because if you think that any of us are gonna give you like dad like to say a single red dime you're nuts son father hello and welcome to cinema therapy i'm jonathan decker licensed therapist this is alan searight unlicensed filmmaker and i have a cheerleader apparently i'm excited to be here with you man because today we are going i'm gonna react to some stuff you're gonna react the hell out of some stuff but we're watching what knives out now we're watching knives out one of my favorite films of the last several years the night of his demise the family had gathered to celebrate your father's 85th birthday i suspect foul play i have eliminated no suspect this was a cracker jack of the movie well speaking of cracker jacks we're eating what a natural segue not cracker jack sponsored by lisa's passion for popcorn well so our guy at lisa's passion for popcorn he has been pairing popcorns like a fine wine with our film selections and today he's decided to give us mystery popcorn yeah the mystery is it's a whodunit they look exactly the same one of them is cinnamon roll and one of them is root beer float and they are both delicious knives out who done it by director ryan johnson also known for a variety of delightful independent films but especially known for looper starring bruce willis joseph gordon-levitt someone should do what old men do and die don't you just take your little gun over between your legs and do it boy and a little film called star wars the last jedi yeah yeah which is your favorite of the sequel trilogy my favorite of the sequel trilogy possibly my second favorite of all the star wars yep and there's gonna be gonna be some angry comments but bring it so why are we having me respond to this i'm a therapist so what are we we're we're gonna talk a lot about family dynamics so we're gonna be looking at the the family thrombi yeah and uh learning a whole lot about what a just really good hey ass not her name not her job hey meg how's the sjw degree coming high functioning you know sometimes i think that everything i've given my family i've done maybe without knowing or or maybe to keep them beneath me emotionally supportive family looks like yeah they're a bunch of wholesome all-americans let's do this roll it no i don't like him he's an ass but maybe an ass is what we needed oh god yeah an [ __ ] is what germany needed in 1930 homework talking politics those two things don't even complain that that always works out well in families get together come on joanie nobody's saying that isn't bad but the parents have some blame here oh for what for wanting a better life for their kids isn't that what america is these are bad i people hearing this well they're bad people having a relatable conversation that's true i have definitely had this conversation come on richard come on over she's calling on her to speak for her people yeah and hopefully side with him and represent his perspective i love that none of them know where she's going honduras guatemala mexico but as far as communication skills they're talking over each other and it's like who can be louder and more aggressive will win the argument instead of i wonder if we can meet somewhere in the middle or learn something from each other it's a conversation that was dead before it started like this is gonna go nowhere it's not a conversation it's two soliloquies over the top of each other yeah craving validation by winning the argument and that is not healthy family dynamics it's not i know i've learned something new already [Music] to see captain america play the biggest slime ball america's ass yeah like [Laughter] oh man just such a such a jerk but such a likable one you know he was craving this though as an actor oh yeah no matter how much he loves playing captain america to do if you're an actor you want to do the complete opposite you want to do i mean the whole point of being an actor is i could be other people the price of freedom is high it always has been yes all right what is this what's this arrangement mr drysdale csi kfc i don't want to be one thing all the time yeah almost right everything like that's that's the whole fun of it do you want dinner nina dinner to eat to oh my gosh bringing back memories for you did you tell me well that and just his performance is so good i mean michael shannon is a national treasure mark he elevates literally everything he's been talking over and uh but this should be such a kind of like smoking ground almost nothing part like have you been smoking grass what does that mean we all think that you deserve something financially we'd like to help you out you were never anything but good to dad and because of that we you can count on us so you know legitimately nice right by the way yeah but it's really interesting to see what happens later well a lot of people and this is what i would define the difference between actually being kind versus being nice yeah nice is about appearances kind is about what's right well and nice is when it doesn't cost you anything right right because we want to take care of you but it's not really going to cost us if we have tens of millions of dollars giving you a few thousand every now and then or giving you a lump of 10 000 or something isn't really a cost i guess that's the thing is a lot of people consider themselves good hearted if they extend charity but you have to consider your motivation right now maybe he is completely genuine you've been good to our father we want to take care of you but it's also aren't i benevolent right am i not a charitable good person and i'm not poo pooing any sort of giving or helping other people but when it really costs you is when you know what you're made of yeah and we're gonna see what they're made of in the most amazing way you know what richard you want to go you bet skippy let's go you want to go come on better watch out oh come on stop it i can handle it oh my god we got to do this more often i think it means our father finally came to his senses and cut this worthless little brat out of his will so i guess you're gonna have to sell the beamer and give your notice at the country club and kick whatever fashion drug you're on because if you think that after all the bridges you burned after all the [ __ ] you said after everything that you put this family through for the last 10 years that any of us are gonna support you that any of us are gonna give you like dad like to say a single red dime you're nuts man i really want to have more commentary over this but it's just so good father father did harlan tell you he was going to cut you out of the will yep well when he's done what none of us were strong enough to do maybe this might finally make you grow up this might be the best thing that could ever happen to you so in terms of family dynamics i mean that's some quality parenting well i mean i don't want to i don't want to state the obvious but when you spoil kids they rotten they become rotten people oh is that what happens yeah it's so interesting everyone everyone's sitting here right at home going wow that was profound jonathan that was some of your best work you did it but so many parents don't want their kids to experience any sort of discomfort or unhappiness or unpleasant and they want and they want to be their kids friends yeah and then they get all bent out of shape that their kids don't treat them with respect it's like i gave you all this stuff how come you're not grateful for it and how come you're not respecting me for doing this for you ransom oh there's so much of me and that kid confident stupid i don't know playing life like a game without consequence because the fact is your kid sees you as a means to an end they see you as you're the source of all the stuff i get and stuff replaces love and stuff replaces character i mean we talk about all these all these cheesy father knows best things about building strong character and but it's actually how people grow up to be humans who have empathy and compassion and integrity and you have to be able to deprive your kids or something like your job as a parent is not to provide an incredible life for your kids your job as a parent is to give them a secure place where they feel loved and respected and supported yeah and also that they're going to have boundaries they're going to have consequences and you're going to help them learn to make good choices not by telling them what to do and forcing them to do it but by saying okay here's your choices and here's the consequences and my job is just to follow through oh i guess that wasn't the best choice so we make a better choice next time because you're trying to prepare them for adulthood what i what i do love about the performance is he's so gleeful in his douchebaggery yeah he knows he's trash he knows it and he totally doesn't care i think this could be the best thing to happen to yeah which i mean that's the the sort of be-all end-all of completely spoiled rotten person right is being so rotten that you take glee in it yeah and it's really fun to watch okay seriously though what the hell especially when captain america is doing it right and his uncle gets in his face and chews him out and you see he doesn't even lose his cool because if the idea of i'm not a good person were offensive to me then i would get defensive and push back yeah but if i know i'm not a good person and i'm totally fine with that then you can get in my face and tell me what a piece of trash i am and i'm gonna be like wow but it'll be good nothing good is ever easy up your ass joanie you've had your teeth in this family's tit for a long time your ass oh very nice do not use that word in front of myself [Music] [Laughter] um wow well yeah not too complex at all um this will be quick i hardened thrombi being of sound mind and body and yadda yadda [Music] i hereby direct that all my assets both liquid and otherwise i leave in their entirety to marta cabrera my entire ownership of blood like wine publishing i leave in its entirety to marta cabrera the copy likewise i'll leave in the desert yeah basically he's hospice nurse right yeah [Music] so here he comes no no no no that's no that can't be can i see that please alan that's right please this can't be legal it's right he's you know he has been i don't know what to say we're his [Laughter] she's great we love you we want to we want to take care of you ouch right now linda no richard we need to talk we need to to fight this thing we're not going anywhere i said get out we are the thrombies god damn it this is still our house except it's not this is such a great moment oh sorry uh likewise the house at two dearborn drive and all belongings they're in i leave to marta cabrera [Music] oh you little [ __ ] everybody just needs to cool [Music] but yeah just how quickly they turn and how linked their once again their their charity and their goodness is it's really dependent on being absolutely filthy rich yeah being absolutely filthy rich and really it's about making themselves feel like we're good people yeah and nope they are not good people turns out turns out it's not just ransom who's an a-hole yeah they're literally all of them are terrible oh and the thing that's the thing that kind of gets glossed over in the film harlan thrombi the guy who dies is sort of portrayed as this you know lovable rascal 85 fine i'm so old i wrote all these novels everything he raised all these people yeah this is all his fault not a red dime or word of my work to a single one of them you included if anything it's it's an 11th hour hail mary to try and fix all the damage he's done yeah by spoiling his kids and his grandkids i i i love this movie uh first of all if you haven't seen it definitely watch it you can rent or buy it using our link down below um you absolutely have to watch this film it is like i said one of my favorites in the last couple years definitely my favorite film of 2019 yeah yeah super fun super and and really clever and original and all the things that we're kind of needing more of in our franchise-focused world right one of the things that ryan johnson does that is i think one of the things that people really disliked the people who disliked the last jedi this is what they disliked about it he is a huge fan of genre and he takes genre and spins it in an unexpected way so this is a whodunit yeah and he gives away who done it in the first 20 minutes of the movie pretty quick like in the first 20 minutes of the movie you find out who done it that's not the point of the movie kind of you know whodunits are usually just an agatha christie adaptation right because she's kind of the queen of it i love agatha christie sure novels i love the film and then there were none this fantastic book yes but because of that whodunits are very stereotypically british and period so there's a lot of class warfare discussion in whodunits because that's a big part of you know the discussion then if you take it but what he was able to do here is this is very obviously not even hiding there's a class warfare yeah subplot that's not a subplot it's the plot plot yeah but we said it in the modern day and it works just as well yeah people really are just people we haven't really changed that much since the 1920s when agatha christie was writing yeah and and big takeaways for me on as far as the story is concerned as far as this family is what your what your kids need from you what they always need from you is is love and respect and time and that's what he i mean he did love them for sure but he didn't show them love right he didn't show them respect he didn't give them time and now he's giving them money instead of time and love and boundaries yeah and i'm not saying don't provide for your family what i'm saying is like what your family really needs what your spouse really needs what your kids really need is you and we avoid so many this is this is an extreme example but we avoid so many behavior issues when kids have parents who are invested and involved and present and so that's my that's my more serious takeaway uh from from this film i also do 15-minute consultations for free and there's a link down there for that as well please like subscribe and hit the bell if you want to see more of these and please please share the video we need to grow as fast as we can so that we can keep making these shows uh we love doing it but we do need to reach a wider audience and i'm sure you have friends who aren't as screwed up as the thrombies they really need this basically we we i say i say boy we don't want this channel here to die a horrible horrible death so go on and share right down below tell your little friends about us telling some kind words we'd be eternally grateful thank you for that foghorn leghorn drawl so until next time lie till you puke eat eat eat definitely eat and watch movies detective if you want my insight into the family none of them are murderers that's my insight and yet be it cruel or confident this machine unerringly arrives at the truth that's what it does
