like and subscribe right now or you're gonna have terrible luck for the next week if you're interested in nature and wildlife you may think that the most fascinating animals in the world are now extinct these animals could include the dinosaurs bully mammoths and the huge megalodon but you may just be wrong today on 100m we'll be taking a look at animals that scientists and pretty much everyone else think are extinct and will be blowing your minds away with this single fact some of these animals could just be alive and indeed we have proved that some are stick around for number two on this list you certainly wouldn't believe your eyes number 10 the nelson shrew this tiny animal called the nelson small eared shrew was first discovered in 1894 and afterwards it was not seen again for more than a hundred years when it was discovered the animal was endemic to eastern mexico and it was actually discovered by edward william nelson in 1894 and yes that's why the animal is called nelson's shrew if you want an animal named after you perhaps you should also become an adventurer and go on adventures now back to dr nelson and his discovery after the shrew was classified they were never seen again after a series of extensive searches scientists concluded that the shrew was now extinct no one could find the animal anyway and the only reasonable conclusion was that it had gone extinct and that's the position most scientists took however they turned out to be very wrong it turned out that the scientists who searched for the animals haven't searched very well as the shrews were yet again discovered in 2004 right where they'd first been discovered despite the fact that these cute animals have been rediscovered they still remain quite endangered in fact they're a part of the top hundred endangered species on the planet number nine big fish while you can refer to this animal as the big fish it is better to call it a sealant this fish is so old that it has been alive for all of human civilization however we generally didn't know that this animal was still alive until fairly recently when scientists found the fossils of this fish they believed that it was so old that it couldn't possibly still be alive in fact to most scientists the coelacanth had been extinct for over 65 million years interestingly summer forgot to tell the seal cath this important information and it simply refused to go extinct when a south african music curator rediscovered the fish the science community couldn't believe it not only was the coelacanth still alive but it had also gone through little or no evolution sometimes nature just gets it right and perhaps the coelacanth was one of these perfect animals however we must say that the coelacanth does look quite peculiar for a perfect work of art well we'd say peculiar but others may just say the word ugly since the fish swims about 2000 feet below the surface this may have an effect on the formation of its physical characteristics so yes the seal of camp is ugly but it's not its fault number eight tiny elephants when you think of elephants you probably imagine gigantic animals that weigh a billion or one tons or some ridiculous number like that but did you know that there are some species of elephants that aren't as big as you'd imagine in fact these elephants even when fully grown do not measure up to the height of the average human being while they are still stocky these elephants are definitely not the regular ones you know however most scientists had long written them off as extinct in fact this knowledge was mainstream until a wandering scientist found the small dwarf elephants on the bornean mountains just minding their own business but how did these elephants end up here they were actually transported from their original habitat centuries ago by the sultan of sulu the sultan set them loose in the mountain ranges and they became to live quietly until they were chased upon by a wandering researcher number seven the seven foot tall irish elk the irish elk is probably the most gigantic animal of its nature that you'll ever see it could grow immensely huge antlers and could tower above man it could even leave giants like lebron james looking like dwarves as you can see this elk was gigantic and had an impressive antler span that could grow up to 12 feet scientists believe that these antlers actually developed as a way for males to compete for the best females and yes this means that the antlers were used for fighting off other suitable males in the herd however they could also be used as eye candy for interested females according to most scientists this gigantic elk used to be found all around europe from northern ireland all the way to siberia sadly they got wiped out by our most recent ice age or that's what we think we cannot say for sure maybe they're out there hiding in some mountains like the dwarf elephants who knows number six the tasmanian tiger if you've watched enough of our videos you've probably heard of the tasmanian devil while the tasmanian tiger may not be so hideously named it's actually more dangerous than the small furry creature called the tasmanian devil however it is thought to be extinct today but is that true in the 1930s the tasmanian tiger a small dog-like creature with stripes on its back was the target of the fury of farmers they believed that the animal was the one responsible for raiding chicken houses and eating all their produce and the smart thing for the farmers to do was to hunt the animals down and kill them in fact the government officials even paid farmers to hunt down as many tasmanian tigers as possible this sort of focused extermination effort was certain to drastically reduce the population of the tasmanian tigers and that's exactly what it did by the end of the 1930s the tasmanian tiger had gone extinct or that's what the government wants us to think for some reason we think there are some tasmanian tigers hiding out in the jungles of tasmania number five the 30 foot long sea cow yes there are sea cups and no they aren't literal cows in the sea they're just named that way because scientists often run out of words to name them so first what's a seek out the sea cow is basically a huge sea animal that is shaped somewhat like a manatee the animal could reach up to lengths of 30 feet and weigh up to one ton it lacked true teeth and basically used two keratinous plates within its mouth for chewing the animal mostly fed on kelps and communicated with other animals using snorts and size it was also pretty social and lived with other animals of its kind sea cow was first discovered by george willem stellar who encountered the animal when his crew and ship became shipwrecked on bering island sadly just 27 years after it was first discovered the animal was hunted into extinction by europeans or that's what we think at least the ocean is pretty large and we don't know whether the sea cow simply decided to swim off and live on the other shores let's just say if these animals were discovered to be alive we certainly wouldn't be too surprised number four the honshu wolf the honshu wolf used to be the smallest species of wolf in the world well he used to because the hauntee wolf doesn't exist anymore according to most scientists anyway but why did this wolf go extinct in the first place it looks pretty innocuous and harmless what happened to it well they were said to have been ravaged by rabies outbreaks when the disease was introduced to their habitat by domesticated dogs and cats in the airplane but that's not the only reason the honshu wolf had to leave this lovely planet the forests where the wolves lived were also being rapidly deforested to cut the story short the last honshu wolf was officially killed in 1905 however villagers have recently reported strange sightings they say that the hanshi wolves are still alive and they roam the woods in the area scientists haven't been able to ascertain the fact of this claim but it's interesting to think of could it be possible that the hunchy wolf has been alive all this time well it certainly could be but we can't say for sure number three the yangtze river dollar the yangtze river dolphin or more commonly known as the baiji is one of the most recent extinct species to die out according to most scientists there was a combination of fatal factors that led to the eventual demise of this animal some of these factors include habitat destruction and over hunting sadly some commentators say that the fate of the yangtze riverdolphin has been grim from the get-go this is because the yangtze river is its only habitat and it's near impossible for the dolphin to migrate anywhere else as china became increasingly industrialized and made heavy use the river for transportation fishing and other commercial activities the population of the dolphin began to dwindle drastically to make life for the dolphin even harder three dams were built on the river this totally sealed the dolphins fate and in 2006 the last official sighting of the species was made however since that time single dolphins have been spotted by locals all around the river in fact many fishermen have said that they've seen the dolphins swimming about the depths of the ocean so which is it is the often extinct or is it not we can't say for sure now it's time for today's best pick [Music] today's picture was sent to us by subscriber if you ever come across a picture online and would like to know more about it like its means or its origin you can send it into us who knows your picture could feature in our next video number two megalodon okay hear us out if you've watched meg and other hollywood blockbusters based on the existence of the megalodon you know that this gigantic animal isn't a joke thankfully meg has been extinct for about 3.6 million years well that's what they tell us at least but here's an interesting fact to think of more than 80 percent of the world's ocean is unmapped unexplored and unobserved so there's a huge chunk of the sea that it's not even been to is it that implausible that the huge meg is lurking somewhere in the middle of the pacific living a quiet life this would certainly not be the first time a huge animal is hiding from the gaze of annoying human beings so yes officially the mag is extinct but until we've scoured all the world's oceans searching for it we cannot say for sure before we move on i've got a little challenge for you that'll take five seconds to complete so here's the deal you just leave a like on this video smash that subscribe button and hit the notification bell and you will get 25 years of amazing luck try it it really works number one woolly mammoths woolly mammoths are an extinct species of elephants while they are often depicted as unnaturally huge in paintings and movies most woolly mammoths were just about the size of an average african elephant the bully mammoth adapted to the temperature of the last ice age by evolving a thick wool coat that protected it from the coal aside this thick wool it also had extremely elongated tusks that helped it manipulate objects fight and even forage about 11 000 years ago the woolly mammoth disappeared from the earth and scientists have not been able to pinpoint why some say this extinction event was caused by climate change while others say it was because of overhunting by human beings so could the wooly mammoth still be alive today we can't say but we do know that one explorer in 1920s wrote about seeing large woolly mammoths in siberia there have also been sightings of this huge elephant as late as the 1940s and the 1950s could they still be alive we simply don't know that's all for today guys if you enjoyed this video make sure to click on the like and subscribe button for more amazing videos goodbye and stay safe
