planning a road trip is always exciting but have you ever wondered about the real cause behind those miles of Adventure we're going to pay 12 which is technically half because we came here with 50 today we're going to go into the world of road trips seeing a Tesla Model Y and look into the financial and practical aspects that come with it charging your Tesla home has an initial one-time investment of around 500 for the wall charger charging a Tesla home offers convenience but what about the price per kilowatt hour on average residential electricity rates are around 13 to 15 cents per kilowatt hour in the United States charging a Tesla Model y with its 75 kilowatt hour battery at home will cost you about 13 for a full charge Grand Canyon National Park I charged it fully so it 330 might be a good idea top Maybe some flag stuff yeah and then go through Flagstaff and there is supercharger up there by my Grand Canyon if you choose to use a Tesla Supercharger which provides faster charging speeds the cost per kilowatt hour can vary by location generally is higher than home charging averaging around 28 cents per kilowatt hour a full charge and a supercharger could cost you around 21 dollars if this is Supercharger so it takes the shortest period of time to charge it but if people are here charging you have to wait but what Tesla is doing if you stay here without charging you will be penalized for it right now it's showing 118 miles per hour which is quite slow we would have to be here in 40 minutes for that and now it's picking up C it's charging actually pretty slow 236 mile per hour it can be better we're going to pay 12 which is technically half because we came here with 50 so now we are fully charged we have 280 miles to go and we know we will be there with 39 battery capacity left but what's next you have to know where is next Charger you can get stuck somewhere if you don't pay attention to it our trip to Bisbee we found out that all those sweet juicy Chargers we saw on the map are not available we are in Gardens at high mile range because that's the only place I get charged our Tesla around Bisbee the owners of this place they allowed people who are not staying here to pay three dollars per hour and charge your car all the hotels they have Chargers but you cannot charge your car there unless you stay in the hotel not even pay for that I was like I will pay you money let me charge my car no but what about traditional SUVs let's consider a similar small SUV that runs on gasoline with the current average gas price of around three dollars per gallon and the fuel efficiency of 25 miles per gallon a 300 mile road trip would cost you about 36 dollars in fuel now let's talk about time charging an electric vehicle takes quite longer than filling up a gas tank a Tesla Model y could take around 40 minutes to charge from 10 to 80 at a supercharger this means that during your road trip you'll need to plan longer stops to ensure your vehicle is charged for the journey ahead this is technically the Third charge that we've done for this road trip which is basically a four hour road trip and today we've visited two superchargers in about two hours we could have spent the night without charging it maybe you know I cannot do that we could have tried it and then charge it early tomorrow morning but the problem is like if it gets too cold it gets too hot and we start using the battery we will be struggling with it that's one of the things that it's kind of annoying about road tripping with a Tesla that you have to always think about where is the next supercharger it also adds at least half an hour per charger right right now it's gonna be 40 minutes so it's charging 450 six miles per hour which is really good while Tesla Supercharger network is extensive there will still be instances where you need to search for an available charging station especially during Peak travel times this will definitely add a level of uncertainty to your road trip in fact if you decide to take a trip to a destination that is not close to a major highway or city you're also finding a supercharger or even just a charger that is available to the general public are extremely low this will definitely reduce the places that you can actually go to with your Tesla which is definitely not the case with a normal gasoline power car or SUV one positive thing about electric cars is the quality of the drive we're not Tesla Fanboys nor have a lot of experience driving fancy electric cars but in our limited experience the Tesla Model Y is a smooth quiet ride the instant acceleration safety features and the eco-friendly aspect of driving an electric vehicle these are all factors that add value to your road trip and their General Driving Experience so what's the bottom line the real cost of a road trip in a Tesla Model Y is much higher than the price you pay every time you charge it the super comfortable and smooth drive doesn't make up for the added stress of having to plan a road trip destination based on the locations of superchargers electric cars are definitely the future but until there's a wider network of available Chargers as there are gas stations we'll probably continue to take our 2014 RAV4 to most of our future road trip Adventures [Music]
