the post-world War II period was marked by an uneasy peace and an incense and manufacturing of heavy military Machinery as though the real conflict was still ongoing Logistics played a crucial role in the war effort and consequentially the Soviets undertook the development of a unique versatile 4-axle rocket carrier vehicle that could navigate through any terrain obstacle be the mud or ditch to solve complexity issues interestingly they simply placed two engines an experimental track based on the three Axel this 151 was presented to the authorities does this e-134 this prototype featured a complex all-wheel drive system that could rival an interact vehicle while achieving double the road speed it utilized a tank diesel valves on the engine and a custom three-speed planetary gearbox to transfer reliably to the wheels however this design faced several limitations especially a low load capacity due to the high weight caused not only by an intricate drive system the Soviet Ministry of Defense had specific requirements for the truck and in collaboration with the needs of the main missile and artillery directorate the vehicle had to be able to carry a ground-to-ground Luna and missile system these missiles could measure up to 10 meters in length and weigh about 2.5 tonnes necessitating the meticulous design of the missile carrier to enable it to navigate rivers and other obstacles with these the team responsible for the engineering of the rocket carrier vehicle and zil was headed by Vitaly Andrea vich gracio a prominent Soviet automobile designer who had previously worked on several military vehicle projects in the late 1950s the team devised a different solution to the design challenge at hand which culminated in the development of the zil-135 project the cabin of this model was relocated to the front of the vehicle with the power plant situated directly behind it to improve the reliability and simplify the complex drivetrain the engineers installed two engines behind the cabin instead of one with each of its own transmission and transfer case that delivered power only to The Wheels on the corresponding side of the truck [Applause] [Music] by adapting this design the engineers were able to eliminate differentials and delicate multiple transfer cases which reduce the weight of the vehicle and simplified its drivetrain while this approach doubled the fuel economy its novelty brought many other Advantage including the ability to continue moving with a single engine in case the other failed compared to the amphibian base model the wheelbase of the zil-135 was extended from 5.5 to 6.3 meters the outer axles on both sides of the vehicle were equipped with steering which enhanced the maneuverability of the truck alongside with a shot wheelbase of the midi wheels just imagine that fixed non-moving wheel geometry no differentials and two eight cylinders further reduced by the vehicle the passenger cabin was constructed from a frameless fiberglass which was also temperature flame and pressure resistant this feature was particularly important during rocket launches as the material would not deform under the extreme conditions although the engineers attempted to integrate the amphibian model with the missile system it proved to be highly unstable and they were concerned that the vehicle would tip over this feature would have required a much longer development period and was eventually omitted from the final production version in addition to the standard Model A Long wheelbase version of the rocket carry vehicle measuring 7.6 meters between the outer Wheels was also produced the curb weight of the chassis was approximately 10 tons with a total permissible weight of 20 tons initially the vehicle did not have any suspension and low pressure tires were the only components serving as the suspension system the straight line performance of the vehicle was limited to a maximum of 65 kilohertz per hour or 40 miles per hour however this design decision simplified the overall design and reduced weight late in production the suspension system was upgraded with the dampers and torsion bars added to the outer front and rear axles this Improvement became necessary after tests showed that the non-dempan truck performed poorly highlighting the importance of proper suspension in ensuring the vehicle's performance and stability initially the prototypes were fitted with zil-123f straight 6 engines each delivering 120 horsepower from A 5.6 liter displacement however more powerful units were later installed known as the zil 375 which proved to be the right engine for the job this gasoline engine had a simple and reliable architecture consisting of a cast and engine block and twin aluminum weight shaped heads with overhead valve system the engine featured flooring aluminum Pistons four steel connecting rods a 5 bearing Force crankshaft with 74.5 millimeter main journals and forged wet cylinder liners the valve train was gear operated ensuring High reliability and the first major overhaul was required at 110 000 kilometers with two of these engines the fuel economy was approximately 135 liters per 100 kilometers each engine had its own cooling lubrication and preheating system and each of the 530 kilogram heavy units was paired with a manual gearbox initially grachev insisted on an automatic transmission that would improve the vehicle's off-road capabilities but this idea was eventually abandoned for cost cutting reasons [Music] the engine was designed to operate in temperatures ranging from -40 to plus 40 degrees of Celsius and up to 80 percent humidity at 20 degrees of Celsius the 7 liter engine produced a big Power output of 180 horsepower 3200 RPM and a maximum torque of 466 newton meters at 1800 RPM while some may consider this to be low figures they were patchy due to the engine's low compression ratio of six and a half to one which allowed for starting by hand crank and the use of low quality fuel the decision to use this engine was partially based on the availability of parts the zl375 engine could be found in various vehicles of the time such as the URL 375 a common track produced between 1960s and 1990s and a bus lineup by the Soviet Ukrainian lazin foreign 5 proved to be a highly versatile vehicle capable of fulfilling a wide range of tasks assigned to it by the military whether it was used as a carrier or as a powerful tractor to tell other vehicles stuck in a deep snow the zil-135 was always up to the task production of these impressive machine continued until 1993 with a total of 5 000 units being produced while the Zilla 135 was employed in various countries for different even civil applications such as serving as a universal chassis or a tractor it has become increasingly rare to find one today despite the cost cutting measures that may have been implemented during its development The zil-135 Remains a remarkable achievement in engineering and a testament to its unparalleled capabilities [Music]
