when people from around the world hear the words Mexico City Street food the most common picture that pops into their head is probably tacos maybe it's al fast or carnitas or barbacoa while those are all delicious in their own right I'm here to tell you there is so much more variety on the Street food scene that has been left unexplored by visitors to this awesome city so today I bring you the beginner's guide to Mexico City Street food [Music] [Music] hey everyone my name is Ethan I've been in Mexico City for the past just under four weeks learning about exploring cooking and enjoying all the great food and mexico city has to offer today we're going to be trying at least eight different street foods of Mexico City from quesadillas to p'm Bosco's tortas chilaquiles we're gonna hit a big variety we're gonna start out in the morning for some breakfast options before navigating to lunch and then finally going to kind of the dinner and late-night scene primarily all in the Condesa and roma neighborhoods at Mexico City [Music] three important things before we hop into the eating one when I say Street food in this video I literally mean like food on the street it could be a stand a tent a little cart a is just a steamer full of tamales but no actual physical building so for example we're not gonna see any taquerias in this video maybe a different one but not in this video number two this is not an exhaustive guide to all or the best street food in Mexico City a video like that would be several hours long with you would literally have to live in Mexico City for your entire life and try countless different street foods my goal with this video is to open you up to some new Street food offerings in New Mexico City you know when coming down here or hearing about Mexico I feel like most people tacos goes right to the head and I mean rightfully so they're absolutely delicious don't get me wrong but there's so much more variety to Street foods and you can have some really delicious bites in fact just today I learned about a brand new street food that I had no idea existed before today so hopefully this video opens you up to some new dishes and I'll also try to give you the confidence to order them lastly the knowledge I'm sharing with you is based on the various experiences I've had in Mexico City for the past few weeks you know this includes a couple of different market tours I've taken a couple cooking classes as well as me just wandering around and enjoying countless amounts of street food after just four weeks obviously I'm not an expert on the topic but I do have a good grasp on the common street food offerings that being said if I do mix up some information or pronounce something wrong I'm definitely gonna pronounce something wrong don't worry Shalon gos feel free to correct me with all the administrative stuff out of the way though I think it is time to start the beginner's guide to Mexico City Street food hope you guys enjoyed [Music] morning everybody we are in Condesa on neocon Street right now about to head and find our first meal of the day which is going to be tamales I have my brother Pete with me he just got in like two days ago so he should be able to give you like a first impression since a lot of these foods he will be having for the first time as opposed to me who's had them you know several times in the past couple weeks so we're gonna go hunt down some tamales and we'll update you one over there [Music] all right everyone we have picked up the Semana lace so I didn't pick out this place ahead of time Tomales you can find really all over the city and what you're looking for is a big metal steamer and if there's a big metal pot or steamer usually tamales are inside so if you want to come over here we have the tamale Dolce so tamal is the singular form so this is Dolce it's sweet it's made with I believe strawberry I've actually not tried it so this is gonna be the first time actually opening this up this is definitely some kind of dried fruit maybe a date if anyone wants to help me out on this feel free but we're gonna try it in a second this one is the tamam Verde so this is made with salsa verde and then usually stuffed with some chicken all right I'd love to helicopter pass but this is tomorrow ha so it's a red salsa and then I'm not sure what meat is inside we will taste it in one second this is my first authentic tamale or tomorrow in the singular form I've made my own before but uh they probably weren't as good as what this is about to be looks like some chicken I think I love the texture I love a little bit of heat that it gives me it's amazing hi guys I'm getting in here to the so tasty I feel like the best part for me is like the texture it's like it's like super moist not cornbread but like a liquidy or corn I wouldn't know how you scrap its really really good though the masa is absolutely phenomenal and then the salsa a little bit of spicy but definitely not too much not overpowering super tasty hey cheers brother yeah first first up many street foods next up is the Tamala Verde this is actually one of my personal favorites I just like the kind of this sourness of salsa verde and then we've got little pieces of chicken in there - you're totally spot-on with the sourness mm-hmm do you like red or do you like green better I like them each for their own respective flavors I think yeah I agree at the red I think stands out to me more ya know I could see that I'm personally most dishes down here I usually like the bairdai version except for chilaquiles which we're gonna have in just a bit all right last try is the pink the the Dolce the sweet I've never had one of these interesting one that looks super interesting it certainly smells kind of like they had a disturb of some kind yeah it's really easily it's like syrupy and then dates I don't know these are some kind of like dates or raisin some kind of dried fruit mmm oh it's like a raisin Wow you know what that reminds me of reminds me of soggy pancakes that were like in syrup and it Taylor I'm really good right I totally agree that's really good though that's so good literally tastes like the best soggy pancakes you ever had I don't know about always start my morning with one of these but I'm really enjoying it right now dang and like I said you can go all over Mexico City and you'll find new street foods to taste all the time like I said I've been here for three or four weeks this is the first time I'm having this one and it's amazing that's super good and one thing that we learned in line actually was that sometimes they will put tamales in a tort or also in a bowl élow and they call it wahoo lota and the guy behind us all ordering is like oh you don't like wah hello then I was like I don't even know what that is and he's like yeah you put it inside the torture role and you eat it that way so like I said there's a million different Street food offerings every day is seriously like an adventure out here tamales are done hopefully you guys enjoyed let me know if you guys have a favorite tamale that you've had in Mexico or around the world anyway but I think I'm at Smollet Verde kind of guy and then these sweets are really really good I got everyone tamales art demolished now we're gonna go find one of a very popular sandwich over in Condesa it's actually a torta de chilaquiles similar to how we just learned about foie holiday where they put a tomb all in a torta roll they do the same thing with chilaquiles and I've had it before and it is absolutely delicious so we're gonna hunt you down and meet you guys [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] all right everyone so 45 minutes later we have the torta Chanakya and basically what these are is just a torte to roll and then they fill it in with chilaquiles you can get Rojo actually they only had Rojo today last time I was here they had both Verde and Rojo so I'm not sure why today was only Rojo they're both delicious and then you can choose different fillings in our case we ended up getting mill and ASA which is a cutlet and then I also added in some cochinita pibil which is a delicious Mexico meat that is originated from I think the Yucatan area let's get a little close-up of this sandwich so you can see here this is the coach you need to be Bill this is the millon a sets the cutlet right there we added in some Savoia escabeche pickled onions and then these are the chilaquiles and then obviously everything's got to have a lot of crema in it and the bread itself is like nice and it's like crusty and it's like soggy very delicious let's let's give this bike they make these so fast that you kind of need to redistribute the ingredients around a little bit make it a more cohesive sandwich but here we go guys birthday day chilaquiles it's such an interesting experience it's like crunchy on the outside soggy chilaquiles in the middle a little bit of freshness from the onion it's quite a unique sandwich quite delicious you got to pick one up if you are in Mexico City here we go my first tour today chilaquiles so similar to chilaquiles that uh we got yesterday morning my first meal Mexico City actually sloppy deliciousness right mom there's a lot going on the sandwich that's for sure kind of glad we ordered one because we're gonna need more food today and I think if we each have one of these that'd be quite a bit and I'm telling you this sandwich is so so tasty definitely one that I will be looking to recreate when I get back from Mexico City and like I said it will be a wait if you go to this specific location so this is in Condesa and I believe it's called la guerra you will see these or different places around the city though I went to Mercado Cuauhtemoc and they were selling these as well they're very delicious so definitely look to see if you can get one if you don't want the extra carbs of the actual you know the Boley low the roll you can actually just find chilaquiles around the city plenty of times normally it'll just be in a little Styrofoam cup and then they'll fill it up with the salsa over your fried tortilla chips maybe add a little bit of chicken or some queso fresco very delicious but that's gonna wrap it up for our breakfast portion of today like I said we've only hit tamales and we hit the torta de chilaquiles you're gonna find so many different breakfast options around the city you can just hit up some fresh juices you can hit up there's plenty of carts that just have baskets of fresh pastries and things of that nature there are places that will serve you Cafe con Leche so overall just kind of go out and see what you can find but I'm telling you you're never gonna go wrong with tamales and that tamales Dulce unbelievably shocked by how good that was I was not planning to like that at all and that is I'm definitely going to be get that in my remaining couple of weeks here that's gonna wrap it up for a breakfast portion we'll meet you guys back up when it is of lunchtime [Music] [Music] so our first lunch shop is just about two blocks over that way still in kind of the Condesa area before we get that I thought I'd cover some helpful like general guidelines for ordering food at these different street stands so the first one is gonna be do you want it for take-out or do you want to eat it here in this case if you want to eat it at the place they'll give you a little plastic plate if you want to take it out they will give it to you in either plastic bag or wrap it up in paper kind of depends on what you're ordering to order takeout after you have ordered and say you want like a quesadilla or something just say para llevar and then they will know to wrap it up for you so you can take it with you if you do want to eat there right at the stand I'm just say Farooqi and then they will know that to give you a plastic plate or whatever it is depending on what the food is and then obviously many Mexican foods have toppings on them a typical thing they will ask you is con todo and when you hear con todo that just means with everything do you want all the toppings on it you know salsa lettuce cheese and things of that nature when they ask you to just say cecum dodo I want everything on it if you know you don't want certain things like there's a certain saucer one don't be afraid to point things out and say you don't want this just say no quiero este there should be I don't want this or things of that nature when it comes time to pay just say la cuenta or cuanto la cuenta be in the check or quanto how much and then one thing that is very important to learn is actually the different numbers in Spanish I feel like that even if you don't know any Spanish it is very helpful to know the numbers D ace veinte treinta you know 10 20 30 and so on and so forth but outside of that hopefully this video gives you some names you can start putting you to these foods as you start seeing them and then just think about things like whether you want it here or if you want to take it out if you want it with the various toppings I mean you're never gonna go wrong with whatever topping variation you get that being said let's move over and go to our first step which you're going [Music] [Music] look at those it's not a bad spot to enjoy some quesadillas let's open these things up we ordered our quesadillas para llevar which means tank out they just wrapped it up and they gave us some salsa and I asked the guys so this is made with habanero so this one right here and this one is a chile de árbol salsa so both a little bit on the spicier side they also had more refet chilies which is a little bit smokier and a little bit mellower so don't be afraid to ask what types of chilies are in your salsas if you know you don't like things very spicy now we're gonna open up our package of quesadillas and just look at those so we got two quesadillas one with steak so this steak is kind of like I would kind of equate it to like a you know Philly cheesesteak very thinly sliced and fried up on the grill and then we got these with some potatoes and then no police which is cactus and then obviously it's melted with Oaxaca cheese and then for this one over here this is carne enchilada so it's basically just meat that is marinated in a chili sauce and again same toppings on both and we have the beautiful stretchy Oaxaca cheese that beautiful string pull like this is what you want in some Waka teas absolutely delicious I think it's time to taste this so we're gonna hit it with a little bit of salsa at first bite in ready to go so really good and tasty there's so much going on in here with like the meat is nice and charred up a little bit it's a little spicy from the salsa de arbol we've got these um nopales which are really nice I love getting cactus on either tacos or quesadillas of these things absolutely delicious you definitely got it to get yourself a quesadilla I mean these are kind of just like big tacos the main difference being you know it's a big oval tortilla and they are crisp up a little bit on the kemal and then obviously the big distinction is that in a quesadilla there's pretty much always going to be cheese it means this is essential I don't happen you got enough for me because you do I don't mixing those up but it's definitely the best custody I've ever happened also a little pro tip for you guys about salsas so if you ever see salsas you know for tacos or out at a restaurant they'll obviously give you a bunch of different varieties just make sure you you know put a little bit on your finger and taste it first I've not had a single salsa that like I've died from you know taking a drop so if you are worried about spiciness for certain one just give yourself a little bit of taste and make sure you know that you like the salsa before you slather it all over or whatever you're trying there we go all right now it's time to go in for that thinly sliced steak I'm telling you the Oaxaca cheese it's what makes the quesadilla it's so stringy and melty and it's truly like a one-of-a-kind cheese like it's it's something really special the salsas are really on point too you'll find tons of different variety so that's going to wrap it up for our lunch spot number one we still got to go pick up some plucky us gorditas and tacos all on the list so we'll meet you guys at back at mercado median which is where we're going to get Latoya's and gordita [Music] [Music] as we have to lacoya right here TLA co y ou it's basically an oval shape blue masa stuffed with frijoles and then topped with salsa verde a little bit of lettuce you could get no phallus - and then a little bit of fresh jeans for the gordita same masa but it's circular shape and you can see this one is filled so this one is filled with chicharrón and then we have some nopales and cheese so the free quite similar taste the empty butter just subtle differences these are fry up a little bit more in these ones and if you taste it the crispy bit but that's the chicharrón in there and then you get the nice masa everything balances really well super delicious and taste there let's give it the deployer wait this one contrasts really well because I got different toppings I got salsa verde and we'll achoo this was a little bit lighter than the gordita both absolutely delicious would highly recommend trying one of these two you'll also see gorditas with yellow matzah sometimes but in this case they're making them with blue masa today okay I've been needing a little bit more vegetables today so perfect they contrast so much yeah we did such a journalist it's good we stopped for some pops hopefully you guys got the basics of till Koya versus gordita to Chloe is gonna be an oval shape filled with something like frijoles chicharrón or k so in our case we got frijoles and then for the guard eita very similar but it's big it's a big circle and then it's almost always teach your own and then they will fill it inside with your fresh toppings as opposed to the - Latoya where they put the toppings on top so pretty similar but there are some subtle differences between the two there are definitely both delicious so we're gonna finish our pops and then we have one more stop and I think I don't know about you but I'm absolutely full right now wait well sated we are going to go and try to find a little taco stand since you know tacos our street food as well and then it's time for a long break before dinner we'll meet you guys at the taco place [Music] [Music] all right so we have our last lunch stop of the day basically I just asked for tacos para llevar to go and this is what they gave me so these are oval shaped like quesadillas and I guess I mean adding cheese to this would basically make this a quesadilla so this one is some pork like shredded pork in a chili sauce then if we move over to this one this one I forget exactly what it is but it's another kind of pork but it's more fatty and this one's a lot more spicy than this one and then moving to the last one we have some picadillo so if you could do is basically ground meat with like peas and potatoes and it's kind of in like a stewed sauce all really good and then on all of these I got their spicy salsa their salsa Roja so let's give them a test all right first one picadillo blue masa super flavorful and delicious lot going on in there with like the different little vegetables and things um I forgot to ask for lettuce that would really help kind of brighten up everything but overall really delicious I'm gonna move on to this middle one mmm Wow that one's like nice and fatty and like really really good it's like mixed with like fatty pieces and like a little bit of crispy pieces move on to our last one that one's a listeners too it's got bigger pieces have like chunks of onion in it definitely less spicy than this middle one ultimately all really delicious and good for the pork here he said this one is spicier yeah it's like a lot more flavorful and like fatty [Music] oh wow that one good a little saltier yeah see you mean about the lettuce yeah it would be nice to have like some contrast with lettuce but I forgot to ask yeah definitely little bit fat here but it's good yeah I'm interesting kind as peas and yeah that's kind of like a big idea so I think the idea was actually made they have it in different cultures like I think I think Cuba has a different version it's all kind of similar but it's like oh it's always like stewed down and they're like some vegetables this one is like the softest and the palate I feel like yeah the counter psych department yeah you can get picadillo on a tostada I actually really like it on toast oh yeah let's say I want to try it yeah I haven't had any just out of you those are all really good for their own reasons yeah yeah they're pretty interesting alright guys so to quickly recap where we are in the day so far started off with Tomales then we moved to the torta de chilaquiles then we grabbed some quesadillas and then after the quesadillas we got the Sequoias and the gorditas outside of Mercado median before finally finishing up our little lunch for a with some blue masa tortillas of varying varieties and we have the little ice fruit snacks which we're a nice palate cleanser between all of the savory food that we had in order to eat this much Street food all you gotta do is just walk a bunch yeah we've probably walked like 20,000 steps or so we've been walking literally all day but I think safe to say we're both in need of a rest before we meet you guys for dinner which we are going to be having one of my favorite sandwiches deepam bakso and then we may have a tort or we may go for some quesadillas Freitas depends on how I'm feeling you guys are gonna have to wait around and see see you guys later tonight [Music] when I smell trust everybody as you can tell it's clearly nighttime we took a little bit of an afternoon break to let the all that food digest it's been a lot last stop of the beginner's guide to Mexico City Street food is a place called quesadilla Zamora in condesa on Zamora Street but they don't only sell kinases they have one of my favorite sandwiches which is the plum bah so you guys will have to wait and see and then we're also going to be picking up one of their other specialties which is a fried quesadilla absolutely divine can't wait to go pick these up I'm hungry again [Music] [Music] alright guys so we have our last trip through today sorry if it's really loud were literally right by a road this was the only place we could find a victim table to eat first up we have quesadillas fricassee these are fried quesadillas one of them is huitlacoche which is a mushroom and then the other one is NATO's both stuffed inside with Waka she's the same we had where our quesadillas earlier today then this little tasty number right here is called a tostada basically it's a circular tortilla that is fried crispy like very crispy then topped with beans and then any kind of meat like chicken lettuce etc on top of whatever now whoo quite possibly actually I'm gonna say it definitely my favorite sandwich Mexico City and its so these are called Cavazos which are basically cavasso bread it's actually different from torts of bread so cavasso bread is actually a specific type of bread it's softer and it's not quite like torta bread so remember how the torts of bread was crispy and kind of crackly on the outside much different this is much more like a white bread roll what they do is they dip these into chili sauce and then they fry them on both sides to get it like a little bit crispy and then on the inside it's kind of flattened and filled with chorizo and potatoes chorizo con Papa's and then they give you some queso fresco a little bit of crema and some shredded lettuce absolutely one of my favorite sandwiches in Mexico City here's the start of the last light of the day the bun is super pillowy soft and then you get the crunchy from the lettuce it's just like a really nice sandwich I love it and then I want to show you guys the inside of these tortillas so they're crispy and crackly on the inside and then just beautifully melted and I guess and they may have mixed up the order because this is not poblanos but no worries it's still gonna be delicious no matter what that's one of my all-time favorites is crunchy on the outside so like just moist and the filling is absolutely to die for then to finish up we'll take one bite of the dog tostada for you and it's interesting because most honest I have or they're actually served with full fillings so like the chickens not eat it up first you can get a variety of different fillings those products that literally go a million different ways possible but overall these are some great options that you guys can have in Mexico City absolutely delicious I'll touch back and give you guys a recap and hopefully some better audio in just a bit but hopefully you guys have enjoyed so far and before I jump to that recap I want you guys to guess how much we spent on all the food today I think you guys will find it pretty interesting just a month so if you have a guess leave it in the comments below and then I will update you guys in the outro at the end of the video [Music] [Music] hey everyone it's two days later just hanging out in Chapultepec Park for a little bit of a recap I still can't believe just how much food we ate in a single day but surprisingly enough we weren't like super super stuff because we you know we walked around literally the entire day and actually I just checked so we walked over 33,000 steps 16.6 miles and had over 1400 calories burn though I did think I went for a run that morning I forget so that might have been like three or four of those miles but all in all that was absolutely epic full day of eating let's unpack with some statistics though so in total we had nine different unique street food types we had the tamales the torta de chilaquiles the quesadillas the gordita the black oils the the tacos the pom bakso the fried quesadillas and the tostada nine different street foods it's just crazy and you know if you take those nine and then break them down into like the unique ones we had we had three different kind of tamales the Verde the raha and the dulce we had two different types of quesadillas we had three different types of the tacos with the various fillings and then obviously two different fried quesadillas so in total we had 15 unique street foods in this video that's just crazy and I'm telling you like this is kind of like the tip of the iceberg like we didn't talk about consomme flautas taquitos like regular chilaquiles the different soups like there's seriously so much variety it's it's honestly mind-blowing sometimes so if you guys had guesses for how much the street food actually cost today I have it all tallied up right here for the three tamales it was 42 pesos for the torta de chilaquiles it was 45 pesos for the quesadillas it was 70 pesos for the taquoia and the gordita it was 35 pesos for the three tacos it was 51 pesos and for the two PIM bozos the two fried quesadillas and the tostada it was 90 pesos bringing our total to 333 pesos and when you transfer that over to USD that's around $17 and nine three cents and then for most these places I did actually tip typically I feel like most people don't tip for street food but since I asked like questions and I was filming you know I'm a little more involved in at the average customer so I was tried to leave like at least like a 10 or 20 peso tip which is normally gonna be depending on how much you get probably at least 10% though probably closer to 15 if we call it 12.5% on our seventeen dollars and ninety three that's an extra two dollars and twenty four cents bringing our total to twenty dollars and seventeen cents for an entire day of eating for two people and I mean honestly like that was probably like you could have probably served four people with how much food we got in that single day so all in all this was one of my absolute favorite days in Mexico City and thank you all for making it this far in the video let me know down in the comments which one of these Street foods you want to most try or if you have tried some of these let me know which one is your favorite lastly thank you all for watching and letting me share this food journey with you it has been an absolutely unbelievable experience here the past four weeks and even though I have one week left I'm already planning on coming back there's no question about I will be back in Mexico City so I hope you all have enjoyed this beginner's guide to Mexico City Street food I'll catch you in the next one peace [Music]
