These upgrades take the PlayStation 2 into the FUTURE

new gaming systems and releases can feel boring or inaccessible depending on price and region maybe you just want someone to breathe a little new life into your older faves in this episode of retr pulse let's take a look at recent releases for Sony's legendary PlayStation 2 the retro gym is a digital video output mod that bypasses the noisy and kind of messy analog circuits on the PS2 and gives you HDMI currently it gives you 480p 720p 1080P and 1920 by 1440 with many great de interlacing options with direct video output coming soon for some reason to work with scalers like the retrotink 4K and pixel fx's own morph there's some drama over the basic and shiny Edition and the fact that direct mode isn't out yet but just get the basic if you're using a scaler with it and the shiny mode if not you get some clean and crisp video output and then you compare it with something like the GSM soft mods to force 480p output if you don't like their motion adaptive deerling or the Retro tank does a little bit better job of dnacing on its own we're finally getting more and new clear chassis or shell options for the PlayStation 2 lots of these have started popping up lately especially on AliExpress I'm desperately in search of some cool translucent brightly you know colored ones rather than just the clear AliExpress has a few clear ones but there's not really much by way of actual like colored ones so if you have any of those or make them hit me up I absolutely want to get a hold of them a translucent pink one has apparently popped up on eBay twice for the PS2 slim but I can never track it down so I am trying my best but the fact that we are getting more of these and more companies and groups are kind of investing in making shells again for these older consoles is huge as I'm finally at the point where I want to start modding mine up and getting new you know looks to them and things like that and I I want to get my hands on the hardware and it's a lot harder to find these days but there are lots of groups making shells for older consoles now including one that's taking surveys about which one they're going to make for the original Xbox so it is my hope that the [Music] I am so tired of losing my saves I'm so tired of swapping memory cards for 10 minutes when I just want to play my game instead of having the save where I want and having you know being able to back them up so that I don't lose them permanently maybe being able to play with them on the emulators too the MIM card Pro fixes this this is the dream memory card which holds up to a two ter micro SD card for basically unlimited game saves like you you would never ever in your life need more than this even on like a 16 gig card it has Wi-Fi transferring to transfer to your PC if you want or Cloud backups can be scheduled automatically with it it has a game ID system that allows you to identify uh what game is being played and you know automatically switch to a dedicated virtual memory card for that game one of these already exists for the PS1 in the GameCube you press a little button on the side to swap between the vmus or virtual memory cards and use it as normal and the PS1 card has x-station compatibility in game ID which automatically detects which games you're running even from the x-station which is freaking cool the ps21 which is shipping soon or Nosh depending on when you pre-ordered it expands this with a bigger OLED display externally powered USB drive support the ability to act as an SD card reader on your PC if you don't have one which is kind of wild and the ability to work with both PS2 and PS1 games on the same card with playing and opl integration support coming soon so it can work kind of like with x-station this is wild you can also launch free mcboot from it too which doesn't make sense in my brain I've had one on pre-order all year I think I just got the shipping notification so I cannot wait to get mine in the awesome people over at retr Fighters have been going through and making baller updated game controllers for older game systems and I frankly cannot get enough of them AIT do does some cool stuff too but I am all in the Retro Fighters Camp the latest is the defender a wireless controller for PS1 and PS2 that updates it to feel a bit more modern and have great battery life with USBC charging they include receivers for PS1 and PS2 or it works with the PS3 PlayStation classic Nintendo switch and PC as well over Bluetooth which is crazy now I have seen some complaints that using it as a switch controller doesn't necessarily work because of the button layouts is really annoying and no gyro but for PS2 replacement controllers as I have been wanting better wireless controllers for the PS2 for a long time this is wild I love many of my OG dual shocks I even have some cool colored ones but I really just want good wireless controllers for when I don't want the cable mess in this setup and these are absolutely perfect just make sure you don't get the Bluetooth Edition as the Bluetooth edition only works with PS3 and up because it doesn't have the receiver and the wireless tech for that for the other you know the older PS1 and PS2 this next one is not brand new but it is huge if you didn't know about it opl is the home brw software used to run PS2 ROMs from your hard drive or from ssds or USB drives or whatever when you soft mod your PlayStation 2 it went like 15 years without major updates but the latest round of updates from Grim Doomer this year finally expands the hard drive maximum capacity beyond the 2 TB cap that it was at before Beyond any hard drive size we have today along with X fat hard drive formatting support meaning you don't need to use these crazy kind of Windows XP built programs to transfer your rhs to the drive you can treat it like an ex internal drive and just drop your files straight in there in Windows or Mac or whatever this is an amazing update but frustrating to release right as I had spent four months earlier this year perfecting my my own perfect uh free H fhdb free hard drive boot instead of free memory card boot uh image to share with you all to make soft moding the PS2 easy as soon as I was finishing that project up this update dropped and made it kind of redundant just be careful using USB docs for your hard driver SSD to format it as Tito from Macho Nacho Productions found that USB enclosures seem to mess with the sector sizes for the drives making them not work with the op opl update but if you install it inside of a computer and then format it that way it works fine using the xat hard drive formatting requires using a memory card premc boot soft mod method rather than being able to use free HDD boot but there is the Grim Doomer is trying to work to make sure that that can work with free hdb 2 so in the future it might work this means you can keep so many more games given that the PS2 is a a DVD era system the games take up a lot more space and 2 tabes could not fill a whole Library uh this means you can fit so many more games on your hard drive your mx4 siio which I'll talk about in a minute USB drives and so on and you can use them all within opl like you can use games from multiple sources all together which is pretty crazy all within your PS2 even the firewire drives you could use apparently now which is crazy uh like I said free HDD boot is being worked on so hopefully it will get better from there the PlayStation 2 is a noisy Beast some of that comes from the DVD drive but a fair bit comes from the geriatric fan in the back you can swap that fan with a silent knock to a fan fans known for their top quality their low sound levels and their great airflow with some clever wiring but mounting it can be very annoying thankfully there was a big Community push for 3D printable frames that you can get for it that are now widely available or the mod has become so common now that you can just buy a full put together kit of the frame in the fan together for just like 34 bucks on Amazon and have it shipped to your door which is crazy this is a must for any PS2 when to start tinkering with it pair this with running games from the next item and you'll have a whisper quiet console mx4 siio is another cool way to run games on a PS2 when paired with freem MC boot or another soft modding tool you can access a Micro SD card plugged into the front of the memory card and Run games from it up to 2 T terab is supported on your micro SD card here and while compatibility is not 100% it is certainly a convenient way to keep your games loaded the memory card bus apparently has faster speeds than the ancient USB 1 ports on the front of the console so you don't have as many issues with like FMV streaming or anything like that these can be had on Amazon or in plenty of places super cheap I have some links in the description there is a dope PS2 slim mod from bitbuilt user wesk showc showcased by Tito from Macho Nacho it takes a specific PS2 slim motherboard cuts off a USB port removes the DVD drive and builds in the mx4 SI and makes it super tiny I'm thinking you combine this with a MIM card Pro obviously the mx4 SI and the the defender controller and USB the USBC power mod to remove more ports and make it even smaller and it would be the ultimate tiny console I think it could I think it Goro xiaoan kwani kungl Johnny Cage and more it adds new stages it adds more moves it can it adds a lot of content this is playable on the PS2 directly if you have it soft moded of course though if you play via the pcsx2 emulator you can get a new in-game menu with camera options NPC selection and such that had to be cut for the PS2 version there are a bunch more cool PS2 ROM hacks so let me
