hey everyone James Reeves with tfbtv in the midst of the coronavirus the covet 19 pandemic hysteria everyone everyone we know people who didn't even think about owning a gun like two weeks ago now they're all lining up around gun stores I think it's freaking awesome one of those people includes my stepdad my stepdads like hey J what do I get what do I get to defend myself and your mother and I'm like easy Alan pick up an ar-15 of course he's looking at me gives me this incredulous look he was like oh I was thinking about getting a shotgun you know whatever so we have this long discussion about what firearms are the best to defend yourself in times like these especially for entry-level users who don't really know what they're doing so I said you know what let me make a video I apologize in advance to my experience tfbtv viewers out there because this is going to be geared towards beginners we're talking about the top 5 guns that you can use to defend yourself and hopefully hopefully by the time we get to the end of this list you're blind panic by becomes more like an educated impulse investment firearms serves several important purposes during times like this first of all self-defense personal protection second survival you can use them to hunt third currency I don't think shits gonna go that sideways at least this time but you can use firearms and ammunition to barter as essentially like a makeshift currency they're pretty decent investments they hold their value so even when this all blows over it isn't like you're gonna be stuck with something that's totally worthless I'm trying to think of what factors are important for a gun like this especially for somebody who is an entry level user so I'm thinking first of all the most important thing ease of use second of all power how effective is it going to be third range not quite as important especially because many of us are considering using these just to defend ourselves within our homes but still a factor to be discussed and fourth practicality some people might be saying James were reliability I didn't hear you bring up reliability that's because I'm not gonna bring up reliability all of these need to be a reliability of five out of five stars otherwise it's not worth owning the last thing you want is your firearm that you're supposed to depend on to go down whatever you need it the most so we're not even going to discuss reliability because I'm only going to be talking about reliable firearms to begin with for number five we're talking about a compact or full size 9-millimeter pistol I like them because ease of use very good I'm giving it four out of five stars in that category 9-millimeter pistols are very light recoiling they're easy to reload they're easy to manipulate you can even conceal them really they're relatively uncomplicated but the thing is when I think about my mom who has a hard time finding her sent email folder for America Online what I worry about for her is not only getting around in the chamber but keeping one there that is if I hand my mom a pistol and empty pistol and a full magazine she's probably gonna put the magazine in the pistol and be alright we're good to go there it is this thing is hot and it's like no Connie no it's not you have to wreck the slide and that also can be difficult for some people especially the elderly because it does take some force to fully rack the slide and then slingshot it where it actually chambers the round instead of easing it up or not getting it back far enough for power we're talking two and a half out of five nine-millimeter is not all that powerful yes it is what the military uses yes it is with the FBI and a lot of police forces use however you're only talking about three to five hundred foot-pounds of energy generated by 9-millimeter which is not very much like Clint Smith from Thunder ranch says pistols put holes in people rifles put holes through people and shotguns with the right load at the right range will take a chunk of mita range we're talking two out of five I mean really the best shooters can reliably make hits at maybe a hundred yards on a silhouette target silhouette target let's see if we can hit it with fifty yards out the sites aren't that great you don't have a very stable platform to shoot from the practicality handguns are about as good as it gets they're inexpensive ammos plentiful especially for nine-millimeter they're concealable you can use them as a backup gun you don't need to rely on a handgun as your primary firearm so you can get a rifle or a shotgun and also carry a handgun in a holster that also means you can lend it to your buddies if you have somebody who's unarmed who needs a pistol for self-protection it's pretty easy to just lend them a 9-millimeter pistol and they're probably gonna know how to use it or at least can be shown how to use it rather quickly so all in all I'm gonna give 9-millimeter compact and full sized handguns three and a half out of five stars my three favorites for this category are the Glock 17 and 19 those have a 15 or 17 round capacity depending on the model very easy to shoot and perhaps the most reliable sidearms you can buy but they don't have safeties so if you want a safety or if you want something a little bit less expensive I like the Smith & Wesson M&P series same capacity functionally the same performance a little bit less expensive and you can get them with a manual safety if you want to go gucchi on them you can get the sig p226 or 2 to 9 series I like these guns because again they're utterly reliable proven designs but they have an all-metal frame so they're a little bit heavier than the polymer pistols like the Smith & Wesson M&P or the Glock which means a heavier frame less felt recoil number for 12-gauge shotgun and there are a lot of misconceptions about how easy to use and how effective a 12-gauge shotgun is that we're gonna address momentarily but let's talk about why it's good and that would be the power department where it gets a 5 out of 5 if you can't solve the problem with a 12-gauge shotgun it pretty much can't be solved remember I mentioned that you get like three four hundred foot-pounds of energy from a nine-millimeter projectile that weighs like a quarter ounce with a 12-gauge slug that weighs one ounce you get over 3,000 foot-pounds energy the main issue and the source of one of those misconceptions I'm talking about is that people believe that you can use birdshot to defend yourself I do not recommend this at all birdshot is not lethal even at point-blank range but if you use buckshot or slugs it's an absolute monster now ease of use I'm only gonna give this three out of five everybody always thinks that shotguns are so simple they're so easy to use but it really it's it's not the case not only does it take a little bit of technical know-how to top off a tube or to load or unload chamber around in a shotgun but it takes a little bit of coordination to reload one under pressure and it takes some good thumb strength actually Jam a tube up and let's also talk about recoil yes they do generate a lot of power but if you're shooting buck or slugs I mean I weigh a hundred and eighty-five pounds and I definitely feel that pressure whenever I fire slug or double-aught buck everybody thinks that they went and they shot a 12-gauge when they were a kid and they were shooting birdshot shooting skeet plays whatever and they're like oh that wasn't that bad well yeah you're probably using reduced power bird loads try that with double up buck change your tune just a little bit if it doesn't dislocate your shoulder so that's why I worry about someone like say my stepdad relying on a 12-gauge shotgun for personal defence range we're talking only one star out of five would double up buck you can't do better than say 50 yards before your pattern breaks up to the point that you're really just guessing speaking of that's another misconception it's just like hey all I have to do is shoot at this guy's general direction if I've got bug shot not the case at ten yards you're talking about only a four or five inch group say with buckshot and at 20 yards that does open up to anywhere between 10 and 15 inches but 20 yards is quite a distance away so while you do get some spread with a 12-gauge shotgun it isn't like just point in their general direction and pull the trigger practicality I'm going to give them three and a half out of five they're pretty practical they're effective and it's a little bit like riding a bike everybody has used a shotgun before whether it was when they were a kid or as a young adult and everybody kind of has an idea of how they work so that makes them a little bit more practical than something like say an ar-15 12-gauge is cheap easy to find albeit a little bit heavy and twelve shotguns are legal especially pumps just about anywhere I guess if you give a [ __ ] about that your main downsides you're talking limited capacity slow rate of fire especially with a pump they're heavy and like I said they can be a little bit complicated for people to use especially under pressure those are your main downsides but we're still gonna give 12-gauge shotguns 4 out of 5 stars now as far as shotguns that I like I think the Remington 870 police pump the police model that is the one made in illion New York great quality control out of that factory uses a steel receiver so those things can take a beating and they're not all that expensive similarly for semi-automatic I like the Remington 1187 police it's a semi-automatic shotgun decent capacity and it's got a self-regulating gas system so you can put birdshot in it or you can put slugs and you don't have to do anything to make sure that it's gonna work it's functionally food proof finally it's kind of a sleeper hit I like the Mossberg maverick so Mossberg answer to the Remington 870 series is the Mossberg 500 that's more expensive than the Mossberg maverick the Mossberg maverick is a budget Mossberg 500 but it works very well it's very reliable and it even has some parts compatibility with the very popular Mossberg 500 the main kicker here is I've seen these things you can get them at like big-box stores like Academy for less than $200 so it's a very budget-friendly way to protect yourself if you can't afford something more expensive moving on to number three I like pistol caliber carbines these are basically rifle step fire pistol calibers of course I like them in the 9-millimeter range ease of use I'm giving pistol caliber carbines four and a half out of five stars and many experienced shooters out there might be surprised to hear me say that that's because it isn't like you you grew up on Pepe's farm with an H&K mp5 everybody had like a shotgun or a hunting rifle if they grew up in the country nobody really had like a submachine gun right or a pistol caliber carbine so a lot of people think oh whoa whoa I've never used one of these that doesn't mean that if you just spend a little bit of time you can't learn how to use them they're very soft or equal they're typically very easy to use and the recoil springs the magazines not as tight as what you would have on like a pistol or a rifle but you're still shooting a very soft recoiling pistol caliber round so it's easy to shoot easy to manipulate load and unload if you know how to use a pistol you can figure out how to use a pistol caliber carbine pistol caliber carbines are the lightest recoiling guns on this list these are the easiest to use with a silencer so if you have a suppressor or silenced or you think about getting one pistol caliber carbines are perfect they're easy to mount optics and flashlights on and they're usually very lightweight for being rifles like they can be five pounds or less for power we're giving it three stars out of five why does this get half a star more than pistol right because they both use 9-millimeter if you use a 16 inch pistol caliber carbine that's gonna have fifteen to twenty percent more energy than a pistol because the longer barrel has increased velocity so well it's not as powerful as a rifle or a shotgun to put it into context a nine-millimeter from a 16 inch barrel is going to generate around the same force as a 357 magnum revolver range you're talking three out of five again because of that additional velocity and because of better sights optic mounting solutions you can reliably make hits from like a hundred to a hundred and fifty yards maybe a little bit beyond with a pistol caliber carbine practicality three out of five if you're going nine-millimeter you're talking about using the same ammunition that you should hopefully have for your pistol inexpensive ammo easy to find anywhere also you can use if you get say a Glock magazine fed carbine like the Ruger pc9 you can use the same magazines in your pistol caliber carbine that you can use in your pistol so you've got the same magazines for both down sides our most of us are probably going to have to familiarize ourselves with one and there are some people who believe that if you're going to have a rifle size package you should have a rifle size round and that pistol caliber carbine is a little bit anemic or underpowered but I like these as picks for home defense overall I'm gonna give it four stars because I think it's about this as a shotgun in terms of practicality and usefulness I like the Ruger PC carbine that I just mentioned it's a 9 millimeter carbine made by Ruger they work very well easy to mount optics and lights and they take Glock magazines I also like the sig MPX which you can find presumably in big-box stores this one's going to be a little bit more expensive but the sig MPX is in my opinion one of the best pistol caliber carbines out there I also like the CM mg Banshee and nine-millimeter again this is basically an ar-15 but it takes Glock magazines I've reviewed it for tfbtv works very well I think this would be an excellent choice moving to number two we're looking at a magazine fed or a clip fed rifle that isn't an ar-15 essentially what you're saying is I want the best possible thing to defend myself but I'm too much of a [ __ ] to own an ar-15 or am in a communist state good examples we're talking like the Ruger mini-14 and the Ruger mini 30 series Ruger mini-14 s they look like regular hunting rifles but they've got replaceable magazines up sides of the mini-14 they're reasonably priced they're great guns they're reliable and you can get them in more States and you can get an ar-15 I like the fight light scr this is basically an air 15 that just has a regular sporting stock it even takes our 15 magazines in mini a ar-15 parts I also like mag or clip fed surplus rifles like something from the m1 family like the m1 carbine the m1 air the m14 from Springfield ease of use were given these guns a four out of five they're pretty easy to use they're pretty handy they're not as Organon Accor as accessorizing ball as an air 15 and they're typically louder or at least as loud as a shotgun if you fire one without hearing protection it's gonna really suck if you have to pop one of these off indoors they're easier to use reload and manipulate than most hunting rifles that you grew up with and calibers in the 223 range are gonna be very powerful but very light recoil anything beyond that like 308 76039 all bets are off recoil goes up from there while power goes up but it could be not as easy to manage for most people how are we're gonna give it four to five out of five smaller calibers like two twenty three are plenty powerful they're used by our military but they're extremely light recoiling it surprises most people moderate calibers like 300 blackout or 76039 are gonna be more powerful in exchange for a little bit more recoil and then high caliber is like 308 are going to be extremely powerful probably overkill for two legged but for four-legged you can take just about anything in North America hunting range you're talking four to five out of five depending on the caliber with a 223 you can reliably make hits up to five hundred six hundred yards and a 308 can go as far as a thousand yards practicality we're gonna say three and a half out of five they're powerful they've got long range they're not gonna freak anyone out and that's another issue I understand there are a lot of people who just don't want to own an air 15 or be seen with an ar-15 whatever I think that's lame but it's your decision these guns because of their standard hunting profile but stocks they're much more approachable they're legal in most states they've got a higher capacity than say like a regular hunting rifle or a shotgun plus easy to change magazines quickly on the down sides they're usually more expensive than an air 15 but not as functional and not as ergonomic they also sometimes take proprietary magazines and parts or accessories can be more difficult to find for something like a surplus rifle or an m1 or the Aries scr versus like a standard ar-15 I'm gonna say overall this is a pretty good choice which is why it's number two and it gets four and a half out of five stars let's wrap this list up with the number one you guys have gotten plenty of hints so you shouldn't be surprised to find out that my number one pick is the ar-15 which ar-15 do I like God guys there are so many good options out there and I've reviewed so many of them on tfbtv just do a search of our history and find our air 15 review videos I will say I like to recommend something in the 16 inch length because it's a good compromise between velocity and handiness if you'd like that word check out my video the ultimate urban rifle that I did with Clint Smith at Thunder ranch and there's a good explanation as to why I feel like 16 inches the perfect for an AR ease-of-use we're gonna give it four out of five they're very lightweight they're usually less than seven pounds also extremely light recoiling people who are new shooters they think and the ar-15 like I don't want to shoot that no dislocate my shoulder and then you take them to the range and you have them shoot with 223 five five six ar-15 and they're like oh my god like this thing doesn't kick at all this is fun so they're very light recoil and guns they work very well and they really blow away people's misconceptions about the platform there ergonomics are excellent they're made so you can do any manipulation that you need to do load unload take it off safe take it on safe charge it whatever you need to do with your hand on the grip that is with your firing hand holding the pistol grip you can do everything that you need to do with your support hand they're also easy to figure out how to use if you spend just a very short time learning it I understand that many of you didn't grow up around an ar-15 many of you never even been behind an ar-15 but trust me there's a reason why our military uses the m16 which is very similar to the ar-15 and that's because they're reliable they're effective but they're also relatively uncomplicated to use in fact I would say that they're easier to use reload fire manipulate than most conventional traditional hunting rifles downside is you desk pop with one of these it's gonna be really loud that is you fire this inside your house especially if you have an error with a muzzle break they are pretty freaking loud notwithstanding the fact that they are very light recoiling power and range are kind of inextricably linked they're related to the velocity of the projectile now 223 has pretty good ballistics you can make hits up to five hundred six hundred yards with your 16-inch barrel a are 223 is a small round I mean it is basically a 22 round so it generates most of its power through fragmentation that is whenever it hits a soft target as long as it's going over 2,500 feet per second it's going to reliably fragment and that is basically like explode inside of the target in order for it to go 2,500 feet per second you need a long enough barrel where it'll accelerate to that point so with a 16-inch barrel 223 round is still moving at 2500 feet per second out to 200 yards so inside of 200 yards it's going to be very lethal and you're still gonna manage to put holes and stuff out to five hundred six hundred yards with a 16 inch barrel if you go shorter than that then you tend to lose velocity and lose range the shorter you go one other thing I want to talk about there's another lawyer that got in touch with me had the same conversation with me James what should I get when I said nay r15 he's like yeah well I don't want her to blow a hole through my attacker and into my kid's room doesn't work like that because of the fragmentation I just talked about because that round is so little and it's moving so fast whenever it hits say like sheetrock it's already fragmenting when it's coming out the other side of the sheetrock and very rarely will you have a 223 round even if you totally miss what you're shooting at go through to sheetrock walls compare that with like a nine millimeter or 45 or a 12-gauge those will penetrate three four walls if you miss what you're shooting at practicality we're gonna give them a four out of five you've got a lot of ar-15s out there so parts and accessories easy to find 2:23 ammo easy to find ar-15 magazines cheap and once again easy to find it's what your local law enforcement is probably using it's what the military is using if you need to source parts accessories you're going to be able to do that just about anyone can handle shooting one as long as you know how to manipulate it shooting ones easy they're light recoiling they're lightweight they're easy to carry they work well at long range they work well at short range they're inexpensive for what they do and it's possible to get a decent quality ar-15 for under 500 bucks they've got high-capacity you've got a higher volume of fire than say a hunting rifle or a shotgun you can use them to hunt and take small game if you need to really the only downside is the learning curve and the fact that it just kind of freaks some people out I suggest you get over it and just recognize guys that narrow 15 is pretty damn good for personal defence which is why it gets 5 out of 5 stars and is the number one and our list for guns to defend yourself during a state of emergency that took way longer than I expected and didn't even get to talk about half the stuff I wanted to talk about so if you have a specific question leave it in the comments otherwise thanks a ton for watching and thanks to our sponsors Ventura munitions and Top Gun supply guys be safe out there be courteous but most of all be cool to each other take care [Music]
