perennial rye grass has been dominating Lawn Care YouTube for years including the Lawns of Brett's grasscapades Ryan Knorr and Lake House lawn care ryegrass has been a YouTuber favorite for as long as I can remember and let me tell you I'm very fond of this grass here's my lawn that I just overseeded using two of its darkest variety and after seeing the results that I got it got me wondering why is this grass so good it's fast germinating super dark green and it delivers Stripes that are more defined than the Rock's neck so it's no surprise that ryegrass has made its way into some of the nicest lawns in America so today we're going to take a look at the darkest green grass to ever exist and find out could it be a good fit for your lawn you can find rye grass in just about every lawn in the northern United States and odds are you probably have some in your lawn right now the rye grass wasn't always this desired of a grass as a matter of fact back in the day contractors used to look down upon it as a cheap seed that would just be used to fill in bare spots quickly the key word here being quickly is and it would germinate quickly but it would also die quickly due to its poor tolerance to the heat and cold but all that changed when scientists were able to create new super Elite types of rye grass that didn't have all the negative side effects that was previously known for [Music] so what exactly about this grass makes it so beloved with all your favorite YouTubers the first starts with the seating process you won't find any grass seed on the market that's easier to seed than rye grass you could seed rye grass in literally one week later you can have a full-blown lawn that's ready to move and if you compare that to a seed like Kentucky Bluegrass which can take months to fully establish that's a major selling point for ryegra and this ease of seeding rye grass us makes it a fun experience for the average DIY if I have to see Kentucky Bluegrass I look at it as more of a chore and the second reason is how dark it is in my opinion it's one of the darkest if not the darkest cool season grass to ever exist now there is an argument to be made that some Kentucky Bluegrass varieties are darker than rye grass but overall rye grass will have a much darker color than most cool season grass and if you're new to lawn care I always recommend people to start seeding with rye grass first because you'll see almost instant results and that'll give you the confidence to want to start seating more different types of grass [Music] and the third is the ability to produce some of the darkest Stripes out of all the cool season grasses not only does a stripe really good but it has this really velvety look and when you compare it to all the other cool season grasses it will have some of the darkest Stripes you will ever see so even with all the benefits that ryegrass has that doesn't mean it's not without its own corks ryegrass has grown in the Pacific Northwest in regions that have really mild climates like Oregon and Washington so those are the type of climates that it really does well in so over here in the Midwest I don't really have issues with winter die off and that's because the coldest part of the Year usually has some snow on the ground and snow will act as an insulator to protect your grass most people think that snow leads to grass dying but actually snow is a great thing for grass to have during the winter time to protect itself however I do have issues in the summertime keeping it alive because I found that just a few days of extreme heat and no water could lead to it totally dying off whereas with my Kentucky Bluegrass or my tall fescue if there's Extreme Hot temperatures and there's no water it'll just go dormant the rye grass is much more sensitive to those hot temperatures so right off the bat I'll tell you that rye grass needs more water more Fungicide and more fertilizer than most other grasses but those are all inputs that you could control if you really want to have a rye grass lawn so right now we're going to apply fertilizer application most of you guys probably just seeded or overseeded your Lawns and I always get the question when should I fertilize for the first time after seeding the answer to that is real simple all you have to do is wait for your first mole and then you can fertilize So today we're going to use some green pop by Green County fertilizer and then also this stuff right here I actually never tried it it's called RGS actually the reason why I'm throwing this down is because I saw the lawn Rebel throwing it down and he's been having some good success so we'll go ahead and throw this down along with the green pop [Music] all right so now that we put that down we're gonna put down a second application now this is completely unnecessary and most of you guys this probably won't apply to but we're gonna apply today is called plant growth regulator AKA pgr this is gonna slow down the grass but also it's going to promote tillering of the grass so it's going to start growing outwards rather than just upwards I should probably also say that I'm kind of entering experimental territory right now because the way pgr works is it slows down the grass and I just overseed it a few weeks ago I tried looking online for some answers to how soon you could apply it after overseeding and I kind of came up with no answer so I'm just going to throw it down and hope for the best if you guys just overseed it I definitely don't recommend this but if you guys want to see how the grass handles it make sure you guys stay towards the end of the video [Music] all right guys so it's been about two weeks since I applied the pgr to my overseed and I gotta say I don't see any ill effects to the grass but that doesn't mean you guys should just run out and apply pgr to your brand new grass keep in mind that I applied half the label right to this pgr's really strong stuff you definitely don't want to apply the full rate even if your grass is not new if you're doing it for the first time one of the best things about pgr is that you don't have to come out here and mow all the time you know especially now I'm really busy I just made a Facebook post talking about how I'm working crazy over time and the simple fact that I could skip a few mowings here and there makes pgr worth the end of it itself but hey if any of you guys are interested in any other types of cool season grasses say like Kentucky Bluegrass make sure you guys click this video right here I talked about all the trials and tribulations I went through with having just the Kentucky Bluegrass salon and with that this is George from princess cut piece foreign [Music]
