again getting back to the comment you said that you don't like to fly commercial because you don't want to get into a tube with a bunch of demons do you really believe that human beings are demons no I do not and don't you ever say I did we wrestle not with flesh and blood but principalities and Powers [Music] Kenneth Max Copeland was welcomed by Aubry Wayne and vanito pearl Copeland on the 6th of December 1936 in Lubbock Texas Kenneth was raised in a devoutly Christian home where life revolved around attending church every Sunday and praying each night before bed the family home was located near a U.S Air Force Base and Kenneth loved to watch the various aircraft take off and land it was this fascination with airplanes which first spawned his aspirations of becoming a pilot but before that dream could take flight there was music Kenneth loved to sing and got lots of practice thanks in part to his childhood participation singing in church but as he matured into to a teenager he claims he grew further and further away from his God by the time he was in his early twenties he was singing pop music in nightclubs he was so good that he caught the ears of Executives at Imperial records he signed a contract with a recording company and things were looking bright for young Kenneth and they were about to get even better in October of 1955 he married Ivy bottaford and two years later they welcomed their daughter Terry that was the same year that Kenneth's music career reached New Heights one of his songs titled pledge of Love hit the Billboard Top 40 and stayed there for 15 weeks after peaking at number 17 on the charts I love you so I can't let you go I must make you see you mean more to me than each beat of my heart for I can't live without your love pledge of Love went gold and was charting alongside another young man who was new on the scene Elvis Presley but on the day pledge of love was released Kenneth was drafted into the military Elvis would follow only still had his childhood dream to fall back on after his time in the military he began working towards his pilot's license and just a few months after the divorce with Ivy was finalized he married a woman named Cynthia Davis a year later in 1959 he earned his pilot's license and began working for a commercial airline in Arkansas this was the start of a long and successful relationship with the skies in fact in 2012 the FAA awarded him the Wright brothers Master pilot award for more than 50 years of safety professionalism and Aviation expertise just like his faith which he had returned to it seemed Kenneth was always destined to soar both spiritually and literally but before the new pilot could really take off 23 year old Kenneth had a few more hurdles to overcome three years after their wedding Cynthia and Kenneth decided to part ways and he was back at square one he was a one-time successful recording artist and a respected pilot but he was also considered a failed husband something that could wreck your reputation in the 1960s he decided to give marriage another go and married his third wife Gloria niece in 1963. this is where love and prosperity truly blossomed within a couple of years Kenneth and Gloria were raising two children of their own the income from Kenneth's Pilot's work wasn't quite covering the bills and they needed to come up with a new plan they began to consider the idea of starting their own church in a bold move Kenneth quit his job to study at Oral Roberts Evangelical University in Oklahoma at 30 years old Kenneth was by far the oldest student at the University and he quickly attracted the attention of Oral Roberts himself during their first conversation Orel was so taken with the charismatic pilot he offered him the job of piloting his private jet it was this position which gave Kenneth Copeland a front seat view of everything evangelism could offer not just sermons Ministry and Outreach we're talking hundreds of millions of dollars status and influence and while piloting or Roberts wherever he wanted to go and getting to be mentored firsthand by the Man People considered Christian royalty Kenneth was taking notes it seemed the sky wasn't the limit for Kenneth it was merely the pathway to riches beyond measure riches that would later catapult him to a net worth of 760 million dollars making Kenneth Copeland one of the wealthiest Pastors in the world [Music] crazy Hills the streets still kill this it's unknown if Kenneth graduated from Oru but within a few short years of meeting Oral Roberts Kenneth and Gloria founded Kenneth Copeland Ministries or KCM for short in Fort Worth Texas and he appointed himself as head pastor but rather than stick to the method popular with regular churches where there's a set location and regular congregation in attendance the couple decided to take their Ministry Nationwide they began by offering three to six day conventions across the United States these recruitment events still run today and are free to attend at the time of this recording KCM is holding events from Nebraska to Colombia which brings us to the primary teachings of Kenneth's particular brand of evangelism Kenneth aligns to the charismatic movement which is also known as renewalism it preaches that Faith isn't just believed it is tangibly felt and experienced it's harmonizes that Believers will be given access to the five charismatic Gifts of wisdom the ability to speak in tongues the gifts of healing the ability to interpret prophecies and the ability to perform Miracles it's a highly energetic form of worship picture churchgoers speaking in tongues with their hands raised in fervent prayer or even experiencing what they believe to be miraculous healings and they are firm Believers in baptism through the Holy Spirit which they argue equips and inspires the individual for service Mission discipleship and life but charismatic Ministry on its own wasn't quite the right fit for Kenneth he decided to weave the Prosperity Gospel into his sermons as the name suggests the Prosperity Gospel postulates a Divine quid pro quo to Believers express your faith through financial gifts or donations and God will bless you with abundant health wealth and success in return to its Advocates this Doctrine is a testament to their God's tangible blessings which will rain down on True Believers when they give generously but religious critics argue that the Prosperity Gospel distorts core Christian teachings and emphasizes Earthly riches over spiritual depth others see it for what it clearly is manipulation and greed but that little issue was never going to stand in Kenneth's way he had tasted the good life with Oral Roberts and wanted more by 1971 Kenneth was broadcasting his sermons on live TV and had established his own show called The Word of Faith in 1973 he founded a magazine called believer's voice of Victory and in 1975 he took his sermons to another form of Airways when he established a radio Ministry later on he created the Kenneth Copeland Bible College Kenneth was quickly becoming a household name in the world of Christian broadcasting as the Airways carried his charismatic sermons to homes Across the Nation his magnetic presence and compelling teachings captivated viewers every broadcast not only expanded his reach but also bolstered his reputation as a leading voice and face in evangelism there's no doubt that the Allure of prosperity through faith resonated with many the Small Town Texas preacher was rapidly transforming into a global spiritual Powerhouse finally Kenneth was starting to taste the success he had long craved but he had one more mountain to conquer in the early 80s televangelism was on the cusp of becoming big time and so was Kenneth in the mid-1980s Kenneth made his televangelism debut alongside other names like Jimmy Swaggart Jim Baker and his own muse Oral Roberts the surge in popularity of televangelism during the 80s and 90s can be contributed to a range of socio-cultural technological and political factors this period saw a Resurgence in Conservative Christian values which was termed the religious right many Christians at the time perceived the 60s and 70s as a time of lacks moral values and a Divergence from the teachings of the Bible add to this the rise of cable television and it became the perfect environment for these charismatic figures to be welcomed into millions of homes politically televangelists tapped into the growing disenchantment with secularism advocated conservative stances on issues such as abortion promoted what they called family values and school prayer Kenneth jumped on the televangelism bandwagon when he launched the believer's voice of Victory broadcast the show propelled him from a figure known only within dedicated Christian circles to a household name even to those outside the religious fold TD sets Across the Nation buzzed with his impassioned sermons and charismatic delivery Kenneth's Journey was characteristic of a time when the television became the pulpit and preachers were akin to celebrities and with his Newfound Fame came great power power to influence the poorest of his viewers to give and give so that they too might be as materially blessed as he fast forward to the early 2000s and Kenneth's TV show is still broadcast to millions of viewers across the world and those millions of followers are bringing in millions of dollars in donations every year the regular cash injections and the fact that religious organizations don't have to pay the same taxes as everyone else means that Kenneth Copeland and his ministries have been able to amass hundreds of millions of dollars in tax-free earnings every year KCM Ministries is still located in its birthplace of Fort Worth Texas but rather than being run out of Kenneth and Gloria's living room room it is now housed in a 33-acre ex-marine core compound in Eagle Mountain Lake there's the main church building TV and radio production facilities a warehouse and a distribution center for KCM merchandise the property also houses sprawling residences for Kenneth and Gloria as well as their three adult children and their families Kenneth and Gloria's primary residence on the property is an 18 000 square foot mega mansion with six bedrooms six bathrooms crystal chandeliers and a sweeping spiral staircase just like Jesus had outside it has a tennis court two garages a boat dock and Lakefront access Kenneth has previously commented that when people drive past his house quote they will know there is a God and he said later you may think that house is too big you may think it's two grand I don't care what you think I heard from Heaven glory to God hallelujah end quote the property is conservatively valued at more than seven million dollars except in 2021 the Houston Chronicle revealed that KCM has declared the home's value at just a hundred and twenty five thousand dollars and because it's technically classed as a clergy residence it qualifies for a 100 tax break if the property was accurately valued and not under Church ownership it would accrue at least one hundred and fifty thousand dollars a year in property taxes which is more than what they claim it to be worth to drive that point home that's 1.5 million dollars of property taxes per decade that could help pay for public schools city streets County Roads police and fire departments and Senior Services to name a few but instead of helping his community that money all goes back to Kenneth and his church on top of the lavish homes he has his own personal Airfield aptly named Kenneth Copeland airport which is also located on the Eagle Mountain Lake property and when you have your own airport and Hangar you need aircraft to fill it in early 2019 Kenneth was asked by a reporter about his luxurious lifestyle and whether that was in contrast to the teachings of the Bible in response he offered quote when you go back to the Bible it's full of wealth he also claimed that he was responsible for bringing 122 million people to his Lord Jesus Christ and that doing his Lord's work takes a lot of money but then he was questioned why he needed a three million dollar Gulfstream private jet that he bought with church funds Kenneth has never disclosed how much he paid for the jet in 2018 but he did say that the previous owner film director Tyler Perry made the plane quote so cheap for me I couldn't help but buy it he justified the purchase as an essential business requirement because of his worldwide preaching commitments the thing is that when he bought that jet he already had another one which he had purchased just three years earlier for a staggering 20 million dollars and that one was crowdfunded from his congregation he also owns a smaller Cessna Aircraft which was gifted to him in 2007 and which he uses for domestic flights all of Kenneth's aircraft are tax-exempt because of KCM status as a church during the same interview about the private jet he was asked why he needs to fly private rather than commercial in his own words commercial flights are quote metal tubes filled with demons he clarified this comment by saying that being on a Plane full of people indulging in alcohol wasn't a good environment for a preacher to be in before going out and spreading the good word and he said that on one particular trip overseas he flew for 21 days 70 hours 40 000 miles and touched down on five continents if he didn't have his private jet thousands of people would have missed out on hearing him speak we'd just like to ask you about why you don't want to fly commercial why have you said that you won't fly commercial you said that it's like getting into a tube with a bunch of demons why do you think that no no listen to me just singing not the people the main reason is because of the need if if I flew commercial I'd have to stop 65 percent of what I'm doing that's really the name isn't it true that you want to fly commercials so that you can fly in luxury how much money did you pay for Tyler Perry's Gulfstream jet for example well for example that's really none of your business but isn't it the business of your donors I paid you kind of caught me off guard here okay so here I'd like to give you a chance to to catch your breath and and have a conversation we don't want to we don't want to catch you off guard I Love Inside Edition you got to get this now hey you listening to me my my wife thinks Inside Edition is oh yeah now thank you Lord help me just let me let me pray just well let me let me just ask you a really simple question a lot of people think it's Unbecoming for a preacher to live a life of luxury and to fly around in private jets what's your response to that very simple it takes a lot of money to do what we do we have brought over a hundred let's see this the latest figures just came out uh 122 million people to the Lord Jesus Christ let me give you another example last May I was scheduled for Lagos Nigeria as a long ways I had a week off and I was scheduled for Peru and I prayed about it and I thought I'm not missing that dedication in Jerusalem without the airplane that we have that I bought from Tyler Perry and I didn't pay anywhere and Tyler's one of the greatest guy he made it he made that airplane so cheap for me I couldn't help but buy it well my question then what would okay all right but I want to get to the demons because people are very concerned about that comment give me a chance here Inside Edition I love your eyes do you ever use your private jets to go visit your vacation homes for example yes okay again getting back to the comment you said that you don't like to fly commercial because you don't want to get into a tube with a bunch of demons do you really believe that human beings are demons no I do not and don't you ever say I did we wrestle not with flesh and blood but principalities and powers can you explain what you meant by that that by that term then just just explain because it's really simple you said you didn't want to get into a tube with a bunch of demons what did you mean the well let me ask you do you think that people that fly commercial or demons don't give me a chance to talk sweetheart I'll explain this to you but it's a Biblical thing it's a spiritual thing it doesn't have anything to do with people people I love people Jesus loves people but people get pushed in alcohol do you think that's a good place for a preacher to be and prepare to go preach to a lot of people when somebody in there is dragging some woman down an aisle it made me so mad to see that on television I wanted to punch a guy out myself I can't be doing that while I'm getting ready to preach so you just don't like to be around the sinful people or the the hurtful people is that what you're saying not the people baby not the people back during the days that we couldn't do anything else we had to travel commercially I've when I went to Royal Roberts University I flew for Oral Roberts I'm the commercial power so I spent a lot of time in Arabic you have how many planes we have the Gulf Stream and we still have our citation team and then we have a little small airplane but but those are the two ones that we use and we use them all the time and other people use them too we have other Ministries that that use these in the book of Ephesians oh God I love this we wrestle not the people but with principalities in powers unseen things rulers of the darkness of this world talking about the Devil he's a very real devil just the same as Jesus is a very real lord and and I spent a lot of time on airlines but the main thing that happened was not that wasn't the main reason the main reason was I could no longer do what I called to do and be on the airlines besides that I need my clothes when I get there so final question is a lot of people maybe have a misunderstanding then about what you do and prosperity preaching so the final question is this to those critics that say that a preacher should not be living a life of luxury what is your response to that they're wrong that's it that it's a misunderstanding of the Bible that if if you go into the old Covenant do you think the Jewish people believe you should be broke that Jewish people appreciate money more than they believe in wealth some people would find that offensive no wait a minute now I'm not talking about some people I'm talking about the Bible The Blessing of Abraham Abraham was extremely wealthy and he had Covenant with God not to it's not the Jewish blessing it's the abrahamic blessing God I get excited talking about it because I love it and I started out deep in debt with nothing which is another story but anyway so you say that it's biblical and that that there's a foundation in the Bible for this let me close it with this I I had to learn this like I said from the Bible and from my spiritual Mentor Oral Roberts and I'm I learned it from him working with him and then we became he was close friends until he died and um and he took the same heat for believing God would Prosper you that I've taken over the years and Abraham was very very wealthy man Galatians chapter 3. if if you belong to Christ then are you Abraham's seed and heirs according to his promise and his promise was great wealth the Bible also says that it's more difficult for a rich man to get into heaven than it is for a camel to get through the eye of a needle corrected the scripture but he said all things are possible with God and he said if you studied the the Greek behind that it's trusting in wealth when he said that his disciples said they were astonished out of measure because they were wealthy men they were astonished out a major saying how can anyone be saved he said all things are possible both of my grandfathers were preachers they were both very poor they lived simple modest lives they were extremely offended by men that made money like you do preaching like you do what would your response be to people that think that preachers shouldn't live this kind of a lifestyle excite my both my grandfathers and I understand that and I love them with all my heart it's it's your grandfather's that we're standing on their shoulders they held up and they stood for it glory to God but when you go back to the Bible it's full of wealth and it's full of Miracles signs and wonders and it's full of goodness and it's full of meanness it's just full of Hell on Earth those are the demons not the people I love the people there's no doubt that Kenneth is an incredibly wealthy man in the one percent and it's not a fact he's ashamed of in one interview he commented quote I'm a very wealthy man my wealth does not come from offering alone I have a lot of natural gas on my properties you didn't know that did you baby isn't that wonderful end quote and yet Kenneth's own Ministry website States quote God has given him Specific Instructions never to ask people for money or a place to preach it's unclear where exactly that message got lost because it evidently doesn't align with his views since he hit the big time by 2021 Kenneth Copeland had secured his position as the wealthiest Pastor in the United States boasting a staggering net worth of around 750 million dollars yet it wasn't merely the sheer magnitude of his wealth that Drew controversy or even the fact that it was amassed primarily from the generous contributions of his devoted followers his biggest scandals were much worse together to these destructive forces Beyond his fiscal activities Kenneth's track record with expenditures scientific perspectives and political leanings has been a subject of much debate and scrutiny in 2006 KCM announced the foundation of Angel Flight 44 which was touted as an aviation-based disaster relief Ministry which would provide Aid to hurricane-ravaged areas of Haiti given Kenneth's long connection to Aviation the ministry seemed like a natural fit for KCM for several years he appealed for donations to the ministry which aimed to support the effort to rebuild the community and provide essential supplies for residents of the worst hit areas except the promise supplies never came not one delivery of Aid was ever provided and no answer has ever been given as to where the donated funds went in 2010 the man who co-founded the ministry with Kenneth went on record to say that Kenneth never came through with the funds or the aircraft he had promised would be Central to the ministry when KCM was questioned about the co-founder's claims they commented that there was never a specific promise to provide Aid to Haiti they asserted that the call for donations had resulted in just under eight thousand dollars of funds which had all been put towards making plane repairs they went on to say that they had purchased an aircraft but it wasn't an airworthy condition and had structural issues they ended the statement by saying that they lacked the funds to buy new aircraft there are also controversies surrounding the financial aspects of Kenneth's Ministry in 2007 Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa required six Pentecostal Ministries to submit financial statements regarding their personal and organizational finances in relation to their tax-exempt status the senator raised questions about the personal use of church-owned airplanes luxury homes and church credit cards used by pastors and their families all of kcm's aircraft are tax-exempt but despite Kenneth saying that he needed his private jets for business purposes there was evidence that the planes had been used to fly to his vacation home in Colorado at least 143 times the senator who commissioned the probe also expressed concern about the lack of oversight of finances and religious organizations which meant their tax exemptions could benefit individuals and not just the organizations which are named on the letterhead Kenneth Copeland Ministries originally complied with the Senate investigators demand to provide information but their documents were later found to be incomplete and the investigators hit a wall as KCM refused to provide them with any further data in the middle of their investigation Kenneth turned a national ministers Gathering into a fundraising opportunity for right-wing politician Mike Huckabee this came shortly after Huckabee's loss to Senator John McCain in South Carolina at time when Huckabee was short of cash and sinking in the Florida primary polls The Minister's Gathering and political campaign was held at Kenneth Copeland's Ministries campus in Newark Texas the Trinity Foundation a group that monitors televangelists and viewed a live internet broadcast of the event said the fundraiser took in a hundred and eleven thousand dollars and generated pledges nearing one million dollars for Huckabee during the conference Kenneth stated that Huckabee supports ministers who are fighting to withhold information from Senate investigators in the United States non-profit organizations including churches can take stance on issues but not politicians federal law since the 1950s has included a ban on political activity which the state defines as advocacy on behalf of or in opposition to any political candidate when the IRS was contacted about Kenneth Copeland Ministries fundraising for Mike Huckabee Nancy Mathis an IRS spokesperson stated Federal privacy laws prevented her from discussing the appropriateness of Copeland's political fundraising activities with the media and despite some smaller religious groups agreeing that multi-million dollar Ministries were exploiting their exemptions they expressed concern that the investigation might impact their own tax liabilities because of the sphere a number of influential and lesser-known Ministries joined together to protest the Senate investigations probe Kenneth later commented that the investigation was a violation of religious freedom and invasion of privacy and a threat to the separation of church and state ultimately the probe was brought to a close in 2011 after three years no penalties were handed down and no findings of wrongdoing were ever announced even for those who refused to comply with the investigation Kenneth has also garnered controversy because of the way he's used his influence to insert himself into social issues around health care and politics in 2020 he was outspoken in his views against coven 19. naturally as a pastor who preaches that the power of His God has the ability to heal all ailments he told followers that he could provide all they needed to heal from covid he hosted a special report titled standing at against coronavirus where he told followers that kovid was quote a very weak strain of flu that healthy people shouldn't fear he also told his followers that all they needed to do was reach out their hand and touch their screens while he said the following prayer saying quote I blow the wind of God on you you are destroyed forever and you'll never be back thank you God let it happen cause it to happen end quote but maybe Kenneth didn't blow hard enough because it didn't work during the same episode he told viewers that fear is a spiritual Force fear is not okay it is sin it is a magnet for sickness and disease you are giving the devil a pathway to your body and he criticized pastors who stopped in-person Services due to the pandemic he closed his sermon by saying everyone was healed and well with a quick reminder to keep on donating to the church a month later he led a chant that went wind Almighty strong South Wind heat burn this thing in the name of Jesus I say you bow your needs you fall on your face Kenneth declared the pandemic over because quote Christian people all over this country praying have overwhelmed it he also demanded that God provide a vaccine immediately and then he tied the pandemic to politics he told his church the only reason that kovid had been able to spread was because opponents of Donald Trump had quote opened the door for the virus with their displays of hate against him his relationship to Trump was established long before covet entered the world in the lead-up to the 2016 election Kenneth sat on Trump's Evangelical Advisory Board in one of kcm's broadcast he told viewers that if they didn't vote for Trump quote you're going to be guilty of murder you're going to be guilty of an abomination of God you're going to be guilty for every baby that's aborted from this election forward end quote Kenneth has also been quoted as saying that the United States belongs to his God saying quote this is God's nation and nobody is going to take it away from him now I want to get that clear right now in the name of Jesus no man no woman no Democrat no Republican no socialist no communist can take this nation away from God I'm telling you right now God Almighty is head of this nation not people Jesus of Nazareth is Lord over the United States end quote in 2021 Kenneth was again in the headlines this time in regards to the covet vaccine despite his comments early in the pandemic when he demanded that his God deliver a vaccine against covid he said he wasn't going to get the vaccination and he used that stance to ask his followers for more money for another private jet because he wasn't able to fly commercial unless he was vaccinated but Kenneth and his wife and children have held anti-vaccination stances since long before covid in 2013 his church at Eagle Mountain became the center of a serious measles outbreak in the wake of the outbreak the church held a vaccination clinic and encouraged their parishioners to protect themselves with Western medicine however Kenneth's daughter Terry who leads that congregation had previously spoken out against vaccines and during the measles outbreak she promoted the use of vitamin D instead of immunization in 2018 during a flu outbreak in the United States that saw hospitalizations reach their highest point in a decade his wife Gloria went on a televised rant where she said that flu shots aren't required so long as you believe she said quote well listen Partners we don't have a flu season and don't receive it when somebody threatens you with everybody's getting the flu we've already had our shot he bore our sicknesses and carried our diseases that's what we stand on inoculate yourself with the word of God Jesus himself gave us the flu shot he redeemed us from the curse of flu and we receive it and we take it and we are healed by his stripes amen end quote Kenneth Copeland's Journey highlights the Blurred Lines between faith and finance devotion and political maneuvering spiritual guidance and controversial stances but his views on health care and science swerve dangerously into another territory completely in a world where accurate information is critical for Collective well-being the level of reach and influence televangelists can command beyond the pulpit is cause for concern his opinion might be the most trusted source of information for the millions of viewers who tune into his sermons every week Kenneth Copeland's trajectory from his Texas upbringing to the opulent realm of private jets and televangelist stardom may sound like an admirable rise from Rags to Riches his promise is that you too could have this lifestyle if you join him in the unyielding belief of the generosity of his God but if you follow his formula do everything right and still don't receive Prosperity just remain quiet or you'll surely be blamed for not believing hard enough and or not giving enough of your time and money because those are always the reasons given by con men once their followers realize they've been scammed this has been the story and Scandals of Kenneth Copeland America's wealthiest pastor [Music]
