halal is the arabic word that means permissible for those who follow islam so when i say the term halal tourism i'm speaking about the type of tourism geared towards muslim families to meet their needs in terms of diet dress or rituals today we are going to explore this concept and discover what halal tourism is all about to do that we visit an island in indonesia that is often overlooked due to the popularity of its neighboring island bali this island is called lombok the home of a thousand mosques and as soon as we touched down on the island we got our first taste of this special place with a warm warm bun [Applause] we are officially in lumbuk time to explore this beautiful beautiful island our first stop a traditional lombok lunch just 10 minutes from the airport all right we're in daifursas like a restaurant in lombok and we've only been here for like five minutes and we're already getting feathered our first impressions of the food it is fresh colorful and lots and lots of flavor then we have our oxtail soup look at it man look at this oxtail soup you can tell how long it's been cooking oh my look at that we're taking it with no sauce just a bit of rice that is fresh this was our first meal in indonesia the first place that we came to eat and i'm happy to eat you like you're at your own home yeah i felt at home you know like when you just relax sit and eat like that yeah thank you so much what makes lumbuk such a great destination is its beaches apart from the kung fu kids practicing it was so calm there was almost no one around the perfect romantic getaway [Music] the hotel was surrounded by lush greenery a great fit for muslims or anyone for that matter who want to travel but let me explain what makes this hotel halal or permissible for muslims all right so what does a halal room look like first of all halal room is exactly like a normal room but there's a few things included that makes it easier for us to practice our faith so first we have the quran for those of us who want to read the quran during our travels we have a prayer mat and we have an indication of the room of where mecca is because all muslims pray in that direction so what they have here prayer clothes for women this section is to cover from the tops someone who's on holiday wearing holiday clothes they can just put this on when they come to the room and pray really really cool i love it but you hear behind me that's the prayer happening and in the island of thousands of mosques wherever you go masha allah you hear the call to prayer you hear the people praying as a muslim you know it gives me a sense of peace and relaxation wherever i go on this island so for me that's beautiful now one reason why indonesian islands like lumbuk are so attractive to tourists is its incredible landscapes and lush nature today we had two missions number one was to learn more about the island of a thousand mosques and what makes it so special and number two is to swim in my very first waterfall [Music] to pass the one and a half hours let's ask marissa what had tourism is why is halal tourism so important it's because we don't want to give options so people can come from all over the world so people can enjoy if they want it to be hollow they know that everywhere they go it will be halal they don't have to worry about the food and anything so that's the concept of halal here as we were driving to the waterfall i noticed we drove past so many mosques a very unusual number of mosques so we decided to stop in one of them at prayer time it was so simple we didn't even need to think about searching for the closest mosque which i usually do when i'm traveling abroad here everything when it comes to prayer is so accessible everywhere we're in front of the one of the thousands of mosques so let me ask mashallah why so many mosques on the island why thousands on such a small island every 300 meters or something there's a mosque it's tradition all the elders they say build build build build mosques the deeds go to those who build it better to build the mosque than build their house that's what he's trying to say thank you so much it's beautiful you know there's a saying that whoever builds a mosque or contributes to building a mosque builds a home in heaven and that is what they're focused on they're focused on beyond the life that they have on earth and um getting a bit of goosebumps here it's really really beautiful it's really touching what's really cool to see when i'm traveling is how the same strong values of islam i was taught are applied in other countries around the world we are so far away from the birthplace of islam and yet these mosques have been built for generations and generations of muslims like this one which is the oldest mosque on the island and still remains intact after hundreds of years and finally it was adventure time we're wearing flip-flops for a hike so we are in the forest now walking through the forest to get to the waterfall good good yeah okay man this entire ecosystem is sacred to to the people everything is taken care of it just shows that connection between humans and nature covers all countries all cultures it's really beautiful when you go down you're not supposed to hold the rail from the front you're supposed to hold the rail from the back because it's easier to to maintain that balance because you're going down you maintain it but if you hold it forward it's easier to fall to the front if you slip and after hiking down into the jungle for 15 minutes i finally saw it my first waterfall my first waterfall oh i can't wait to stand underneath [Music] will be right that was one of the most therapeutic experiences just oh i've got like this euphoric feeling of just happiness and joy and excitement as the waters hitting me it was really hard too but i just felt oh man i just feel so at peace right now so now they've got some bikes to take us back up to the hill good so we don't have to do the walking whoa whoa all right we are heading back up this is how we do it [Music] hey [Music] on our way home we went to maghreb prayer in the local mosque it was so beautiful seeing the whole community gather here especially the younger generation mashallah it's like all the kids from the community come here to pray like you know like it's good to see the kids playing around here the families that come here together i don't know why like media doesn't show this part of islam which is the majority of islam is like this only the radicalism and you know the stigma that they said that is it look at these kids cheerful always smiling everyone's always smiling here by the way everyone it's indonesia oh they'll stay meet your friends be mischievous [Music] the next day we also wanted to get a different glimpse into the local culture so we went to a village in lumbuk that keeps the old traditions alive the traditions of the sasak people sasak is the native people of lombok okay we still live here beautiful let's see welcome thank you sir thank you so much first we learned a little bit about the lifestyle of the villagers it is the typical of the sasak houses wow where the people actually still live here this is how it looks today that's right yes so they do cooking inside they have a place where they can make fire in there okay this is a traditional coffee coffee that it's mix of 50 is coffee 50 is rice and then they and then we attended a ceremonial fight [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh you need to fight both at the same time i'm ready to go [Music] that was intense man they go at it hard bro this village was built not for tourism attraction actually it's the last village that we still keep the culture we still keep a tradition and we welcome the people to come here yeah it's a beautiful way to get educated about the island mashallah and i think there's no better way you know to see like the history of a place than through the people who still live the same way they did generations back because he said that you know 15 generations have lived in this village and has been kept exactly the same they still have the same culture same traditions same way of life same way they integrate with each other so full of fun you can see that family joy and all the activities that you do so i loved it and finally before leaving the island we visited the national mosque of lombok we are now in the main mosque hall of the hebel mosque means the love of the country mosque and is the main and largest mosque in lombok and it is absolutely gorgeous now what is the reason that there are thousands of mosques on this island is because people here view building a mosque just as important as building a home and what that creates is this energy on this island that no matter what you're going through no matter what you're struggling with that you will always have a home that the people who love you that the places that are safe are just a mosque away that's a beautiful thing when we left lombok we had the honor of meeting his excellency mr santiago uno the minister of tourism and creative economy in indonesia we sat down and had a conversation with him about the tourism sector in indonesia and the incredible richness of this country so about lambo if you choose food culture or nature can i choose all of them what is the name of an island known as the island with a thousand miles [Applause] there was a delay before he said yes i thought hold on over there name of this meal or food this product is made from fermented soya seeds [Applause] that is amazing this is uh the gift airman backs indonesian style i love it i love it also we have something for alex which is the thing that you make from champion a jacket patek a jacket i love it thank you so much thank you all right before leaving i had one more question for the minister as he isn't just the minister of tourism but also a minister of a term i rarely heard before the creative economy i want to ask you a question so like we've learned a lot about tourism but i also want to focus on your other title the creative economy why is the creative economy so important to indonesia and do you think to countries around the world because it employs 20 million people and we are a social media country so all ministers have instagram tick tock accounts because we believe this is the best way to communicate to stakeholders potential consumers uh potential visitors and thank you this has been incredible thank you so much that was probably one of the most informal meetings i've ever had with a senior government official i learned about the country i learned about the history i learned about the culture and i learned about social media strategy i love it i love it god bless and that concluded our trip to the island of a thousand mosques and to indonesia as a whole a great example of halal tourism the island of a thousand master island wherever we went we had a piece of culture a piece of tradition a piece of history a piece of our religion islam being showcased to the world masha allah i'm getting goosebumps just talking about it and i hope everyone gets a chance to come and experience this to just see how religion and tourism can come together to give an experience for everyone regardless of what they believe in or where they're from but to learn more about us who we truly are and what we truly represent thank you all so much for watching much love and god [Music]
