"We have a lot of scooters, you know"
Boy, he would've been pissed if the first lady had bid $2148.
That dining set is horrendous
Zach galifianakis definitely watched this episode a few times
Let's just take a moment to witness just how goddamned smooth Bob Barker was in the clip. Like, I know he had been doing the show forever at that point, but his hosting skills are second to none (well, him and Alex Trebek, really).
I was there for this live. Micheal knew every price of every item on the show that day. My friend (also named Micheal) beat him on the wheel spin only because itโs the one thing this amazing dude couldnโt win through his intellect. He was shouting out the exact prices for both the showcase showdown from the audience but my buddy couldnโt hear him and overbid. Being in the audience that day represents one of the best days of my life, on vacation in Cali, endless laughter, entertainment and seeing Micheal do this remarkable feat of memorization. Thanks for uploading!
There will always be a use for you Bob.
Thereโs a brilliant doco called โPerfect Bid: The Contestant Who Knew Too Muchโ. These guys hand wrote spreadsheets of prizes and all their variants and basically started a syndicate to win.
Storytime for me...
Back in college, I would schedule classes around TPIR so I could watch it. Well, in the early 2000s, I decided to go out there for spring break with my brother and we would go to a week of tapings with our combined knowledge of prices and games. Some games are easy enough to win, others require a little more luck.
On the third day of tapings, he gets selected. Item for for bids is a refrigerator. My time to shine, I know these are between $1100 and $1500. Everyone overbids with the lowest bid being $1200. I know for a fact that they are never cheaper than $1100, so I tell my brother to bid $1100 (close enough to scare off other contestants). That works and he makes it up on stage to play SafeCrackers. He needs to guess the price of a gaudy dog bed to win a bedroom set. The three numbers, that need to be put in order at 0, 5, and 8. Knowing TPIR strategy, we land on $850 as a price. If anything ever can end in a 0 or 5, you go for that. If both numbers are possible, you go for 50. Would a dog bed really cost $850? I mean, it looked gaudy enough, so he guesses that...and the safe opens. Current haul: a refrigerator, $850 dog bed, and a $3000 bedroom set.
Now the luck part - the wheel. Thankfully, everyone else lost their pricing game on this day, so my brother spun last. He didn't have the win after the first spin, but the second spin wins (and sadly, he was one space away from getting a combined $1.00). Off to the Showcase he goes.
First showcase comes up and it is a dining room set, Dodgers season tickets, and a station wagon. Even though we live across the country, you rarely get showcases with cars in each, so he bids. Next showcase comes up and it is an espresso maker (we don't drink coffee, so no big deal), but then the most amazing price comes after that...a year's supply of Krispy Kreme doughnuts (or 2/day for an entire year). After that? A cruise to Mexico. After that? A pickup truck. DAAAAAAAAAMN IT! That showcase sounds amazing. The other contestant bids and now we wait.
Bob reads my brother's bid and actual retail price and he's off by about $5000. Fingers crossed the other contestant goes over or is further away. Bob reads her bid, $35,xxx, actual retail price is $2x,xxx. As soon as I heard him say "two thou...", I am already halfway up on stage and proceed to freak out with my brother as we realize our stupid plan of going to a week of tapings of TPIR worked out in the grandest way possible.
