it is so easy to assume an enemy is a friend when he has a cute and harmless face mask on even a poisonous snake can look like a friendly pet if we are not aware of its true nature it is important to truly see sin for what it really is romans 1 29-31 they have been filled with every kind of wickedness evil greed and depravity they are full of envy murder strife deceit and malice they are gossips slanderers god haters insolent arrogant and boastful they invent ways of doing evil they disobey their parents they have no understanding no fidelity no love no mercy unmasking sin's true nature helps us to realize why we shouldn't tread lightly whenever it shows its colors second timothy 2 22 flee also useful lusts but follow righteousness faith charity peace with them that call on the lord out of a pure heart james 4 7 submit yourselves then to god resist the devil and he will flee from you abstain from all appearance of evil if abstaining in fleeing sin seems to be a recurrent term in scriptures then that suggests that it isn't something to toy with the bible doesn't mince words when describing sin or unrighteousness but our generation has consciously or unconsciously chosen to make it seem less forceful or dangerous second corinthians 11 3 but i am afraid that just as eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to christ there are many nice names that sin is called these days weakness shortcomings or frail human nature but the question that comes to mind is how do we as christians overcome this rot when we won't acknowledge that we are in a battle for our very souls how do we triumph over a foe that we have assumed is just an inconvenient friend jesus shows that sin is man's greatest enemy not just sickness afflictions or sorrow and that this is why he died to give us power over it romans 6 12-14 therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness but rather offer yourselves to god as those who have been brought from death to life and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness for sin shall no longer be your master because you are not under the law but under grace if sin is a foe then we must fight it so that it doesn't lord over or become our master second peter 2 19 they promised them freedom while they themselves are slaves of depravity for people are slaves to whatever has mastered them sin wants nothing more than to control us and rob us of god's presence and light in our hearts so we must rise with a mindset to fight and overcome sin we must stand in faith believing that jesus paid the price for us to walk in liberty from iniquity first timothy 6 12 fight the good fight of the faith take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses a wise man once said what you don't want don't watch it take a foothold what you don't confront you can't conquer what you don't resist has a right to remain genesis 4 6-8 then the lord said to cain why are you angry why is your face downcast if you do what is right will you not be accepted but if you do not do what is right sin is crouching at your door it desires to have you but you must rule over it now cain said to his brother abel let's go out to the field while they were in the field kane attacked his brother abel and killed him there comes a time when every saved person must say i must rule over sin the very sin god delivered me from cannot keep sneaking back into my life miserable with the results of a sinful life galatians 5 1 stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith christ hath made us free and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage so it is possible to be entangled in the very bondage that you have been set free from but if we strive to be free from sin's grip we will be free god's deep wisdom on how to be free from sins hold is shown in hebrews 12. in your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood and have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son it says my son do not make light of the lord's discipline and do not lose heart when he rebukes you because the lord disciplines the one he loves he chastens everyone he accepts as his son endure hardship as discipline god is treating you as his children for what children are not disciplined by their father if you are not disciplined and everyone undergoes discipline then you are not legitimate not true sons and daughters at all moreover we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it how much more should we submit to the father of spirits and live they disciplined us for a little while as they thought best but god disciplines us for our good in order that we may share in his holiness no discipline seems pleasant at the time but painful later on however it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it therefore strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees make level paths for your feet so that the lame may not be disabled but rather healed the baseline is simply responsibility taking responsibility to ensure that your spirit soul and body is disciplined to follow jesus's word and his spirit ephesians 2 12-13 therefore my dear friends as you have always obeyed not only in my presence but now much more in my absence continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling for it is god who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose five true characteristics of sin number one sin is secretive but its regrets are public for a lot of us our lives are full of moments when sin tricked us to stay hidden while we did things that we were sure was either sinful immoral or illegal after all nobody will know sin whispers but if we are being truthful we know without a shadow of doubt that even though we did wrong in secret the regrets or repercussions can be very public an example that comes to mind readily is david let's take a close look at second samuel 11. one evening david got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace from the roof he saw a woman bathing the woman was very beautiful and david sent someone to find out about her the man said she is bethsheba the daughter of ilium and the wife of uriah the hittite then david sent messengers to get her she came to him and he slept with her then she went back home the woman conceived and sent word to david saying i am pregnant then david said to uriah go down to your house and wash your feet so uriah left the palace and a gift from the king was sent after him at david's invitation he ate and drank with him and david made him drunk but in the evening uriah went out to sleep on his mat among his master servants he did not go home in the morning david wrote a letter to joab and sent it with uriah in it he wrote put uriah out in front where the fighting is fiercest then withdraw from him so he will be struck down and die after the time of mourning was over david had her brought to his house and she became his wife and bore him a son but the thing david had done displeased the lord david thought he had gotten away with that act of adultery but its effects were about to spring out deeper and deeper he went in his secret sin till he murdered an innocent man eventually everyone in israel got to know what he was trying so hard to hide and for years to come even his own children would be hurt the sexually immoral life becoming stuck in that cycle too no matter how secret our unrighteousness is god always knows and the devil will always use it to bring shame or dishonor to us number two sin is enticing impleasurable to the flesh for few moments but painful in the long run hebrews 11 25 he chose to be mistreated along with the people of god rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin sin blinds our mind to the grave consequences of sin by being pleasurable to the flesh at first however at the end the pain comes now then my sons listen to me do not turn aside from what i say keep to a path far from her do not go near the door of her house lest you lose your honor to others and your dignity to one who is cruel lest strangers feast on your wealth and your toil enrich the house of another at the end of your life you will groan when your flesh and body are spent you will say how i hated discipline how my heart spurned correction i would not obey my teachers or turn my ear to my instructors and i was soon in serious trouble in the assembly of god's people number three sin is forceful and controlling but appears harmless satan and sin have a sneaky way of coming into a man's life looking so harmless number three sin is a thief but appears as a friend at first it is important to see the devil beyond the mask he puts forward his aim still remains killing stealing and destroying he steals our peace and joy after the guilt of living a sinful life hits our conscience he steals our precious relationship with god because when our hearts are heavy with regrets we naturally want to draw back from god or people that can help sin will always cost much more in the long run than we are bargained for number five sin is dangerous but appears safe at first samson never thought a day would come when the same people that feared his might would become the people prodding and mocking him in their feasts judges 16. one day samson went to gaza where he saw a prostitute he went in to spend the night with her so delilah said to samson tell me the secret of your great strength and how you can be tied up and subdued with such nagging she prodded him day after day until he was sick to death of it so he told her everything no razor has ever been used on my head he said because i have been a nazirite dedicated to god from my mother's womb if my head were shaved my strength would leave me and i would become as weak as any other man after putting him to sleep on her lap she called for someone to shave off the seven braids of his hair and so began to subdue him and his strength left him when the people saw him they praised their god saying our god has delivered our enemy into our hands the one who laid waste our land and multiplied our slain while they were in high spirits they shouted bring out samson to entertain us so they called samson out of the prison and he performed for them when they stood him among the pillars sadly samson's life shows that sin is so dangerous even though you feel secure at first let us pray father thank you for unmasking sin thank you for revealing how dangerous and destructive it is even though the devil paints it as pleasurable jesus i lean on you in your spirit today for the grace to take the responsibility of standing firm help me to stand fast in the liberty that christ has made me free and i declare in the name of jesus that the enemy will not succeed to blind my eyes to sin any more in jesus name amen you
