The Story & Ending of Melody of Memory Explained

hearts 3's reminds dlc left off if you'd like a quick refresher of how we got there please watch my racing video catching you up on the plot of kingdom hearts 3 and remind sora has vanished after committing the taboos of nature that allowed him to override the timeline in which he and his friends were defeated creating a new timeline in which light won the day the various guardians of light attempted to find sora by searching different locations kyrie's idea was to voluntarily enter a state of sleep and try to search her memories for any signs of sora and that is exactly what the gameplay of melody of memory is about kyrie re-experiencing the entire kingdom hearts saga so far that she might plausibly have knowledge about as she dives further and further into her memories she is eventually confronted with a memory that she had long since forgotten when kyrie was a young girl living in radiant garden she had been rescued by aqua from some unversed by the conclusion of kingdom hearts birth by sleep terra's heart had been eclipsed by master xehanort's from within his own body and the man now knew very little about who he even was save for his name he was brought in as an apprentice by anthem the wise and began researching into the mysteries of darkness and the heart into one day experimenting on himself and unlocking some of master xehanort's lingering memories one day he opened the door to radiant garden's keyhole allowing the heartless to invade the peaceful world and begin to consume it it is here that we see kyrie's lost memory her fleeing from the heartless only to be captured by apprentice xehanort and placed into a pod part of a large machine that was first seen in kingdom hearts 1. this is the same style of machine that has also been seen in union cross and the basic concept is that the occupants will be jettisoned out of their world at extremely high speeds letting them travel great distances between worlds and allowing them to survive the vast darkness that keeps each world separated however without the proper protection on the pods the occupants will not be shielded from the ravages of the light speed travel and their body will be stripped away leaving nothing but a heart according to darkness the advantage to this is that an unencumbered heart will have the ability to travel through time and maleficent recently utilized this technique to return to her own time in kingdom light's uni grass bakari was not the travel through time zayanov believed her to be a princess of heart and hoped that by sending her out from radiant garden that her heart would resonate with that of the keyblade wielders and she could be sent to their world perhaps it was arque's blessing that carried curry to destiny islands a place that artwork considered safe and peaceful from her brave time there with two boys that were the spitting image of tara and van that might make great friends for the young girl but zaynon's reason for doing all of this is expanded upon here he is doing this because he believes his world their world is doomed and the only way to save it is to find this keyblade wielder placing curry in her pod and sending her out into the world is a symbol of hope something that reminds me of another vessel said to contain hope the black box but xehanort warns that if kyrie does not find herself in one of the worlds we know in a world that is neither light nor darkness then she must abandon her search we have failed this is further compounding xehanort's entire reason for being as a character but to explain what he is talking about we must first continue with melody of memory story kyrie traces her memories further and further back to her most recent memories of spending time with sora in the final world finding six of the seven pieces of heart that she was split into drinking demands three but she is approached by a version of master zea naught from her memories who taunts her and says that she has already long forgotten the only memories that she could find here that might be of any use to her curry attacks the old master and though she uses her cunning to get a few surprise attacks in the experienced master soon gains the upper hand in much the same way that memory enemies could still very much hurt sora and riku in chain of memories xehanort is about to strike a defenseless kyrie when suddenly the kingdom key appears in her hand to block the attack sora is somehow able to take control of kyrie even forcing his appearance onto her in order to defend her from xehanort after defeating xehanort once more he rewards kyrie with the chance to hear what she had heard all those years ago once more and reverts back through his incarnations so that apprentice xehanort can tell her the message one more time this is all information that was etched into kyrie's heart kingdom hearts as a series has always enforced the idea over and over again that memories cannot be destroyed and in this sense curry is only forging a new pathway to information that she already had it's not like xehanort is returning from the grave to tell her this with occludosaurus whereabouts in hand carrie awakens to find that a year has passed in real time and relays what she learns to ants from the wise enzo and evan ants from the wise postulates that xehanort was referring to a world completely separate from any that have been known in the kingdom hearts universe and very quickly comes to the conclusion that if they all exist in reality then a world on the complete other side of that reality would be unreality fiction riku enters having just finished his time spent investigating organization 13's data in sid's computer and the fairy godmother enders as well revealing that they now have the three keys needed to start looking for sora riku streams kyrie's memories and the final piece are all that were necessary riku streams were of course shown in the kingdom hand's three secret ending where he saw himself among a large city that we might recognize as shinjuku a ward of tokyo that neighbours the world of shibuya that sora woke up in vexin and enzo wonder if this city might be the fictional world that xehanort was referring to and then some otherwise clarifies that there are three realms that comprise the kingdom hearts universe light darkness and the realm between within those realms sub-realms can exist as well such as memory data and dreams but if one were to be on the complete opposite side of this reality that all these characters know then they must be somewhere that is unreal somewhere fictional the fairy godmother takes kyrie and riku to make the third key and the unlikely trio arrive in the actual final world though the friends initially do not see anyone there once they look closer they are greeted by the sight of hundreds if not thousands of spirits that still cling to this world refusing to move on to death appearing as translucent stars eventually the trio tracks down the star they are looking for the same star that sora had met during his brief period in the final world during the events of kingdom hearts 3. it's interesting that the star remembers who sora is despite sora going back in time to override the events of his own death indicating that the final world may be temporarily immune to any time travel shenanigans the star is initially hesitant but soon trusts kairi riku and the fairy godmother when they mention sora's name the fairy godmother seems to know a lot about the star revealing to riku and kyrie that the star came from the opposite world that her body was taken from her and that if she were to return to her world her heart would be taken as well we had already been told this in kingdom hearts 3 as the star confided in sora that she dreamed that someone would come for her but the person she was hoping would come for her had been physically changed beyond recognition and his heart had been replaced by another's however if that person was to regain his old self again and learn she had disappeared he would certainly try to come and rescue her that person's name was of course yo zora leading many people to believe that the star's initial appearance may have been this girl from the verumrex teaser trailer earlier in the game and in the time being a lot of fans are calling her stella after the character that received a design and character change to become lunar as final fantasy vs 13 became fun of fantasy 15. i feel sorry for anyone jumping on this train just now i imagine that the fairy godmother knows all of this because well dreams are her specialty and just like with cinderella the fairy godmother appears before those with strong dreams and does what she can to aid them though not without restrictions and she cannot completely solve their problems the fairy godmother says that she would restore the star's body if she could however she lacks the power to do so but nevertheless she hopes that she can soon make the stars a dream come true after riku explains that they believe that sora lies in a city full of tall buildings the star offers that the city with the most skyscrapers that she knows is a city called quadratum the fairy godmother can't be sure that's exactly where sora is but it certainly is possible and it's the only lead they have for now so the star allows riku to use her as a portal summoning a pink gate to quadratum just as xehanort was used as a portal to sculler at kylem kyrie hopes to go with riku as well but riku shows hesitation and kyrie disappointedly concedes that she is still inexperienced and not a keyblade master yet agreeing to return to tell yan sid and mickey what had happened and more importantly complete her training so that she can come and help riku activates the portal and a beam of light is shot interestingly up into the sky gathering the clouds and sending him outside the kingdom hearts universe i say the beam of light shooting up into the sky is interesting because it's in contrast to the portal opened up in the floor when sorry uses the power of waking to travel backwards in time clearly showing that riku is going somewhere outside this universe i'll do a whole video on contradam itself after more people have had the chance to play the game but quadratum here can refer to many things if we concede that the places sora and riku have both been seen in are based on the real world tokyo wards of shibuya and shinjuku then perhaps we can start looking there for clues about quadratum tokyo itself is apparently the city with the sixth most skyscrapers in the world above 150 meters and of the 157 skyscrapers within the prefecture of tokyo itself shinjuku and monato are two wards that each hold a significant amount of those skyscrapers so it's possible that the standing name for shinjuku maybe even shibuya or perhaps even tokyo itself may be quadratum i'll get into it more in the video itself but of course quadratum is the latin word for square further complicating the meta narrative given that of course kingdom hearts is a square enix developed game so kyrie returns to yensid's tower and as donald and goofy tackle mickey to prevent him from chasing after riku yen said urges for calm and thought out planning he surmises that because this information about this fictional world came from when kyrie was a child and zeynot was a researcher he must have known about these worlds for quite some time yen sid recalls that when he was still an active keyblade master it was apparently known that the ancient keyblade masters had crossed over into another world perhaps saying lord had been caught by that notion and had investigated the world that they had vanished to leading him to his discovery about these fictional worlds but now that saying not has passed they need to find some other way of finding these answers evidently what has been confirmed here is that the foretellers seem to have not died in the keyblade war but instead vanished to these fictional worlds after the clash it's interesting then that once the keyblade war had concluded in modern times blue shield was able to summon them back for whatever purpose he needed them for next donald and goofy are to return to everyone in radiant garden the land of departure and twilight town to inform them of what has been learned the implication i read from this is that terra van and aqua have returned from the realm of darkness to the land of departure which i guess was never directly confirmed but you could assume in remind given that riku isn't hopeful that they will return from the realm of darkness with news he says they went and aerith is saddened that there has been no progress perhaps though we will get more games detailing their adventure in the realm of darkness as well as learning what the twilight town gang have been up to in the past year whether easter and lee have made any headway into their search for subject x or for that matter whether lorium and el reyno have made any progress with stralizia so while donald and goofy are informing the others kyrie will continue her training choosing master aqua to study under i can't imagine reiki's journey is going to go smoothly zainod himself said that if you find yourself in another world that is neither light nor darkness you need to abandon your search we have failed and riku is about to walk head first into this other world it may take the strength that kyrie has master kyrie has to bring both riku and sora back safely and mickey will start searching for the information that zayn not uncovered about the unreal worlds starting his search in scala ad kylem and that is everything directly covered in the meldive memory story itself i'm sure you have a ton of questions and i have so much to expand upon about the idea of fictional worlds how xano learned about them the method sora used to reach curry and the meta narrative of what it is to be a player of games and how this connects outwardly to adjacent video game series but each of these deserves their own video i'm going to try my absolutely best to make each one shorter so that you
