until the east-west schism of 1054 the catholic church and orthodox church were just one but today they're separate with one difference being that the catholic church views its pope the bishop of rome is having supremacy over other bishops while the orthodox believe that no bishop should be supreme although they allow one to be first among equals the entire communion is made up of several autocephalous churches for example the russian orthodox church ecumenical patriarchate of constantinople and polish orthodox church these may have some differences in liturgical structure but they teach the same doctrine and members in any of the churches can take communion in any of the others however only members of orthodox churches are permitted to take communion in any orthodox church church polity is a hierarchical structure of bishops with patriarchs or archbishops at the top bishops in the orthodox church are required to remain celibate but this is optional for priests who may be married before ordination there are seven sacraments baptism chrismation communion holy orders penance anointing of the sick and marriage infants are baptized and the mode is most often triple immersion the eucharist is viewed as the true body and blood of christ mary mother of jesus is called theotokos meaning god-bearer and revered along with other recognized saints orthodox faithful pray to mary and the saints requesting their intercession though they don't teach a location of purgatory there may still be prayers for the dead churches often have painted icons and there is incense candles chanting lots of liturgy no instruments special ornate clothing for the priests a calendar and so forth things said in the divine liturgy as well as homilies are in the language of the people salvation is understood as a process of transformation a synergy between god and man faith and works they teach that the goal of each and every person is to share in the life of god this is a lifelong pursuit called theosis or deification the church considers itself the guardian and interpreter of the scriptures which are 49 old testament books and 27 new testament books the bible is not the sole final authority the church and its holy tradition is also authoritative as mentioned the orthodox church has a historical connection to the catholic church click here to watch the two-minute video on the catholic church or if you'd like to learn more about the orthodox church's cold war over ukraine click here
