welcome to the 31st edition of cool tools where i show you some of the things i use in my workshop that i think will make your shop time better in fact this is a special edition of the series once a year i select some of the cheapest tools for my shop that i wouldn't want to be without i didn't pay more than 30 bucks for anything in this video most of it was a lot cheaper than that yet these are all things that i have personally used for a long time in my own shop they're cheap in cost but not in quality or value there are 11 of them so we have to move quickly to fit them all in because believe me you're going to want to see them all there are a couple surprises in here i'll link to all of it below this video if you want any more information in fact i'm also going to include links to the inexpensive tools from past years episodes in case you want to load up on inexpensive things that will make your shop time better as always if any sponsors are involved the disclosed at the beginning of the video and down with the links now let's get started there is nothing worse than a work piece sliding around your bench while you try to work that's why i like these inexpensive workbench accessories they can secure my work on any surface that has a three-quarter inch dog hole without the need for expensive vices the holdfast provides powerful vertical clamping pressure for work pieces up to three inches thick i find that the movable jaw slides easily and it locks down tight in any position it's comfortable to set up even with my weak hand this style is the hold down i prefer for chopping and other aggressive work but when i'm sanding or planing or routing i like to switch to an inline clamp and a bench dog because it can hold my board flat on the bench top without any obstructions the post slips in a three-quarter inch dog hole and its low profile rises just 11 16 above the surface of the bench which leaves the entire surface of my board open for business the bench dogs themselves come in aluminum or brass and in various lengths and i love that they have a spring that keeps them from sliding out of position if you need some inexpensive clamping solutions for your workbench i recommend checking these out at the link below this is a unique table saw safety device from fastcap whom i consider to be one of the most clever innovators in this craft it's very simple but it's really well thought out the idea is to have a push stick that is always there when you need it now i've had magnetic push sticks before but this one will stick to any ferrous metal surface in pretty much any position what's really cool about it though is it's designed to stand on end taking up very little space and acting like an orange flag to remind you to use your push stick if you find yourself sometimes forgetting to use a push stick or misplacing it so it's not there when you need it this may be the solution for you you can't help but notice it and it can't walk away on you in my shop the 11th finger gets a lot of use as a secondary push stick for when i want to control the work piece with two hands it's inexpensive and like all fast cap products it's guaranteed for life even if you already have a favorite push block get one of these as a backup and as a visible reminder not to cut off your fingers check it out at the link below you've seen isotunes bluetooth hearing protection a few times on cool tools and this isn't a review of a specific model i'm just slipping this into the video to tell you that they're running a special 20 off discount for our viewers for just a few days that's twice the normal discount that we can get so if you've been dragging your feet now might be the time the code is stumpy20 or you can just use the link below this video to automatically have it entered it's good for anything they sell except their link models but only until saturday the 18th for a long time i used a simple face shield for wood turning using an angle grinder or any time i felt i needed more than just safety glasses to protect me then someone pointed out that this provides very poor protection and that a lot of protuners recommend one like this instead it's significantly more substantial but still very lightweight at just over a pound it can absorb an impact without collapsing onto your face like the other version the protection extends down to protect my chin and the top of my head the visor is a clear polycarbonate that's anti-fog and the headband can be removed and washed because who wants a nasty sweaty headband there's really not a lot to say about it it's a whole lot of protection for my pretty face for around 20 bucks i've been using it for a year now and i highly recommend it check it out at the link below woodworkers get splinters as part of the life we've chosen who among us hasn't used a pocket knife to dig one from our hand that's why i like these particular tweezers they aren't flashy but they can do something other tweezers can't because they have sharp points which can dig beneath the skin to retrieve the end of a deeply embedded splinter with more accuracy and less damage than a knife point i've used these for a few years they are fantastic i keep them in the first aid kit here in the shop and they are far superior in my opinion to the old style tweezers seriously go to the link below this video and get a pair you'll thank me later i've used all sorts of glue brushes and paddles and spreaders including silicone and i've got nothing against any of them but i keep coming back to a simple cheap acid brush because i can spread glue evenly and then i can just throw it away when i'm done there's no cleanup no fuss i can do this not because i'm a fancy millionaire woodworker but because they cost about 11 cents each when i buy them in a bulk pack of 144 this means you can use and toss 10 of them over the course of a big project and only be a little more than a dollar lighter in your wallet that's cheaper than the glue itself now if you're thinking that's wasteful since the metal handles aren't biodegradable that's fine you can wash and reuse them several times if you prefer then you can nip off the horsehair end and recycle the handle these brushes aren't a new idea for most of you but the ones i'll link to below are of high quality despite the nearly dirt cheap price so check them out speaking of spreading glue a couple years ago i discovered these rubber rollers for large glue ups and i fell in love i like them because they're rugged and durable with steel frames and natural rubber rollers they're designed for print making so they're precision ground to spread evenly i'm not sure that matters a great deal for glue but the roller surface is very smooth and easy to clean when you're finished i just rinse them with water they come in multiple sizes i like the inch and a half and the four inch versions the best it's just a simple tool that gets the job done i'll link to them below this video i think the zona razor saw is one of those little secrets of the craft that more people need to know about it's just over 10 bucks yet it cuts like a dream leaving glass smooth surfaces with minimal tear out on all sorts of applications it's 24 teeth per inch cut on a pull stroke and it leaves a razor thin curve of only a hundredth of an inch in width i use it for trimming small parts and cutting delicate joinery it's compact it's comfortable it tracks straight and it's ultra precise i wouldn't want to be without it and if you grab one from the link below i think you'll agree a couple years ago i bought some gripper smart hook push blocks to use at my jointer because i love the extra grippy sole that just seems to stick on the surface of the board during most of the cut but i especially love the tabs which automatically drop down to hook on the end of the board near the end of the cut but they're not just for jointers they excel all over the shop including the table saw for pushing those large panels over a dado set or at the router table and their 90 degree edges make them ideal at the bandsaw i find the canted handles very comfortable the smart tabs make them very versatile and the patented grippy pad makes them grippy i'll put a link to them below because i know you're going to want to check them out for yourself you won't see a premium bridge city tool in a cheap tools video very often but their mini miter square may be one of the best values in their impressive lineup at two inches by two inches it slips easily into a pocket which is great because you're going to want it nearby all the time i use it for setting up blades for laying out on work pieces for squaring up small boxes and frames and drawers honestly in the couple months that i've had it i find myself reaching for it over and over again it's precision ground from aluminum alloy with an anodized surface i love the little detachable foot i think that adds to its versatility bridge city tools aren't cheap because they're of exceptional quality but this one might be in everyone's budget check it out at the link below the point-to-point mark ii is an ingenious tool for dividing anything into equal segments its accordion body provides up to seven marking points for laying out joinery for screw locations for hardware there's countless other uses the aluminum construction is durable and it extends up to 28 inches i've had mine for about five years and it's gotten me out of several jams in that time it's one of those tools that you don't know that you need until you actually need it then you're glad you have it because it saves time and ensures accuracy i'll link to it below this video regular viewers know i've used clearview dust collection systems for nearly a decade now but what you may not know is that they also make some unique and hard to find accessories that will work on any pvc dust collection system for example they have self-cleaning blast gates that fit on both four inch and six inch pvc pipe they have adapters to attach your flex hose to the end of your four inch or six inch pvc they have high quality offset hose clamps to attach that flex hose securely without leaks and they've just developed some new wires with and without blast gates again for four and six inch pvc duct torque so if you're putting together a pvc system for your shop no matter what dust collector you're going to attach to it or if you've been struggling with leaky fittings check out clearview's clever solutions they work in my shop and if you use the link below i have a discount code that will save you some money as well that's it for this annual special edition of cool tools don't forget to use the links below i've also included links to the past year's cheap tools versions and we'll see you next time
