the shortwave bands make interest in listening and there's some really strange and wonderful things out there to listen to but nothing has caused a stir quite like number stations have their secret nobody knows what they do definitively especially when it comes to the content of these coded messages but what the radio Community has done a great job of over the years is cataloging them and piecing them together and making them very easy to spot track and listen to they're being transmitted all day every day by the secret services in the biggest of the world's governments and while we have no idea really what we're listening to it's still great fun to monitor so I sat down for a couple of hours and I wanted to show you the secret Transmissions that I heard in a short space of time which aren't just number stations but they're all military related and I thought I'd record share and tell you about them in the hope that it inspires you to do the same now before we continue and I had to explain this the last time I did a video like this most of the footage you'll see is unrelated to these stations I didn't want to just sweep anything remotely related off Google images and throw them into a video so sit back relax and enjoy some nice antenna stock footage from my archives okay go uniform Yankees to do with Sierra Lima this first station is an American military emergency action message or eam a typical eam message is 30 characters long but can be longer and there are often eams out there over 200 characters long this message is using the call sign overflow and you can often hear them pause before resuming with more there you go Sierra this is nice [Applause] these voice Transmissions are coded messages fed into the HF GCS Network by the US Department of Defense the hfgcs has multiple transmission sites in different countries around the world to ensure that they can cover the entire Globe giving it the name Global Communication System you might hear an echo on the signal tutor propagation delays because of slow landlines and links from satellites going to the multiple widely spread transmission sites that are used for AMS okay thank you Mike period five this is [Applause] this signal comes from the Russian 7 which is believed to be a Russian intelligence agency it runs several prolific number stations such as e07 v07 M12 xpa xpa2 and xpb this is the xpa2 station a digital mode of the Russian 7 family the Transmissions are believed to be emanating from European Russia however what we don't know is what the target is [Music] the station transmits at extremely high power levels allowing it to cover massive distances and the Russian 7 family are believed to be used in experimental digital modes yet to be understood by those not intended to receive these curious signals the signal starts with dual tones and then goes into a sequence of tones known as a 14 tone mfsk or multiple frequency shift keying at the end is some sort of close down or ident and the frequency goes silent [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] this signal is x06 a diplomatic selective core system that transmits on many different frequencies and belongs to Russia it sends a sequence of six different tones in a repeating series for example one five two three four six x06 has three variants that are used to identify different tone patterns and what we're listening to here is x06c a variant where the tones constantly repeat in a rising pattern only [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] an x06 message is an alert for the recipient usually at an embassy that a message is going to be sent this message will usually be on a separate frequency x06 has been active since at least 1970 and is believed to date back further [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] this is the standard variant of the x0c station we just looked at what we do know is the x06 broadcasts are made solely by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Moscow each tone sequence uniquely identifies a single Russian diplomatic Mission and in turn has its own group of frequencies the sequence here is two five six one three four and the frequency is 19611 kilohertz so we can tell that the signal is intended for the Russian Embassy in abujan on the Ivory Coast [Applause] [Music] [Applause] while x06 is being broadcast Moscow is waiting for the embassy in abujan to initiate a link once the link is made full duplex Communications can commence on a different frequency foreign [Music] this is the Polish 11 number station but it doesn't transmit numbers that you or I can hear the operator the Polish intelligence agency uses a custom modem to Broadcast Digital messages what we're hearing here is the p03k variant which uses binary phase shift keying or pbsk and is being transmitted from this modish radio transmitter site in rural Countryside just north of Warsaw in Poland foreign and finally this Mammoth signal is John short for the jindalee operational radar Network Jon is a connected series of three remote Over the Horizon Radars located in Queensland the Northern Territory and Western Australia foreign [Applause] [Music] radar systems were developed from the 1950s as part of the early warning radar systems in many countries and although many have been replaced by Airborne early Warning Systems oth Radars have been starting to make a comeback [Applause] so I hope this inspired you to get on the radio and take a listen there's actually so much out there not all of it is clandestine female voices reading numbers but if you listen and learn where stations are you'll be sure to catch them especially at night perfect shot [Music]
