play his arm strength is unrivaled his athleticism is unnatural his creativity is boundless his fearlessness is unwavering football has never known a quarterback so prodigiously talented and never before has a qb so young reached such lofty heights before turning 25 he was an mvp and a super bowl champion with the largest contract in the history of north american pro sports less than a half decade after getting drafted it's already a foregone conclusion that he's going to cement himself as one of the greatest quarterbacks ever to play the game the only question is how soon [Music] this is the story behind patrick mahomes [Music] patrick mahomes was born september 17 1995 in tyler texas and came into the world blessed with a wealth of genetic gifts his father pat was then in the midst of an 11 year career as a major league pitcher and it became clear early in patrick's life that he had inherited his dad's electric throwing arm plus by spending his formative years running around big league clubhouses patrick whose godfather as it happens is 21-year mlb veteran latroy hawkins picked up practices and enjoyed access to expertise that would eventually transform him into an athletic phenom by the age of five patrick was already doing long toss with his dad methodically developing his arm strength before most kids had even picked up a baseball or a football for the first time by the time he was 10 even the mahomes expansive backyard was too small for patrick's incredible right arm by that point he could throw a baseball over the outfield fence from home plate a distance of more than 200 feet and eventually patrick and his father had to start tossing at the baseball diamond and then the football field patrick was an exceptional multi-sport athlete excelling on the baseball diamond the gridiron and the hard court and whenever anyone inquired as to which sport he most preferred the youngster would reply whatever's in season by the time mahomes arrived at white house high school however baseball was his primary focus he saw himself during his adolescent years as a baseball player that was playing football and seemed destined to follow in his father's footsteps as a high schooler mahomes was a two-way star on the diamond throwing gas on the mound while also playing shortstop and hitting in the middle of whitehouse's lineup by 17 mahomes was peaking the interest of mlb scouts impressing them with a fastball that reached the mid-90s memorably in his senior year mahomes threw a 16 strikeout no hitter out dueling current big league pitcher michael kopeck in front of a gaggle of scouts and it was abundantly clear to everyone in attendance that this kid had big league potential the only problem was that mahomes had also started to excel at football named white house's starting quarterback in his junior season despite only getting his first crack at the position the year prior mahomes thrived tormenting opponents with his ridiculous arm strength impressive mobility and his uncanny ability to make any and every kind of throw a gift incidentally that mahomes attributes to all those reps at shortstop throwing on the run and across his body and all those minutes on the basketball court making no-look passes his style may have been unorthodox and his footwork wasn't necessarily elegant at all times but mahomes was unstoppable nevertheless as a junior mahomes threw 46 touchdowns and averaged nearly 320 passing yards per game opening eyes across the state including in lubbock texas home of the texas tech red raiders mahomes was the perfect fit for texas tech's pass heavy system and mahomes was himself enamored by the opportunity to play baseball and football at a decorated big 12 school and in the spring of 2013 10 months before he was even eligible to sign a letter of intent mahomes announced his commitment to texas tech a commitment he honored even after the detroit tigers selected him in the 37th round of the 2014 mlb draft the big leagues weren't going anywhere mahomes reckoned and he still envisioned going pro as a baseball player once his time at texas tech was up as it turned out though he was about to get thrown a curveball during the second half of his freshman season with the red raiders football team mahomes was thrust into starting duty after davis webb went down with an injury and the big armed teenager never looked back mahomes started each of texas tech's last four games in 2014 and immediately made it clear how uniquely gifted he was throwing for more than 1500 yards and 16 touchdowns including a record-breaking 598 yard six touchdown performance against the top 10 ranked baler by the time spring rolled around the emergent mahomes had already become a mini celebrity on campus and the two sports standout was greeted to a standing ovation when he made his first pitching appearance for texas tech's baseball team on february 21st 2015. it also happened to be his last pitching appearance for texas tech consumed with his football responsibilities mahomes had barely practiced with the baseball team that year and his body was considerably bulkier than it had been when he was dazzling those big league scouts back in high school when he took the mound for his texas tech debut mahomes the baseball player was unrecognizable he couldn't throw a strike to save his life i came into the game i i walked the first guy i believe uh hit the second guy and gave up a double and they scored a run and then i got taken out of the game so uh that was my i think i have like an infinity era which isn't a probably good one um but uh yeah that that's not something that i'm very proud to have on my my record but that dreadful outing marked a turning point for mahomes who knew conclusively from that moment what he was supposed to do with his mighty right arm he was supposed to be a quarterback entrusted with the qb1 job for his sophomore season mahomes continued to make strides upping his efficiency and getting better at creating offense with his legs while continuing to flummox defenses and dazzle spectators with his passing prowess in his first full season as a starter mahomes finished fourth in the nation in passing yards and tied for sixth in passing touchdowns while also rushing for another 10 scores following his breakout sophomore campaign mahomes officially gave up baseball to focus on football his junior season was even more impressive mahomes led the nation in passing yards while throwing 41 touchdowns and upping his completion percentage for a second straight season that year mahomes recorded 500 plus passing yards in a game four times including his unforgettable performance against baker mayfield in oklahoma in which mahomes set a new fbs single game record with 734 passing yards for his efforts mahomes earned the sami ba trophy given out annually to the ncaa's top passer and earned a spot on the second team all big 12. more importantly though mahomes had elevated himself into a potential first round nfl draft pick and his showing at the scouting combine where he ran a 4.8 40 yard dash and had his throws clocked at a sizzling 60 miles per hour further illustrated what a rare talent he was yet plenty of nfl teams still had their doubts as talented as he was mahomes didn't fit the mold of a traditional pro quarterback his mechanics were irregular as was his footwork and his proclivity for airing it out with risky seemingly impossible throws made him seem like well a risk and so multiple franchises in desperate need of a quarterback passed on the homes in the first round of the 2017 nfl draft with the second overall pick in fact the chicago bears made mitch trubisky the first qb off the board that year ironically enough it was a team with a perfectly fine quarterback that recognized mahomes franchise altering potential and was determined to snag him the kansas city chiefs had scouted mahomes extensively and as head coach andy reed later put it everybody was in on this kid so after nine teams passed on the homes the chiefs traded up to get their guy the kansas city chiefs select patrick mahomes the second quarterback [Music] it is patrick mahomes the second not to sean watson that was the apple of the reed dorsey eye in kansas city that's the quarterback of the future that they're putting the eggs in the mahomes basket and while they had high hopes for the youngster nobody could have anticipated what mahomes would soon become as a rookie mahomes served as backup to alex smith the veteran qb who had guided kansas city to 12 wins and a division title the season prior as it happens smith was even better in 2017 leading the nfl in qb rating and so mahomes spent most of his inaugural season holding a clipboard and wowing his teammates with his ungodly arm strength that made his pre-game warm-ups must-see tv it wasn't until week 17 after the chiefs had clinched a playoff spot that mahomes got his first taste of nfl action making his long-awaited debut on december 31 2017 against the denver broncos and while the stakes were relatively low his debut was nevertheless momentous marking the first time in nearly four decades that the chiefs had started a rookie at quarterback it was an auspicious debut too fittingly his first nfl completion on his first nfl drive went for 51 yards emma homes kept rolling from there throwing for 284 yards on 63 passing to lead kansas city to a 27-24 victory he didn't exactly like the world on fire but mahomes performance coupled with another early post-season exit effectively kick-started a new era in kansas city after the chiefs were eliminated in the wild card round kansas city traded smith to washington and put the franchise in mahomes hands it was show time to say mahomes hit the ground running in his first year as kansas city's starting quarterback would be a massive understatement in the 2018 season opener mahomes just over a week shy of his 23rd birthday threw for four touchdowns against the san diego chargers leading kansas city to a 38-28 upset with a commanding performance that put the nfl on notice for his efforts he was named the afc's offensive player of the week and he was just getting warmed up the following week mahomes threw for six touchdowns to propel the chiefs past the pittsburgh steelers landing himself a second straight afc offensive player of the week nod and earning a boatload of historical distinctions in the process never before had a qb thrown 10 touchdown passes over the first two games of the regular season never before had a quarterback thrown more than 8 touchdown passes through the first three games of his career already mahomes was must-see tv and the chiefs whose pre-season super bowl odds were plus 3 000 had been transformed into a legitimate threat and mahomes just kept on rolling racking up touchdowns and passing yards at a historic pace it wasn't until week five that mahomes threw his first interception of the season it wasn't until week 10 that my homes logged fewer than 250 passing yards he had 249 for the record meanwhile mahomes recorded five more four touchdown games including another six touchdown performance in a wild week 11 loss to the los angeles rams stepping up into the pocket being chased fires laid it's caught by conley in the end zone touchdown cans on the city he wasn't just putting up one of the most impressive campaigns by a first-year starter mahomes was authoring one of the most dominant seasons by a quarterback in nfl history he finished the season with a whopping 50 passing touchdowns by far the most in the league and five shy of the single season record mahomes also joined hall of famer peyton manning as the only quarterbacks ever to throw 50 touchdowns and at least 5 000 yards in a single season not surprisingly mahomes received almost every accolade imaginable for his historic campaign taking home the mvp and offensive player of the year award while earning himself a pro bowl nod and first team all-pro honors the only trophy he didn't get his hands on in 2018 was the lombardi trophy after demolishing the indianapolis colts in the divisional round the chiefs were bested by tom brady and the new england patriots in the afc championship game falling 37-31 in overtime to his credit though after being held scoreless through halftime mahomes threw for three touchdowns in the second half to erase a 14-point deficit and eventually force ot ultimately it was an agonizing end to mahomes sensational season one made worse by a couple questionable replay review decisions late in the game but the burgeoning superstar took the defeat in stride right now mahome said afterward it's the end but hopefully it's just the beginning and indeed it was naturally expectations were sky high for the chiefs and their reigning mvp coming into 2019 but the pressure didn't seem to phase them mahomes picked up right where he left off the season prior throwing for 10 touchdowns and nearly 1200 yards through the campaign's first three games eventually earning himself afc player of the month honors for september six weeks into the season the chiefs were four and two mahomes was cooking and the franchise looked poised for another deep playoff run and though a scary knee injury forced mahomes from his team's week 7 victory over the denver broncos the resilient phenom was back under center three weeks later in his eventual return mahomes threw for three touchdowns and a season-high 446 yards and while mahomes numbers weren't quite so superhuman down the stretch the chiefs also didn't lose a game after week 10 winning each of their last six regular season contests to lock up another division title and the afc's number two seed despite playing only 14 games mahomes still finished in the top 10 in the nfl in passing touchdowns and passing yards and ultimately came in fourth in offensive player of the year voting and as it turned out mahomes had saved his best football for the postseason in the divisional round mahomes turned in his most dominant performance of the year throwing for five touchdowns and 321 yards in a 51-31 drubbing of the houston texans the following sunday with the afc championship on the line mahomes threw for three touchdowns and ran in another to lift kansas ball but they were no match for mahomes who ran in the game's first touchdown himself and eventually orchestrated a sensational legacy-shaping fourth quarter comeback down by 10 with only nine minutes to go mahomes led kansas city all the way down field from their own 17-yard line then hit travis kelsey in the end zone to cut his team's deficit to three and after the chief's defense forced a quick three and out mahomes did it again marching his team into enemy territory from their own 35 before connecting with damien williams on a five yard touchdown that put kansas city ahead for good he's just going to throw it long it is going to use up all the time the game is over and the chiefs kingdom has firmly planted its flag on top of football's highest summit the kansas city chiefs are champions thanks to mahomes singular talent and grace under pressure the chiefs down the 49ers to capture their first super bowl since the afl and nfl officially merged in 1970. predictably mahomes was named super bowl mvp becoming the second youngest player ever to take home the honor meanwhile mahomes also became the youngest player ever with an mvp award and a super bowl ring taking that distinction away from hall of famer emmett smith three years into his career mahomes hadn't merely vindicated kansas city's decision to trade up for him rather he had the franchise flirting with dynasty status had solidified himself as one of the faces of the game and the prototypical dual threat passer and had positioned himself as a future inner circle hall of famer his potential for all-time legend status wasn't lost on kansas city months after their victory in super bowl 54 the chief syma homes to a 10-year contract extension worth up to 503 million dollars the first half billion dollar contract in north american sports history so far that money looks extremely well spent in 2020 mahomes carried kansas city to a franchise record 14 wins while leading the nfl in passing yards per game finishing second in adjusted total qb rating and finishing fourth in touchdown passes along the way mahomes became the fastest qb ever to reach 10 000 career passing yards and 100 career passing touchdowns heading into the postseason the chiefs look primed to repeat and become the league's first back-to-back champions since the 0304 patriots the only problem tom brady the chiefs breezed through their first two playoff games capturing a second straight afc championship thanks to more playoff brilliance from mahomes but their bid for a second straight ring would have to go through brady and the revamped tampa bay buccaneers in squaring off against brady in super bowl 55 mahomes not only had a chance to exact some revenge for the 2018 afc championship game but was given a golden opportunity to establish himself unequivocally as the game's top quarterback and a potential threat to brady's goat status once again though brady outclassed mahomes vying for his seventh super bowl ring the 43 year old dismantled kansas city secondary throwing for three touchdowns on 72 passing to lead the bucks to a 31-9 victory meanwhile mahomes looked genuinely out of sorts against tampa's defense failing to score a touchdown for the first time in his pro career the defeat also marked the first time in mahonza's tenure that the chiefs lost by double-digit points for the first time in his career mahomes looked human he promptly went back to work though to remind everyone that he's not in 2021 mahomes dazzled yet again finishing in the top five in the nfl in passing yards and passing touchdowns to propel the chiefs to another division title on route he became the fastest qb to 000 career yards and the second fastest to 150 career passing touchdowns in what was easily his worst season mahomes still dominated and earned a trip to the pro bowl and as the playoffs unfolded the chiefs looked like a super bowl favorite once again mahomes threw for five touchdowns and a first round romp for the steelers they roll to the right side they throw a big man touchdown big man touchdown alec ready nick allegretti with the touchdown reception and against patrick mahomes an all-time national football league record with post-season touchdowns in his first five seasons as allegretty spikes the ball then pushed his team into the afc championship game with a thrilling ot frittered away an 18-point lead before losing in overtime in an uncharacteristic performance mahomes threw two interceptions in the loss and the crest fallen qb naturally put the blame on himself after the game um but i mean i got to be better i mean when you're up 21-3 at one point a game you can't lose it and i mean i put that on myself but once the initial hurt subsided mahomes took to twitter to express his optimism about the future and why shouldn't he be optimistic he's patrick mahones no quarterback in the history of the game owns a higher passer rating no quarterback in the history of the game averaged more passing yards per contest and no quarterback in the history of the game has ever been so accomplished so young he's already a legend and he's only just getting
