The Miracle In The Desert - California's SALTON SEA!

i'm mike with the wandering wolf and this is the salton sea [Music] you are looking at a remarkable idea an idea that has intrigued and attracted and literally thrilled thousands upon thousands of men women and children and you my friends are about to witness this idea become a reality for this is the story of the miracle sea in the desert the salt and safe not long ago it was raw desert if anyone had told you three decades ago that this vast nearly deserted land would be worth two thousand to three thousand dollars a front foot you would have probably laughed at such a fantastic idea we are here at bombay beach small little town right here on the salton sea we're gonna head down here check it out it's supposed to be really cool lots of art and different things let's get going welcome to the salton sea located near the border in southern california this area is once a lavish resort destination for the stars with millions of dollars of development getting put into this place back in the 50s and 60s but around 30 years ago something went very wrong as salt levels rose over the years runoff from the farms upstream ran into the lake introducing disease and killing off just about everything here plants animals and tourism alike and this is what is left desolate sun bleach desert with salty relics of what was here before so this is bombay beach and there are less than 300 people living in this city town and uh there used to be a lot more i'm standing in the ruins of what used to be part of the city they've built a dike over here that protects the city from rising and lowering flood waters which has happened over the years that's what destroyed this area that we're standing in now back behind us over here behind the dikes is the rest of the city maintains a population between two and 300 at times it is very desolate very dry and it is right on the salton sea the salton sea sits the very bottom of the san andreas fault which means all kinds of weird geological phenomenon happen here mud pots are pretty common around these parts magma running near the surface evaporates water underground causing it to rise up and spit mud everywhere sometimes the mud splashes up enough to make a mini volcano there's also a massive moving sinkhole on the right side of the lake which is encroaching on a very important section of highway and train tracks scientists are still not sure why it's moving the way it is but as it gets closer to shutting down a major farm route it has become a huge engineering task just to keep the area safe we are out in the middle of nowhere um on the salton sea and it is brutally hot and muggy out here too everything's dead we're trying to um get carcass beach so you guys can see that but we are like out out in the middle of nowhere [Music] yeah we'll make it though tim's got the drone up and he's gotten out of route and we'll give it a go we can walk it we'll walk it [Music] but that's all for now so even though the salton sea has actually been dying out since the 50s there's a lot of different types of uh of things out here that grow and have been thriving dates and different types of fruits as far as we can see there's green around us so you can obviously tell that something's working right out here might have to try some of those later on there is no greater american heritage than the right to outdoor living to fresh air and the space to enjoy the outdoors with your own vision you can enjoy such things now in the present and also be part of the future many young people of today do not have the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors you by investing in your own land can give yourself and your family and future generations the chance to take advantage of a heritage you might otherwise miss thank you guys so much for joining us out here on this episode at the salton sea we had an amazing time filming here remember hit that like button subscribe and if you get a chance share the video it really helps us grow stay safe and have a great week [Music] you
