life comma I've decided to show you a couple of things just as a friendly gesture this is a 15th century historically accurate arming taet based on the paintings of Pierro DEA Francesca and this going to down today it's a historically accurate 50th Century hat my hat off to you my wonderful Noble ones in your spectacular life you must have heard at least once or twice the name Ridley Scott that is exactly the name of the filmmaker behind fantastic movies such as blade Verner or alien and the thing is Dear Mr Scott is that two aliens you should have stuck because already as you might have noticed in this video of mine Link in the description below the last time he tried to tackle Med evil history well he gave this monstrosity of a half a helmet on the head of a knight the funny thing is they not only due to that hor absolutely ridiculous costume choice but also in general the way the movie was shot the storytelling just everything about that movie people did not like it and of course Mr Scott blamed you it's the audience fault it's these freaking Millennials fault now that already I've got to say quite annoyed me because you see Mr Scott similarly to me although in a much smaller case for me what do I owe any success I have on this platform to my viewers the same way you Mr Scott owe your success wealth and fame to the people who watch your movie so maybe a little respect is due but enough about that in silly hat today we are talking about Napoleon which is his new historical take yeah there is one thing that I really want to make 100% crystal clear this is not a video where I'm saying oh this is not perfectly historically accurate so I'm going to complain about the correct representation of Napoleon and what have you because then people are going to be like well it's not a document it's a film get over it no no no this is not what we're talking about because if that was all yeah perhaps I could have made a video of people were interested just as a form of infotainment if you will but no it's the interview that Mr Scott gave that were're going to read about the things I do for you in a Tik Tok British historian Dan snow politely discusses a few historical inaccuracies in the film trailer he prefaces it all by mentioning how he himself is a fan of read Scott and how he thinks the film will be a brilliant piece of art he even talks about how some of the scenes still look cool despite being historically inaccurate Scott in response tells the historian to get a life over reaction much already already the fact that I'm siding with a tick tocker over this tells you everything you need to know about rle Scott get a life all right let's see what else then in an interview with the times Scott says when I have issues with historians I ask excuse me mate were you there no well shut the [ __ ] up then yeah let me finish this like I've already got 17 things to say but let's finish he also seems to misunderstand how the study of history works when he says things like like all history it's been reported he adds Napoleon dies then 10 years later someone writes a book then someone takes that book and writes another and so 400 years later there is a lot of imagination in history books in where does Scott's apparent dislike of historians come from did they have issues in the past with historians too I think the major well I imagine considering Gladiator I think the majority of historians are very understanding in that historical Liberty sometimes have to be taken to make the film more ing or to advance the plot and I think most directors would say that we had to spice it up instead of telling historians to get a life precisely what an [ __ ] if he had said the former rather than the latter people would be less angry but here he isn't just ignoring historical accuracy to make a better film he's actually saying that historians don't know what they are on about claiming that his ignorance is just as valid as their expert historical knowledge that's what gets me riled up and me brother you and me and another 850,000 people I suppose okay where do I even begin I think the main reason why I've decided to make this video is because of this complete misund understanding of how history works and as a matter of fact I'd like to say the same way I'm not a filmmaker so I'm not going to go to a filmmaker and tell them how to make a movie interesting I'm not going to go to a photography expert and tell them how to do the lights I'm not going to go to a cameraman and tell them how to handle a camera so why is Mr Scott telling historians how history works also at the same time demonstrating a complete ignorance and overabundance of arrogance which often times go hand inand on the subject of Academy so in a way not only I feel that I need to sort of explain and defend how historical research actually works at a professional level considering the fact that this man has absolutely no idea what he's talking about but at the same time I'd like to mention that the way he is showing how he reacts to any form of criticism whether it comes from his own audience or whether it comes from professionals is literally appalling all he needed to do was to say look this is not a documentary I'm taking some artistic Liberties I've decided to show this instead of that because I think it looks good for the movie I mean at the end of the day sort of a similar situation that happened in Gladiator I understand why you want to have a final jewel in the Arena surrounded by The pretorians Who for some reasons are okay with you killing the emperor whatever I understand that what more interesting from a plot standpoint than for example the actual way the emperor of Rome died which was strangled in the bath by his trainer I I absolutely understand that but all he needed to do was that I'm just making a movie it's for entertainment this is not a history book but when you go and actually say well you historians know nothing did you have a time machine were you there well then shut the [ __ ] up that's when this is taken to a completely different level and any form of Defense if you will with people saying well it's Fiction it's not a history book now doesn't matter because he's taken it to a different level and that's where we are and before I actually dismantle his entire silly explanation of how history Works I'd like to underline this thing let's focus for a moment on his complaint about Millennials which of course from the point of view of a boomer I suppose is the new sly Generation Well here's the thing jenz didn't like your last jeel movie Millennials didn't like it Boomers didn't like it do you want me to keep going back generation to generation medieval people wouldn't like it Roman people would think that this helmet is stupid so it's not really something you can blame on the new generation can you if even people from the freaking Middle Ages would think that this is the stupidest thing they've ever seen Checkmate now that we handled that Mr Scott why don't we as a community tell you how actual historical research works now I myself have seen my fair share of comments coming from people who have absolutely no idea how history and research work tell me well were you there then you don't know sort of comment so this is something that I have addressed already in the comment section but today we're going full on this silly statement is based on the assumption that all a historian does is read books that were written in the past and then write more books so someone said the Roman EMP where I invade the German in this date okay cool well let me write my own book where I repeat the same thing without having any idea this is how Mr Scott and also anyone who tries to push this well were you there no so so you don't know sort of excuse bases the statement on could be all a lie well maybe it never actually happened said Invasion perhaps there was no Roman Empire at all who knows I wasn't there you wern't there we don't know no one knows in other words if you don't have a time machine history archaeology history of art literature or useless right perhaps I should put the hat back because it's raining [ __ ] today no Mr Scott the reality is that you don't know what happened because you don't study this stuff first of all when he says books Let's just call them sources since the medium varies tremendously depending on what historical account or piece of evidence we are using but there are different kinds of sources we have primary sources we have secondary sources now of course primary sources usually have higher value in the sense that a primary source being something that it was an eyewitness so I'm talking about a battle I was in that battle I was there I saw it happen I wrote it down that's a primary source eye witness whereas a secondary source is someone who quotes someone else so to speak there are also period sources and posterous sources so of course if you talk about again an invasion a battle the building of a castle and the source was written as this thing was happening it will be more valuable to us and will have a higher value in the hands of said historians and archeologist and researchers than something that was written say 400 years after the fact but then again everything should be put on the table and assessed professionally because often times it is a puzzle and you want to use all pieces not just the ones that are the most recognizable of the original picture but the thing is much deeper than that historical research is a process of collecting and interpreting data about the past through the lenses of many different subjects there are of course several problems that need to be addressed for instance at a certain level of bias in the sources which could be personal bias historical bias cultural bias political bias and the way professionals circumvent these problems is by having a multi-discipline approach just like with any point in space you need at least three points to three-dimensionally map it in place similarly if you want to know if a specific battle actually happened as described in the location mentioned in the sources you in investigate within the literary field the archaeological field and the field of history of art just to mention some of the disciplines that can be used there is also the entire scientific approach when it comes to carbon dating to the interpretation of pigments the interpretation and Analysis of several types of molecules but whatever let's talk about these three first so in the literary plane you want to look for other mentions of the battle both from the same culture but also from surrounding cultures if this was a big event it will most likely be mentioned even better if you can find mentions from the opponents of the original culture you're studying once you pinpoint the geographical location you escate that's where archaeologists make their entrance if you can find remains of the battle say armor weapons skulls inside locations you now have a much stronger indicator that the text you were trying to confirm is in fact speaking the truth then radiocarbon the stuff of course radiocarbon is not infallible but once again if the dates are close even if it's not a perfect match you have a much stronger care case now bring in art Specialists do we have iconography describing the events murals mosaics paintings drawings manuscript illumination statues triumphal columns the more you find the stronger of a case you have that what you were reading was in fact real now if you have ever read any sort of dissertation whether it be for a bachelor's degree a regular University degree um a PhD thesis still one of the first things that you find which is crucial to the uh creation of a any form of dissertation or thesis is the methodology which is pretty much what we're talking about but when it comes to like for example PhD thesis goes goes much deeper than this and as a research you have to learn to distinguish between methodology and Method methodology refers to the theoretical analysis of your research while methods refers to a systematic and orderly arrangement and measurement of your research so of course different studies will require different methodologies now another thing that happens usually at very high level sort of the research so much higher than what I do here here for example is something called triangulation this is when you mix for example three different types of methodologies which could be observation quantitative and qualitative in order to have a variety of approaches as you analyze data so the idea that all historians archaeologists researchers scientists all they do is hey here's a fifth century book let's see what it says oh it says that the emperor was crowning this year who knows maybe it's [ __ ] maybe it's not let's just go with it if this Mr Scott is how you think history is written then by all means please go back to aliens and before anyone comes up with a statement well history is written by The Victors anyways I've got this video link in the description all right in conclusion all in all is what Mr Scott said absolute nonsense absolutely is it a dangerous spreading of misinformation probably not but it does
