at the beginning of the year emperor lemon made pretty much a documentary about the history of hunger books but not just hungry books but also the five God said Meili I bet about the history of competitors Spanish words as a whole but also touched upon smash bros biggest controversies well at the same time also talking about its biggest successes however the main point of the video was to talk about hunger box's legacy and how this man is likely the most hated figure in all of Smash Bros while this video offers a very accurate and a very interesting narrative of the events as a whole I still feel like I had quite a bit to add so I wanted to pretty much go through certain moments in the entire video which by the way is very long and I completely recommend you guys to watch the original if you want to kind of have the entire context of the video because we're not gonna put two hour-long reaction video this channel so I'm gonna grab the key important moments and kind of give you guys some further added context since I'm someone that's been around on the scene since pretty much it's been around I figured I have some extra you know knowledge that not very many people have not to mention that I'm also directly friends for hungrybox and as always if you guys are enjoying the content do be sure to subscribe if you watch regularly but you're not and also to make sure to hit those notifications to not miss out on those sweet daily uploads so the beginning of the video pretty much focused on setting up the stage for what the concept of the five gods and pretty much the story of competitive smash as a whole a lot of you guys are probably familiar with these concepts because you generally watch my channel and I've covered things like this very often but the summarized hungrybox is one of the greatest melee players a part of the five gods which means at some point in time he was one of the only five people that were capable of winning MELAS biggest tournaments one interesting point that is mentioned in the video though it was the inception of brawl assassin touched upon on detail in the video but essentially when brawl came out it was actually going to kill melee at some point in time after seven years as the GameCubes most popular title melee was scheduled to be supplanted by the next smash game many players that melee pretty much decided to quit players like me chicken decided to focus on broke more competitively as a game rather than melee Armada originally was going to be retiring at that point in time and players like mango on dr PP were attended much less what a lot of people don't know and usually say is that what revived the melee competitive scene was the revival of melee AKA rom tournament series but that's actually not entirely the truth what actually revived the competitive melee scene as a whole and what really sparked the whole legacy of the five gods the legacy hunger bugs meat chicken and all these other great players was the Smash Bros documentary not only did this introduce mainly into the mainstream and allowed the game's many successful competitors to obtain sponsorships or other high-level you know companies to support them I make melee as the living actually a reality was the attention that the community got from the Smash Bros dr. meaning matter of fact if you actually go back and look at the results of five gods such as many other things you will notice that there is absolutely a spike of interest in competitive smash in the 2014 area which is one of doctor manette came out if melees roster are completely unusable in a competitive setting in the early days of melee she was considered the best character with her rapid attacks and movement as the meta progressed through the rest of the 2000s more characters would emerge as top-tier contenders the ice climbers with their infinite combo and the space animals Fox and Falco with their great mobility and high damage and then there's Puff the very interesting thing about melee is that it has a similar effect to ultimate where it's kind of hard to pinpoint the best character in the game for the longest of times people have conclusively said that the best character in the game is Fox but based on hungrybox is extremely successful performances a lot of people have shifted to the popular opinion that probably just a book is the best character in the game now that Zayn is in the pastry or any that contender for being the best player in the world currently there is yet another wave of debates whether or not Marth is the best guy in the game people tend to have their opinions heavily change based on the result of tournaments and pretty much the best guy Canadian can be pretty much any of six crackers what is interesting though is that pretty much all of the best successful players and merely have always played different characters you have me chicken focusing primarily on martha's sheik you had hunger bugs being DJ football player you had mango focusing on fox and falco primarily fox for a lot of his big wins you had dr PP being d falco player and then you hermana also being the one peach player this is very important because they made it very easy to have a narrative everyone played the same character it will not look nearly as interesting from an outsider perspective but it also added enough variety and gave every person kind of their own signature character the scale of sickness the melee community loves to throw around this idea of players and characters being sick a sync character roughly translates to a character being cool dynamic and generally fun to watch in play arguably more important than melee steer list is it's sick list which by my estimate looks something like this this is actually by far one of the most interesting topics touched upon it in the video one thing that's very puzzling about the specialist community is that it is by far the community that's the most concerned about this entire concept of the sickness tearless for spectators competitors and even fans alike it isn't nearly as important how good your character is so long the character is actually interesting to watch it is to the point that people more often than not devyn eyes players that use characters that are perceived to be the opposite of sick it is a very purist point of view that is actually very personal in Smash but I haven't really seen any other type of fighting games nearly as much you can see this obviously in million whereas people even though fox falco and other characters are often seen as better than puffs but because puff is obviously all the way into the lame part of the thickness tier list means that if you're a fox or whatever player and you play a certain way you're seen as cool and obviously good but if you play something on the spectrum of ice climbers for puffs you're instantly demoknights to the point that people take it to a personal level they attach this to your personal values so obviously meaning rarely if you play one of these boring lame characters you are a bad person you are more boring you're probably more evil in some kind of way this doesn't happen just in melee though it also happens in ultimate and pretty much everywhere in the smash bros community for example remember this entire Sonic controversy where we wanted to ban Sonic because he's lame Sonic is not even the best character in the game he's never been in contention for being the best character in the game let alone most people don't even consider him to be a top tier care for people were completely okay with banning the character because the character is boring to watch if you really think about it this natural community actually has a tremendous problem with discrimination the difference is though that unlike things like racism people are completely okay with it on a social level it is okay to hate on you because you play Sonic it is okay to hate you because you play Jigglypuff it is okay to find you a bad person because you play these characters in a certain manner in one way or another the community has found itself to be one of the most unwelcoming communities over time and this very same topic is what brings us to hungrybox who is the most hated player in all of Smash Bros history on the other hand when mango switched from pot to Fox he upgraded his sickness by a huge margin because in the realm of melee no character is lamer than Jigglypuff that's true because even though mango has always played a very interesting type of gameplay where he just kind of just tastes risk and just doesn't really care if he wins or loses depending on the risk of that play it didn't matter that he was switching to the best character in the game simply because he was switching from a character that everyone hated I mean most people will say things like I like mango as a person but I hate the care cuz I he plays but now he plays a sick character so now no one can really hate him anymore because you know he's a cool person right and then he plays a cool character to put it off [Music] so bored from anything I actually remember bringing up this clip on the channel a long time ago and I basically gave my opinion how disappointed is to me that the commentators were so openly biased I actually got some rows for my own comment section where people were saying things like well I don't care that it's unfair it is really boring and I don't have to respect in any capacity and that line of thinking is actually pretty dangerous in my opinion because in a lot of ways people are justifying the fact that it is okay to hate on these people boo them even on the commentary because they're boring to watch it almost feels to me like people are spectators in an arena back in the gladiator days and because they just want these gladiators to duke it out if they don't get the entertaining that they you know the sire they're gonna throw dirt rocks at the compares like y'all kill each other I mean my entertainment and I don't like to make that comparison at all because we're talking about a big a - community spectators often accuse her of being boring to watch and play these are many of the same points that melee players used to claim my brawl as an inferior successor that's actually a great point the very same people that hate on Ghibli but for whatever reason it is that Jigglypuff isn't merely because people in a lot of ways to have a vision of what Mela is for as much as I love mainly at the community and pretty much the game in a lot of ways probably my favorite smash game of all of them the way people tend to think about male in this extremely elitist and purest way really reminds me more of a cult than a community melee is this this how male is supposed to be played is it the characters are make Mae Lee great and everything that doesn't make Mellie great kills melee fundamentally at its core some of the mechanics are a lot of people to think that way are not very far apart from how people can't rationalize being racist or you know the meaning people or judging people in other ways that are seen and you know are awful obviously we're talking about in a much lower skill but it is still that very similar to an and it is stupid men also in 2013 independent filmmaker Travis Beauchamp would release the smash brothers documentary to critical acclaim the film would bring unprecedented exposure to melees underground scene and would go on to inspire a new generation of players to compete in the coming years even though the smash for that community for me is the most influential piece of media ever released with this mash one thing that I've always hated about the smash bros dummy and I know really enjoy it is the way import rate brawl they have melee players that never really enjoyed brawl describe bro the footage views show brawl in its worst light and a lot of ways they portray bro as an objectively bad thing rather than this is what these people that don't like bro think about and because this match was the community has always been so influential and so widely spread and pretty much meant that a whole bunch of casuals that never really had any preconceptions about bro we're told pretty much by the narrative of that episode well for all seems like a bad thing so I should probably dislike bro as well mango hosted a now infamous reddit AMA on which hungrybox voiced some scathing remarks this is actually one of the highest levels of drama that there have ever been in smash what it boils down to is that mango one evil and he made an AMA on a general subreddit because you know it was kind of like well I'm the best smash player whatever whatever and it was pretty much address that cares on people that didn't really know what was going on mango has always had this kind of image where he's pretty much a dick but because his charm stat is all the way maxed out he always managed to make you kind of appreciate the way he says it or maybe he makes you laugh while he's saying all these crazy remarks but in a way he ends up being a very likable person despite all the insanity that he says now in this AMA people didn't really know the way he was so obviously he came off as very arrogant but drama really started to happen when hunger bugs pretty much dropped this an entire wall of text which pretty much just puts in an entire context of why hunger boats and mango never really got along we already talked in portion about why a big reason hungry bugs get so much hate it's because he plays the lamest character in the game well one thing that people really need to stop to think about is that also another reason why hunger box is so hated is because he was the greatest rival and the greatest enemy of mango who is the most well-liked when these two images collide together then you have what is known as probably my opinion the biggest beef in almost mash more often than not mango fans made it a point to hate on hunger bugs it also doesn't help that both hungry bugs in mango pretty much hated each other for years but it is this reddit post and only gave people a lot of context as to how hungry bugs felt all these years because for a big portion of time while these two people were hating on each other hungry buzz kind of kept his remarks mostly to himself or maybe in private but in this post he kind of led everything out you had the attention of the mainstream and you had the attention of the smashers which pretty much led to one of the scandals analyst math about how mango had disrespected him for his entire career mangoes response come up and get me initially people did not respond well to hunger box's remarks both from a smash bros perspective and a general mainstream perspective in a lot of ways it seemed like hungry bucks was trying to rob mango of the spotlight and make him look bad and bring up the early laundry where you shouldn't have but when mango respondent which to this point in time is one of the most disliked comments and all of that general subreddit for AMAs pretty much got everybody on the side of hunger bugs people for I want to say the first time were able to kind of just be on a hungry bucks aside and say wow this looked like it wasn't a good idea about hunger box to do this but based on mangoes response then it looks like he's right hungry box started developing a penchant for making ridiculous comebacks these clutch displays reminded everyone of the skill and earned him the moniker of clutch box but improbable comebacks were the only dramatic traits of H boxes play much like his in-game character H box too was a bit theatrical and emotional during this time he was most often characterized by his explosive pop offs after close wins perhaps it was his way of confronting the growing pressure from melees new wave of spectators the combination of his God status and defensive playstyle caused many fans to actively root against him now keep in mind throughout this video I pretty much portray hunger bugs as someone who don't know wrong as someone who's friends with hunger bugs I'm not afraid to admit that hunger bug has done his fair share of bad things but I firmly believe that despite the things he's done none of it deserves the amount of hate that he really gets in the end more often than not this hate is compounded and multiplies because of the fact that he plays Jigglypuff and because of the fact that he's often being the enemy of the biggest fan bases of the community that was in a similar spot I felt the very same dynamic that he had and mainly I felt in a smash for pretty much almost feels like a mirror example really and you can draw a lot of conclusions from an allies and how close these things we're which is why I've always been a fan of hunger most essentially because I'm like well we're like the only two people in this camp really and this camp only has two people that we gotta stick together you know what I mean but when it came to hunger bugs popping off hunger bugs winning is often his credit he's only winning because he's the only one playing lame they pretty much discredit his win as non-valid so when a person wins when defense think of it as non-valid the fact that they pop off when winning further proves their point in their own eyes but it also makes them more upset because they feel that he doesn't deserve to win so he should not be able to pop up he doesn't deserve to pop up he doesn't get to because in their eyes he never deserved the win in the first place people have never had an issue with mango doing any type of top-up and while I can't see the argument of hunger bugs popping up too much I think the concept of demoknights in a person because they're happy that they're successful in a field that is so competitive and so stressed was being the best in the world in a single field it is by far the bottom is bottom of the barrel take why we're going to demo NIH's someone because they're too happy that they won in a stressful scenario it just seems like the stupid as a hell's to have an opinion on he learned how to adapt to the spotlight 2015 featured the debut of he'll hungrybox where he learned to embrace his role as melees villain hungrybox pretty much learned the concept that if people want him to be a villain some bad which is one of my biggest problems when I compete in smash 4 people wanted me to be the villian people pretty much painted me both the commentators which I've always had a problem with the commentators always painted me as a more boring player so therefore everyone wants me to be the villain therefore everything I say is said under the villain voice I can't be any other role might as well embrace it and it's the same crossroads that hungrybox was forcing but neither him or I wanted to ever be hated in any capacity and I don't think people have ever really considered the amount of trauma that it can cause to get this much hate I've seen hungrybox at extremely low points and for myself I pretty much have suffered through very very extreme depression because of everything that happened within my smash was career I've tuned it out something recently along the lines of like pressure kills your passion in a lot of ways I feel like the pressure that I got from the way I was treated as much work very much killed my passion for smash as a whole people never really think before that a dude maybe we should dial it back maybe this person is a person just you know like me maybe they have emotions as well maybe they're not just a Twitter profile with a lot of followers right the producers decided to replace hungrybox with a cardboard cutout of robots an amusing prop but also a disturbingly accurate metaphor of how many in the smash community view him it looks like you might know something about I don't know no way don't know any of you guys have any experience hanging out with them I'm not entirely sure what to say because I feel like I know hungrybox more than I know one that's actually an excellent point not a lot of people know Huang because one himself the man behind hunger books doesn't actually talk about his personal life very much and I believe a big reason behind that is pretty much as a self defense mechanism you see when you talk about yourself you open yourself for people to criticize you for things that are more personal and one of the very first things that I always did to defend myself through my waves of hate was that I talked less and less about myself and I made myself sort of a character on the internet I was zero I wasn't Gonzalo I was zero this is what people see of zero this is what I want people to see of zero and these are the things that I can control and because I have feel like I have more of a controller situation I can control the narrative a bit more and I feel like I'm more unattached from everything that is going on and it allows me to feel more okay with getting hated on I feel like a big reason why hunger bug isn't nearly as known for a lot of people as one or how he really is it's because he's pretty much defended himself with it from someone that's really gotten to know one he's significantly different and a lot wiser than people realize and also really shows the constant a lot of people that I hate on him don't even know him they're so open to hate in someone that they have absolutely no information on things at home weren't much better for him either once domestic life was often thrown into turmoil by his father who would mismanaged his family's wealth and outright abandon them in pursuit of his own fruitless business ventures Juan's complex relationship with his father and the world around him ultimately created the competitor you see today for better or for worse in a lot of ways the story of hungrybox is extremely motivational he's an immigrant that came from South America there's someone that is from South America matter of fact the country that is right next to Argentina Chile I can tell you that being poor done there is on another level facing the hardships of living down there and in coming to America at a young age or for me for example as a teenager really isn't understood by a lot of people and I can't tell you in words how difficult it was to adapt myself to the culture adapt myself to society and essentially fight up against the system that ultimately is against you and hung up said everything stacked up against him he had family problems he had issues in his one hobby which was smashed originally escape from the awful life that he had and that's how I felt a lot of times smash was my escape and to be hated on and destroyed on on the one thing you felt confident about can really mess with a person on a psychological level but to take all that and succeed it to become arguably one amalias greatest players currently the best player in the world who then also grab that and become a successful businessman on the side because hungrybox doesn't just do smash bros stuff or streaming stuff he also runs successful business on the side so then also be the best player in the world while also getting an engineering degree and working a side job you don't understand the level of hustle the hunger bugs had to do to do all of this and I know at this point in time I sound like hungry bugs his biggest fan but I just want to put into perspective how hard as men have to work and if people can't stop to look at that and say wow this man is inspirational there is so much more that goes on than him just camping in a video game and it's really upsetting to me that people just see that and that is it it's common for sports or games to generally dislike their most dominant competitors but in all these cases most of the hatred never strays far from the confines of the competitive landscape you hate Tom Brady when he destroys your favorite team in the playoffs but if you saw him walking down the street you probably want his autograph in melee the hatred for hungrybox has progressed far beyond a simple competitive rivalry a large fraction of the melee community seem to treat hungrybox with utter contempt a lot of this comes from the idea that by simply being the number one player hungrybox is killing the game there's a lot of reasons that people justified the hunger bugs hate a big reason is that he's often being the biggest enemy of the biggest fan bases but that also the fact that he plays the lamest character so then obviously all of this combined means that we have to hate hunger bugs my perspective I know has always been that he doesn't deserve the level of hate that he gets and also that a lot of the things that he's done well some of them have been pretty bad none of them really warn the amount of hate that he gets people often justify these things to throw a crab while he's playing justify these things to bother him or harass him in person it's to the point that he often feels unwelcome at these events people just define anything however small things are to pretty much mean well he deserves that and that to me shows how unforgiving people can be for someone that's out there and puts their life out in public as much as you know hungrybox or myself or any other person that you know has a job on internet you know people get to see or false get to see your mistakes but no one gets to see the mistakes of the audience judging people are human and people make mistakes people can do bad things and that doesn't necessarily mean that they will forever be a bad person there is such a thing as growing there is such a thing as learning from your mistakes standing there on a desks and acting like no one makes mistakes and no one can learn from their mistakes is one of the biggest toxic mindsets in my opinion I have been a terrible person in the past and I have been trying for years to grow as a person to mature to learn from the things that I've done to become a better man but to act like that doesn't exist and there isn't value in that it's so debilitating and so disingenuous so this is pretty much what I felt like I had to add to this essentially hungry bugs movie it really touched the nerve on a lot of ways and I really allow me to talk about like the concept of hate and a lot of the very bad things that this masters community does a large now keep in mind a lot of these things I bring them up essentially because the only way to prove sometimes is by obtaining criticism this is why I always tell you if I did something wrong please criticize me and in the same vein I want to also change things the only way that things can change is by talking about them I truly believe that the only way for people to grow and become better people is by allowing them to do so this is why I don't believe in things like cancer culture it doesn't allow for people to grow it just means that you made a mistake in the past and your life is over that is not a healthy way to think I hope this video helps you guys not just realize a bit more about hungry bugs as a person but also kind of helps you guys understand one thing about society as a whole is that by demoing and not allowing people don't make mistakes is no way to live and this goes for me it goes for you and it goes for everyone I hope you can all grow and become better people and I hope this video opens the dialog for them I also really recommend you guys watch the original video it's an entirely because it is so interesting nonetheless I hope you guys enjoy today's video and I'll see you guys around tomorrow bye bye [Music]
