[Music] Neal from Essex here with today's three-minute Thursday today we're gonna have a short conversation with you about the most misunderstood control on a tractor so between your legs on most tractors is a little dial here that hasn't open to closed symbol on it most people have no idea what it does they sit here twist the thing back and forth waiting for something to happen and nothing ever does the reason for that is is because this is a restriction valve that works in conjunction with the up and down control for your three-point hitch most people aren't aware but three-point hitches don't have any kind of down pressure they don't push down they only lift hydraulically in one direction and that's up when the thing needs to drop down you have a little orifice little valve that's in line with that cylinder that hydraulic mechanism that's allowing it to drop they can open and close and what that's going to do is it's going to change how quickly your three-point hitch drops to the ground so a 200 pound implement for instance isn't very heavy when you lower your hitch to the ground it might not come down as quickly as you would want it to and so you could take this valve and open it up a little bit in order to allow that implement to drop more quickly to its position that you put it in well the flip side of that though if you had a 2,000 pound implement back there that's really really heavy and it doesn't come down in a controlled manner it drops like a rock closing this thing off a little bit is gonna make it come down more slowly and in a more controlled manner we will get periodic phone calls into the dealership from people taking their three-point hitch levers moving them down and calling us and telling us well my three-point hitch isn't dropping it's not going down and the reason for that is this restriction valve that valve can actually be closed off the entire weight and nearly closed so that when you take your implement right now I've got about an 800 pound mower behind me close the valve off and push this thing forward the implement won't move at all and so when that happens the problem is that this valve is closed just take it and turn it a little bit and then you're gonna find your implements gonna slowly lower to the ground so I'm gonna start the tractor up here and go through the motions of having the valve open and closed and show you how the mower behind me here responds so right now I had the valve closed off the entire way I'm gonna start the tractor and you're gonna see even with the valve closed I can lift my mower up but now once it's up I'm going to take the lever and push the lever the whole way forward my mower doesn't move it doesn't drop because I got that valve closed off so I'm gonna reach down here to the valve and then just slowly open it and wait for my implement to move and then you can see it starts to drop down once I have it open now I'm gonna take it back up the whole way and show you the control issue that you can have here I'm gonna take the valve and crank it the entire way to have it open the whole way and watch what happens when I throw my lever forward right it comes down very very quickly and abruptly and even if I go to a middle position and don't drop it the whole way to the ground I get a lot of shake and bounce as it goes up and down right almost seems like there's something wrong with the tractor now if I come back up here to my valve and I close my valve off and get it to a point that it's going to give a little bit of restriction to it you can see how much more smoothly my implement comes down and go even softer still and there the whole way front and just wait for that guy to slowly come down to the ground so it's going to put a lot less wear and tear on your implements and have them come down in more controlled manners without bucking the tractor around by setting that valve appropriately for the weight of your implement so you can see why that little control has no clear everyday function it's definitely something that's good to understand by adjusting it properly it's going to give you much better control of the implements on your three-point hitch help them move more smoothly and predictably and just make your tractor a little bit nicer to operate so if you're going through the tractor buying process right now or you have a machine already if we can help you we have a part sales and service all available at Messick's 800 -
