The Main Thing (Romans 13:8-14) - Pastor Daniel Fusco

[Music] [Applause] [Music] so it's so important for each one of us to always know what's the main thing I mean if you think about in every area of your life there is the if you get this one thing right you get the bulk of it right like I remember for me before I was called into ministry and before I really fell in love with playing music as a career my life really revolved around baseball when I was in Middle School in high school that was my thing and I'll never forget it because I remember when I went to high school it was a big thing to try and make the the high school baseball team in a really good team and I remember as a freshman in high school end up being the starting catcher on a freshman team and by the end of my freshman year they bumped me up to junior varsity and I started playing some junior varsity games and so sure enough was I moved into my sophomore year my second year of high school there was there was two guys ahead of me in the kind of the depth chart for catchers and they were both a year older than me so I was a sophomore they were juniors and so I remember like I was hoping that I would be able to play on the junior varsity start because there was these two guys ahead of me and so sure enough I ended up starting junior varsity for the first couple games and I remember that the guy who is a really really good catcher he got the starting knob for the varsity team and so and within two games he kind of fell apart as a catcher he got hurt and so I was like oh okay that's a problem and then so the guy who is the second string catcher got in there in the third game and and literally fell apart as a player in in varsity and so I remember I the the coach called me in now at this point the coach of the of the team was not exactly the nicest person like they would let him be a coach today back in the day he was like a normal coach just screamed at you all the time and and so today that'd be illegal but back in the day that's who he was and and I never he called me in his in his office and he said hey listen I'm gonna bumping you up to varsity you're gonna start this week and I was like oh okay and and he's like and I there's just one thing that you have to do you can't give up any free bases and he's like and the idea was is that as they catch her my job was just to make sure I kept the ball in front of me and I just didn't give anyone free bases because the the two guys who have been performing for the four games had given lots of free basis and so I'll never going into that first game and you know when you when you they said my school when you went on the varsity team all of a sudden they gave you like nice uniforms like button-down uniforms now I'm not like a button-down kind of guy but I remember put on that that uniform with the buttons and everything it wasn't like the old one had like you know half your half the the logo was ripped off of it and you know it's like it's like it's a nice uniform ever put that thing on and being really freaked out you know and I mean like how am I gonna do and on that I'll never I'll never forget because that we the game starts and a guy gets a single he's on first base and the coach just looks that means like don't mess up that's what he says that's all excessive you don't mess up and so sure enough guy takes off first pitch stealing second you know what I did I threw the ball in the right field just like I was shooting for a second base but it kind of went a little right-center guy got an extra base and literally the manager just kicked the the watercooler over it's like that was his response to that I was like and then you know you know how it goes when that happens like I just I just failed that the main job that's what I did first first go around and I just kind of hung my head and I thought to myself this is gonna go bad right as I sure enough we made that the inning that guy ended up scoring from second base so I that was on me and and and I remember I got got to the dugout and the coach just wouldn't even the manager would even look at me he was so angry and then the pitching coach came over to mean he said okay you got that out of your system right and I'm like I hope so and he's like you better got it out of your system just you go play your game and so sure enough you know the next inning guy walks first batter I'm like ah here we go and I add and and the first baseman this guy named Vinnie who I'd known my whole life and he came up he called timeout and he he said listen this is varsity you belong here don't worry about it and so sure enough the first pitch the guy on first base was leaning too far I picked him off a first base as the catcher and I was like oh yeah game on now you know like we're five and and it's funny I ended up you know point B in the diversity catcher from then on out but I bring it up because it's like that was an important lesson like as a catcher your job is ought to give anyway free basis right now if you look at every area of your life there is this is the most important thing that if you get this thing right like like for those of you who are are married you know as a husband or a wife it's like what's the main thing in your marriage think about it you know like for a lot of us we get these things wrong like we we think it's about something other than what it's really about you think about your job what is the main thing that you're supposed to do at your job see oftentimes we get in trouble because we make the thing that is the main thing we don't make it the main thing we make other things the main thing right and so today I want to share a message with you that if you've been around church at all this is not new information and I always say that my job as a pastor is not to tell you new things my job is to remind you of the things that you already know because the Spirit of God is within you that's my job if I'm telling you something that you've never heard before ever it means you're not either reading the word or I'm telling you a lie the the big things are all where they're always there I think it's Alister Begg who always says that the main thing is the plain thing and the plain thing is the main thing and so today I want to give you like the main thing and if you're new to Christianity or if you're just kind of exploring who Jesus is you want to know these things that if you've been walking with Jesus for a while or for some length of time you're gonna want to make sure that like okay this is the stuff that my life is about the big idea so in order to get at this I want you to open up in your Bibles to the book of Romans chapter 13 Romans 13 we're gonna be taking verses 8 to 14 today so Romans chapter 13 so if you brought a Bible with you dated church open that baby up we're gonna be reading it studying it breaking it down as we always do if you didn't bring a Bible with you today to Crossroads don't worry because all the books on the seats in front of you those are all Bibles they're not coupon books they're better than coupon books because if you believe within that book you have eternal life so it's way better than a coupon you know you get a free entree with a coupon book you can't get eternal life with a coupon book does that make sense so I just made all that out don't mind me and if you have it's still early and if you have a mobile device if you don't write paper you don't want to open a Bible just to open up your phone or your mobile device and type in Romans chapter 13 verses 8 to 14 I want you to be able to read along with you I'm not just making this stuff up this is what God's Word the Bible teaches and so if you're new to the Bible the book of Romans is in what we call the New Testament about the last third or quarter of your Bible and and it really begins with the four tellings of the life of Jesus the Gospels Matthew Mark Luke and John and the book of the Acts of the Apostles which tells about that first generation of leaders after the death and resurrection of Jesus and then Paul's letters which Romans is the very first one so it begins this way it says Romans chapter 13 verse 8 oh no one anything except to love one another for he who loves another has fulfilled the law for the commandments you shall not commit adultery you shall not murder you shall not steal you shall not bear false witness you shall not covet and if there is any other Commandments are all summed up in this saying namely you shall love your neighbor as yourself love does no harm to a neighbor therefore love is the fulfillment of the law so what's the main thing it's simple l.o.v.e it's simple it's love l.o.v.e now that that idea spelling it out that's a quote from my father-in-law Paul Dachau Berlin's dad I always I love my father-in-law I'm blessed had an awesome father-in-law and the number of times my father law says man it's all about the l.o.v.e you know there's a song about the hello so I won't look at the person that you say it's all about tell him the l.o.v.e when no one wants to spell this morning it's all about I thought about doing like a YMCA style l.o.v.e thing but then I thought that would be kind of weird and I'm definitely not the Village People I'm not the Village People even though and then rice with this weirdness let that thing pass but could it be honest the main thing in Christianity is love and what's amazing is is if there you ask people about Christians do they ever say that the main thing is love no and that's a big problem because it's not supposed to be that way right now listen we can't we don't control over everybody you are responsible for you are you keeping it simple are you loving people because look at what he says here he says o no one anything except to love one another so have no other debts or obligations except to love people now if you want not only financial wisdom but you want wisdom with people just get this thing right have no obligations to people except to be people who love one another for love is the fulfillment of the law jesus said it this way John chapter 13 verses 34 and 35 a new commandment I give to you that you love one another as I have loved you that you also love one another by this all will know that you are my disciples if you have love one for another see Jesus saying listen the commandment that I want to give you as my disciples is that you love one another as I have loved you now I want you to go love one another and that's an important reality we the idea of loving people our culture everyone loves everybody except they don't love the way Jesus loves so the problem isn't the concept of love the problem is the definition of love do you say I want you to love people the way that I have loved you see here's the deal our culture the the the overriding issue with love in 21st century America is that love is not considered something that is self giving it's something that you get so like people wait to receive love but Jesus says I want you to love with the love that I have and what I want to tell you is that your ability to love other people is not if they first love you your ability to love other people is because Jesus loves you and you are receiving all the love that you need from Jesus so now someone doesn't need to love you back for you to love them and my friend if we can get this then we get the whole thing the main thing the most important thing is that the love that Jesus has for you is truly satisfying to the soul so that you can love somebody even when you don't agree with them you can love somebody even if they don't treat you properly you can love somebody and not take vengeance on them or get angry at them because you realize that Jesus loves us even though we're flawed too so Jesus drives us into this experience and I you know I call this upward inward and outward right it's like God's love reaches us and then it moves through us the problem with the day and age in which we live is it's just it's just a love on the horizontal level and so we're gonna try and figure out how do we navigate loving one another when when neither of us are satisfied and so it becomes can I get what I want from you will you give me what I need but Jesus is talking about something different he's saying let my love satisfy you and then go and love everybody even if you don't agree with them even if you disagree with their lifestyle even if you disagree with their politics even if you can't believe that they root for that sports team right or what or whatever the issues of the day are it's simple what is it l.o.v.e how are you doing where the rubber meets the road with that at your school at your job with your neighbors are you keeping the main thing the main thing jesus said by this all will know that you're my disciples by the love that you have one for another how are you doing loving the family of faith your the body of Christ as a whole see it's always amazing to me because we always have this tendency to think it's just what's right around me but it's like not only am I called to love the local expression of of the BI of Christ but the greater expression of the body Christ okay I just say this to my crossroads family I love you all so much and I'm honestly honored that I get to be a part of this family let alone get to teach the Bible you guys are amazing you know I was talking I was praying just this week I said Lord I want the crossroads family to know how loved they are by you and the Lord said Daniel you have to keep telling them how much I love them and you need to love them you know I just love you all so much I'm so grateful for the journey that were on together you know because in the end of the day if I am a pastor at all my job is to to be a stand-in in a sense and under Shepherd for Jesus get down across for anyone since that's his job my job is to be able to explain it to you in a way that makes sense to show it to with my life at best but listen people will know where is disciples not by how good our theology is now don't get me wrong I'm interested in good theology I'm not handing it but sometimes in the name of good theology people love really horrendously they only about people who I believe just dig it if you don't believe the stick you are wrong and you you know there's those people who think that they're the only ones who Jesus is gonna let in heaven well I was talking to someone recently they were really up in arms because we don't teach out of the King James Bible I'm like listen in heaven Shakespeare's language is not the language of heaven and they got super mad at me so when I want quotes the Bible and heaven they're only gonna say these in the house we praise it to you Lord you know but like we but like in the end of the day like if you really love the King came from a praise God for that and if you if you dig reading and I am back and I am back pentameter then awesome but I saw someone's reading it what's the problem you know it's like we have this you know what happens is some times in the name of getting all the things right we get the main thing wrong my pastor John Henry corker used to say it this means that Daniel sometimes we're so right or wrong now I was just like whew that's a nasty one isn't it listen you get it right when you love because love is the fulfillment of the law and really it's Jesus's love that's the fulfillment of the law that we respond to you notice what it says next because look what it says verse 9 for the commandments you shall not commit adultery you shall not murder you should not steal you shall not bear false witness and you shall not covet now obviously this is the second table of the law of the Ten Commandments which you find in Exodus chapter 20 verses 13 to 17 and then also repeated in Deuteronomy chapter 5 verses 17 to 21 you know the Ten Commandments the 10 that were given by God to Moses on Mount Sinai on two tablets now what's interesting is that really they they call it the second tablet of the law because the first set of laws is all about a person's relationship with God and then the second tablets about a person's relationship with other people right and really what he's saying is that in each one of these laws right you don't commit adultery don't murder you don't steal you don't bear false witness you don't covet and then he says are all summed up in this same saying namely you shall love your neighbor as yourself which of course is a quotation from Leviticus 19:18 when when when they asked Jesus what the greatest commandment was he said Deuteronomy 6:5 you should love the Lord your God with all your heart soul strength in mind the second is like it you should love your neighbor as yourself so really what Paul he's agreeing with Jesus and he's saying the most important thing is that you love your neighbor as yourself now when of course when you love your neighbor as yourself and verse 10 it tells us that love does no harm to a neighbor so at the very least love is not doing bad it stated in the negative but if you look at all of those Commandments when you commit adultery you're not loving your neighbor right you're violating someone's marriage values you know when you murder obviously you're doing them harm when you steal you know when you steal from them that's doing them harm you know what's amazing is is that when you bear false witness even says do not covet which we don't think is doing someone harm because it's an internal thing but Jesus realizes that what starts on the inside makes its way on to the outside like no one ever no one ever committed adultery without first coveting someone else's spouse nobody ever stole without first in their heart coveting with someone else asks right and so all of this is summed up in this simple idea that the main thing is that you love your neighbor as yourself now as I always like to say who's your neighbor everyone's your neighbor won't you be my neighbor some of you don't know that reference but you will because there's a movie coming out soon so you'll know the reference for you young uns you y'all got said who was that guy's name mr. Rogers the man the myth the legend you know but listen it's simple but is it that simple so if your neighbor is everybody how are you loving somebody on the other side of the world who has a different religion from you how are you doing loving somebody who you don't agree with their sexual preferences how are you doing loving somebody who votes differently how are you doing loving the person who just stepped on your head to get a promotion that was you thought was rightfully or okay I could do this all day and make all of us super uncomfortable can i how you loving that person that you wake up next to everyday who you gave a ring to and you promised you'd love them no matter what and no matter what is feeling like a lot right now love your neighbor as yourself see really we're saying is you need to love them the way that I have shown you who you are you know that's why I wrote that book up word and order an outward about what does this mean how do we cultivate this type of living because it's the most important thing love now from there we see why love is so important now look at what it says now I'm picking up in verse 11 of Romans chapter 13 it says and do this knowing the time that now it is high time to awake out of sleep for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed the night is far spent the day is at hand therefore let us cast off the works of darkness and let us put on the armor of light now really and this is an important reality for us you and I have to remember that it's almost time it's almost time they may say what do you mean it's almost time listen to what Paul says and do this right love your neighbor as yourself knowing the time that now it is high time to awake out of sleep 4 out for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed so the Apostle Paul is saying yet to know what time it is because you have to realize it's time for us to wake up so Paul's using a metaphor of sleeping and waking nighttime and daytime right and he says for our salvation is nearer than when we first believed what Paul is talking about he's talking about the return of Jesus Jesus's return to the earth now for some of you right now you're like what or some of you are thinking see this is why Christianity doesn't make any sense who in their right mind could believe that Jesus who died 2,000 years ago is gonna come back today I mean you guys are nuts believe in fairy tales now if you're in either of those categories let me talk to you about this believing in the return of Jesus is not illogical if the resurrection is true it's much harder for Jesus to rise from the dead than it is for a live man who ascended into heaven to come back so like when I have people just someone just recently asked them I love my friends the guys I grew up with it and we're closed still and we don't agree on a lot of things like me I just I mean you are a smart rational you're a college educated you tell me you believe Jesus is coming back on my bro if he rose for the dead all bets are off like coming back is on the menu because he's alive you realize that right like that's not like shocking it's like I'm like so if Jesus is not in the grave right and if he ascended into heaven then if he wants to come back just like those angels told the Apostles he was gonna that's not a hard thing so it sits within to say that's it within the realm of possibility is giving the skeptical position way too much room but here's the deal if Jesus rose again and he did and you know how I know that he did because Christian II would have gotten anywhere if they could have brought them to Jesus's tomb and said there's his body this thing ends right there right and so it's not like so there would be no Christianity if they end 2,000 years ago this was already a hot topic they're gonna just work the thing out and they didn't work it out why because he's not in the tomb anymore right and because he ascends into heaven he's coming back and the truth of the matter is the day of Jesus's return is sooner than when you first believed now that's a reality that God wants us to have you have to realize that we live believing in the soon return of Jesus some people call it the doctrine of eminency that his return is imminent right and the idea is is that God wants us to have this healthy awareness that Jesus is coming back and every day that you wake up it's a new day you have to realize that Jesus's return is sooner than it ever was like I put my faith in Jesus almost twenty years ago and Jesus's return is twenty years sooner than it was on the day that I believed right now because of that that drives us to live a different way and really Paul says it this way in Philippians chapter 3 verses 20 and 21 he says for our citizenship is in heaven from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior the Lord Jesus Christ who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to his glorious body according to the working by which he is able even to subdue all things to himself now really what he's saying is there is that because our citizenship is in heaven we can't wait for Jesus to return because we know that when Jesus returned he's coming from heaven he's gonna transform our lowly bodies our earthbound bodies that it may be conformed to his glorious body so we get these bodies back but as I like to say tricked out with new features Jesus was still able to eat and he was able to walk through the wall and he was able to ascend into heaven I mean how cool is that I could eat Twinkies and being glory it's awesome to me like the whole thing just makes me so excited you know what I mean it's like it's like you know what someone come by an old clunker we used to call them a hoopty when I was growing up I had these friends they'd get these all hoop tees they put all these like nice wheels on them you know and I mean like they just like I was like I'll make us an ugly rust bucket door slam to the ground you know it's looking super they put these big sound systems in it that's kind of like it but way better what Jesus isn't inviting us into all right so the but the idea is that when Jesus comes back the work of the church ends in its way so that's why in a lot of ways this idea that it's almost time that drives us as a church family to live differently than we would normally they give you a couple examples of this it's one of the reasons why we have the TV ministry and the radio ministry and all the stuff we do on social media you know because literally we realize that lots of people won't come to church but they have televisions and computers and because we know it's almost time we're like we need to reach them with the gospel right where they are we can't wait for people to come to Crossroads oh it's amazing is is that every single month we see between 30 and 60 people say yes to Jesus from our television ministry literally it's like we're because we take the messages from here and then literally give altar calls at the end of every single TV it's funny so I was like I saw your TV show you do an altar call no no Mike I know why because Jesus is gonna come back I don't want to miss that bible information I want people to come to know Jesus I thank you for all of you who are involved in helping and supporting that there's some really exciting things coming on we're now we're at the opportune to potentially go on to major stations and by two minute time slot so I can do like a 2 minute message I'm like you know on like the news stations like Fox and CNN and trying to see them get on MTV and do this stuff and like you know we're tried it's not cheap but but listen if Jesus died on the cross man we're just like trust in the Lord's you know they really like Lord you want but why because the it's almost time like if Jesus came back today there's nothing restraining him from doing that can you imagine this is the last sermon I ever get to teach I mean could you imagine is the last day you ever get to love your kids or or tell someone that you care about them or share the good news it's one of the reasons why the church you know we just did that the whole national back to church dandelo love how God is using the crossroads tell me more cuz there's not enough times almost up no time to mess around do you make church like I don't want to bug people I wanna bug people I want to bug people into the kingdom oh good with that I don't want to be like I'm like on the highway to heaven you know what I mean I would have a big old caravan of busses with all these people come and have it you know I don't want to go fast I want to get as many people on board as possible but when you realize it's almost time you're not ashamed to invite somebody when you realize it's almost time you start to say to yourself getting the gospel out is important because it's time to awake out of sleep the night's far spent he says knows that if you're here today watching online here in our sanctuary in Vancouver if you don't know yet know Jesus listen now it's the time God loves you he's for you the only way you'll ever be happy is to know the love of Jesus no relationship will ever satisfy you no matter how awesome that person is no matter how cute they are no matter how rich they are no matter how many boxes they check off in the ideal significant other thing if you want those people who think that kids are gonna fulfill you come borrow mine now I'm just kidding I love my kids I love my kids and they're awesome kids and I think the world of my kids but guess what being a parent is not fulfilling in all the deepest ways it's a beautiful thing and it's from the Lord but guess what the only thing that's really gonna satisfy by you as Jesus and guess what if God has been tugging at your heart and God has been saying to you you need to get right with me you need to put your faith and trust in Jesus Jesus loved you he died for you you need my forgiveness if you're in that place but you've never said yes I want you to do it today and I want you to go follow Jesus into the waters of Baptism today why because the night is far spent the day is at hand now our salvation is near Jesus is gonna come back and when Jesus comes back a no decision is a no decision now's the time because he possible says the night is far spent the day is at hand therefore let us cast off the works of darkness verse 12 and let us put on the armor of light let us walk properly verse 13 as in the day not in revelry and drunkenness not in lewdness and loss not in strife and envy but put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision to fulfill its lusts of the flesh now it if it's simple that we should love and if we realize the time it's almost here the final step in this is you and I when to put on Christ when you put on Christ that's what God invites us to it and I get that right from verse 14 there but put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the flesh to fulfill its lusts so the idea now is that Jesus is spoken of his righteousness is spoken of like a garment that we get to put on and the idea here is that there is a difference between the way people live at night the darkness under the cover of darkness or what people do in the light now we just be honest for a second that was probably a more poignant picture about 40 years ago than it is today because we're at a cultural moment now where people aren't unashamed in the daylight to do what people would only do under cover of night in the past now we have people in the middle of the day I remember this just happened I took my son over to nashville tennessee because my grandparents were there and so we wanted to get a little time there and so sure enough it was a Saturday so I'm like let's go see downtown Nashville and as a musician as you know Mike Maness so because and it's the daytime I mean it was 11 o'clock in the morning but when we got to to downtown Nashville it was amazing because there was a foot big football a college football game that day and all the bars were full of people and people were acting insane and I got my 14 year old son there and I'm just like buddy I'm so sorry he's like what are all these people doing drinking at 10:30 in the morning I'm like sorry you know I got homeland was like why'd you do that I'm like it was happen in the morning I didn't think anyone was gonna be I didn't was a football game you know what I mean and those people were just acting nuts but the idea is that there are things that people do under the cover of darkness that they won't do in the light or Alize historically and the idea is that if you walk and love and if you realize that the time and it's almost time for Jesus to come back then you change the way that you live plain and simple I don't believe in the gospel of behavior modification I believe in the gospel of Jesus Christ that leads to a transformed individual behavior modification isn't the key a new heart is the key but a new heart leads to new actions and really what you find in these verses is that he's saying let us walk properly the way we ought to walk in the daylight and notice what he says here not in revelry and drunkenness which are sins of a lack of self-control or in temperance right so we have to make sure we have self-control right because revelry and drunkenness are both sins of excess right and then that leads of course not to lewdness and lust to sexual immorality because guess what God does care what you do with your body your body is not your own if you're in Christ even bought with a price I went and when God saves a person your body becomes the temple of the Holy Spirit and God doesn't want you putting that temple the Holy Spirit everywhere with everybody God cares about what we do with our bodies that's that that's see that's the lie of the day and age in which we live oh no what God care what you do with your body because God cares about you that's why and you're not your own but of course you have these you have this sins of a lack of self-control or in temperance which leads to sins of sexual immorality which of course lands where look at what it says not in strife and envy and lands in places of conflict [Music] right quarrelsome nests contentions see when a person puts on Christ the fruit of the Spirit is self-control you realize that the act of lovemaking between a husband and wife is the highest act of worship and the Covenant of marriage you've begun to realize that contentions in quarrelsome is antithetical to a peacemaker and he says for put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the flesh now I love this because really what's being said here is that for you and I you're either in Christ or you're in the flesh as the old saying goes you're either a saint or you ain't you know and everything like it's real it's simple really and if you put on Christ because you're in Christ you make no provision for the desires of the flesh why because really what God wants to do for each one of us is God wants our desires to be lined up with his desire so if you're living in the desires and and the passions of the flesh the life and rebellion against God then you can't be living for what God is passionate about the desires of God's kingdom you have to you have to choose your allegiance wisely but when you put on love and you realize that it's almost time that Jesus is gonna come back you begin to realize my passion needs to be aligned with my God's not my own and what happens is when you begin to live and fulfill the lusts of rebellion against God it takes all the energy and the passion and it dissipates it for nothing when it's supposed to be used and channeled into the things that God cares about when you spend all your money getting numb through drugs and alcohol whether they be legal or illegal that's money and energy that is being dispelled that God wants you to use for higher more eternal pursuits when you take the energy of your body and you use it in promiscuity you just spell that energy that God wants you to leverage for the cause of the gospel amongst people who need to hear it when you take the giftings and the talents that God has given you and you use it for totally and purely selfish ends you take the energy that God wants you to use those talents and gifts that he's given you and he wants you to push that into the work of his kingdom to build up the people of God so that the body is strong so that the glory of God might cover the earth as as the waters cover the sea and when you put on Christ you put on a whole new way to be human a whole new way of living and if you were here today and you're already in Christ brothers and sisters let's keep it simple it's about l.o.v.e have no debt to a person except to love them and remember the time is almost up the time is short it's time to wake up and when we wake up we put on Christ we don't put on rebellion we don't waste the energy the resources that God has given us we channel them God what does pure love dictate how I should live what does true love tell me I ought to live like and if you're here today in Christ listen you are saved we got to make sure that we're saved and we're truly woke truly awake with our eyes through the open truly understanding what this is all about and if you're here today and you're not yet a follower of Jesus I could not praise God more that you're here today you know why because you heard the main thing one the only way you're gonna
