[Music] hi everyone I'm dr. Craig Malkin I'm a clinical psychologist and lecturer for Harvard Medical School I'm also the author of rethinking narcissism which is devoted to helping you understand and cope with narcissism and all your relationships and in all the forms it takes and that's one of the reasons I wanted to do is video today because I get asked a lot what is it nurse what is it narcissist what is narcissism what is a narcissistic personality disorder and although that's all throughout my youtube channel I wanted to give you a concise understanding of it just a few minutes so you want to think of narcissism because this is how we it appears to be based on the research you want to think of narcissism as the drive to feel special exceptional or unique to quote University of Washington researcher and psychologist Jonathan Brown and you want to think of narcissism as a trait that exists to some extent in all of us it's measurable as a trait narcissism itself is not a disorder narcissistic personality disorder which I'll get to in a moment is a disorder of narcissism so again think of narcissism as a trait it's on a normal curve that exists to some extent and each of us you want to think of narcissists as people who are addicted to or dependent on the feeling special that is when any of us is brought up in such a way where we don't feel like we can really depend on people and healthy ways turn to them and we're sad scared lonely blue and look to them for mutual care comfort something called attachment security one way people often learn to cope with it for reasons that have to do with how they're raised and and to some extent with genetics and temperament is they turn addictively to feeling special is a kind of self soothing think of it as they use it as kind of a drug to the extent that we can't depend on people we will depend on feeling special it becomes a substitute when that if you will to narcissism or the drive to feel special becomes extreme enough people start to demonstrate that the core of pathological narcissism what I call triple e that is exploitation acting as if the world should just meet our needs no matter what the cost to others entitlement asking and acting as if we should all bend to the will of the person who's extremely narcissistic that would bow down to them and empathy impairment and I want to spend a little time on this one it's empathy impairments in the current DSM the dsm-5 the criteria criterion for narcissistic personality disorder that had to do with empathy used to be in the DSM for North lack of empathy and multiple research studies too many to even go over right now with multiple research studies pointed to the fact that for people with narcissistic personality sorting for that matter for people with personality disorders often their empathy fluctuates it comes and goes for people who are narcissistic you want to think of it as if they're not motivated or they are preoccupied enough with their own needs they're not going to be able to show empathy but they have a capacity and in protect you know and that can make it very confusing if you were in a relationship with them because you know there's gonna be times especially early on you might actually see them even when people get caught up on that idea that they're that the the hallmark of narcissistic personality disorders that are incapable of empathy that can become very confusing so again triple-e exploitation and toddle and empathy impairments as people become addicted to feeling special a lie steal cheat do whatever it takes to get their high if you will however they feel special and there's lots of ways to feel special I go all over over this in detail in rethinking narcissism if you're interested in knowing more about that and I also talked about in other videos but it's one of this one to be brief so there you have it that is the core of pathological narcissism and as what narcissism is and that's how you understand narcissists I hope you enjoyed the video and found it helpful one disclaimer or qualifier I should have said this at the beginning the you don't want to get too caught up in as this person extremely narcissistic or what's going on when you're being abused abuse is one of what I call the three stop signs lots of things Drive abuse not just extreme narcissism somebody who's extremely who struggles with substance abuse can become abusive people who've been abused in the past and their trauma comes up in the form of being triggered so that they end up behaving abusively as the person who abused them did there's lots of reasons so abuse is a stop sign a reason to seek support leaving a relationship I don't want anybody to get too caught up in what's going on diagnostically or someone the first question is are you safe in the relationship so hope you found it helpful if you do give me a thumbs up I'm gonna make plenty more videos I think I'm just gonna squeeze them and do short ones like this from now on thanks and you know share it too if you liked it and I hope you share it across all social media and I'll be back thanks for listening again and I look forward to sharing another video with you [Music] you
