whispered there's no place here for her kind [Music] still on she came through the shame that flushed her face until at last she knelt before his feet [Music] and though she spoke no words everything she said was her as she poured her love for the master from her box of alabaster and i've come to pour [Music] my praise on him like oil from mary's i love pastor box don't be angry if i wash his feet with my teeth and i try them with my hair [Music] you weren't there [Music] the night he found me you did not feel what i felt when he wrapped his lung around me you don't know the cost of the oil [Music] i can't forget the way life used to be i was a prisoner to the sin that had me bound and i spend my days pouring my life without measure into a little treasure box i thought i found [Music] until the day when jesus came to me and healed my soul with the wonder of he is touched so now i'm giving back to him oh the praise he's worthy of i've been forgiven and that's why i love here so much and i've come to pour my praise on them like horror from mary's i love pastor [Music] don't be angry if i wash his feet with my tears and i try them with my hands [Music] [Applause] [Music] when he wrapped his loving arms around me yeah you don't know the cost of the oil now you don't know the you don't know the cause of the oil in my best we have come to the moment in worship experience where we prepare to enter into god's word and i invite you to pray with me as we move to this moment let us pray together search me o god and know my heart try me and see if there is any destructive way in me when you discover what does not belong remove it from me let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight o lord you are my strength you are my redeemer holy spirit do thy will do thy will holy spirit in the mighty magnificent awesome majestic and powerful name of jesus we pray and the people of god who love god may say amen our scripture reading today comes from judges chapter 11 verses 1 through 6. judges chapter 11 verses 1 through 6 and it reads as follows from the new international version jephthah the gillilite was a mighty warrior his father was gilead his mother was a prostitute gilead's wife also bore him sons and when they were grown up they drove jephthah away you are not getting any inheritance in our family they said because you are the son of another woman another translation reads you are the son of a prostitute so jephthah fled from his brothers and settled in the land of tobe where a gang of scoundrels and of the translation were a gang of riffraff another translation is where a gang of thugs gathered around him and followed him sometime later when the ammonites were fighting against israel the elders of gilead went to get jepta from the land of tobe come they said be our commander so we can fight the ammonites the elders said come be our commander so we can fight the ammonites may the lord have a blessing to the reading and hearing of god's holy word when you're in the midst of a pandemic you find yourself watching netflix hulu amazon prime apple tv and disney plus well i've got to share with you that recently a show has quietly endeared itself to the hearts of many people across this nation and the show is entitled this is us now i i must admit i have not seen every episode but recently i've been on one of those binges and i have to thank monica for introducing me to this show because i would come home at night after church and i would see monica on the couch crying i thought somebody had died i didn't know what was going on and i said monica what's what's happening why are you crying and her only answer was this is us those who watch the show know exactly what i'm talking about the show at some point will have you crying at another point you will be laughing bent over i realize that many are not familiar with the show and i'm not trying to preach about it or offer any analysis but simply share a simple idea that is at the core of the series and will help us understand the word of god better this is us is about three siblings kate kevin and randall kate and kev kevin are twins and white and randall is adopted in black now all of them were born on the same day the basis of the entire show is to demonstrate beauty pain passion love compassion tragedy and ultimately the amazing grace all people experience who are trying to find their purpose this is us is not explicitly theological but implicitly there is the idea of grace that is an undercurrent in just about every episode this is a shouts loudly that family can heal and offer hurt unlike any hurt anyone has ever experienced no one on the show is a villain and no one is a hero they are all protagonists and antagonists of their own story this is us intentionally and unintentionally draws from the larger biblical and theological themes we wrestle with as human beings it raises questions such as who are we what is my calling and am i who you say i am or am i more than you say i am even though i did everything you heard how do i reconcile with the person i love to hate and hate to love but cannot live without their love why do i sabotage myself when god opens a door it raises questions and we raise questions that it's easier to succeed and be a villain than stumble at being a hero what if we are all i am the amalgamation of pain and possibility hurt and hope triumph and tragedy despair and deliverance failure and success we realize that we are not either or but as human beings the biblical truth is that we are both and we've always been both and we are a combination of as one preacher says of horns and halos to just look at your neighbor if your neighbors around you right now they probably have a halo it's cocked to the side and they have some horns sticking out at the same time we are not one or the other we are always both and protagonist and antagonist villain and also hero the same mouth that sings sweet praises unto god is the same mouth that articulates profane curses upon god's people this is us this is who we are we are more than villains and yet we are less than heroes we are villainous heroes and heroes who are villains all at the same time this is us our human frailty and spiritual proclivity to dance with sin sing with sorrow flirt with the tragic and hold the hand of despair keeps the residue of contradiction upon every endeavor this is us and so i want to bring you to this text this i have to tell you this is one of my favorite texts look at this now now jepta was a mighty warrior his father was gilead his mother a prostitute let me say it again it'll come up in the lower third now jepta was a mighty warrior his father was gilead his mother a prostitute press between the pages of the story is the human of human narratives this is not traumatic acts in the bible caused by ammonites hittites amalekites moabites or even bud lights but the scars we examined were inflicted by family the knives of family are sharpened daily knives such as resentment jealousy passive aggressive action insecurity and contempt and the pages of judges when you read after the second chapter offer an amalgamation of tribal stories of heroism of would-be heroes attempting to make sense of the world they occupy these tribal stories were later edited to create a national story about the rise of israel stories passed from family to family and to show the later power of this story in the consciousness of all of the tribes that would eventually call themselves the nation of israel this is one such story passed down from parent to child from elder to elder of a man named jepta it says he was a mighty warrior his father was was gilead his mother was a prostitute do you see this juxtaposition no matter how you read the first verse the word refuses to be redacted from our class sensitivity the chapter sits in the purgatory between acceptance and rejection he cannot be fully accepted for his mother was a prostitute he cannot be fully rejected because his father was gilead he is from the line of gilead he was yet still the offspring of a late night tryst now now let me stop for a moment to offer a womanist hermeneutic of suspicion a woman is hermeneutic let me understand womanist is looking at the bible through the lens of of women especially black women hermeneutic is how you interpret and many times we always interpret from a patriarchal a male lens ah but we need to see why this term prostitute is used here if you go by the pages in scripture very quickly you will miss out on a deeper meaning it says here that the mother was a prostitute but we need to suspect why they use the term prostitute if you look at it from a male perspective she was a prostitute but with that woman as hermeneutic you raise the question of why is prostitute placed there because usually within the bible and the ancient tradition that a woman was called a prostitute who sleeps with a man to protect the reputation of the man so the man will not be seen as a predator because usually someone if they were a prostitute was usually someone who was young and who was trafficked so gilead was either involved in sleeping with someone who was trafficked or he forced himself on someone in order to protect his reputation they use the term prostitute we do not need to have a peculiar framework in reference to this idea this word prostitute as if it was some type of they were independent contractors they were trafficked and this man was benefiting from the trafficked individual so now hearing that it it reads very different because gilead is not this great and mighty and wonderful man but also a broken man who is involved in this misogynist activity his father was gilead his mother was a prostitute we know her reputation but we don't know her name and this is the beginning of the story and so we see that uh jepta lives in the purgatory of the in between he's not fully accepted and he cannot be fully rejected because on one side they want to reject him because of his mother but on the other side they cannot reject him because of his father and this becomes the first point i want you to understand this you need to have this lesson right here there is a danger of living in the purgatory of your pain and your promise you see what god has called you to be but you still have the stench of your foolishness is still fresh on your garments ah the stench of your yesterday still lingers even though you see the promise of your tomorrow you're caught in between the two and sometimes when you're caught in the purgatory of your pain and your promise you cannot move forward i'm reminded of a story shared by father greg boyle who started the homeboys inc out in california it's an amazing community organization where father greg boyle brings together young men who were formerly in gangs and they pay for tattoo removal because the tattoos are a sign that they were involved in something that was illicit but there was a story that he shares about a young man who had a tattoo removed from him the tattoo signaled that he had killed somebody he wanted to repent for that and live a new life and they removed the tattoo but the scar of the tattoo was still there and the young man stated that every time i look in the mirror i'm reminded of the stench of my yesterday he was caught between the purgatory of his yesterday and the possibility of tomorrow that even though he had the tattoo removed he still could not forget and other people would not let him forget what he used to be it is a challenge when you're living in between these two spaces the danger the danger of this purgatory and this is jepta mother called a prostitute father ah marty warrior he's in between these two spaces he's in between gilead and also a prostitute and this leads us to this idea i want to share with you i shared that first one with you i want you to have that one but this next one i believe will bless your spirit there is a danger living in the purgatory of your pain and your promise in between there but there is also a danger of defining your death your destiny by your deficits son of a prostitute son of prostitution there is a danger when you allow shame to take over your spirit it forces you to crawl underneath and live below your destiny to hide yourself and disconnect yourself from god when you think that if people know who you really are shame speaks to you shame whispers in your spirit shame will show up in your dreams shame will have you tell stories about yourself and what other people are saying about you it will cut you off and drown you i can tell you this that shame almost killed me i was afraid for years to tell the story of my sister and her mental illness dealing with paranoid schizophrenia i was living in shame afraid of what people would say but the day that i stepped out from the shadows to tell my sister's story and to tell my story in relationship to the woman who had the biggest influence in my life the reason that i love zora neale hurston maya angelou james baldwin the reason that i know langston hughes and the harlem renaissance the reason that i love jazz and i love writers and poetry is because of the brilliance of my sister that even through her challenges she poured into her little brother and the moment i said that shame will not hold me because she dealt with paranoid schizophrenia and took her own life was the moment that i was able to share my story and bless other people who were living in the shadows and now can step out into the marvelous light do not allow shame to keep you from your destiny do not define yourself by your deficits god does not when god sees you god sees what god has created and recognizes the possibilities that you can move into god sees wonder and beauty and power and creativity god sees a human being that can spread light into this world stop listening to the chorus of shame and listen to the choir of god's destiny and so jephthah was was living in between uh this pain and promise and jephthah could have been defining himself by his deficits but the story gets even deeper it's now that the story begins sharing that his mother's a prostitute but his father is one uh who has status in the community and his brothers his half-brothers gather together not unlike the story of joseph they gather together and try to block his blessing and they say to him you will not have our inheritance we are going to run you out of town because you know who your mama is now one must understand that uh the lineage is passed on through the father and so it didn't matter who his mother was he was gilead's child and therefore should receive some of the inheritance but one must understand this at any time many times many times when people are hating on you most people who hate on you see greatness in you you refuse to not acknowledge when people have to scheme to keep you from living into your greatness it is their issue not your issue the people have to work out so many things to trip you up you know you must be doing what god is calling you to do i like the way that one particular comedian said that uh if you've got three haters you need twenty more because the haters are only an indication that you must be moving in the right direction that if people are trying to trip you up because you're doing what god has called you to do your moral compass is correct you are rooted ethnically and you have been praying fervently and you know that god has poured into you and people are trying to trip you up well guess what lift your head up and say hate on with your hating self because i'm doing what god has called me to do and so his own family was trying to trip him up and as a result he's he's run out of town now i like the way that scripture shapes this says he's run out of town and he's living with riffraff another translation a band of adventurers another translation he's living with thugs of the translation he's living with people of ill repute either way it goes he's pushed out by his family he's living with riffraff and he has to live in a space called tobe here's the word i want you to understand you see you need to be delivered by daring to design your own story as a man thinks so he is you need to take hold of your story but look at this even though his mother was a prostitute his father had status named gilead scripture records him as a mighty warrior somebody needs to shout on that i was born into a difficult situation but when they write the record on me they will say that i'm a mighty warrior i will be listed in the record of judges as one of the great judges it says i'm a mighty warrior it says egypt is a mighty warrior i will not be defined by what other people think and this is a word for you today you must take hold of your story stop letting people define who you are whatever you say about you will define you if you allow other people to tell you who you are you will live out the script they wrote for you sometimes you need to sit down and write your own script you need to write down uh your own affirmations if nobody else will affirm you affirm yourself if nobody else will sing a song for you write your own song if nobody else will play music for you play your own music if nobody else will dance for you dance for yourself you've got to take hold of your own story if you're going to make it through this world take hold of your story and define yourself the way that god defines you god has already defined you this way simply by saying i knew you before you were formed in your mother's womb do you not know i have plans for you plans for you to prosper not to destroy you god has already defined you in a beautiful way take hold of it but you've got to speak life to yourself and stop waiting for somebody to speak life into you he was forced into the land of tobe now may i teach this for a minute it says he goes to the land of tobe now this is a contradiction let me break down that in hebrew tobe simply means good land but when you look at it geographically when you understand the topography it's a place where really nothing grows but how could it be a good land if nothing grows there it's a difficult place it's a desert nobody wants to move there but yet it is named a good land this seems to be a particular contradiction ah but here is a lesson that you've got to understand what you thought was a deficiency may be your divine development tobe is the place where he learned how to be a leader all of a sudden it says that riffraff thugs were following him they recognized that he had the gift of leadership and he is being trained in tobe to be leader of the israelites if he never went to tobe he would never end up becoming a judge if he never became a judge he would never end up defeating the enemies of israel sometimes the most difficult things that happen in your life god has created divine synchronicity to place you in that place not to destroy you but so that you may develop i'm reminded of a friend of this congregation a sister by the name of erica bracey i had the privilege to give the eulogy of her mother a few days ago helen bracey and erica bracey is the founder of brave chick inc brave chick inc is an organization of black women who have been fighting or dealt with cancer and have overcome and i heard erica at the bet awards make this statement and it made me shudder and shout at the same time she took her award she stepped up to the mic she looked out at the audience her mother was out there smiling and she said cancer i hate you but i thank you because if i had never gone through that moment i would not be the woman i am today oh it was so powerful family when she stood there with such authority speaking about the fact that i've been to the land of tobe but i found out it was a tough blessing and there's somebody who's listening to my voice right now you're in tobe you're in a pandemic tope but i'm here to let you know that god is developing you in the midst of your tobe situation somebody in their room you need to say tobe is tough but it's about to bless me ah he is sent to tobe a tough blessing a place that is good but yet it is difficult at the same time in order to become a leader you need a tobe experience let me see if i can help you out that i may close this message uh that i may bid you good day may the road rise to meet you and may the wind always be at your back but i'm reminded of a story that i heard about the daphne plant i mentioned the daphne plant because it reminds me of of my sister because the daphne planted it said that the daphne plant cannot grow in a greenhouse because where things are potted and beautiful and easy the daphne plant dies when things are easy but the daphne plant thrives when you place it in a place where it has to fight for sun where it has to fight in order for its roots to grow and find water that have developed strength because they call the daphne plant a shade tolerant plant you missed your shop in other words when other plants try to cover the daphne plant the daphne plant has a way of moving and growing to always reach toward the sun you missed your shout again the daphne plant when others throw shade the daphne plant will find a way to get to the sun and i have some good news that somebody needs to have a daphne plant spirit that even when life throws shade at you you've got to move in such a way that you will lift up your hands not to the hills but lift up your hands knowing that your help comes from the lord you need a daphne plant spirit in order for you to thrive in this world is there anybody in here that knows that god gave you a spirit a daphne plant spirit to be able to make it through the most difficult set of circumstances you are shade tolerant you can handle it when they throw their shade even when your family your family uh tries to push you aside there's something in you uh that is stronger than what is pushing on you uh even when you're in your purgatory between your pain and your promise you can step in and you can create your own story and say yes i've made some decisions i've had many troubles and problems but through it all i've learned to trust in jesus i've learned to trust in god this is the lesson that you will live at moments between your pain and your promise that there will be moments where those spirits will whisper to you called shame to force you to live your life based on your deficiencies but i'm here to let you know take hold of your story tell your story the way that god wants you to tell the story and witness and watch god move in a marvelous way god bless you i want to take this moment to welcome you and to offer something to you i welcome you to this community we know as trinity united church of christ i offer at have had family to try and block your blessing for those of you who know you have a destiny but you are still looking at your deficits take hold of your story god has plans for you not to destroy not to harm but for you to prosper i offer this and pray over you at this moment may every spirit of shame and deficiency insecurity and jealousy be banished from your household may feelings of inadequacy evaporate from your soul may god god's power and holy spirit rest on you in ways you have never experienced in your life and when this broadcast ends may you feel the welling up of the holy spirit in your life that you will step from this moment cross the threshold of your new tomorrow and live into the call that god has placed on your heart may the road rise to meet you may the wind always be at your back may the sunlight of jesus christ always grace your cheek and may rain gently fall upon your field and may god keep you in the hollow of god's hand may you design your own story stop living in that purgatory between your pain and your promise may know may you know that you are a mighty warrior you are a powerful thinker you are an amazing human being you are god's child until we meet again stop being your villain and your antagonist and start living out to be your hero and the protagonist of the story that god has scripted for you god bless [Music] [Music] [Music] come on now come
