welcome to an idiot's guide to watches i'm your host russell and in today's show i'm going to talk about my one year anniversary of owning the rolex explorer want to see what i found out my loves and my hates are you ready let's go [Music] today's cassio corner comes from none other than instagram account the happy wrist the a158w in all its glory now this man is saying yes it's a digital watch it's retro it cost me 20 bucks but it looks damn fine on a leather strap the true audacity the confidence the sheer i don't give a sh sugar that's why you are this week's casio corner my friend thanks for sharing right so on to today's show and i think your watch out i am in fact wearing the star of the show my rolex explorer 214270 before i talk about this watch let me tell you my reasons for wanting the rolex explorer first one i'm a tennis coach i have been a tennis fan and a tennis player for a long time as far back as i can remember watching wimbledon on the telly there was no other sponsor apart from rolex you saw it on the clocks you saw it on the boards you saw it everywhere now back in the 80s and 90s i watched a lot of james bond mum and dad were a sean connery fan but i was a roger fan bit of a ladies man remember as if it was yesterday watching live and let dive for the first time and james bond using his rolex submariner as a magnet as a circular saw from that moment on i wanted dive watches thirdly anyone that's watched my previous shows or have followed me on instagram will know that my late grandfather had a 1960s rolex explorer now i didn't know it was an explorer until a few years ago my grandad was a self-made successful businessman and he wore this explorer on special occasions he had it on a jingley jangly jubilee bracelet which is where my love for them started but for me personally it was a sign of success an achievement at the end of july it was the one year anniversary of owning this bad boy and i thought a great episode would be for me to tell you how i thought about it do i still love it is it everything i wanted it to be did i find out anything unusual so i'll go right from the start now this is still to this date the most expensive watch i've ever purchased the rest of my collection sits nicely under a thousand pounds so i'm not a usual luxury watch buyer so you'd excuse me for being a little bit surprised when i went into the authorized dealer and was offered a cup of coffee before my purchase i also felt like everybody in the store was my best friend now it's vulgar to talk about money isn't it but this watch cost me 5 000 pounds and it's money that i set aside and i knew i had for this watch please don't ever put yourself in a position where you're financially crippled from buying a watch sorry when i got the call from the authorized dealer got the call after two weeks of asking by the way it's not what you know it's who you know before i go any further i did a lot of research on the servicing costs as well rolex boasts that you won't have to service these watches for 10 years which is awesome however when it does come to service it's not going to be cheap so i did take that into account before i bought it now one thing i did learn is they were controlling the market even after the sale yes this little warranty card they would not give it to me sorry sir we just want to make sure you're not going to purchase this and then sell it straight away hang on a minute i just bought this watch for retail it's my choice isn't it maybe there is dodgy people out there but i'm certainly not one of them okay now let's talk about the actual watch shall we it wasn't until i got it home took it out the box and just held it did i realize this is quite special this watch was no longer just a tool this thing felt like jewellery rolex does everything in-house and their stainless steel is their actual own 904 l stainless steel oyster steel i've got a thing or two to say about that in a minute just hang on so let's talk about the dial this is the perfect dial for me matte black applied indices white gold frame don't you know minute trek along the outside i love the reholt with the rolex i'm etched around the edge the 3 6 and 9 are just perfectly formed perfect size and i absolutely love the mercedes handset the in-house proprietary chroma light loom is ridiculously great glow's a beautiful blue color the oyster case and oyster bracelet are a mixture of polish and brushed surfaces just beautiful brushwork just incredible stuff the twinlock crown is something i had to get used to when you unscrew the crown and it pops the first time you have to do a little twiddle and then you get a second the winding of this watch is like nothing i own you know tgv and other um youtubers have called it like a knife through butter it is so smooth and refined feeling every rolex that i've had the pleasure of handling got that same amazing wind the case back is sterile now if every watch company were doing it i'd say that was a bit crap but they're not so for some reason it's great i think it's just another nod from rolex to say we're a tool watch live with it this has a automatic handwinding hacking movement now this is the only automatic watch where i just cannot hear the rotor amazingly silent cannot hear it ever the oyster bracelet is the best bracelet i've ever owned something so simple like the um easy link extension just makes such a hell of a difference it's the difference between giving you a five meal extra or making it five mil tighter just the clicks when you shut bang bang just so machine well as you can tell i'm still in love with the thing it's a watch that's never going anywhere i'll tell you some things i don't like about it but let me first tell you why i think you should own one this watch was born out of an amazing achievement set by sir edmund hillary and tenzig norgay back in 1953 when they summited mount everest rolex always attached themselves to great pioneering humans this explorer watch was celebrating mankind's efforts this has human endeavor determinations guts blood sweat tears honest to goodness downright greatness i think the explorer is the most versatile i've talked about the 39 millimeter case and i think the slightly bigger makes it a little bit more sportier a bit more contemporary you've got the mercedes hands you've got the twin lock crown and the screw down case back that gives you 100 meters of water resistance you've got the paraflex hair springs you've got the paraflex shock absorbers this watch will survive any sort of pillow fight then you look at the case you look at the bezel it's polished the dial it's so simple it's just a three-hand watch it's understated i've never had anyone say i like you watch me they have my squarely 1521 blue ocean the showy one it's an undercover lover and i love it for it i'm not a showy person so you can dress this up this could be worn with a suit some bermuda shorts a football kit even a big fancy dress chicken outfit okay there are some negatives with this watch the one big one for me is that this watch is a scuff monkey if you don't like seeing blemishes fingerprints little scuff scratches this swatch is probably not for you yes it buffs up a treat but i've had less scratches from my skx's and i beat the hell out of them now i wish that this watch came in a 36 millimeter case it used to it was more true to the original 1016 reference and closer to my granddad's watch i didn't want to spend this sort of money on a secondhand watch i wanted the protection of the authorized dealer and the warranty now if rolex did something like make a 36 millimeter and a 41 millimeter like they have done with the new oyster perpetuals i think we'd all be grateful wouldn't we now this watch is going to be with me for the rest of my life and hopefully i can pass it on down to my daughter i'll try to pop my clogs just before a service is due though okay to summarize i've had it a year i still love it i still love it as much as the day i got it it gives me that link to my past as a kid that link to my grandad who has passed away now as well as celebrating an iconic mankind achievement three episodes on rolex donnie gotta come down with a retro bang let's do a casio episode next day if you have loved the ramblings today please click like and subscribe if you haven't already also click the bell icon you wouldn't want to miss the next one next week i'll be doing my top 10 watches under a thousand pounds i'm really excited i hope you are too
