this channel is part of the history hit Network [Music] foreign [Music] May 1798 40 000 soldiers ten thousand Sailors and more than 200 scientists join a ship with no idea of their destination [Music] since the revolution England and France have been sworn enemies the French government has instructed Napoleon Bonaparte to invade England given how unlikely this project is to succeed Bonaparte prefers to attack England's Colonial interests the source of the country's fortunes but the success of his plan entirely depends on the secrecy surrounding this huge military expedition in which young students from some of France's top universities are participating well video here we are hey have you ever seen so many people have you ever seen so many Soldiers and Sailors I don't know where are we going judwa but I'm delighted to be part of the adventure aren't you curious about our destination I have no objection to this time in any case they'd hardly tell mere students like us where we're going could be Rome no [Music] Portugal or Bengal General Clipper you cannot leave us in ignorance a man of your standing would surely be aware of our destination [Music] surely General Manu you must know where we're heading take care degenet you know we are all under orders to keep our destination a secret only a privileged few like Morse the famous mathematician and Bertoli a renowned physician a party to bonaparte's Secrets 12 citizen Mont are you thinking about the future reserved for our Scholars on this glorious Expedition no I was thinking about the English you must confess General they have a strong presence in the Mediterranean and that Admiral Nelson dreams of facing you in battle well then let Nelson waste this time dreaming [Music] Bonaparte takes to the Sea leading a fleet of 400 ships but at all costs he must avoid the English the Masters Of The Seas and Nelson's fearsome Fleet in the Mediterranean [Music] Bonaparte took part in the French Revolution and enjoyed a dazzling rise to military Glory at the age of 29 the young General in Chief is launching an ambitious Expedition that will if successful opened the gates to the Orient and make him a rival to the great conquerors of the past Caesar and Alexander whom he so admires the vast Convoy advances desperately slowly but by chance it manages to avoid the English Bonaparte even manages to seize the island of Malta without any trouble around 40 scientists are put off by the conditions on board and frightened by the military nature of the Expedition so they take advantage of their stop-on Malta to demand to leave the Convoy and return to France there are now 167 left at odds with the soldiers who are making their lives a misery these soldiers are crafty Lots video and what would you do with only 30 Sous from meals each day manage how would you like it without enough food to eat and packed in 80 per room with a basic hammock and a blanket for your bed not to mention the stink below day I just hope the voyage won't be too long are both students of the echol polytechnique where they became friends [Music] foreign with the enthusiasm of their youth and their heads filled with dreams of discoveries and exploits on a suggestion from Marsh their geometry Professor they signed up for this great Expedition [Music] villier is just 18. he hails from a family that was ruined by the revolution he joined the Polytechnic 15 months previously with the ambition to become a civil engineer at the age of 23 joloir had just graduated in engineering when he joined the adventure [Music] who kept a very interesting Journal are highly representative of this group of young men who joined the scientific Expedition an announcement from General in Chief Bonaparte men you are embarking on the conquest of Egypt a country that has had Untold influence on World Civilization and trade you will be dealing a painful blow to Britain while we waited to hit them with the Cuda grass the people with whom we will be living are muhammadins you must respect their mufties and imams as you respect your own Bishops and rabbis an announcement from General in Chief the land of the Pharaohs is a dream destination and on every ship this news is met with enthusiasm foreign the cradle of civilization Hey Kevin I must confess I have wanted to make this Voyage my whole life we are going to a beautiful country where we will achieve great things you will find different Customs from those you are used to in Europe you will have to get used to them [Music] the invasion of Egypt or the possession of Egypt would lead to the control of the Mediterranean which would take that away from the British Navy and but would also lead to an Overland attempt at perhaps British India of course where there were French interests at the same time to reach the Indies English ships had to sail around Africa Bonaparte also has to examine the possibility of a twin Port Arrangement or even a canal linking the Mediterranean to the Red Sea which would allow French ships to bypass English trade routes [Music] it is also instructed to plan for an enduring French presence in Egypt because of the twin port or a canal is to be created a stable physician in Egypt will be required in order to use them at every step we will have Adventures to inspire the French people signed Bonaparte Fallout Egypt we're going to Egypt it's such a country worthy of admiration and study but I didn't learn how to measure civilization at the police technique how does one go about it are you disappointed no are you mad if I don't know I will learn [Music] when they discover that Egypt is their destination these young men aren't thinking about war Conquest they are mainly thinking about what they will discover there in the Egypt they'd fantasized about Egypt is fashionable and they will also be able to do their job there trying to improve people's lives the revolution has only just happened the revolution that considered the Pharaohs to be the source of civilization so they aren't just bringing civilization to the Egyptians they'll be taking civilization back to its very cradle it's in this Spirit the Bonaparte these Scholars and these artists head for Egypt takes a very wide range of specialist Scholars with him because he's going to need them firstly to help the Army in its Conquest but also to prepare for an enduring French settlement in the country Egypt is far from France so soldiers have to be fed crops watered plans drawn up they need fortifications and much more so all kinds of different experts are required to support the General in Chief of course are not prepared for what is in store they are academics used to Laboratories who have no idea what wall or Conquest really mean they don't even know what populations they will encounter there away when the Egyptian Coast finally appears on the horizon after six weeks at Sea the scholars suffering greatly from the bad weather are forbidden to disembark [Music] it's too dangerous only the soldiers are permitted to land the swell is so strong that vice admiral Perez recommends that the General in Chief delay disembarkation until the following day but Bonaparte rejects this he knows that the English are looking for the French Fleet and that there's no time to waste the scientists look on in a terror made even worse by the darkening sky as a ship transporting some of their instruments Founders on the rocks and sinks the task is slow and hazardous but nothing will stop Bonaparte and 5000 men setting foot on Egyptian soil first objective Alexandria the second biggest city in Egypt [Music] bonapartis had a declaration in French and Arabic printed on board in which he declares he is the son of the prophet and the Revolution come to save the Egyptians from the tyranny of the mamaluks who have controlled the country for five centuries foreign the Egyptians though don't believe a word of it they welcome him with weapons drawn the fort of Alexandria is taken and the French soldiers enter a city that is far less Splendid than they had been anticipating soldiers were very disappointed when they took Alexandria on the 1st of July 1798. what they actually discover is a maze of streets full of filths and wild dogs where disease proliferates the city is hugely impoverished and they are disillusioned having covered the rear by taking Alexandria it's now time to march on Cairo the biggest city in Egypt General kleber had been wounded during the assault on the fort of Alexandria a fervent Republican this former architect earned his generals rank fighting in the revolution clever is a charismatic man and a model for his soldiers citizen General is it your wish that we Converge All Our forces on Cairo not you General clever you must take care of your wound and remain at the Garrison in Alexandria making it our rear Guard base ask Conte what he can do to compensate for the loss of our instruments and have him make weapons we need cannonballs should I accompany you general not immediately you General Manu must take the port in the city of Rosetta coming from the sea another division will head for damieta that way we will control three ports here on the Mediterranean in Lower Egypt then you will join me the task should be a simple one all the civilians and Scholars will accompany you gentlemenu except for Citizens March and batale whom I insist remain with me however you General de Zay you will take charge of opening the route to Cairo and middle Egypt if we take Cairo gentlemen Egypt will be ours the best way to do that would seem to be to follow the Nile along the damietta tributary and give the mamaluks the chance to organize their defenses no speed is of the essence you will take this route on foot which follows the canal that links Alexandria to Cairo here through the desert if the Army does not move at lightning speed they will perish we will never find enough water for a thousand thirsty men it is the shortest route you leave tomorrow to say General duse is an aristocrat dedicated to his country and to the General in Chief excellent in combat a brilliant mine and a cultured man he is very much appreciated by Bonaparte the Expedition is divided in two while the majority of the scholars and artists head for Rosetta most of the army heads into the desert [Music] the soldiers are prepared to fight but not for what they must now face each step is dragged through burning sand and the air is stifling in the lungs dressed in wool in the oppressive heat the soldiers don't even have water bottles and only sheer will drives them on [Music] but these men would never disobey an order from Bonaparte however impetuous it may seem foreign [Music] [Music] students in Parisian lecture rooms than being on the ground these eminent Scholars are not expecting such a trial foreign the Desert Sands traveled by the French troops are left littered with the corpses of soldiers not up to the challenge then they finally reach the banks of the Nile [Music] many throw themselves in the river fully clothed so thirsty are they some even drown thank you far from the Army's suffering in Rosetta the scholars and artists have found refuge in a lush environment where there's plenty of food and water [Music] away from the fighting they're left to their own devices as Bonaparte has other more pressing matters to attend to the scholars and artists explore their surroundings with no military escort looking for anything novel whatever the subject roundings ah what better gift could we give ourselves you're absolutely right tonight it's simply marvelous it's like heaven on Earth I don't know where to look there are so many exotic species to discover the fish the Lemurs the birds I'm already one over likewise I couldn't resist trying to reproduce this Eden won't you take a look scare it away santileer lover of geology and animal species succumbs to the exoticism of this land [Music] quick come and see this foreign judging by the size of its finger this buried statue is of gigantic proportions it could be an Isis for the artist Dwayne of the Expedition Rosetta on the fertile banks of the Nile is a fascinating Terrain in which to explore his artistic talents [Music] the first discovery after the disappointment of Alexandria is in the region around Rosetta dunon discovers the fist of Isis and the scholars all go wild about it Scholars and artists are fascinated by everything they see and everything they discover they're curious men there to decipher Egypt and they get down to work right away once rested and refreshed the French soldiers continue on their way Marching for 12 hours every day but in mbabe the mamalukes who represent ottoman power bar their root into Cairo just as the pyramids can be glimpsed in the distance [Music] Mama looks are former slaves most of whom hailed from the Caucasus and who converted to Islam and have been emancipated they govern Egypt but in actual fact the mamaloo princes are fighting for power among themselves when Bonaparte arrived in Egypt Two Princes governed the country they reign in Egypt in the name of the Ottoman sultan is Murad Bay's troops are in the front line against the French those of Ibrahim Bay are in reserve to the east facing forces twice as powerful as his own Bonaparte comes up with a tactical Innovation he uses the Infantry Square technique each division forms a square of two thousand men in between two and six tight rows in the center the civilians generals and baggage are protected [Music] Bonaparte organizes his army in five squares before him a Murad Bay's forces 30 000 infantry men and 10 000 Horsemen disease Square takes on the first assault they greet the mama looks with salvos of fire at point-blank range foreign Fighters trained to use Sabers in hand-to-hand combat they launched their charge with Panache at the same time Bonaparte and the other squares close in on Murad Bay's flanks the mama looks around a fire on two sides foreign [Music] the Infantry squares are as unwavering as they are destructive and the pride of the mamaluk Army is destroyed by the bayonets of the French Infantry Bonaparte loses just 30 soldiers while mamalu classes are in the region of some 20 000 men for reasons of prestige this Victory is later named by Bonaparte the battle of the pyramids nonetheless the two great mamaluk Chiefs managed to escape Ibrahim Bay to the north and Murad Bay to the South and the deserts of Upper Egypt Cairo the biggest city in Egypt falls to the French occasion is extremely important just like it is nowadays he wants to make a big statement by entering Cairo so he organizes a grandiose event everyone is in full uniform and in front of the population which is about several hundred thousand he gives a performance of the hero entering the capital of the Pharaohs when he enters Cairo it's a culture shock in two ways discovering the Egyptian people and seeing just how difficult it will be for them to live in this country Bonaparte wants to reassure the Egyptians and to administer Egypt so he quickly has to form some kind of council a Divan and he brings together the main nobility the ulama of Cairo Bonaparte comes to conquer Egypt to the Egyptians he's a colonizer not a liberator nonetheless it's thanks to his Publications and the work of those Scholars that the Egyptians ReDiscover their own egyptianness one should not forget that the Ottoman Empire erased the word Egypt from history the national identity was literally wiped out Egypt had become a village an ottoman province foreign 's entire lives were contained within their measuring instruments and sketchbooks now for the first time they're faced with a new world [Music] two weeks after bonaparte's triumphant entry into Cairo the Bay of abukir between Alexandria and Rosetta becomes the theater for a dramatic Clash and that our Fleet anchored out there I thought that they were at the Old Port of Alexandria it would seem that the waters aren't deep enough they're firing at them the English are attacking us alas we were bound to run into them but have no fear our Fleet is under the command advice Edward Breyers unexperienced man we have the same age he will easily defeat the enemy our ships seem to be immobile unlike the enemies whatever General Manus says look on helplessly as the first cannon fire announces the start of a tragedy the English have discovered the French Fleet that has been evading them for months Admiral Nelson who had vowed to defeat Bonaparte splits his Fleet in two and one half manages to slip into the free space between the coast and the French ships [Music] the French vessels firmly chained to one another under the orders of their Admiral must fight at anchor [Music] during the battle of the Nile a dramatic event takes place amid so many other dramatic events the flagship of the French Fleet the Orient explodes the Orient was one of the biggest finest and most powerful ships in the world and at its first battle it is blown apart the explosion was so loud and of such a force that it is said that the battle stopped for about 15 minutes and everybody just was like in a State of Shock this huge explosion that left everybody uh a bit dazed it's a tragedy citizen kante not at all General clever we will be able to fight back we must face facts tomorrow we will no longer have a fleet and with no Fleet we will be prisoners in Egypt clever is right after the battle of the Nile there is no hope of return they need a new Fleet but France doesn't have a substitute Fleet to come and fetch the Army from Egypt the Battle of abakir is is obviously a huge huge success and one which Nelson will indeed make uh to his credit he becomes Baron of the Nile because of this battle of the nylon he has a crocodile on his on his um on his coat of arms Bonaparte was only supposed to examine the possibility of establishing a French presence in Egypt now he has no choice but to start establishing it right away [Music] is a very positive moment for the Egyptian people Bonaparte believes he has to create a permanent presence in Egypt and he quickly sets to building workshops and Roads and creating modern hospitals like those in France the Egyptians go from Barber surgeons to modern medicine while Bonaparte is organizing the country's Administration tax system Etc he is reorganizing his army making it functional again and calling more upon the scholars citizens I have brought you here at dawn with the aim of founding an institution for the sciences and the Arts similar to that which we have in France and how do you imagine a general to begin with citizen Marsh we will improve the construction of local ovens so the Army has good bread like in France and we must absolutely find a product that can replace hops in the manufacture of beer essential for our soldiers and what about the water that has caused so much intestinal upset I am counting on you to clarify and refresh the water of the Nile and on you Conte to procure the necessary resources to produce gunpowder will we have other missions all those of a center for Research into contemporary and ancient Egypt you may study the fauna in this country but more than that I'm counting on your help to improve our establishment here and contribute to the development of applied sciences in this country since they were exiled by Barbers that will allow me to explore the numerous ophthalmological and health problems to which we are exposed and either local procedures for making Indigo or even ammonium citizens above all else you must take care of drawing up the regulations in the field [Music] our first session will be tomorrow morning at seven o'clock gentlemen [Music] the Egyptian Institute aims to grow and propagate the enlightenment in Egypt and to research study and publish on natural industrial and historical matters it has four departments mathematics physics political economics and literature in the Arts Bonaparte requisitions several contiguous palaces to create a kind of Science Center with Laboratories and so the Egyptian Institute is created with the mathematician Mars is its first president and Bonaparte himself as vice president since he considers himself to be a scholar I would have loved to have been a member of The Institute in order to live in this superb Palace I quite understand we're enjoying wonderful peace here indeed it's even better appointed and I think it's even more magnificent here than in the Louvre there's everything here isn't there we're so lucky it's all freely available and there will soon be an observatory and a chemistry laboratory offices for Natural History physics mineralogy and even rooms dedicated to archeology we don't have such like Dewey indeed our work is extremely monotonous we only really have one occupation to measure the Nile we are surveyors granted but from Alexandria to Cairo that's all we've done and I'm sick of all this water always water you see little else don't be disheartened my friend soon though we'll be exploring the remains of the former Canal that link the Mediterranean to the Red Sea it dates from the times of the Pharaohs you would go north while I aspire to head south I didn't come to Egypt to be satisfied with just Cairo no I want to explore a land that shrouded in a veil of mystery that for two thousand years has been unexplored by any European Upper Egypt not only is Bonaparte organizing the work of the scholars in Cairo he's also trying to play Down the defeat in Abu Kia Bay by dazzling the Egyptians he assures them once again that he doesn't simply respect their religion he's fascinated by it Islam is a major issue for Bonaparte and the entire French army during the occupation of the country for the three years at the Egyptian Expedition lasts he realizes that Islam is part of the daily lives of Egyptians in meetings with the scholars and the ulima of the divan discusses the possibility of converting to Islam [Music] Bonaparte celebrates the birth of the Prophet for four days with unprecedented magnificence on the banks of the Nile in front of the French army Chiefs and all the city's public figures the French troops parade with great pomp to impress the Egyptians [Music] are not convinced by what Bonaparte and his Entourage say these orientalists make grammatical errors in Arabic the sacred language the language of the prophet there is both suspicion and rejection a rejection the scale of which the French take a long time to realize to such an extent that villier and joloire don't think twice about heading off to sleep alone in the desert with no escort so eager are they to take part in an extraordinary visit organized by Bonaparte foreign [Music] [Music] let's hope we can get down without breaking away incredible did you see more what a feat for a man of his age [Music] just Pebbles and not an animal in sight shame this is amazing what a wonderful Monument hey wait I'm coming down very well young man this pyramid tell me its Secrets citizen General the Great Pyramid of Giza has 207 layers platforms included we applied a ruler to each Riser and have estimated it measures at least 137 meters high certainly know your business for such a young fella Heaven's above come on the man's an acrobat most Try Not To Break Your Neck something amazing happens in the Cairo desert at the foot of the Great Pyramid what we believe to be the world's first archaeological dig is established there are Scholars from a wide range of disciplines Architects surveyors and others studying the Great Pyramid first of all measuring it something to drink while we wait for citizen moms to join us huh with pleasure such an immense volume and such Harmony of proportions these pyramids outshine everything around are you happy now better than water measurements it's magnificent here drink before you speak ah thank you General Bonaparte hmm yes thank you from up there you understand that man wished to rival nature in terms of immensity and Eternity if you permit I'd like to show you inside [Music] this way General would you you will see how extraordinary the interior is and how it gives rise to some very interesting observations but it's worth the f you see a ramp leading to the center of the structure [Music] General after you now go and tell the soldiers to engrave the names of our officers who died in combat inside the pyramid in a very visible place to honor them for posterity [Music] foreign [Music] [Laughter] I'd like to drink something general I have something for you would you mind villier there's a little shed at the end of the courtyard inside beneath a large wooden crate I've hidden a few nice bottles is my own personal store I'll go with him have you heard the rumors no letters from Ibrahim Bay announcing the imminent arrival of the Ottoman Army the Turks declared war as soon as they heard about the naval disaster in abokia Bay they think we are weak and are preparing to walk all over us oh no oh no if that's true all of the scholars work will have been for nothing let's be optimistic now we are commanded by a general who has never known defeat since the disaster in abuke obey the situation has changed for the French the anglo-turkish alliance is a real danger but it's not the only threat in Cairo the locals who have seemingly until now accepted the presence of the French are less and less happy with their impiety and this forbidden wine that's growing increasingly popular around the city [Laughter] oh which one should we take uh wait ah show me that one this one yes that's right oh [Music] there are four of us so I think we should take four uh two two [Music] presence is requested Lieutenant Morel second infantry Brigade General there is an uprising in the city we must hurry to organize the defense of this Villa what do you mean in our prize the people of Cairo are in the street and they want the French out of the city any victims already around 100 dead General hurry Morrell give them two rifles most this way I've never fired a gun before I wouldn't know how to use it look it's easy Soldiers the cartridge you take your gun you push the flash pan put a little gunpowder in it then close it you tip the cartridge into the barrel and pack it twice now all you need to do is aim and fire and if you miss use the bayonet everyone onto the Terrace [Music] [Applause] don't worry video it will be fine you haven't lost everything yet let's hope we still get to drink it you must not lose hope concentrate and act at the right moment [Applause] [Music] ready careful nobody shoot unless it's on my orders [Music] through Freon quickly hurry up hurry up big left hand barricade the staircase foreign [Music] well it seems that our time has come does anyone imagine themselves dying in combat when they're just 20. [Music] reveals any emotions after his first shot foreign of Their scientist colleagues lose their lives in the uprising along with 300 soldiers [Music] [Music] Bonaparte no longer wishes to win over the inhabitants of Cairo with his religious tolerance and respect for tradition he cuts the city off and with an iron fist imposes military rule foreign [Music] the Eastern commentator writes overnight the French entered the city's streets and Alleyways like a flood of devils and Bonaparte closes his eyes to all the vandalism and the pillaging foreign is a real shock for our two young scholars in one Fell Swoop they go from their Egyptian dream to the reality of war and from civilians who have come to bring Enlightenment to enemy forces this Uprising begins in the neighborhood of the alasar mosque the biggest mosque in Cairo Bonaparte is forced to crack down with great violence starts by bombarding the al-azhar neighborhood before entering the mosque with weapons and horses and desecrating it the French will never be forgiven for this it's like a stale something snaps during this Insurrection that Bonaparte manages to re-establish order in Egypt order is established but the peace remains fragile as the two mamaluk chiefs defeated at the Battle of the pyramids are still on the run with some of their troops Ibrahim Bay in the north towards Syria and Murad Bay to the south in Upper Egypt with General dessert on his heels thank you [Music] for five months I have been chasing down Murad Bay and this mad Pursuit has led us all the way back up the Nile Valley over more than 500 kilometers every encounter with the mamalukes has seen as victorious in the bloodied Sands of the desert and still the cursed Murad Bay evades us I will never let Bae rest and I will destroy him in whichever country he takes Refuge [Music] Upper Egypt with its archaeological splendors is so impatient to discover the region that despite the danger he goes out of his way to obtain authorization to accompany desert please citizen dinner please calm down how can I General dizzy I dare sit down as my back and backside hurts so much and I'm so stiff I feel I'll never get up again Crossing Upper Egypt with almost no time for rest has exhausted me yeah ah ah what a Pity if our bivouac had been closer to that Temple I'd have at least seen a ruin at close hand even at night too dangerous I promise that when we have finished with Moran Bay I will provide you with the necessary means for your work has invaded us for months and I spent my days on Horseback barely ever dismounting very unsuitable position for drawing look at this not a single straight line you can redo it all properly once we return to Cairo if we ever return that is [Music] after more weeks in Pursuit always taking them further south Daze reaches Aswan taking it after a battle that once again sees him Victorious over the mamaluks and once again Murad Bay evades him with the arrival of the French in Aswan in Upper Egypt we can consider that the conquest of Egypt is complete even if there are some recalcitrant Villages even if Murad Bay and Ibrahim Bay are still on the Run hiding and evading the French still control the entire Nile Valley well almost Bonaparte learns from his spies that 50 000 men Ottomans and mamaluks with the help of the English are gathering in Syria taking the initiative to attack seems to be the best option if I succeed I will find the pasha's treasures and arms for a hundred thousand men in the city of Saint John of acre I will then rise up and arm Syria I will overturn the Turkish Empire and found a great new Empire in the orient that will see my name go down in history [Music] despite facing some serious military issues Bonaparte still hasn't forgotten one of his missions to consider the construction of a canal as a shorter alternative to the English route to the Indus in his March towards Syria he chooses to cross the old Canal of the Pharaohs on which villier and jolawar are finally working I don't understand the figures from the committee that carried out the first readings ours gave such different results there must be a mistake somewhere you know that we were really careful with each reading and I'm convinced of that yet I'm Amazed by these numbers well gentlemen will we have our canal one day citizen General if we redo the calculations we have those of the commission estimate that the Red Sea is nine meters higher than the Mediterranean which makes no sense at all with such a difference in height it would be impossible to construct a canal without locks but all the digs carried out on the site of the old Canal from the time of the Pharaohs show that there were no locks so we build the canal it will involve huge excavations and years of hard work but yes in general the Suez Canal is possible thanks to your work gentlemen England will soon lose its trade with the Indies France will thank you for that I wish you well [Music] despite being undertaken in a rush the Syria campaign begins successfully Bonaparte takes the fort of el arish where the second mamaluk Chief Ibrahim Bay has taken Refuge yet manages once again to escape Bonaparte then Marches On Gaza where a second Victory awaits him the next step will be Jaffa [Music] thirteen thousand French soldiers reached Jaffa after another desperate March through the desert spurred on by Bonaparte who is convinced this new Expedition will be victorious and indeed Victory Smiles upon him a single assault launched at dawn is enough for Jaffa to Fall by the afternoon [Music] eight months after first setting foot on Egyptian soil Bonaparte marches victoriously into Syria this new military Expedition promises to enjoy better fortunes [Music] and as for the scientists now they're fulfilled finally allowed to travel to Upper Egypt of which they have dreamed for so long [Music] they head for the peaceful South in search of ancient Marvels and Mysteries that will show to the whole world the greatness of ancient Egypt foreign
