lives on 9/11 five years ago and now the crowd in anticipation with the former players forming a tunnel Brady Quinn Travis Thomas tons of the Cal State leading the way [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] there comes in 41 years Joe Paterno [Music] [Music] kickoff time approaches we'll take a break and be right back as the Vonage countdown to notre-dame kickoff continues from Notre Dame Stadium Notre Dame football is brought to you by vonage a Notre Dame Stadium the 186 consecutive sellout then this game had more requests for tickets than any other game in Notre Dame history as the 19th ranked Nittany Lions take on the fourth ranked Irish of Notre Dame welcome to Notre Dame Stadium Tom Hammond Pat Haden ready for this home opener for the Irish and intriguing coaching matchup one of the greatest college coaches of all time Joe Paterno in his 41st year as the head coach in Happy Valley and of course Charlie Weis has his own mystique a rapidly growing only a second season but the Irish faithful in love with him after he turned their team around last year same similar situation with the quarterback today he holds 30 Notre Dame records at all the biggest thing is he he complete a 65 percent of his passes prior to Charlie Weis come he only completed about 50% almost 4,000 yards in that 32 touchdown passes by the way 21 of them have come right here but you know last week although it wasn't through his best performance he still won the game with his legs not so much his arm on the quarterback draw so they still managed to win and that's a good thing with Brady Quinn's not playing your best you still managed a win that's a good thing for the Irish well the rising star of course is Penn State's Anthony Morelli the first time he threw a pass in the game against Akron last week he threw a 42-yard touchdown that's a good start he completed 7 of his first 10 passes you know he's a big strong arm he's 64 he's been waiting for 3 years for this on opportunity you talk to every coach every coach including Charlie Weis receivers says he could just clear it out and so I think the key thing for him he's actually getting his running to use that stronger this time last week they only ran for 76 yards the offensive line had a little bit of a struggle so for Anthony Morel like the routing to perform to his capability and use that strong all right the stage is set match of two teams with national title aspirations as the Nittany Lions visit Notre Dame Stadium for the first time since 1992 Penn State and Notre Dame coming up glad you're with us on a hot and humid afternoon in northern Indiana Penn State and Notre Dame Penn State wins the toss they defer to the second half so Notre Dame today's game Kevin Kelley has them all teed up to kick it off for the Nittany Lions there he is number 23 and the Irish sent a couple of freshmen deep to return the cake west and wall near you or they really want to improve this year in the kickoff returns last week they had two of them totaling 79 yards [Applause] the kickoff it'll be taken by West kneeled down up in the end we kick by Kelly westbound's it deep in his own end zone and the Irish with Brady Quinn under center will start from her own 20-yard line that's what he did and that narrow escape in Atlanta last week against Georgia Tech from he had six balls dropped though Tom he was a little critical of his own play was Brady Quinn play from scrimmage adidas starting lineups for the Irish those are the backs and receivers and the veteran line up front with the exception of the freshman Sam Young starting again at right tackle when backs away from center and lines up in the shotgun Darrius Walker flanking him to the air and it's a screen pass to Walker Walker bosses the 40-yard line for a first down to the 32 where Stroh out--oh chases him out of bounds starting defensive lineup for the Nittany Lions Shaw Alford Johnson and saw front they sometimes play a four-man front sometimes two three sometimes even a two against Akron last week buzz luskey maybe the best linebacker in the country lead and Connor the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week after 13 tackles against Akron are Penn State adidas starting lineups Quinn no pressure at all Samar's there when a wrestling match with Dan Connor for a gain of five yards one of those linebackers he's one of the three or four or five Reese's they call it linebacker you this year again and Connor big game last week with 13 tackles and a couple of sacks there's Paul Plus Leslie off a knee injury no first game back last week played well again but all four of their linebackers actually they play five are played Blair very very well the first week though today with its no huddle offense [Applause] Lourdes has a man open catch the loose on the hit Anastasio had it for a moment dislodged by Tony Davis with a vicious hit good defensive play by Davis the sophomore from Warren Ohio new defensive secondary people for the Nittany Lions this year held up well last week again saw Akron a little different level of competition with an all-american receiver in Jeff Samardzija but a nice tackle there by Tony Davis forces the incompletion so it'll be third down for the Irish on their opening drive of the game nice work by some of the oil baron Penn State three wide reciever formation for the Warriors get as he releases and it's thought by crossing the tight end did he get enough for the first down a spot on the football appears they did crossing that yellow line that marks first down yardage first down [Applause] make it tougher tight ends all season long see that first of all it's horrific rush on Brady Quinn and then perfectly thrown ball in between a linebacker Plus thought the pass lesney and then the defensive back but a perfect throw in a tough catch by the Titan Carlson Darius Walker first running play of the game that's a couple of yards to the 45 where Edie Johnson and the defensive front for the Nittany Lions makes the tackle you know you look at the think about this Irish team Tom you know they were a little bit sluggish last week it's a pretty good Georgia Tech team I thought but you still have a great quarterback they can experience offensive line and all-american you know wide receiver a guy is rushed for a thousand yards Darius Walker but they're still replacing 41 capes and catches by Fasano and 69 by Maurice Stovall play-action fake and Quinn's [Applause] exactly wide open was he I mean you talk about a a touch pass it has to go over just over the defenders arms and shoulder pads perfect throw by Brady Quinn that time against the linebacker Dean Connor boy Connor had good coverage still it went for twenty nine yards and the Irish continue to force the tempo of the game and to limit the Nittany Lion substitutions by going through there no huddle Quinn nothing there unloads underneath to Walker out of the backfield for a short game buzz Leslie hits him immediately we had a chance to talk to Darius Walker this week and you know he's no longer just a runner I mean you know he they said a record actually last year for receptions by a running back Notre Dame history caught 43 rushed for over a thousand yards but did you feel like he was still forgotten yeah well he knows he's worked to become a complete player and he really has and the young man has charisma I tell you that if you sit down to talk to him lights up the room wins only missed one pass there's another completion constant again on the receiving end that's the third catch of this Drive by crossing the tight end Nolan McCready makes the tackle you know he interesting surely wise play calls again here he scripts his first 15 plays Pataki really would take his offense day strength in the early right in the middle of the defense where all those great linebackers play it's only been one run so far meanwhile Brady Quinn has hit six of seven the times always plead to the middle linebacker to set up the protection from the 13 yard line Darius Walker one thing we've noticed about Walker fat is his patients head up looking allowing his linemen to make the blocks before he makes his cut dan Conner got him that time after he gained about four yards on first down you know as a running back he just can't get too anxious and rush things but boy he's got great vision maybe not the fastest guy in Division one but boy he is so productive and he just sees the field and turns it on what he has to Brady Quinn sixes 765 yards to three different receivers he has down at the Penn State with three tight ends pitch it to Walker he's wrestled down by John Lee the backup linebacker and the first penalty of the game last week some of them really drive killers as well Steve payment of the big ten is the referee and it's a holding call against the Irish [Applause] Walker you know I think maybe Freeman [Music] number 87 second down Marcus Freeman called for the hold nice play by Sean Lee to the sophomore linebacker from Pittsburgh he was blocked and got off the block to make the tackle of Walker and then the penalty against Notre Dame puts it back to the 20-yard line it will be second down and 17 [Applause] Samarra and mostly Minh resets to the top of the formation on the slides [Applause] hi Jim Shaw good hustle play by Jim Shaw I was doubtful whether Jim was even going to be able to play heard this ankle last week early in the game against Akron didn't return but the defensive end just kind of kept coming the screen got tied up I Ryan Harris to kind of state with the play and then made the play on Brady Quinn transfer for Isis Jim Shaw his brother John linemen offensive lineman for Alliance 2/3 along to the Irish pugs [Applause] almost intercepted should have been intercepted probably as cerrado had it there's a little behind him perhaps but a bad throw by Brady Quinn as the pressure got to him and so Carl Joya will come out to attempt a field goal after missing two against Georgia Tech just outside you know Jeff Samardzija was ran' little postman was open early Brady threw it just a little bit late hirato secured attempt by Julia [Applause] mr. teammate of Jeff Samardzija [Applause] well the penalty prevents them from scoring the touchdowns but the Irish has taped the opening kickoff marched down the field and get three against Joe Paterno's Nittany Lions as Joya gives his first field goal of the season after missing two last week they said the problem was his plant foot looks to have that worked out as the Irish get on the board first they lead Penn State Notre Dame football is brought to you by General Motors a new level of quality a new level of confidence by Powerade Ford is what you make it and by Comcast watch more high-def movies with HD from Comcast where HD movies live Tom Hammond Pat Haden Lois Johnson sold out Notre Dame Stadium hot and humid afternoon and the aerial pictures courtesy of Goodyear bringing innovative technology to you amazing man is been 41 seasons he's been on the staff for 57 years overall and 355 wins 13 11 wins season 7 unbeaten seasons you know two national championships graduation rate over 85% what you're saying is a complete coach who does it the right way and getting tenure which makes him arguably the greatest coach ever in college football certainly among just with a short kickoff for Notre Dame and the return by williams derrick williams with the return across the 25-yard line so Anthony Morelli will lead his offense out onto the field against Akron 16 of 32 in mentioned earlier first time he threw a fast a 42-yard touchdown strike and everyone who sees him talks about his arm straight his coaches opposing coaches everyone and we'll look at our starting lineups brought to you by adidas backs and receivers for the Nittany Lions and there is Derrick Williams they wanted to get the ball as many times as they can Tony had a little subpar game in the opener gets after but he is good [Applause] from the 27 yard line Morelli with a play-action trade tastes from the pocket but he finds his fare back on to the 40-yard line Garrett Landry caught him from behind but not until he had ripped off 15 yards go to opening call you know the fullback for Penn State touches the ball we know once there be papal election and have a new pope to the gun defensive front for the Irish on our adidas defensive starting lineups for a Notre Dame Talley Landry laws Abbey Amiri [Applause] special teams captain of the special teams he'll be a three week today resets marelli fake stopped before reaching the line of scrimmage by Chris Roman Maurice from junior Chris Fromm and we just talked about he and Ronald Talley share that right defensive end position on third downs they've been bringing in they brought in a freshman last week Maurice Richardson for pass-rush but there's pumpkin against the starts mostly against teams and Starkville three wide receivers and talian gets the store when they play teams in conventional formations for almost 50 years seniors [Applause] steps up in the pocket clip set out complete in the Irish territory the Georgians or would he may be just short of the freighter that looks like about nine yards where they spawn yards watch some tape of Jordan last year this is a guy that does not drop the ball really sure hands everybody talks about Derrick Williams and Dean unbuttoned the two starting wide receiver is pretty good but Jordan Norwood be the best receiver best why in the safety Stokes at Penn State just across midfield draw playing hand off head tackle by Z Bukowski but not before he had first aid on the Artic as Penn State keeps the sticks movie Tony hunts a guy ran for over a thousand yards last week good pass protector but last week they really struggled running in instead of cop illegal 76 yards a lot of penetration by the Dacron defensive front so Tony hunt needs to be featured in this game to give auntie Morelli but the offensive line is going to have to do a job up front against this motor Dave from the senior from Alex Virginia just short of two thousand yards [Applause] [Applause] by Thomson a caste Oh terrific mocking Levi Brown the left tackle Gerard the dogon the left guard to a terrific job clearing the way for Tony hunt nice cut was a little bit out of position there because those two good cuts and once again Thomas Bukowski saves a touchdown he did it twice last week good vision by Tony Hawk [Applause] Derrick Williams takes the snap from center in hands and Williams number two men she just was playing in the quarterback position there and it lined up as a shotgun quarterback returned the kick you know an amazing guy promising freshman year last year plus setback we broke his arm against Michigan but started the first seven games and caught 22 passes for touchdown had 22 carries and three touchdowns and then three kickoff returns an average 21 yards Williams did play some in high school in Greenbelt Maryland [Applause] it's the snap rush defense comes up in a hurry to stop but back for a gain of a yard or so Richardson the first two hitting that's two straight tackles for Mike Richardson and Robin wood enjoined him yeah Mike Richardson has been a sure tackler the last couple of years they're very very good tackler Maurice Richardson that the speed rusher that you mentioned the freshman from [Applause] get some speed in motion it's his way impose it to the party darling makes the reception and then Travis Thomas holds on for dear life to the big fellow nearly 250 pounds Jojo pause considering whether he's going to go for it on fourth it's going to be four thousand two fourth and - sighs - attempt to tie it what a field goal attempt it'll be Kevin Kelly has hit both of his attempts against Akron last week and of course he had that always from goat - goat to hero the game-winner the attempt jason Ganner they hold her who picked it up and remember last week jason gainer you know slipped on a fake field goal and in mishandled a stamp last week as well does it to the second week in a row so a good drive all for not they does a miscue on special teams so the Penn State offense looks sharp moving the ball downfield the drive stalls and the field goal attempt goes awry Charlie Weis in the Irish maintained a three-point lead on a hot day those tiles come in handy they handed out 80,000 of them today to the fans coming in every fan got a towel the Irish for the 3-nothing lead just over five minutes to go in the opening quarter first-time Notre Dame play 63 yards a 36-yard joy of field goal put them up with the screen up and Brady Quinn hit six of eight on that opening drive [Applause] and it - Darius Walker broke a tackle it's the only managed a couple of yards and looks like they've spotted after a gain of one Tim Shaw made the tackle for Penn State Tim Shaw number 20 played a lot of positions last week they list him as a linebacker but plays a lot of defensive end I started all 12 games last year had 76 tackles and four and a half sacks bunch of tackles for loss just there's a lot of different things well particularly it was very very versatile last week because happened when the seven graduate students on this Penn State team [Applause] thrown down by Jay offered he kind of broke away from offered to start with but then offered recovered and spun him to the turf he offers the only returning defensive lineman for the Nittany Lions but he's a good one have come back time which is a real good inside push by number thirteen here you know good pass rusher as well at eight sacks last year from an inside position you love guys that can force to pressure inside because it allows those outside linebackers to put a lot of pressure on him but he's also there snapper on fuel bowls in extra points Notre Dame four lives here McKnight Anastasio Somoza and Grimes the to down linemen set that time by can stay on defense this first catch of the game he just sat down in the middle of the Penn State defense because he finally caught him but not until he had 14 yards and a third down conversion for the Irish boy his Brady Quinn happy to have Rhema McKnight back talked to him yesterday said boy it's a breath of fresh air happy number five the big target caught eight passes last week and you know Charlie Weis was saying to us yesterday even though he played pretty well last week he really wasn't totally sure about his knee he said after that last week's game he came out healthy expected a big day today from it had a great week of practice he finally tested that injured knee and has confidence in it again Darius Walker nowhere to go somebody just reached her he was caught now Connor was blocked on the ground and reached his hand out to make the tackle and he was Conner and hit Johnson both got through their hand there and right at the bottom they go ahead Johnson their defensive tackle Connor at the outside linebacker watch the man inside right here number 92 he's down on the ground getting squashed by Dan Santucci and reaches his right who's got a high D no big body of Santucci but heads-up play by Ed Johnson got him by the ankle in there how long until Connor put him down so something in ten from their own 34 [Applause] complete Samar's his hands I don't think I saw last year was a drop by Jeff Samardzija well I was very high but in that last year we became a normal thing for him to catch those kind of balls just the margin he caught 15 touchdown passes in one season last year only Dwayne Church at USC who caught more but really remarkable and you think in the context of some of the other receivers that have played here in the past Tim Brown is an example but he caught 12 touchdowns in four years Heisman winner yeah we're down in ten from the gun for wides mr. scramble free trying to get to the outside it'll be close to the first down I don't think he quite made it we do know this about Brady Quinn he be go for is a pretty good in a short yardage quarterback how about perfect play by their sprints linebackers in Connor played so well last week forces to punt by Notre Dame Jeff price did a good job against Georgia Tech his five months averaging over 50 yards even a napkin seller like 42 yards times Corrado is deep for Penn State morado says get away from it takes a lateral bounce and will go out of bounds about the 24 yard line so Penn State's defense holds Notre Dame and a 33 yard putt will turn it over to the these schools by the way first started playing football in 1887 did their first season did you fill itself as a men's at Club meeting down here Charlie Weis and Brady Quinn Brady Quinn's the mainframe and Charlie Weis rights to code and it was a pretty good combination last week not so good on that last Drive however as Penn State takes over today's first down line brought to you by Xerox move the ball well on their first possession before misfiring on a field goal attempt fail it off - once the AJ Wallace who had a big game against Oxford on the reverse last week picks that one for 17 yards at a Nittany Lion first down guess whose numbers he's wearing - Michael Robinson's number from a year ago a guy who had 137 all for the yards last week as a true freshman now he's generally a defensive back the second reverse he's run and Joey Porter not afraid to use his freshman and you see what an offensive coordinator Galen Hall is pulling out a few tricks [Applause] goodbye Morelli he found a dion butler going to his knees but the pass was perfectly placed for a 12-yard gain there's Galen Hall and calling the plays for Penn State idea what a throw by Anthony Borrelia we talked about his strong arm and even Charlie Weis was talking to us yesterday about it just a drill shot to di Butler India Butler got down low before the hip that's an awfully good Morelli Morelli the game for for for just under 30 seconds to go in the first quarter Penn State again in Notre Dame territory draw play handoff Tony hunt Sivakasi hit Bukowski stuffed the whole and still trying to unstack today's ball tally comes out with him zippy Kowski made the hit tally comes up with a fumble first turnover of the game it comes to Bukowski McKenna affect the game in a lot of different ways as a punt returner as we saw last year as a leader on defense in here causing the turtle just got the right shoulder right arm in there tenet uh get out ball comes loose and there's talent the first big break to the game a turnover by Penn State and timeout 17 seconds to go first quarter three nothing Notre Dame leading Penn State's the officials upstairs dick Koenig the from the big ten is the man looking at the replay to make sure the fall was correct on the field and that evidently it was as Notre Dame takes over at the Irish 46 yard line play-action fake Brady Quinn dropped by swap his fullback spent a couple drops rush walk again lines to but he he's a great lead Walker powerful guy the choice the same boy hopes to get up by nine points some game and let him just kind of run the clock out and that play will bring the first quarter to a close to tradition-rich programs the Irish in jo paas Nittany Lions matched up at Notre Dame Stadium we'll be back after these messages from your local station you're watching the Dame football presented five on edge ready to start the second quarter in the new name stadium with the Irish leading to Vicky Lyons of Penn State three nothing and Notre Dame has the ball second down and ten from the Irish 46 yard line it's seven of 11 passes and complete to McKnight two latches on to its and then the debt amounts by Justin key the gain of ten right at the first down marker now Raymond McKnight gives Brady Quinn another large target at 6:00 to hit a big catch last week drop one at the time but to be a co number one receiver with Jeff Samardzija two big guys on the outside injured his knee in the second game of the season last year after being the top receiver for the Irish in 2003 and 2004 47 receptions and 42 receptions in each of those years Quinn [Applause] well that's up when you get him down Tony Davis got a piece of him and Shawn Lee got a piece of him but he doesn't go down easily right on wait we've seen Brady Quinn break a lot of would-be sacks and make big plays with breaking tackles Tony Davis the corner twist number 45 Sean lead there as well he's made a couple of good plays yeah you know they just took too long fake the dive to Walker and then fake the reverse and then the defense was all over it so it's second down in 17 [Applause] there's Walker near the center of the defense that's a rainy Quinn became a 65 percent completion passer you know before charlie weis arrived he was completed about 50 percent because he wouldn't take those check downs and this is who actually told charlie weis a quarterback throw to the Jenkin that was a perfect down to do it on the second very long and Darius walk or a very capable receiver city center Notre Dame record last year with 43 catches you see how his percentages have improved he's nine of 13 today he needs another we're not going to give a lot of easy ones to Samardzija in McKnight they have playing really deep coverage on those two guys first charge the play clock down to three Notre Dame calls a timeout their first time out of the game so Brady Quinn will come to the sidelines to confer with Charlie Weis we'll take a break three nothing Irish five straight tournaments just ball on the field away the tomczykowski Mohawk touch is very much in evidence and the stands here [Applause] as Leslie had a piece of him Tim Shaw was there as well you know Tom the amazing thing it was a three-man rush and Jay Alfred number 13 we saw how powerful he is [Applause] [Music] last year Samara was the guy he picked up the big plays on third down take it to him [Applause] so Marcia and handed to number three Darius Walker nicely designed in called play by Charlie Weis we talked to him this week about play calling better and look everyone's expecting just what she said that toss the stars is so fake it to him big hole for Walker watch this Leslie was taken out by one of the big linemen couldn't get there but everybody was looking at just samara and Bob Morton does his job where's the way for Darius Walker in a clever play that picks up the first 13 yard game hold Duncan in at right tackle now replacing freshman Sam young Duncan a sophomore from Georgia tackled by Shawn Lee that's two in a row for him on Darius Walker charlize the guy that came in for pause bus Leslie when he went out in the Orange Bowl and had five tackles after that played three wears one of those western Pennsylvania guy loves football it's important to land a Orsini's bus loves me his practices hards always built the main need of himself they recruited as a matter of fact Quinn is calling an [Music] [Applause] Samar's latches on to it Tony Davis pushes him out of bounds but if some are German when they started the season last year Tom he was the number three receiver and then there was an injury to Rhema McKnight he became the featured guy caught those 15 touchdown passes on 77 got some catches just you know he stole my bike at 6'5 he's so graceful big target you don't have to make a perfect world for him to catch it so you know the story fifth round draft choice of the Chicago Cubs played minor league Bay in the summer three tight ends here Carson Freeman and etemon Walker dancing looking for this scene when the defense finds it squirts through as the Irish first down Connor and Johnson attacker another one of those patient ones dition by the Nifty Darius Walker there's only has runs in his career over 30 yards in his a you know over 450 runs but he measure I think there is water I mean he's a complete back for Texas quarterback it's a good receiver good runner to revision that's from a player that as a freshman was taken out in passing situations now he knows all the coverages and receiver as well to infix [Applause] last week three Quinn did a little bit to throw the ball out of the end zone out of the boundary last year he kept every ball in the field of play so his receivers had a chance and oftentimes they did with that one just a little bit too long wasn't in the field of play but again once it's a second time this Drive go Tom they faked that little look pass to Samardzija and then that time faked the look went up to Rayna McKnight they certainly have everyone looking for it and why not that's in Samara to the left of the oration top of the stream Quinn has hit 10 of 15 404 yards fake to Walker [Applause] John Carlson poor throw by Brady Quinn Justin came defending what alliance Justin King number one number seven last year had a remarkable freshman year in the chase bold little changeup speed there he was over for the touchdown just to I just as he was at the beginning the game last week against Georgia Tech we took out the camera did John Carlson on the shotgun started appeared it will be against the Irish step off five the second penalty against Notre Dame's Penn State has been penalty free number 55 that's a five-yard penalty remains third down Eric Olson the freshman guard from Staten Island New York surely Weiss puts in from game to game you know that look past baby average ten yards a throw last year they get up the throw quickly they'd had to fake saw fit to a place it's always it for him adjusting to what the defense gives you right you can't take away everything that's what he's saying it he could he has to just even of course negated [Applause] [Music] intercepted McCready McCready had it and his sights bounced off his pass incomplete boy absolutely Golan McCready had an absolute bead on that fall with a three-man rush eight guys back you know they're just trying to keep everything in front of them you know Tom Bradley the defensive coordinators been there for 29 years in and we're not going to give up a lot of big place we're almost tipped there by Donnie Johnson as well good defensive scheme by Tom Bradley 35-yard field goal attempt by Carl Joya he made his first [Applause] it's the uprights so after missing two last week joyeux to four to MacCready almost picked it off Brady Quinn has missed his last three passes and has not looked sharp in the last few minutes the irish again settled for a field goal attempt but they do up their lead to six from Notre Dame Stadium Tom Hammond Pat Haden Lois Johnson it ain't just kicking a field goal to go up six nothing on Penn State's Bobby Reyes the Irish and Derrick Williams [Applause] Thomas specialties hit for the Irish touch for Derrick Williams 33 to go secondly Lions who haven't been their own worst enemy today watched a field goal attempt missed interception and a fumble [Applause] running fight hunt picking his way forward dancing across the 25 to the 26 yard line Maurice from junior the Irish Tony hunt looks good learning this game doesn't over a thousand yards a year ago and receiver as well 20 catches and when you talk to coaches to say they say you know he plays well without the ball which means he's a very good pass blocker it was big old guy at 230 pounds this boys serious [Applause] spun to the turn factory picks up a Nittany Lion first down let's go to beloved boy the offensive line looks so much better and more comfortable than they did last week there were four new starters the Romanian guy number 67 Levi Brown back from last year what a season he had Levi did there he is a horse and a half as you say you know they averaged 212 yards rushing last year a lot of those yards keep right 67 from Norfolk Virginia 328 pounds second team all-american All Big Ten a season ago Mirani swing pass complete to Williams Williams goes with wooden and what not to know about Tom you mentioned some of the you know the miscues for pet state kept this game close really special teams is enforcement and then the fumble caused by Tom's to Bukowski so special teams in the offense and in the defense a sure interception by McCready out of his hands allowed to a field goal by Notre Dame but that really has been the difficult in the difference second down play in the backfield Maurice from junior got the penetration he was fun talking to Maurice from junior yesterday came in and visit to us head of whole backpack full full of books from his anthropology class and Spanish guy said no he's playing middle linebacker this years as a minnow in a lot more plays a lot more tackles in the middle nice game last weekend a nice tackle there one second down Morelli on look at no respawn Junior is dad [Applause] Miami the screen right now Morelli changing the play the other way tipped pass complete federal laws tips the ball it falls incomplete and brings up a fourth bound for Penn State you know Trevor laws can play high or low his nickname is the rodent remember last year he got a couple of real low sacks he kind of crawled and he got Matt Leinart here at against USC that time he went high in a perfectly time jumped by the rodent to tip it away [Applause] series by the eros kappa no simp information for Penn State Bukowski awaits the meet zippa Kowski returned to last year four touchdowns in hana almost had a big one last week Oh sends it on its ways that a Kowski does not follow from all the Irish got it back Irish didn't get it back boy azita Kowski has never called a fair catch Tom and he should have that time yeah rashon McNeal the Irish who avert disaster great 9 yard punt good coverage that son to buy Donny Johnson but you know he is just he just refuses to fair catch I don't recall one all last year didn't have any last week Irish birth to turn over they get the ball back leading by six all the breaks have gone the way of the Irish so far in the first half they lead six nothing the latest break Tom's if a cow skis fumbled punt recovered by McNeil his teammates as we go down to the sidelines check with Lewis Johnson all right Tom thanks a lot but we saw Brady Quinn missed a couple of passes in that last series and I watched him when he came off the field look relaxed weather is normal progression on the phone that type of deal but John latina the offensive line coach was not relaxed he was all over his guys unhappy with their level of production he said he wants more intensity more importantly he said more focus no more false start penalties on them he wants him to move this Penn State defense back on this series Tom all right Lewis meanwhile Brady Quinn who began the game hitting six in his first seven passes is only for ten cents sweet Walker Walker's cuts up the field across the 30 to the 31 yard line Edie Johnson tracks him down at that point you know Sam young you mentioned that when you do this tardy - number 74 for the Irish true freshman first Irish freshman ever to start in the offensive line with big ole body this is he's number 74 we're playing right takei he was six feet in 7th grade in 6 4 and 7th grade he may replace Pluto as the ninth planet in our solar system that was high school all-american in Fort Lauderdale [Music] from the Irish that's why Paul was lovely in that play the way he stuffed that hole is it was a consensus all-american last year was Leslie he does just about everything will number 31 watch how he feel the fills the hole good read steps outside it actually sees me with Sean bleep again Sean Lee who's having quite a game you know I think you can just put anybody's first half so Schwab will stuff to know the carry its third down in two empty backfield as they send Walker in motion to Freeman the tight end he's going to be very close to the first down if the spot is correct it will be a cross that yellow line for the first Dan hunter tripped him up but it looked like they were gonna go to Anastasio would have been intercepted had he gone that way instead he went underneath for the tied in yeah good play there good read by Brady Quinn knowing they just needed a yard to get it we mentioned that yellow line the first down line is presented by Xerox so from the 35-yard line first down for the irish rock shows just over six minutes to go second quarter [Applause] from Martha he's inside the 40-yard line a big gain of 27 yards Johnny Johnson tracks down Samara but not until he has the big reception you know even though Jeff Samardzija is a big receiver and a big guy over almost 220 pounds he gets off the line of scrimmage pretty quickly finds a little soft spot little hole well throw ball there by Brady Quinn gets the chains moving he was absolutely wide open tough to lose him first down at the Nittany Lion 39 yard line and Amos knocked on the door a couple times they had to settle for a field goal on each occasion my sketch made a mold count samartha who else he was out of bounds muster penalty will be a hold against Notre Dame I think was Bob Morgan John latinas Louis Johnson was reporting kind of getting after the offensive lineman Nathan which I said was yesterday holding offense number 78 that's a ten-yard penalty and it remains first down Center John Sullivan 78 is John Carlson the center John Sullivan Sullivan shoes behind the stately said bottom or call by the officials John Stovall had a big couple of big blocks on Brady Quinn runs last week that takedown whistled though making it first down in 20 [Applause] and here's Quinn changing the play they are then under Center about to take the snap and changes it it was underneath but he went to some marshal it's completely white didn't have a man within 10 yards of him and all three wide receivers right down here yeah up top and Walker was open here as well trying to get the ball down the field the two guys open was really locked in on just the Marge of that throw as smart just so good it's hard not to be locked into him you know because he can throw the ball up even when he's covered all the times he catches the ball as he did last week but that's not the Brady claim we have seen here he is lazy these two the 17-yard John Carlson is going to develop into quite a weapon for Brady Quinn that was second in 20 Jerald John Carlson gets up the field for about 30 yards ready to do the exact another perfect throw the plain double coverage on the outside to try to take away Samara and Rayna McKnight and if you have a tight end they can catch matched up with a linebacker as good as closes up as Leslie is it's still a mismatch perfect throw by Quinn to Carlson 17 yard line first down Notre Dame Arius Walker near the end of today's game will select the Chevrolet players of the game from each team to honor their determination an outstanding play Chevrolet will make a $1,000 contribution to each University's general scholarship fund Chevy an American Revolution they have a John Carlson he's caught four passes 74 yards and you know they've been in traffic lady Quinn's hit 304 460 yards he has a second in law here Shh one taco dukes another finally sweets beyster Otto [Applause] ten yards again you know the double coverage on the outside he's a little softer on the inside the settlement does a nice job walking plus less knee and then Darius Walker just breaks a tackle right - breaking the tackle it's a Alford and so it will be first and goal from the seven yard line for Notre Dame [Applause] Crossing Freeman and etemon three tight ends to the Irish the lone setback is Darius Walker one whiteout Samara [Applause] this time of Jeff Samardzija gets the left foot down to the touch if you mention Thomas first this year 15 last year and he's hadn't gotten rhythm in this driver really got it going he did he made the 32-yard reception that set it up and and it is Jeff's immersion with another sparkling catch every time he takes the field you know you're gonna get something like this well you know he makes the routine catches he makes the difficult catches then he makes the absolutely remarkable catches that was kind of more of the difficult one I made the remarkable one who's last week against Georgia Tech but you know you can have him covered and he's still open you give him a chance 13-nothing Irish Quinn throws his first touchdown pass of the season his coach says he has it all there's three different components that make up any legitimate quarterback though to the layman it's the physical attributes of what she has all he has a great psyche or psychological approach to the game and is a great mental approach to the game a certain special Moxie that comes out with all three quarterbacks he seems to have and for the ladies in the in the house you know he's good-looking on top of this there's the heartthrob the matinee Iowa Brady quitted his first touchdown pass to the season he was four or five on that drive 67 yards as Dallas will nine plays 75 yards for the first touchdown of the game Derrick Williams takes the rankest kickoff nearly broke free but then stopped short of the 20 yard line you know a familiar sign I saw this weekend and walking around the Notre Dame carrot campus was Brady please marry my sister I'd be good to get into that family after next year the signs all over for this this has been a real zoo around here for the last two or three days I mean that in a good way all the hoopla surrounding another intensified by the fact that the team is ranked on the tie for fourth in the nation Derrick Williams Williams takes the snap in the shotgun and advances four or five yards on first down with a Nittany Lions who have three and a half minutes to work with now before half-time it's the same is in that twice now Andy Morelli lines up as a wide receiver and Williams legs up as a shotgun quarterback and they're trying to get him really combined about 20 touches between kickoff returns punt returns handoffs in receptions marilla's hit five of his six passes in this first time [Applause] the 30 dragged down from behind by Ambrose wooden the gain of nine and a first down you know a good point by Tony hunt on a couple of levels and he knows he made a real good move to avoid Maurice crumb then outran Mike Richardson but most importantly got out of bounds to preserve you know some time box shows 252 as its restarted [Applause] a first down [Applause] wide open flags are down interference against another day if there's such a thing as a good penalty it is 1 because Dion Butler was wide open right off of the ball thrown under thrown to the end but that's when that strong armor Morelli had he been able to lay it out there that was a touch well you know Dan Butler said that hey you can't outrun his arm first down Don Lambert the pass interference there were three iris around the football Dion Butler just a little stop and go right by Lambert number 20 actually you know ended up being a relatively smart penalty by Lambert yep there it is clearly before the ball got there so at the 49 yard line approaching two and a half minutes they have a first down [Applause] Williams again from the shotgun made a cutback got it into Irish territory down to the 48 yard line once again Anthony Marilia lined up way down the bottom of the screen is a wide receiver Derrick Williams taking the direct snap of it several precious seconds tick off before they decide to take their first timeout timeout Penn State stops the clock at the 219 mark in the first half penn state driving trailing the irish 13 nothing closing stages of the first half from Notre Dame Notre Dame football is brought to you by Chase to apply for a Notre Dame credit card with blink from Chase called eight seven seven four nine blink you always know it's a big game and you see that big blip come sailing over the horizon [Applause] good year Morelli on second down screen pass wide open cuts using his blockers nice still on his feet 20 but down inside the 15 are down the 25 close to the 20-yard line a 26-yard gain on the screen pass to Tony Huns terrific call late flag there to Tom on you can tell with a body language that's going to be against Penn State and we'll bring it back day you know perfect call against an all-out blitz and that's what Notre Dame had a little screen and Tony hunt all 230 pounds of them aq simply commits Penn State's first penalty of the game but it'll go in the column as another Nittany Lion miscue that nullifies a big play just you know all the real state now there there's two clip right there Derek Landry didn't even go down and English people is heading fruit it's a clean [Applause] second and 14 Morelli in the shotgun here's the pressure diving attempt made and incomplete intended for Deon Butler but there's a perfect example of what pressure does you know you just mentioned under pressure he talks about sacks so much but Victor Evy Amiri while he didn't sack them was in his face had no chance to get that ball downfield because he had a receiver open but the rush by Victor at the Amiri prevented him from get the ball toe [Applause] team [Applause] no early steps up behind and fights on the play by a bmary on the Victor Abby Mary you know he's a good really good pass rusher a year ago he's hurt most of the first part of the season came on to second half the year to get eight sacks and a good physical hustle play by Victor at the Amiri make notre dame's going to use one of their timeouts they will use their second timeout stops the clock with a minute and a half remaining Penn State had the long game threatening the Notre Dame goal and then the penalty wiped that out and then the sack by Xavier miri it'll be fourth down 90 seconds left in the first half and coming up at halftime the Toyota halftime show we've got the NFL gang out to work today Bob Costas Chris Collinsworth Jerome Bettis sterling sharp in our New York studio Chris spent some time with Peyton and Eli Manning to find out how they're getting ready for the big game tomorrow night they'll also have college football scores and highlights coming up on the Toyota halftime show Jersey today Notre Dame campus last time Notre Dame and Penn State met we made the Irish to win that's cappadocia in punt formation city Kowski is deep [Applause] I snap capitals pulls it down by civic ask again a dangerous move but he gets away with at that time he fumbled the first one a 32-yard punt with no return in penn state they can go to the locker room patton points the fact they're moving the football they're averaging five and a half yards of play but have not scored a point in this first half in Brady Quinn has plenty of time with a minute and 20 and still a timeout remaining to get his team in scoring position buck started the course with that change of possession new word this season was lesbian holding on for dear life that was a battle between behemoths you know and it's really hard on an internal clock for a quarterback to hold the ball that long tom but it was just a three-man rush and Brady Quinn had a patience and patience a patient and just to hang in there until he finally found that behemoth Carlson 6 6 256 pounds buzz Leslie 6-2 238 Carlson almost has a hundred yards and receptions in the first half we messed it up with the line back real close lesney and walker races for the sideline it gets out of bounds after a short gain of only four yards but he didn't able was able to stop the clock with block on the outside by chase anestachio their number three receiver today [Applause] as Lesley and here's the left tackle for Brady Flynn boy - he stuffs Jim Shaw that time to allow Brady Quinn to get that ball on the left flat watch the left foot of your screen number 68 Brian Harris just absolutely Fort Jim Shaw and that allows that Brady Quinn right over the top of them good throwing lane there to Darius Walker 56 seconds on the clock first down Nittany Lion 38 yard line [Applause] to the 20-yard line Tony Davis thingit's the Irish have an 18-yard gain and a first down deep the Nittany Lion turret yeah they're not getting anywhere close to Brady Quinn now 45 in County pass rush knock put enough heat on Quinn at this moment [Applause] dan evades the rush so here's Brady Quinn tucks it under guys inside the ten first there on Irish boxtops as they reset the change at 30 seconds between his arm his mine and his legs maybe did last week against Georgia Tech at the quarterback draw for the winning score [Applause] still have a timeout left [Applause] at all four of his past attempts on this drive [Applause] 12 seconds showing jhope ah Nittany Lions sideline the Nittany Lions as we said averaging over five and a half yards per play from scrimmage but it's been the big mistakes yeah that have been their undoing Notre Dame has taken its final time out of the first half and charlie weis takes a look at that laminated play sheet will give the call to his quarterback we'll see what it is will he return to Notre Dame Stadium 13 nothing game with 12 seconds left in the first half today's aerial coverage brought to you by Goodyear bringing innovative technology to you Brady Quinn has said eight of his last nine passes for four four on this drive second down from the Penn State 10-yard line last week of the situation a touchdown with his team inside linebackers they were watching for that so he's gonna go to [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] petition for another year and catches his first touchdown pass of the season and Tom how about the past projection for Brady Quinn Mississippi and Alabama yeah is extra point attempt is down the center and McKnight's with the touchdown reception and Brady Quinn seconds the aerial touchdown of the game and you know right before this play watch Raven McKnight kind of shaken his hand rubbing his hands get oh boy throw it to me I've got it I'm gonna be open I know the call I'm gonna get the back the endzone just give me a chance coach and they call his number right in the back of the end zone eyes three guys on Samardzija zero guys on McKnight that leads to a touchdown yeah they just turned him loose and they got no help whatsoever and Brady Quinn has got five walkers caught five McKnight four including a touchdown in Samara four including a TV you know to tight ends of cata passes a pack of two wide receivers we're really mixing it up that's why you know they're hard to defend they have a lot of different people they can turn to when things aren't going well or even when they are going well thank you all right now seconds left the only redeeming dingus but Penn State gets the ball to open the second half Tom they're gonna have to muster a drive to get back in this thing defense they showed on the second-hand for last week and they need Penn State in this first end the much-maligned defense at least preseason [Applause] the squib kick the first half to oppose joe parr the Nittany Lion made some critical mistakes and then Brady Quinn and the Irish offense got it cranked up in the second quarter and the Irish dominating as they leave the field after the first two quarters of play leading Penn State 20 to nothing let's go to Lewis coach with 12 seconds left to go you call the timeout what were you looking for well we had our favorite play that we wanted to call to our best to receivers we feared is going to be one of the two yeah so far so good you know we obviously got 30 minutes left but they're playing solid and haven't given up the big play and that's one of the reason why there's no points on the board all right coach thank we'll see the second half Tom all right Louis Brady Quinn hit nine of his last ten passes he found McKnight for a touchdown just before half-time to make it 20 to nothing now stay tuned for the Toyota halftime show with our football night in America crew Bob Chris Jerome and sterling they'll have a look at the Mannings and college football scores and highlights that's all coming up right after these messages and a word from your local NBC station getting ready for the second half Notre Dame leading Penn State 20 to nothing and a few moments ago Lewis Johnson caught up with Joe Paterno coach you had several of miscues in the first half that left you with no points what happened there what are your adjustments mistakes we didn't play very well the first is that we get tired possession we gotta get the ball make a drive keep it so our defenses and I'm gonna feel the whole game what about the noise it is awfully loud here how much trouble is that from early in the line we've done a pretty good job moving the football which is inconsistent all right coach thank you pretty well summed up by 79 year old Joe Pau heading to the third quarter here they have moved the football but have made key mistakes Mitch being tired they know that ain't possessed it for 19 minutes laborer the Irish mob a rink is set to kick it off to Williams and Wallace made a big special teams place playing a spark the offense and his drive to get back in Derrick Williams capable of giving them one but this kickoff married by Rekha still be no return maybe quarterback gets tested anthem rally is right now look at those first half's have time of possession look at that almost 19 minutes there from Notre Dame and then 45 plays doubled them up and in that category really you know they're really possessed a ball as they did last week against Georgia Tech when they were in 26 more plays than the Yellow Jackets and everyone talking about the new rules are going to limit the place somewhat of the offense not so for Charlie Weis and Irish in the first six quarters of the season first they need to get something going here on the first drive with a half it's a handoff to hunt lion tailback rips off about eight yards on this first carry of a half more eise from junior with the tackle for Notre Dame that's a good place to start is Tony hunt but a pretty good first half for the Nittany Lions and here they're gonna try to up the tempo as Notre Dame did the start by going to the no-huddle offense play-action fake Morelli hangs it up Williams couldn't get it incomplete I ain't going right through his hands Lambert was there with him but Williams clearly had a shot at the football and could not hang on perfect throw by Anthony Morelli beating Lambert right to his hands right through his hips wow it's been the kind of day it's been for the Nittany Lions don't let him hold your newborn near Williams to the sidelines second down I see the third down [Applause] Thomas the converted tail the mole from Morelli and the ever-present the ubiquitous two times in Bukowski calls it in for the score [Applause] [Music] the third period here brings it in running kind of a poor decision here by morale he should have just kept it trying to pitch it way way to like to get sandwiched between from and Thomas and there as if a cows eating scores four times last year Tom twice's the defender twice as a punt returner gets his first touchdown of the year in fact his sixth career touchdown cut where Terry interception return fumble return Joe is extra points so rioting strikes early for the Mary Morelli's fumble scooped up by a zipper Kowski as if a cow's key knocked his opponent out in 49 seconds in his boxing match this summer didn't take him too long here to open the third quarter and Maurice from senior he'll be happy to see junior put his hand rot on the football to help knock it loose Anthony Morelli on the phone - Galen Hall as offensive coordinator they ran the option on third and short Maurice Crum and Travis Thomas forced the fumble in zip Mackowski took it in for the touchdown remember the play before Derrick Williams drop for sure first down as a big the rankest kicked off filled with my Derrick Williams deep in the end zone again he won't come out with us and Morelli will get another chance from the 20-yard line well has been a long day for Joe Paterno and his Nittany Lions down by 27 points and [Applause] filled world attempt an exhibit Kowski causes a fumble Tony hunt and another clipping family night indeed was a penalty really but they called it brought back that big play and then just a moment ago returned by Zoo Bukowski for a touchdown in the 27 nothing lead [Applause] play action think by me Larry chased from the pocket he steps up and delivers a hit so strike tomorrow still on his feet racing to the 45-yard line in the irish we're in duke play finally tracks him down 34 yard gain - jordan norwood really well in the Orange Bowl last January six catches over 100 over a hundred yards seven catches last week probably their surest hand play hand off to hunt his Penn State sticks from the no-huddle and he gets nothing back to the line of scrimmage where he's stuffed by Crum Maurice promise of a presence there in the middle now at me wolf from outside linebacker a year ago on the experienced linebacker and Charlie wife said we need to move you in the middle because gonna be involved in more plays and he's responded second down Morelli from the shotgun but he threw it right to Richardson of Notre Dame who was in front of Norwood I don't know what he read there but Richardson was clearly and in his past thought he might catch him on an angle but great coverage by Mike Richardson had a couple of good tackles earlier in the game as well big third down a young quarterback gets tested this is a tough test in Notre Dame Stadium down by 27 but faced in the third and team you've got to pick up the first year and say we went to the huddle all-time great wide receiver set in the shotgun [Applause] Morelli drills at 10:00 completes and for Williams and just now the flag comes in it could be on Lambert which would be his second interference call of the day the Derrick Williams is a guy they've got to continue to try to get the while he know he missed that last pitch you know series defense number 20 the spot [Music] fifth defensive [Music] barelli's a happy guy so Lambert the junior from Oxnard California called twice for Anna Faris's Morales throw nearly picked off an attendant for Chris Bell and Duke play had the coverage and wouldn't was there too well you know Charlie Weis was talking us about how well in do play is moving around in the defensive backfield lost 20 pounds in the offseason extra-lean jackal I picked own name has gotten Koons into the game and the defensive line sophomore from Indianapolis [Music] [Applause] and you know Tom I think it's for the Irish state when we talk about defense and depth and Pat Coons gives them some of that you know they have to really be happy with the way this Notre Dame defensive played today in that second half of the Georgia Tech game last week with a pitch to show [Applause] we're always Rosa screen hunts didn't get much blocking short gain in the plays he's driven out of bounds like Victor Abby Amiri got hailed on that one trying to get the bowl the Tony hunt has been a pretty effective receiver watched right down here tell me to yes I'd say third down and 12 he steps up he's gonna run with it Malay will have his first down and more hammered at the 10-yard line but he takes it down into scoring territory before chroman and du Quai chase him down that's a 28 yard gain on the scramble by Anthony Morelli you know Anthony Borelli has played pretty well you know his team has not scored he's up at the ball well he was 8 of 13 his head too drops his head some miscues teammates [Applause] Robinson but a nice run there by Anthony lays it up for Butler well covered by wooden and completes it'll be second down they can make a first down it's at the 11-yard line via Butler I think is an interesting story a guy that really came to Penn State as a walk-on even though it had phenomenal high school career in Virginia and then they made the freshman all-american team last week last year short drop they're all he's pass deflected incomplete def by Norwood in case it was a backward pass but it is incomplete and du Quai who's played very well tip that ball that that play had a chance for some good which passed the slot receiver my lord at the floor the student body last night at the [Applause] got the towels the green towels rolled into their students Morelli for the end zone Derrick Williams that was he he was open that one was underthrown by Anthony yeah I was right on the turf and he just couldn't come up with it right on the break you see how open he is behind him easy touchdown down 27 going for three time I go to the end zone a little surprised here fourth down and ten instead they'll try it 28 yard field goal just to get on the board Kevin Kelly and the left-footer beats it through the uprights for the first points of the day for the Nittany Lions but a bittersweet field goal as they settle for the three points and with 1129 left in the third still down big 27 three beautiful shots from the Goodyear blimp high above Notre Dame Stadium sold out for the 186 consecutive time as we take a look at our Lincoln scoring drive 28 yard field goal the first one of the game for the Nittany Lions 10 plays 69 yards but we said they had to settle for three he could have been seven with the to Williams well these vaunted Penn State linebackers are gonna have some work to do the rest of this game down Western laws that heat warm for the Irish at the mall West to the 25-yard line George West the freshman from Spencer Oklahoma and the tackle is by Jo see on Co lo yeah Brady Quinn is really gonna spread the ball around a lot of tight ends and caught the ball John Carlson with five as you see running back Darius Walker also with five then Nick Knight and some marzu eight between those two again just really moving the ball around throwing the ball deep you're throwing it's short even the tight ends caught that long pass 32-yard one over the Samarra and motion first down toss to Walker swap gave him a block let the Penn State defense able to string it out to the sidelines and prevent a big game Tony Davis bumped Walker out of bounds there is Walker never productive first half or balls for 4 yards ran for about 40 yards as well just an all-around good first half for him quietly he does plate every play too didn't he [Applause] setting up here on second down Penn State's showing blitz Walker picking his way forward calls across the 30-yard line only got a yarder to bring up a third down for the Irish number 40 Dean Connor place what they call their Fritz linebacker used to deliver pizza to the team in the 1950s Ritz somebody in rip angle had been named the other linebacker hero he didn't want to name one monster he thought that was a bad connotation to name him hero [Music] [Applause] on target - McKnight McKnight shakes one man but knock down at the 40-yard line Jim Shaw hit him hard enough tonight into the turf date our game and an Irish first down how about the hustle with Jim Shaw let's go to the bad angle he just at the beginning this play he was rushing the passer then we make the Nick McKnight on just a little quick out and then number 99 on the hustle play that's got to be encouraging for Joe Paterno a guy that what more even sure he's gonna be able to play quit on first down [Applause] Johnson the safety comes on a blitz and sacks Brady Quinn for a loss of seven ingredients turn the ball over every time you seen quarterbacks with a backside he had sacked and coughed the ball up he's strong I guess he steals it he senses it then he protects the football sorry a smart play by Brady Quinn nice blitz by Johnson a guy who's done just about everything in his career has been through losing seasons in the last year the winning seasons been about four different position changes senior from Cincinnati second down in 17 after his sack after Panama came he will be taken down for a loss at Johnson this time and tomorrow don't miss a special Meet the Press Tim Russert sits down with Vice President Dick Cheney for the first time in three years a live exclusive interview Dick Cheney in an interview you won't want to miss tomorrow morning on Meet the Press check your local listings well Jon Latina the offensive line coach was upset in the first half he's gonna be upset after that last series I promise you we have two straight sacks alas room for a loss of a lemon makes it third down and 28 when you call here Tom [Applause] - Daria's Walker after faking that Martha so so good defensive serious you know they got on the board Penn State on the board with a field goal and then a good defensive series forcing the punic was is this only the second punt I think by the Irish today defensive series it was Sean Lee that made another tackle yeah so now Derek Williams the superb punt returner for Penn State gets a chance to get his team very good field position well he dropped a couple of long Gators possibly and he has a chance to make up for here with the big special teams play jeff preiss will boot his way fifteen and it's a soaring punt Williams gives it back at the 13 yard special teams play by Lambert's pasta 60 yard punt and only four yards on the return as the Irish special teams player swarmed all over him but tight Terrell Lambo was down there all by himself look at number 20 make this open field tackle against a pretty dynamic player in Derrick Williams that's a heck of a special teams play by Thoreau Lambert 27:3 no today let's take a look now at our Liberty Mutual legends of the game and our Legend this week is Angelo Bertelli notice the Springfield rifle the first of seven Heisman Trophy winners for a Notre Dame took home the award in 1943 in his record over two and a half seasons 21 2 & 3 leaving in midseason a 43 for food campus winners and have an eighth phone game next year who's playin is there that last part by price by the way officially 62 yards his longest of the season there's no le or the play-action fake going up top on first down [Applause] [Music] there's an in doing the Duke way the one-way model after he lost the 20 pounds and he is moving [Music] [Applause] they've never had a chance of a punch it's gonna cool it straight up in the air and I know he was just trying to let his wide receiver out jump a guy but when you see a free safety there does in duplayee just you can't throw it there he had dead aim on it for five seconds [Applause] turnover as marelli is picked off by in duke way they didn't have any cream turnovers last week three thus far if my memory serves me correctly good first an Irish thrown 45 yard line already leading 27 3 3 tight end formation various his blockers to get seven yards on first down but using his blockers and Cortez the 78 John Sullivan the centers had another nice game and as we talked it Charlie Weis yesterday and he was talking about the offensive performance last week against Georgia Tech you mentioned two guys John Sullivan and Darius Walker for Sullivan really was through the two key blocks but Brady Quinn through in a scored on the quarterback draw and then late in the quarterback sneak it was Sullivan who threw the key ones and of course Walker did it in front of the home folks he is from Lawrenceville Georgia head he said 25 tickets for the game but he could will have at least twice that winner in that short hop sooner did he make the catch incomplete sometimes you forget how good athletes these big guys are but John Sullivan mentioned his hometown in Connecticut and he played high school rugby water polo through the javelin was a high school wrestler did just about everything just a big ol athlete that misfire by Quinn and his first Miss in his last eight attempts for the day he's 20 of 29 for 237 yards [Applause] as they chose blitz gran has it tipped incomplete intended for McKnight bearish begin a game planned around Paul pose loves me pretty well women we called his name much as good as Paul is that one yes he did nice timing by it so Derrick Williams is deep on fourth down jeff preiss that 62 yarder last time we'll put it away 44 yards Travis Thomas when he plays offense defense I should say defense office and now specialties he's the captain of the special teams of all saying the coaching staff Ryan Foley and who's the special teams coach really saw something as he was watching tape and found a little hole in that defense on fourth down perfectly call John Carlson gets a nice block and in the former more time ready back put on a great low there toward the end and no today was forced to call a timeout still celebrating the fake pot I think and calling a timeout who is 602 on the clock as charlie weis goes to the fake punt pouring it on the Nittany Lions the longest run of the career of Travis Thomas has the Irish in scoring territory Travis Thomas the senior from Washington Pennsylvania with a big play on the fake punt well let's have another look at Travis Thomas there's an awfully well-designed punt he's the up back there but you know watch this big ol Lane that comes wide open for him which really allows him watch break there I mean there's just a giant gap there for him to pick up the first down nearly the touchdown so Brian Poli in the special teams coach did a great job ask Audi and then they executed him this looks like the Notre Dame team of last year doesn't it last week was a hiccup form offensively well give me Georgia Tech you a credit to first and goal at the 4 yard line and Irish Darius Walker they stand him up just short of the goal line as Leslie was the first to hit him it will be inside the 1 yard line second and goal Travis Thomas does so many things well he's coming in now as a running back as you see in the short yardage but started the game on defense and I ran out the clock last week you see on last week against Georgia Tech four tackles and then seven special teams played played over 24 minutes I'm just guessing we let him store after that why not [Applause] really good linebackers say no not on my watch yes you can fool Paul + Lesley yeah + lestine he ain't connor was new to the academic all-american as well as an all-american really a terrific play [Applause] you know playing linebacker at Notre Dame as the loo is a functional equivalent of playing - each line backer Penn State a function of playing quarterback over the buckets and bid narc winner from a year ago [Applause] take it to Thomas [Music] [Applause] the later to hot 10 begin to John policy they look for Karlsson early and then been trying to get it squeeze it in there - Jeff Samardzija just a little too high in - hot dog - the first read was Carlson there's a label he wasn't there and then down to drill it to some Martians right it's samartha couldn't hang on play calling is 20 mice there - four - on fourth down so far today [Applause] Samar's yoga motion man [Applause] Tristan king came hard [Applause] driving and break the plane of the go align Travis Thomas who set it up on the fake punts takes it across to the school doghouse for fumbling he got a new start last year with Charlie Weis back against us see when he really controlled the clock then he played special teams and now he's doing it all to the Irish the perseverance Travis Thomas Julia's extra point is good in the spring charlie weis called him in and said we need speed on defense would you switch to defense he had to think over for a little while but then he said yes I will now he does everything and you know what he say to us last year he said I'm not afraid of contact and you just saw an example of that it's a delightful young guy we got a chance to talk to this week a second chance [Music] thirty four three Travis Thomas with the fake punts and then the touchdown he's just done a little bit of everything throughout this game [Applause] tell Travis Thomas forces the fumble there the tum Zipit Kowski returns for the touchdown that's a pole and they coach Weiss's here here's your bowl but watch out physical at the end of that run is it right over King for the touchdown being made a tough hit two in lost his helmet in the process is Thomas [Music] the score eight plays 55 yards two and a half minutes [Applause] AJ Wallace [Applause] again good special teams coverage by the Irish stopped short of the 20 yard line with another day a special teams that was Steve Quinn well Travis Thomas as Charlie Weis said he's created a monster I was Thomas's my created two-way monster and he will play both sides of the ball he will play on offense still play on defense and he'll play on special teams you know I came to another game to gonna be remembered as someone someone special to make my mark so to be known as well he is making his mark this year last year kind of plates of special teams in some offense before he's made a difference of his defense you know even though three points thus far to Penn State shut out the second half they are faster he's a part of it he's an interesting guy you know Washington Pennsylvania [Applause] picks up the first down with a toss to brown faretta his first catch of the season is junior from Altoona talking about Travis town was just finishing the story there Tom a guy that senior captain senior class president as well president's freshman and sophomore here every year but one on the student council sprinter on the track team state champion football team at Washington High School these two year season [Applause] first down Penn State the Blitz and they counter with the screen and it results in a game to the 45-yard line a penn state first down 15 yards three or four pretty good screen but ticket once a big bag in the open Morelli wings it out incomplete for bill clock shows 308 in the third and notre dame up big talks about aunty barelli's arm strength and they first saw to it was 10 he was in one of those punt pass and kick contest at Three Rivers Stadium he wanted yeah threw the ball 50 yards slide again this is Morelli [Applause] Williams takes the snap from center he's gonna pass bounds in Duke way blasted him what a game in Duke way has had Brady Quinn's roommate those two guys be able to celebrate tonight back to the house it's usually quiet over has really come up big today and just puts the hammer on Derrick Williams Wow all the pundits who were dissing the Notre Dame defense before the season tomczykowski took it personally thirteen points total thus far this season [Applause] at the 31 Morelli rifles compete in another tough hit from zoo Mackowski as Norwood makes the catch and pays the price 16 yard game you see what his opponent went down in 49 seconds it's just me Ashley clobbers people done he blogs do Bukowski with a running start on Norwood the caste no sir is boxing in normal point guard on the state championship basketball team in state college was on the George Mason final 14 a year ago first [Applause] the basketball for here's Morelli with tough defense and no flying [Applause] well the defensive smell in an hour thing they are inspired [Applause] [Music] defensive games in a row to the Irish and great coverage that time by Ambrose wood and we remind you of tomorrow night the Manning Bowl Eli vs. Peyton go ahead to hit the first time in the NFL Peyton and Eli Sunday Night Football tomorrow night 7:00 Eastern 4:00 Pacific here on NBC Tom you forget about how good his dad was arch I mean I don't forget no he was a heck of a boy himself tossed a walker slot blocking didn't get his block also the play in the penetration by Jerome Hayes a backup linebacker redshirt freshman another good linebacker for Penn State an injury or injured Irishman down it is a saw swap we sophomore fall back the unselfish big freshman year last year Trump was trying to get a block on the sweep toss to Walker unable to get his block and injured in the process [Applause] limp off the field his coach charlie weis told us the last season when he was playing starting as a freshman he's all day tough can imagine is his first year first start coming against USC which it did held his own lead blocker sort of whiffed on his way there here sets up a second down and 16 for the Irish Walker running back Brady Quinn to walk around on the backfield and garius [Applause] not until he picks up a first down crossing that yellow line what a nice little change of pace time worried about the send Mimi's big tall physical wide-receivers then you get the guy was under six feet five ten just a little dump pass to his back in the backfield in dirt he knows what to do with it gain of 18 yards our first and 10 line brought to you by Xerox [Applause] Samar's oh yeah they call it there there look fly they it's going around in college football with Notre Dame average to about ten yards per play on what they call look oftentimes just a I hand signal and I link between Brady Quinn and Jeff Samardzija Penn State has done a pretty good job of taking that particular play away today call play to me rather than in the improvisation right the tossing twist is owned by strano Venus 16 yards big fellow is having a good day on the receiving end of me bring the third quarter to a close six catches for Paulson 97 yards at that guy's qualify is a big day Tom he only had seven receptions all of last season and so the third quarter comes to a close with Notre Dame leading Penn State 34 to three and we'll return to Notre Dame Stadium after these messages from your local NBC station you're watching northern football presented by Vantage ya Tom doctors the train has been several minutes looking at his left knee now they are putting a brace on it and a pad putting his shoes back on I have no direct were bit looks low he maybe tried to come back in we'll see tell me - I would think at this point 34 3 the count here in Notre Dame as we strike the fourth quarter we'll have a third and two from the Nittany Lion 27 yard line Randall itas to Walker Darius stacked up at marker just short of the first down how about a Brady Quinn quarterback sneak down Phil we said earlier Brady Quinn yes six four and two hundred and thirty-some pounds been hard to stop on the quarterback sneak in fact he's never four big one last week they're gonna call timeout for a measurement here and Quinn takes the opportunity to come to the sideline here's the measurement Notre Dame dominating after the first quarter at least and just short as you called it the first down up and walking on the sidelines last year they kind of went a lot of empty backfield I ran a quarterback sneak last week though they had swamped in the backfield they ran a quarterback sneak here's Ashley McConnell the backup pull back on 6-foot 239 pounds senior from Adairsville Georgia we just mentioned four or four so far in his sore the last two years as under Chara and quarterback sneaks McConnell the full-back and Walker the tailback Walker now goes in motion much good enough change of base I think everybody was expecting Brady Quinn to sneak it inside stuntin Ashley McConnell only the second carry of his Notre Dame career he's a senior this was playing an old three-year-old four but in three games last year and had one carry over Allstate fullback and linebacker at Adairsville high school in Georgia well you know with the injury to swamp the Oh charlie watch this guy's scope goes into a different gears got a one back set using you know three wide outs and one tight end you'll see some too tight in and maybe even some free tighter in formations out of him [Applause] [Music] yard-line Leslie after a gain of nine and a good walk by Raymond McKnight the other receiver yeah Raymond McVeigh guy called for a holding penalty in a similar play last week right there just blocks down on Donnie Johnson and then just some Oranje can to turn it you know a two-yard gain or three yard pass into about 12 yards with this nice move on Lydell sergeant for four on fourth down today Pat you know Africa was four for four on fourth down last week against Penn State Walker side slammed to the turf by Chris Baker [Applause] [Music] that was the trend in the first half and it's continued even more so here in the second half two punts inverted some turnovers I mean it's just been an all-round performance by the Aires first and from the 13 Walker tripped up in the backfield that'll be a loss on the play penetration by the Penn State defense and Chris Baker again in on the play more than it Neal iins plays in a row there by Chris Baker against the penetration today when you've had to play that many plays you need to be fresh and get some penetration no Joe Paterno we talked to him yesterday Pat he said well we're young we haven't really been tested this will be a big test for us but we'll have to improve our play a lot to hang with Notre Dame we off that was the typical of Joe Paterno line but fairly prophetic big mistakes today have they're cones I think he believes though this team is going to be a pretty good team I think he does too it just [Applause] different procedure the two big wide receivers and then Darius Walker is not only a good receiver Tom but really a butcher's green runner I'm talking about patients that you need patience to be a good screen runner in the celebration in the endzone for Darius Marder took it in 15 yards and Joya nails the extra points [Applause] [Music] after a narrow escape against Georgia Tech looking good today offense defense even the special teams good block downfield by chased Anastasio the wide receiver who got the last attacker that could have gotten in the way of Darius Walker and Brady Quinn has hit his last five passes another touchdown in the books for Brady it's 41 3-legged Notre Dame Stadium we invite you to stay tuned for the Vaughn Age Notre Dame postgame reports be seen on these NBC stations and then on the web as well for your press conferences all sorts of highlights as well and the monitor dame postgame report as we looked at the Touchdown Jesus just over the and the zipper Kowski cut pick off AJ Ellis from the go-live but can't quite get free stop to the 10-yard line gray herring long specialties attorney Weiss has to be awfully happy with the special teams as well Tama well this is the tenth possession for Penn State their average start was their own 21 their best start their own birdie so the field position battle has gone to Notre Dame as well the Irish meantime has scored four touchdowns their last five possessions in Penn State second half missed cues and some of the first drive as well fumbles penalties interceptions Bunch with a hand to rob bake in law in law the backup tailback gain on first down Chris from the tackle we're talking even Paul about Keeneland what what about what about Oh rivals that this guy is exceptionally fast this is not the old plodding Penn State team that a lot of people think of the last two years they've really gotten young and very athletic [Applause] Anthony no it's his man Chris Bell he's a freshman from Norfolk Virginia wooden chases him out of bounds looks like he has the first down Michigan beats Central Michigan today 41 17 and the Wolverines will be in here at another Dame Stadium next week that should be a good way this highly height as we said the heart the highest requests for tickets and over name ticket office has ever done it's been all Irish started slowly perhaps at first quarter but since then they have been pouring it on and all phases of the game Kinlaw stop like goons Brady Quinn afternoon 36 287 yards three touchdown passes spin these away from Richardson then gets close to the first down Richardson finally recovers to make the tackle but it's a first down for the Nittany Lions Jordan Norris Norwoods gonna have another good year I think for Penn State had a really a solid year last we talked the Orange Bowl the guy who just does not bobble the ball pitches everything's going his way Morelli has Williams 40 led by Ambrose wooden triple woz was out there in the tackle trip amaz plays defensive tackle and yet he was out all the way downfield 25 yards to help make that tack [Applause] thrown back crumb in do play first down Penn State man Charlie Weis has found some pretty good linebackers right move Maurice crumb inside and Travis Thomas looks like he's more than holding his own as an outside line he got good marks from the veteran defensive players for his rookie performance on defense a week ago nice catch by more wood as he took it off the turf in front of Richardson Maurice from right up the middle got into an tomorrow and really just hung in there shot and he did he knock him down for the first down course notre dame content to let them throw underneath all afternoon with what's remaining of its wooden bumps that receiver out of bounds it was peretta and anthony Morelli five four five on this drive so far le he has a big upside we talked about his arm strength his pocket presence [Applause] chugging his way forward for another Nittany Lion first down the series between Notre Dame and Penn State as we said they both started playing football in 1887 series tied eight wins apiece and one time first time they played since 1992 that was the snowball remember here when Brooks got a two-point conversion from Rick Myers for the deciding game in the snow screen pass shelled out by firm [Applause] that was the game on Notre Dame Penn State in 1992 where they filmed the football scenes of really at halftime the game Jerome Bettis scored to Brooks the point conversion great game Morelli with a lot of time overshoots darling the pride in well here is that game in 1992 pretty admire and Jerome Bettis the bus bust days yeah before the bus and then Brooks lays out to make this two-point conversion kits Joe Paterno in the Irish had the victory [Applause] out of bounds by in Duke ways the first step Taysom laundry on that throw watch to do right at you perfectly thrown ball out in front of the wide receiver peretta nothing to do when you're throwing it back quickly in that accurately there's just no chance to make up the gap ball at the 21 yard line first down for Penn State [Applause] lost it - Wallace AJ Wallace was become a two-way player now for the Nittany Lions - he's listed as a DB right a lot Travis Thomas had some nice gains in the first two games on offense full of a Nittany Lions I think auntie barelli's gonna develop into a pretty good quarterback this season certainly has a big-time warmth as we see [Applause] the interception to Kinlaw dancing his way to the free our line [Applause] Mike Richardson committed the touchdown still a gain of 13 yards the quickness of Rodney Kidman you got a power back and told me honey we saw him another week in LA certainly a change of pace [Applause] ray Harry came up from the secondary to put the hit and then in law crowd yeah we'll help the Murray scrum as well Harry was the first guy there kind of slowed him down in Murray scrum finished him off [Applause] [Music] you lost er didn't gain in experience he has the physical tools but an experience for the former Penn Hills high school star who is career past for 5,200 yards [Applause] defense comes into the Irish but your white house come in for Penn State [Applause] Morelli swing [Applause] in du Quai was there too and Richardson as well tackling by Ambrose Waldman and Mike Richards in the other corner it's a premier player yes [Applause] in the Fiesta Bowl the main defense they heard about it that's 600 yards charlie wife said he heard about it all offseason they took it personal the first two games of this season Thurston girls [Applause] nice pitch by buffer as Morelia with our frozen rope to the back of the endzone great throw a terrific catch by Deon Butler because that had some old fun they was traveling at least 40 miles an hour and faith took them all the way into the game to cut the right foot down did he yep just barely inside inside the white line just kind of hung in there there's the right foot yeah did he catch that white line I think he's inside very close I would be surprised if they look at that upstairs Anthony Morelli meanwhile Pat was 10 of 11 on that one of course grand a Scouter Dame was giving him the underneath stuff but he's got some upside he really does he's 21 a 33 right now 190 yards you know fire Charlie I just tried that you know the coaches challenge just a mad it's 41 has a penalty on the point after in the camera they're really blocks it a little bit you can't really tell if there's any white beneath his foot or not so given the circumstances I say play on Charlie agrees with you obviously [Applause] extra point is good by Kelly so Penn State gets a touchdown but it comes with 551 on the clock and Joe Pyne and the Nittany Lions facing a 4110 deficit beautiful shot of the Notre Dame campus the golden dome in the foreground Notre Dame Stadium our aerial shots courtesy of Goodyear bringing innovative technology to you believe me the bookstore a bit crowded oh wow the whole campus has been something to witness this weekend great Quinn gonna go home and shoot some pool with his teammate Sununu and du Quai relax a little bit yeah see how his mom took the game as mom Robin is his biggest critic didn't talk to him after last week's Georgia Tech game he's upset the way he played a lot of people threw him off the heisman bandwagon after the Georgia Tech game and I suspect he's back on well Evan sharply is getting the final word here he's gonna come in at quarterback for a Notre Dame and Charlie Weis telling us that he wouldn't have to change the game plan at all four sharply he does the same thing makes the same calls he worked for Brady Quinn [Applause] on the onside kick men stayed and that's a good one does bounce out of Bounce but they have shot at it I really look like Chris Bell the freshman receiver six-two had a shot but didn't get his paws up there and Jeremy Sisto Delroy Lindo Timothy Hutton Dana Delany star in NBC's new thriller - kidnaps suspect everything kidnap premieres Wednesday September 20th here on NBC there are boys wondering who's gonna be the number two quarterback even get a chance to see him even sharply and ready Quinn still helping him out with play calls Marshall Michigan didn't play last season although he was an infielder on the older Dame baseball team Marshall High School's Marshall Michigan all-stater and 50 touchdowns there's only a tenth Michigan player to do this [Applause] state of Michigan high school plan pitch to Munir Prince as the speedy freshman gets the chance but it loses a couple of yards Florissant Missouri did the speedster 510 184 pounds Ashley McConnell is also in a Blacko backfield for the Irish and continuing was sharply Pat not only was the baseball shortstop and pitcher as well and was the basketball guard his uncle you may remember Jim no mouse key played quarterback at Michigan State and in the NFL well you know he's a backup baseball player backup first baseman for Notre Dame's baseball [Applause] mr. prince nice cut on the backfield but can't get away better off the line of scrimmage Charlie wife said to us he hit this week or yesterday about Princeton if this guy ever gets in the open field no one's ever gonna catch me right compared him to Napoleon Kaufman the University of Washington back and he said I know I'm showing my age but there are many of that fast have been around he's you know interesting I originally committed to Iowa as a defensive back Charlie convincing becomes a Notre Dame as a running back and they think he has a an opportunity to really add some speed in a different dimension in the backfield third down here for Evan sharply sharply looking one way the other has to scramble types it under makes it back to the original line of scrimmage Chris Baker who wrapped him up so sharply tried to attempt his first pass but couldn't find anyone open and on fourth down the pup team will come out jeff preiss penn state uses a timeout stops the clock with three minutes 51 seconds Notre Dame on the way it'll have big victory over the Nittany Lions grady quit in the irish on their way to victory and we take a look at our chevrolet players of the game Tony hunt of Penn State and Brady Quinn of Notre Dame hunt rushing for a hundred yards today in recognition of their determination an outstanding play Chevrolet will make a $1,000 contribution to each University's general scholarship fund Chevy an American Revolution break Quinn plates smartly last week and played really very very well throwing the ball today three touchdowns no interceptions went even close Road Jeff price will punt the Anthony Scotto righto dodge the first man but not the second and third and Penn State will take over tile McCarthy first wind down on special teams and Notre Dame defense back out Joe Paterno through the years 41 years as a head coach Tom kinda the same look all of those 41 years from Joe yeah just just he's been a marvel the football player and outstanding scholar at Brown University still holds some of the Brown records 14 interceptions there Laurie first hooked up with ripping go scramble by Darrell Clark who's the backup quarterback by a Penn State a redshirt freshman from Youngstown Ohio in fact the Penn State will play Youngstown State next week Travis lightful the tackle first game with campus September 30th 1858 only missed two games told us one was the father his father's funeral died in winter his father's funeral when his son was sick on another one once when he was an assistant once when he was a head coach and it was interesting that Charlie Weis paid him a big compliment I said can you imagine all that's transpired in our society since he's been the head coach and still relating to youngsters and we asked him if the student athlete had changed and he said no not really he said little tougher for him in a lot of ways more distractions [Music] against Notre Dame you said they they want guidance they want a chance to do well and he also went a step further Pat saying that he thought college football had a greater effect on our society than almost anything you can name in a positive way teaching teamwork and teaching you know he was asked if 1982 after he won his first national championship this was his best team he said I don't know my best team will be the team that produces the most productive citizens you don't know that for 20 years so he's done a throwaway been a credit to his university and to his chosen profession in defensive back in brown as you look at the all-time winningest coaches in 1a in 1a that's right and of course he'll be back here to South Bend in December to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame with Bobby Bowden the Penn State Florida State and John Galliard II who is a one double-a all-time coach where he also played basketball where that he played quarterback and record on defense but played two years of basketball there at Brown and we asked about how he ended up at Brown he said you know it kind of went to all these Catholic schools as a youngster and Catholic Jesuit universities and cities looking for something a little bit different went to brown that switched his life was forever changed by plane trip angle majored in English Lit the city can remember in the thirties listening play on the radio Notre Dame Ohio State game when states fear Notre Dame to victory and he said well you know that's what got me interested in English Lit Shakespeare was still playing he's done it all you know just think about his work ethic - I know we talked to him Mike by Monday he had already watched tape of his last game I watched three motor game games getting ready for this one always still working on completes the pass to Norwood a nice throw by Darrell Clarke and once again huh Jordan or what sucks up the ball none the ball just can get bobbled [Music] approaching the final myth not only to touchdowns this year one today and one against Georgia Tech that one incomplete tax the effect of defense between that Tech game and today went 99 minutes and 44 seconds hundred minutes the theme their opponents touchdowns you know it doesn't get a whole lot easier for Joe Paterno's going to go to Ohio State a couple weeks right yeah Youngstown State next week and then some course Notre Dame who's gonna take the field against Michigan here next week BC at 3:30 to the sideline overshoots Chris Bell [Applause] and that's next Saturday 3:30 charlie weis in the Fighting Irish will meet the Wolverines of Michigan ranked 10th before today's games they beat Central Michigan and Leeds and the Irish in a tie for fourth for the impressive victory for them today against this Penn State team I think Charlie will vote his team this way from two to four take the hand off and parks gonna take off with it [Music] Ryan freshman getting some playing time employed by Darryl spark there's the shark Jeff Samardzija Martha six catches could be charged in a touchdown today balanced attack for the offense and a sterling performance by the defense and special teams and we're inside the final minutes barks pass knocked away by Darren walls number two the freshman that Charlie boy seems to be so western Pennsylvania players from Pittsburgh they got away from Penn State yeah intercepted 15 passes his first three years in high school didn't play much last year because of an injury but first three seasons had 15 picks the very first day of training camp he's been working situations hands of Andrew Corliss the freshmen tied in an absolute touch I mean you know they they really have had some missed cues Penn State they had some guys open that missed him once miss Derrick Williams once the end zone that time Wallace had four perfect role from Daryl Clark should have conifer touch well Joe Paterno said were young and untested under fire [Applause] so miss Q is under fire today [Applause] the quarterback still has it for the 5-yard line ray herring to the booze of the crowd Penn State takes a timeout with 25 seconds left charlie weis I think has to be more pleased with his defense than just about anything else Tom I mean you know you know Brady Quinn was gonna be productive this season right he had a big day again today and Terry's walking all those guys wide receivers but boy oh boy the defense is but how the offense was expected that's one of the reasons I guess that people were so critical of them last week because of expectations but here the defense with no expectations coming into the season or very few I should say has been really the strong point of this team in the first two games but today was really all-around hard to knock them on any phase of the game today as we see their upcoming schedule here next week against Michigan then they'll go to Michigan State and then Purdue Stanford and UCLA after a week off I saw UCLA in week one boy they look good big new quarterback Ben Olsen big left-hander but Brady Quinn and Georgia Tech a week [Applause] Clark scores the touchdown for Penn State a nice little drive by Darrell Clarke threw a ball that should have been caught for a touchdown and then kind of a powerful run on fourth down it was 224 pounds not just a little skinny guy that wasn't run all the way good block up front there by Kinlaw clears away for the quarterback Darryl Clark so the second touchdown of the game for the Nittany Lions both came late and 20 seconds showing on the clock his extra point he is good so the registered freshman Darryl Clark gets another Penn State touchdown and the 20 seconds remaining is 41 17 Irish 20 seconds left before Notre Dame goes to 2 and OH on the season Penn State will be 1 and 1 and we invite you to remain tuned for the bonnets Notre Dame postgame report will have it on these NBC stations and live on the web as well big afternoon for the Irish faithful and you can imagine that the expectations will intensify with Michigan coming to town next week even a smile from Charlie did you see that well they'll be still be sorry that we had it on camera get the last one they call no penalty down with a penalty flag down watch Charlie won't have him practicing against on-site kickstand living here something they needed something to hang his hat on this week go 10 yards it's likely the call big 10 officiating crew will huddle up illegal touching the kicking game touched the ball before it went 10 yards it'll be another game ball at that spot first down let's see there's five that's seven that's they're just shy folks he couldn't wait any longer Chris here said you know it's just hanging up just gotta get it [Applause] interesting victory today for the Irish says Joe Paterno heads to midfield [Applause] and a smile for charlie weis [Applause] Brady Quinn at a big day 25 a36 287 yards in three touchdowns leading Notre Dame to four touchdowns in five possessions in the second and third quarters to break the game open and let's go to Lewis with coach Weis all right Tom thanks a lot well coach what does this commanding win mean in a season of such big dreams well it meant that you know you came and you won your home opener which last year we didn't do and you know maybe look we learned something from last year's experience and now you know we got a big win against Michigan next week you know we've every week's a big game for us so that one's in I want those guys to enjoy tonight and tomorrow we'll come and watch the tape and get going towards Michigan how about the defense you must be awfully proud of the way they played I guess they're not a fluke after all you know I think you know except for those couple late scores you know they held them down and check and we got to do more of the same we know we know we got a tough task against the Michigan next one all right I know you were over to play the fight song time we'll throw it back up to you all right Louis we bring you the Notre Dame postgame reports and it begins with a new tradition folks Weis telling us that the team with helmets raised will go over to the student section and the band will play the Notre Dame alma mater this came about from last season remember against the Navy team with respect for Navy they went over while they played the Navy alma mater and a new tradition begun by coach twice in the Fighting Irish after every game win or lose they will salute the students with their golden domes and jointly sing the Notre Dame man still trying to get assembled roommates in Duke way and Brady Quinn embracing high school teammates now roommates came to Notre Dame camp in Duke ways father would drive them up to Notre Dame games first the victory march [Music] those license uncharged never present on the sideline not much for Charlie to criticize today young Charlie he normally does to his old man [Music] surely free she's at 1978 graduate of Notre Dame and the former Notre Dame students saluting the present voter name students which is such a big part you know they don't necessarily have football roommates stay to live among [Applause] the alma mater [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] the Notre Dame alma mater plays in the band and sung jointly by the football team and the students on our Vantage Notre Dame postgame report and let's go to Lewis Johnson with Brady Quinn all right Tom thanks a lot well you look a little different after this one more of a commanding win you look more relaxed after last we talked about the big day that you had Brady you know obviously offense came out did what we wanted to do out there today and we have some help from our defense they did a great job and of course you got to get the big guys up front a lot of credit cuz really they made it possible for us to do our job downfield go back to early in the game Carla's joy held you guys in it with a couple of big kicks you all looked a little bit rusty on offense what was happening there basically you know we let a couple mistakes here and there kind of trip us up but you know similar to the first game but obviously you know we correct those mistakes so we came out second quarter sort of make some plays defense was unbelievable what did you think as you were watching that on the sidelines I it's obviously important for us just to sit back and watch them kind of get our rest the state points on we have a lot of fun you know those guys were working hard and a lot of people gonna see they've proven they've made over the past year alright you won't be able to keep that smile for very long because Michigan's cover next week yeah well we watched a film on that's Anaya alright we'll throw it over to Jimmy with Thomson Bukowski alright thanks very much Louis Tom awful lot of discussion certainly in the offseason and leading up to this game about the defense how much did that you guys to really know the way the often there's big-time that's that's what the whole off season was all about you know and in spring just getting ready you know to come out and prove that we can play defense I think you know through the first two games we've proven it but we've just got to keep it going how much of a test was this by Joe Paterno's admission this was a young team a quarterback really getting his first start what do you think today you proved about yourselves anything that you really learned young team but they got a lot of speed at receivers and I think you know shutting them down and scoring on defense again turnovers I think you know just trying to prove a point to the country that we can play defense really we're just gonna ask you about that how big is that for you obviously when a defensive player gets to pick it up and go that must have been tremendous feeling yeah it's a big time feeling but you know the celebration in the end zone I mean when you see no 300 pound defense alarm and sprint down and try and give you a hug you know in the end zone that's good but that's what football is all about all right now I know you've talked about this this week you got your haircut and Thursday have you had it's to see how many kids they are actually running around this stadium with Mohawks I saw a couple of them on the walk over we'll see you'll see if it keeps going you are America's parents least favorite football player today Tom's a Bukowski nice game thank you very much and let's go back to Lois Johnson all right Tom I've got the three-headed monster here here's Travis Thomas Travis you remember the day when coach called you in and said I want you to play defense special teams what a difference is it now that you were able to be so successful it's definitely a difference now we're winning games and we're winning the good the games that people don't think we can win so I've always told coach you know I'm willing to do anything to get on the field make the team better and that's what I'm doing what do you love most awake what you're doing on office or being able to run a fake punt up the field what do you love most about all this I love everything about the game I love being a person who can make plays on all sides of the ball and that's something that coach so enabled me to do all right and now next week Michigan coming to town what do you think about them hey it's gonna be a challenge like always so we're gonna be ready for it all right congratulations on a big game today Tom all right Louis you're a fun killer talking about Michigan give him a chance to enjoy it as they
