father the son and the holy spirit you're buried with christ and oliver you're resurrected unto new life guys help me celebrate 25 people going public with their relationship with christ yes that is so exciting appreciate that i'm telling you nothing is better than to see baptisms [Music] because baptisms represent what happened in christ or what happened in our life when we accepted christ as our lord and savior you know people have grown up in church all their lives and many times don't understand what it actually represents how many of you know what the water represents the water represents the holy spirit because the holy spirit is the living water but more importantly in first corinthians chapter 12 verse number 13 it tells us that by one spirit we've all been buried into the body of christ notice what it says for by one spirit are we all baptized into one body what's the one body the body of jesus christ whether we be jews or gentiles whether we be bond or free and have all been made to drink into one spirit so what we're saying is we accept jesus christ as our lord and savior the holy spirit baptizes us into the body of jesus christ and that's why paul wrote that we're crucified with christ nevertheless we live yet not i but christ who liveth within me in the life i now live i live by the faith of the son of god who died for me and gave himself for me and that's the faith that we have so what we're doing is we're proclaiming what jesus christ has done we believe that we had that moment of faith in jesus christ and confessed to him as lord that the holy spirit immersed us into the body of christ and because jesus is the son of god he has the characteristics of god he's omniscient and omnipresent he also has the characteristic of i'm getting a lot of feedback i don't know if you can hear that but i can i think monitors need to be turned off but anyways he also has the attribute of infinitude which means he can die for everyone but it also means because he is omnipresent he can die for past sins and future sins and so the moment that you accepted jesus christ as your lord and savior with that attribute of on omnipresence it means that the holy spirit today immersed us in the body of christ 2000 years ago he died on the cross for us and we were in christ when all our sins were paid for god raised him from the dead and so that's what we're proclaiming that's what we believe and it's so exciting to see people who are accepting jesus christ as the lord and savior but that's not what we're talking about this morning this morning we're going to be taking communion a lot of people don't like that and when they hear that the church is taking communion they stay at home i hope those who are online with us don't say oh he's going to talk about communion we're going to take communion i'm going to check out don't do that i'm going to do a teaching before we take communion and i'm going to explain what it is and why we should be taking communion so if you're at home and you want to take communion and maybe you don't have any grape juice and you don't have any crackers that's okay take whatever you have whether it be water or bread whatever it is and you can participate with us as i teach on this this morning now the reason that the majority of people skip out on the lord's supper when they find out the church is actually going to be doing the lord's supper is because they're fearful of it most people grew up fearful of the lord's supper especially if you were raised baptist we're fearful because of the warning that's given in first corinthians chapter 11 verse 27 this is what it says wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread and drink this cup of the lord unworthily shall be guilty of the body and blood of the lord now most christians don't know what it means to eat and drinking worthily all they know is they don't want to be guilty of it oh no so as a result most christians play it safe and they just don't participate they don't partake of the lord's supper and i'll be honest with you for the first 20 years of my life i never participated in it and then even after i got saved at the age of 20 i didn't participate in it until i actually became a pastor and studied this yeah well this morning what i'm going to do is i'm going to teach you what it means to eat the bread and drink the cup unworthily my hope is that once you understand what paul was saying you will participate in the lord's supper in fact you'll actually look forward to it so let's find out what paul was trying to teach us turn to first corinthians chapter 11 verse number 27. in first corinthians chapter 11 paul is teaching on the lord's supper because the corinthians were not partaking of it in the way they should be they weren't doing it properly so he comes in and he teaches on the lord's supper notice what it says in verse number 27 wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread and drink this cup of the lord unworthily shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the lord now i want you to underline that word unworthily unworthily is translated from the greek word anakisios and it means improperly or an improper manner i don't know why but unworthily sounds a lot worse than improperly how many you know what i'm talking about and one it's you're not worthy and the other way you're just not doing it the right way but i want you to understand anacos actually means improperly or an improper manner you see there's a proper way in which to partake of the lord's supper and there's an improper way in which to partake of the lord's supper verse 28 explains the proper way and verse number 29 explains the improper way so we're going to look at the proper way first because that's what paul talks about first so look with me if you would in verse 28. paul says this is the proper way but let a man examine himself and so let him eat of that bread and drink of that cup this again is the proper way into which in in which to partake of the lord's supper according to paul we're supposed to examine ourself before we eat the bread and drink the cup now the word examine is translated from the greek word documentzo and it was used to describe the testing process of metals and the testing process was supposed to separate the good from the bad so that you could salvage the good while discarding the bat let me say that again if you had a metal clump and you wanted to make sure that it was all of one metal and didn't have any impurities you would do this testing process you would heat it up until it began to melt and then what would happen is the impurities would float to the top which we call dross you can scoop it away and all you have left is that pure metal well if someone gave you goads you want to make sure that they didn't add something to it so you had this testing process document so you'd heat it up and the reason you were doing that is you wanted to separate the good from the bad the gold from all the other impurities that were in it so the whole purpose of the test is to get rid of the impurities now used in the context of first corinthians 11 documentzo refers to examining yourself for the purpose of discarding sin for the purpose of getting rid of the impurities in your life now let me make a very important point the whole purpose of examining yourself is not to eliminate you from participation it's not to disqualify you the purpose of examining yourself is to discard the sin so that you can participate you see if the purpose of examination was to disqualify a person from participating we'd all be disqualified because there's not a person here that doesn't have sin in their life it might not be a sin of what you're doing but it could be the sin of omission maybe the holy spirit has told you to witness to someone you haven't done it well if you know to do right you don't do it it's a sin according to the bible that's a sin of omission there's not a person here that doesn't have sin in their life so the whole purpose of examining yourself is not to disqualify you from participating in the lord's supper but it's for the purpose of getting rid of the sin in your life the impurities so that you can participate now i know how most christians think they think that they just need to play it safe and not participate in communion then i don't have to worry about eating and drinking unworthily and eating and drinking damnation upon myself right just don't take any chances so the safest thing to do is simply not participate not partake in the lord's supper the only problem with that is god commands us to participate if you're a christian god is commanding you to partake of the lord's supper yeah that's right and i'll prove it to you underline the words eat and drink in verse 28 it says but let a man examine himself and so let him eat of that bread and drink of that cup those two words are written in the imperative mood which means that god is commanding us to eat and drink it's not an option it's a command we're commanded to take communion the whole purpose we examine ourselves is to get rid of the impurities so that we can participate it only takes a second for us to recognize many times the sin that we have in our life i'll be honest with you you know what sin you're involved in you know what you're doing right and what what wrong you're doing i do too i know there are things i should be doing and things i shouldn't be doing so when i examine myself immediately the holy spirit just shines the light on that and i know what those impurities are and of course first john tells us that if we confess our sins he's faithful and just to forgive us our our our sin so all we have to do is confess that and guess what god's faithful and just to forgive us and now we're ready to do what to eat and drink of that cup now why are we commanded as christians to partake of the lord's supper does anyone know well i'll tell you why it's because every time we take communion we're proclaiming the lord's death in other words we're remembering what christ did for us and that's very important as a christian look at verse 26 i know we're kind of working backwards but i'm working through this in a logical sequential manner so we're kind of skipping over this part from one verse to another in first corinthians 11 but notice what it says in verse 26 paul wrote this for whenever you eat this bread and you drink this cup you proclaim the lord's death until he comes now listen to me because this is very important whenever we take time to remember what christ has done for us it also reminds us that we need to appropriate what christ has done for us most of us never appropriate what christ has done for us does everyone know what i mean by that you have appropriations committees in legislature and their whole purpose is to make sure sorry let me take another drink of water their whole purpose is to make sure that the money that is supposed to go to projects is actually going there it's appropriations and so what we're doing is we're taking something that's meant for one thing and we're appropriating it for that thing it was meant for we're actually putting it into use we're applying it we're making sure that it gets there and it's done and so what i'm saying is christ has done certain things for you but if you don't appropriate it if you don't take advantage of it it does you no good i'll give you an example that everyone can understand jesus has died so that we might have eternal life and the bible says for god so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life it's for everyone but will everyone be saved no why because they haven't appropriated what christ has done for them they don't take what jesus has done and apply it to their life and so what we need to understand that whenever we take the lord's supper we're remembering what christ has done for us but more importantly we're going to appropriate it if he did this for me then i'm going to make sure that i'm making use of it and i'm doing what i should be doing with it everyone with me good you'll understand what i'm talking about in just a second now let's look at verse number 29 and i want you to remember that verse 29 explains the improper way to participate in the lord's supper we grew up hearing the unworthy way to partake but actually again that word means improperly so he's going to explain the improper way in which to partake of the lord's supper he says for he that eateth and drinketh unworthily eateth and drink of the damnation to himself not discerning the lord's body now i want you to underline that word unworthily it's the very same greek word that was used in verse 27 it's on the casios and it means improperly so verse 29 explains what it means to eat and drink improperly notice that the person who eats and drinks improperly is not discerning the lord's body look at verse 29 again you'll see what i'm talking about for he that eateth and drinketh improperly now edith and drinking a damnation to himself not discerning the lord's body so what is eating and drinking unworthily what is eating and drinking improperly it's not discerning the lord's body let me say that again but in a different way when we don't discern the lord's body we eat and drink improperly we eat and drink unworthily now let's find out what that means underline the word discerning in verse 29 for he that drinketh unworthily or improperly eateth and drink of the damnation to himself not discerning the lord's body now the word discerning is translated from the greek word diacrino and diacrinone means to make a distinction so what verse number 29 is saying is that when we don't make a distinction between the body and the blood we eat and drink improperly remember when jesus was at the last supper what did he do he took the bed bread he broke and said take eat this is my body paul's writing about that in first number first corinthians chapter 11. he's telling us how to properly do this and he says when we eat the bread and don't discern or make a distinction between the bread and the wine we don't make a distinction between the suffering of jesus and the death of jesus we eat and drink improperly you see there are two aspects of redemption and let me just say this that is not the texas longhorn that's how i say two arkansas stopped texas put them in their place it was more like this so there are but i can't do this we're talking about redemption there are two aspects of redemption spiritual and physical now jesus blood was shed that we might have eternal life in other words through the blood of jesus christ our sins are forgiven and we're born again spiritually and the reason jesus blood was shed is so that we might have spiritual redemption i don't know why but people don't understand why we're all the time talking about the blood of jesus christians don't understand that you get in the faith movement you know what they'll say you need to plead the blood of jesus they have no idea what they're talking about how many of you been told to believe the blood of jesus yeah how many of you are scared to raise your hand everyone that didn't raise their hand yeah let me explain what the blood is if if you go back to leviticus chapter 17 it's the priestly book it's explaining all the sacrifices and offerings and gen in leviticus chapter 17 verse number 11 this is what it says this is a great verse for the life of the flesh is in the blood think about this if you wound yourself and you drip blood out if you lose too much blood what happens you die the life of the flesh is in the blood you get an infection in your blood you're in trouble we're going to put you in the icu because your blood is is transferring all the things that your body needs yeah for the life of the flesh is in the blood and i have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls the blood is given upon the altar to make an atonement for you jesus died as an atonement for you but why is the blood giving us an atonement notice the last part the most important part for it is the blood that makes an atonement for the soul why because it's the blood that represents death the reason they they killed these sacrifices and took the blood and sprinkled upon the altar and on the great day of atonement they took it into the holy of holies and they sprinkled that blood upon the mercy seat is because the blood represents life and what it's telling you is you've sinned you deserve to die so these sacrifices are a substitute for you they're taking your place and they're dying as your representative they're dying as a substitute for you and when that blood goes on the altar it's showing that your sin deserves to die but instead of you in place of you the sacrifices die the blood represents life so when we talk about the blood that blood gives us eternal life but it's not the blood it's the blood that represents jesus died for us through his death our sins are forgiven and we're born again spiritually so the reason that jesus blood was shed was so that we might have spiritual redemption eternal life can i throw something at you this is kind of interesting to me the bible says that flesh and blood shall not inherit the kingdom of god shall not go to heaven when jesus was resurrected he said touch me see that i'm resurrected i'm who i said i am here thomas go ahead put your hand right here in this in this car right here on my side where they pierced me with the spear go ahead look look at the nail hose but you know he told him he didn't say i'm flesh and blood what did he say i'm flesh and bone why because blood wasn't what was giving him life the spirit of god was now this is a personal belief but i believe that when we are resurrected or raptured and transformed we have our extra-dimensional bodies we won't be flesh and blood because flesh and blood will not inherit the kingdom of god flesh and bone will our life will not come from our blood our life will come from the spirit of god now personal belief i just believe that because putting these things together and seeing what jesus said but what i want you to understand is when jesus took the cup of wine and he told them to drink this is my blood what he was telling is this represents my death i'm dying for you because you deserve to die but i'm going to die in your place it's all these people pleading the blood what you're really saying is you're pleading what jesus has done he's died for your sins and made you righteous he's given you eternal life through his death all right so the cup represents spiritual redemption eternal life on the other hand jesus body was broken so that we might have physical redemption you see jesus did much more than just die for us he also suffered for us he was scourged that we might be healed he was stripped of his possessions made poor so that we might be made rich in other words so we might have prosperity he was crowned with thorns so that we might have dominion he was pierced in his side so that we would have victory over afflictions he was nailed to the cross becoming a curse so that we might be redeemed from the curse of the law because the law says curses every man who hangs upon a tree jesus had to die on a cross because jesus had to become cursed under the law yeah in order for us to be redeemed from the curse of the law now this is what i want you to get when we don't make a distinction between the body and the blood of jesus we eat and drink unworthily or properly i should say on a casios which means improperly if you don't make a distinction between the body and blood of jesus you eat and drink improperly in other words when we don't make a distinction between christ's suffering and christ's death we eat and drink improperly or you could say it like this when we don't make a distinction between what christ did for our physical redemption and what christ did for our spiritual redemption but we lump it all together we are eating the bread and drinking the cup unworthily now let's get down to the nitty-gritty why is it considered improper to not make a distinction between the body and blood well i'll tell you why it's because we're only appropriating christ's death but we're forgetting that he also suffered for us so in essence christ suffered in vain he hasn't died in vain because we're appropriating his death but he suffered in vain because we're not appropriating what he suffered in his body remember jesus was scourged so that we that so that by his stripes we might be healed if we don't make a distinction between the body and the blood we're not appropriating it he was stripped of his possession so that we might have prosperity but if we don't make a distinction between the body and the blood we're not appropriating it he was crowned with thorns so that we could have dominion but if we don't make a distinction between the body and the blood we're not appropriating it he was pierced and aside so that we might have victory over afflictions but if we don't make a distinction between the body and blood we're not appropriating it he was nailed to the cross and became a curse so that we would be redeemed from the curse of the law but if we don't make a distinction between the body and the blood we're not appropriating it now let me correct some erroneous beliefs because some people will teach what i teach but they don't take it far enough the most misunderstood doctrine in the bible the most or i should say the least taught doctrine and that's what's the most misunderstood doctrine in the bible is the now but not yet doctrine how many of you know what the now but not yet doctrine is the now but not yet doctrine says that we are now living under the new covenant when jesus died for our sins and god raised him from the dead we are now under the new covenant that's why we caught refer to in the last part of the bible is the new testament testament testamentus actually means covenant it's the new covenant in jesus blood so jesus established the new covenant the only problem is as we read through the bible and we find out what the new covenant brings with it we see that we don't quite yet have it it's not yet being consummated does everyone know what consummated means if you don't take this this down because you need to know these words that i'm giving you consummate means the point at which something is complete or finalized jesus established the new covenant but it has not been finalized it's not complete yet and when will it be completed when christ returns when the rapture takes place guess what's going to happen this corruptible mortal body is going to change from a horrible body a physical body that fat bald sickness disease is going to be changed into a incorruptible immortal glorified body what does incorruptible mean not subject to sickness or disease what's immortal mean it means not subject to death what's glorified mean glorified is the pinnacle of perfection of whatever the created being was so i'm going to be the perfect specimen of alan nolan no sickness no disease no chance to die that's part of the new covenant i'll no longer have a sin nature but god's his will his word will be written on my heart without a sin nature yeah all of those things when does that happen when christ returns when christ returns we live in the millennium there'll be prosperity there won't be the curse there won't be affliction it'll be almost a perfect world the only thing that will keep it from being perfect is the people who made it through the tribulation who have children because they'll be born with a sin nature thank god we rule and reign with jesus and jesus will rule with the rod of iron but i want you to understand something the now but not yet says i'm living under the new covenant but it has not been completed it has not been finalized therefore right now even though jesus was scourged and by his stripes i am healed i don't have complete healing i keep putting on these glasses do you realize when jesus returns i will wear glasses i won't be bald i won't be fat yeah you'll still recognize me as alan nolan but you'll recognize me as the perfect alan nolan but that's not yet and so the doctrine of now but not yet says jesus has already established the new covenant but it has not yet been finalized yeah yeah so what can we hope for now if we're supposed to appropriate what christ has done how do we appropriate what christ has done well this isn't going to come up on the scriptures but if you have your bible look with me if you would in hebrews chapter 6. this is verses four through six what this is really talking about is is it possible to lose your salvation and then be born again in other words be born again again we're not talking about that i'm just gonna mention just a portion here notice what it says for it's impossible for those who were once enlightened and have tasted the heavenly gift and were made partakers of the holy ghost so this person's really saved it's impossible to once been enlightened in other words they realize who jesus is oh my he's the son of god he died for my sins god raised him from the dead and a taste of the heavenly gift what is the heavenly gift salvation salvation is a gift eternal life it's not something you earn and then he says this and we're made partakers of the holy ghost in other words the same spirit that raised christ the dead now dwells within us so is he talking about a saved person you bet you enlightened heavenly gift eternal life holy spirit living inside of him then he goes further and have tasted the good word of god oh yeah i came to church listen to pastor allen that's the good verdict now it's decent the good word of god is what's in here you've tasted it it's fed you man you couldn't get enough of it you were hungry for it and the powers of the world to come if they shall fall away to renew them again into repentancing they crucified themselves the son of god afresh we won't talk about what that means but i want you to see something it says and they have tasted not only the good word of god but they've tasted the powers of the world to come what are the powers of the world to come in other words they got a taste of what it's going to be like when jesus comes back how many you've ever been healed supernaturally now you taste it you haven't experienced the completion of it i've had healings in my body supernaturally still wear glasses someone comes up for healing we pray for them and it's a supernatural healing maybe they get healed of cancer but they still have hearing loss they still wear glasses why because we're under that now but not yet doctrine jesus established the new covenant but we're not going to see the finalized completion of that new covenant until christ returns but guess what the bible says we can taste it so we know that everything that jesus suffered was so that we could be redeemed so when he comes and we're going to have the physical body we also get physical redemption we're not just walking around with the spiritual body but we're going to have an incorruptible immortal glorified body and we're going to be redeemed from the curse of the law we're not going to have an adamic nature we're not going to have to experience afflictions because everything that jesus suffered we're going to be able to appropriate but not only that we will come to the point where we receive that in the new covenant yeah so here's the bottom line to properly partake of the lord's supper you have to appropriate both parts christ's suffering and christ's death if you don't christ suffered in vain do you understand what i'm saying he all you're doing is appropriating that he died for your sins and that's what most people do now i want you to notice what happens to those who don't make a distinction between the bread and the wine which symbolize the body and blood of the lord look back at verse number 29 notice what it says for he that eateth and drinketh unworthy eateth and drink drinketh the damnation to himself according to verse number 29 the result is we eat and drink damnation upon ourselves in other words we bring damnation upon ourselves now let me clear up a misconception contrary to popular belief those who eat and drink and worldly don't bring eternal damnation upon themselves just temporal damnation you see the word damnation in verse 29 is translated in the greek word crema and it means to sentence or to penalize but it does not mean eternal damnation in fact the greek word for eternal damnation is katakrama the prefix kata is added in order to intensify the root word prima so what this is saying is that those who eat and drink improperly bring temporal damnation upon themselves not eternal damnation and the other thing i want you to notice is they bring it upon themselves god doesn't put it on them some of you get all upset at god because you're going through a hard time and if you listen to god you know a guy would say he'd say you need to read proverbs people ruin their lives by their own foolishness and then blame god about it and then blame god for it most of the problems we bring upon ourselves yeah are you in financial problem probably brought it upon yourself got problems in your marriage probably brought it upon yourself got a problem with your kids probably brought up on yourself got problems with your friends you probably did something brought it upon yourself you ain't drinking properly god doesn't bring damnation on you brought it upon yourself that's what the scripture says so what is this temporal damnation that we bring upon ourselves well paul tells us in verse 30 notice what it says for this cause what cause eating and drinking improperly many are weak and sickly among you and many sleep that's a euphemism for they've died prematurely so what's the temporal damnation it's sickness afflictions and premature death you see had they made a distinction between the bread and the wine and the body and the blood the suffering of christ and the death of christ they wouldn't have been weak sickly or even die prematurely or there's a good chance they wouldn't have why because they would have been appropriating everything that christ has suffered for them you see christ has done everything for us but we have to appropriate it and it all begins by discerning between the body and the blood the suffering and the death now does it guarantee you're going to be healed of everything can you have enough faith nope because we live in it now but not yet but i do have a right to taste of the world to come and in faith i know that one day when christ returns the new covenant will be finalized it will be complete i won't have this corruptible mortal body i will have an incorruptible immortal body so if i'm sick now i come to the lord and i said lord i know what you're going to do i know that you're going to finalize it that you're coming but i think i can have a taste of it now because of what you've done and i'm going to appropriate that by your stripes i was healed i'm inappropriate by the spear in your side your affliction i was delivered from this affliction i'm going through but you were made poor that i might be made rich in other words prosperous rich is a relative term kids don't get that most adults don't either but that's what we want to do today this morning as we come we're not just going to appropriate that jesus died for us we're also going to appropriate that jesus suffered for us and in faith we're going to appropriate it that it's either going to happen now or it's going to happen when christ returns but we know that because what christ suffered we will one day appropriate and in faith we're going to appropriate this morning because maybe we can taste of it in this life so if you would turn with me to first corinthians chapter 11 i'm going to read first corinthians 11 24. but before i do that remember jesus was scourged so that by his stripes we might be healed he was stripped of his possession so that we might have prosperity he was crowned with thorns so that we might have dominion he was pierced in his side so we might have victory over afflictions he was nailed to a cross so that we might be redeemed from the curse of the law remembering that let me read first corinthians chapter 11 verse 24 and when he had given thanks talking about jesus he broke the bread and he said take eat this is my body which is broken for you this is due in remembrance of me now here's how we do it properly i'm going to say a prayer and then all together we're going to appropriate individually what we need the bread represents his suffering what did he suffer that you have need of that you know that when he comes you will have it but just maybe you believe that you can taste it in this world to come well i'm going to say a prayer when you appropriate what christ has done for that in your life then you're going to break this new symbolism that christ's body was broken for you and me let's pray jesus i thank you so much that you came to die for my sins and give me eternal life and i so appreciate that but i also appreciate the fact lord that you didn't just come and die for us you also suffered for us and all the things that you suffered were for a purpose to redeem us in some way of the curse god i thank you lord that you're doing a healing in my body i thank you that you're giving me victory over afflictions lord as i do your will that you're giving me prosperity i thank you lord that we're going to get the finalized part we're going to get it all when you return but right now i'm believing because christ of what you've done i get to taste of it now because these are the things you suffered and i appropriate appropriate it today for the special needs in my life amen [Music] first corinthians chapter 11 verse number 25 says after the same manner also he took the cup you know you saved the best for last some of you eat your dessert first it's wrong you save the best for last [Music] jesus saved the best for last he started with the suffering it'd be great to have an incorruptible immo well you couldn't have an immortal body on this earth right now but an incorruptible body but you know what if we didn't get eternal life what good would it be so jesus saved the best for last after the same manner also he took the cup when he had sup sang this cup is the new covenant in my blood this do you as often as you drink it in remembrance of me i'm going to pray we're going to thank god for our salvation appropriate it if you haven't done that and then we're gonna partake of it in faith knowing that through jesus blood through his death we have eternal life why do we drink this because it's the best way to take it inside and say i believe that and you're applying it to you you're taking the blood of jesus and you're saying it's a part of me it's who i am because of what jesus did i have eternal life let's pray father i thank you for sending your son jesus and jesus i thank you that you were obedient unto death that even though you didn't want to suffer the things that you suffered or even die you said nevertheless not my will but yours god i thank you jesus that you were more than willing to die for our sin to suffer for us so that we might have eternal life i thank you for that and i appropriate that my trust is that your blood which represents your life was shed for me you died for my sins and because you died for my sins my sins are forgiven and i now have eternal life thank you for this in christ's name amen [Music] we almost always have an altar call when we finish or i finish my sermon but i don't when we do communion you want to know why because everything you needed i just presented and all you had to do was appropriate it and if you didn't appropriate in your seat it's not going to do any good to come to the front to get it [Music] if you want jesus christ as your lord and savior it's very very simple all you have to do is believe that he died on the cross for your sins and then when all your sins were paid for god raised him from the dead and then you have to make him lord of your life be willing for him to be your lord if you believe and you make him lord you're saved bobby [Music] what a wonderful sermon praise god let's give god a hand for all that he's done this morning a couple of announcements first for everyone who received communion your little cups when you leave the auditorium today you can drop them off in the little bucket and that's what you can do with them number two i got baptized today too so that's why i'm wet okay if you want to be baptized you saw the 25 people who went public with their decision to follow christ um some of you out there are probably saying i want to be baptized too well we can we can tell you how you can do that also i'll tell you in just a moment but first i want to say this we have a lot of groups and classes that are here on wednesday our prayer team they're going to come forward right here we love to pray we believe in the power of prayer so our prayer team is going to come forward we will see you next sunday god bless you you're dismissed [Music] [Music] a long time again before jesus was even born there was a woman named naomi she was moving back to bethlehem where she had grown up because her husband had died so it wasn't safe to stay where she was because she didn't have anyone to take care of her her daughter-in-law ruth whose husband had also died could have moved back to her home moab but instead she said to naomi where you go i will go and where you stay i'll stay so they moved to bethlehem together when they got there they had to find work the food back then farmers would be great in the field for the poor people to gather it was called drumroll cleaning so roots gleaned in a field owned by a man named buzz every day ruth would go to the field and pick up the barley that i dropped she worked really hard to feed her family boaz the owner of the field saw ruth one day and noticed how hard she had been working he told his workers drop a little extra barley for ruth he took good care of her he protected her and after a while he wanted to marry her and guess what she wanted to marry him too so they did eventually they had a son open who had a son jess who had another son and that son was david the one who killed goliath the king of israel the one who wrote the book of psalms and he was related to someone pretty special too jesus maybe ruth thought she was alone but god had big plans for her to be a part of jesus family and that's and that's and that's a part of god's story wow those kids told a pretty cool story about two women named ruth and naomi and how they followed god you know that leads to our big idea today we can follow god let's do those motions together we can follow god great job let's go hear some more about this story now do you know what this is it's a bible and it's all about god's story and how he rescued us in the beginning god made the whole world and everything in it he made the sun and moon and planets and stars he made forests and mountains and oceans he made all kinds of animals like lions and elephants and birds next god made his most special creation of all people like you and me the first two people were named adam and eve they lived in a beautiful garden filled with flowers and trees and fruit they got to spend time with god every day and it was good can you show good great job then something sad happened can you show me sad a snake lied to adam and eve and they believed him and disobeyed god then all the wrong things came into the world like sickness and sadness and death but the story doesn't stop there because even though adam and eve disobeyed god god still loved them just like he loves us and he came up with a rescue plan so that adam and eve and you and me could be close to god again and our rescuer is jesus can you show me the sign for jesus [Music] great job now there were two women ruth and her mother-in-law naomi naomi was part of god's family but ruth was from another place and her people didn't follow god the thing is even though ruth wasn't an israelite god still wanted her to be part of his family just like he wants everyone to be part of his family let's see what happens next god's story ruth so part of god's story is about a woman named ruth and it begins like this ruth lived in a place called moab and was married to a guy who was part of god's special family the israelites a few years later though ruth's husband died instead of returning to her family which would have been expected she stayed with naomi her husband's mom naomi tried to get ruth to go back to her family in moab but ruth wouldn't leave naomi no matter what in fact she wanted to go back to israel with her ruth said your people will be my people and your god will be my god so they both returned to naomi's home in bethlehem back then though it was hard for women to find work usually they had to be taken care of by their husband or a dad it's really hard to imagine that now but naomi and ruth might not have even known how they'd survive at first to get food ruth went to the fields of a man named boaz and followed his harvesters around if they dropped anything even just a piece of grain she picked it up this was called gleaming ruth worked from morning to night and barely even took a break boaz noticed he told his workers to leave behind some extra green for her to gather when naomi heard about this she was overjoyed because boaz was naomi's relative and what's called a family redeemer that meant that it was his responsibility to take care of his family if anybody was going to rescue ruth and naomi it was boaz kids we have a redeemer too it's jesus he's the one who saves us anyway this gave naomi an idea she told ruth to put on her best clothes and perfume and then go to the place where boaz was sleeping naomi said that once boaz had gone to sleep ruth should lay down by his feet now this may sound like a weird plan but it was actually really brave ruth trusted naomi and obeyed when boaz woke up he was surprised after all someone was lying at his feet that's not exactly a normal night when boaz asked who ruth was she said i am your servant you are my family redeemer now boaz understood ruth wanted boaz to marry her so that she and naomi would both be taken care of boaz agreed this was a huge deal ruth wasn't an israelite but she wanted to follow god anyway by marrying boaz she got to officially be part of god's family in fact ruth's great grandson was king david and many many years later jesus the rescuer was born into the same family line now because of jesus we get to be a part of god's family too so in case you missed it here's the quick version ruth was from moab her husband died ruth was left with his mom naomi naomi told her to go home ruth said no she went to israel with naomi they needed someone to take care of them ruth gleaned in a field boaz noticed he left extra grain for ruth naomi made a plan ruth obeyed it she wanted to marry boaz he agreed ruth became part of god's special family and we can too and that's a part of god's story so was ruth part of god's family yes did ruth follow god yes after that ruth moved to naomi's home and took care of her then she got married to boaz and they had kids and then they had kids and then they had kids and one day jesus the rescuer was born into ruth's family you see god doesn't just want some people to follow him he wants everyone to follow him no matter how old we are or where we live or even what wrong choices we've made we can all follow god so can we follow god if we're a kid yes can we follow god if we're having a hard time and we feel sad yes can we follow god even if things are difficult yes we can always follow god and do what he tells us to do let's pray to god now when we pray that means we talk with god and listen to him and he listens to us too you can say these words after me [Music] hey god we love you we get to be in your family help us follow you amen now let's worship we're going to give all our attention to jesus so let's stand up and sing as loud as you can while we sing this special song you tell me to stand up that's what i'll do you tell me to sit down i'll do that too all i want is what you want you want me to do cause i just wanna feel like you i'll do like you do like you do like you do i'll do like you do like you do like you do i'll do like you do like you do like you do i just want to be like you if you want me to shout out that's what i'll do if you want me to whisper i'll do that too all i want is what you want [Music] what you say i just wanna be [Music] you tell me to stand up that's what i'll do if you told me to sit down i'll do that too all i want is what you want you want me to do cause i [Music] [Music] like you [Music] [Music] like you do i just want to be like you [Music] [Music] you [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] you
