you're doing it wrong probably in this video we're going to talk about the top pc gaming mistakes that everyone seems to make and how to fix them there is some real gems in here so don't you dare go anywhere i'm going to split these into three groups pc parts pc building and of course pc gaming so feel free to use the timestamps if you're one of these horrible know-it-all types i just hope that you then missed something and who would have egg on their face then huh huh huh find out after a short word from this video sponsor i really should stop insulting my audience shouldn't i want to grab some huge pc gaming goodies asap predator is the official global partner of intel xtreme masters and they have some incredible deals for anyone looking to up their pc battle station simply purchase a participating product and then grab up to 12 months of free yes free xbox game pass there's plenty of desktops and laptops to pick from including the epic triton 500 so what are you waiting for grab your brand new predator gaming rig with that link down below first things first pc parts your gaming computer should last you for years to come so please buy the right stuff i think the easiest mistake to make is to buy an expensive cpu and motherboard common reasons for this are future proofing or to get all of the features but both of these things will barely help you in a couple of years time and i can almost guarantee that it's gonna hurt your wallet right now if you've got a load of money to spend on your pc then obviously that's great but you should always get something that is appropriate for your graphics card as a general rule an rtx 3060 or lower would be great with a six chord chip like the ryzen 5600x or maybe the core i5 11600 well anything higher end is probably worthy of an 8 core processor like the 5800x or the 11700 cutting back on your motherboard isn't going to hurt your frame rate either most of us just aren't willing to overclock and even those that are the chances of it making a noticeable performance differences to the games that you actually play is actually quite unlikely getting a b550 or a b560 motherboard is a great idea to save yourself some cash and those extra features are probably things that you wouldn't ever use exactly the same story with cpu callers we seem to be obsessed with spending a hundred pounds plus on them why top end chips certainly do need good calling there is no doubt about that but a six core cpu with an all-in-one isn't necessarily the best use of your money instead there are some fantastic options for half the cost many of which will perform similarly when it comes to noise and in some cases even better which is a lovely segue into the big mistake that i made last week which is picking an inappropriate case yes that's right even the great pccentric does make a booboo from time to time and this 500dx was just not really appropriate for the hardware that i tried to cram inside it was worth it just to illustrate the issues that you can get by ordering everything online as well everything was compatible the radiator didn't fit at the top and the graphics card was so big the airflow was pretty shoddy always plan your build carefully and make sure that the size and ventilation are up to scratch for whatever it is that you plan to create the final components actually sit on your desk the monitor and this is a mistake that actually makes me very sad inside please for the love of everything that is rgb don't use a cheap ass monitor with your super expensive gaming pc it is such a sad sight to behold there is absolutely nothing wrong with using something like this on a temporary basis it's a solid way to get a better system up front but if you're using a 1080p 60hz monitor with an rtx 3070 then your priorities are definitely all wrong you can get 144 hertz panels for under 200 pounds and they make the world of difference seriously a great pc deserves a great monitor alrighty next up the build process pcie generation 4 ssds have arrived and they bring super fast storage to the masses if you're using a b550 or b560 motherboard though the only way to get them to work properly is to use the top slot on your motherboard all others will be controlled by the chipsets and will be limited to yesterday's news pcie generation 3. if you are building with an all-in-one liquid cooler do yourself a favor and put it at the top of the case obviously this isn't supported in all chassis but it's always worth doing if you can placing radiators at the front is usually a bad idea for gaming pcs as all of that extra heat that's generated by the processor then goes straight to your graphics card and that's before you mention the physical air blocking sure the cpu will definitely run a little bit warmer but this is unlikely to affect your gaming frame rates whereas a loud and throstling graphics card almost certainly will there's also memory speed to consider did you know that the speed that it says on the box isn't necessarily what you're actually going to get in your gaming pc you have to turn it on in the bios there's a one click button called xmp or extreme memory profile usually right on the home splash screen after you've mashed that delete key toggle with this button and then assuming that there are no compatibility issues windows will then show your ram running at its proper rated speeds with a high chance of larger frame rates in certain games once you're in windows there are some extra optimizations that you should probably make too many startup apps is a common thing for people to get wrong as they take time for your pc to open and they can constantly use resources in the background even if your pc has been on for half an hour simply search for startup in the windows bar and then untick anything that's non-essential another one is using out of date drivers this is a game critical mistake that you have to rectify as any new games or hardware will usually see big gains to smoothness and fps with every new driver release in some cases we're talking 10 plus so ensure geforce experience or radeon software is properly set up to inform you of any new drivers here's one for the big boys out there freesync and g-sync something that is enabled by default right well the answer is sort of if you've never checked the answer may well be no nvidia g-sync is only enabled on certain panels automatically and even then it's only configured to work in full screen mode rather than full screen and board list window not only that but non-certified panels are actually disabled out of the box and require a manual override tick box to actually get them properly working the last windows trick is something that good old broken record-centric seems to go on about all of the time because it is so important please tune your fans do it now or maybe after you've liked and subscribed there is no excuse as it is so simple just download the software from your motherboard manufacturer's website ensure all of the fans are actually connected to it and then run the tuning utility it only takes about five minutes and it will ensure that your fans are only audible when they need to be don't be one of these people that have a jet engine sitting on their desk just for emails you're not in bloody top gun let's press on to gaming though and the number one mistake that pc gamers make is not understanding what the in-game settings actually do i totally appreciate that it is a bit of a minefield but it's worth a 15-minute read-up to be fully equipped for your whole gaming life you don't need to turn all of the settings up to max but likewise there are definitely some key settings that should only be lowered down if you're in some sort of frame rate emergency textures for instance should always be set as high as your vram allows while shadow quality ray tracing and ambient occlusion are very taxing settings that should be your first port of call to claw back some lost fps and on this note if you're playing multiplayer even if you have a top end graphics card turning all of the settings up to ultra might not be the smartest choice other than the key settings any visual eye candy does you no good at racking up frags so always be aware of what your frame rate is and whether the image quality versus fps trade-off is actually worth it there's one setting that i know a lot of people don't fully understand and that's fov or field of view think of this as toggling between a standard and an ultra wide camera lens the wider the fov the more stuff that actually fits on your screen it's important for pc gamers to have a higher setting than console users as you usually see it closer to your monitor and your brain expect to see more of the image than some games actually have enabled by default if you're ever feeling a little bit sick try turning this up a little bit and see if you feel more comfortable if you're a pro pc gamer then you probably know all about overlays discord afterburner frame view all are great all of the time well actually no because the overlay method can cause some significant problems in quite a few games discord for instance caused me a lot of valorant stutter that magically disappeared when i disabled the overlay whilst frame view has had similar problems in around about 20 of the games i've actually tested don't get me wrong overlays are fantastic for monitoring but they shouldn't be turned on every single time you game instead try setting up a toggle key lastly there are the games themselves and newsflash game stores often overcharge you steam sales are great and all but please don't neglect other retailers there are many shady places that i wouldn't recommend buying from but if the game that you want isn't on sale from its native store chances are it will be cheaper somewhere else from an official online retailer and that my friends actually concludes today's video what have you learned
