i'm guessing these were literally the cards that came in this binder when you got to worlds here is the portuguese card we have the german card this one is in italian this is french it's really awesome to have these never never would have thought i would have seen or have gotten access to this kind of stuff and what's this down here in the bottom these look like little inserts for upcoming decks 2013 pokemon tcg world championships decks coming this fall and that is so much fun ray dillon thank you so much for that you went way above my expectations and work so hard on this i hope you the viewer enjoy this too sub and like if you did and click on the next video right now that was incredible
