[Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] you [Music] good citizens of Westerville I come to you this day as our nation is on the precipice of war some of you here I fought with 15 years ago in the war with Mexico I commanded you then but I come to you today not as your officer but as your neighbor your friend and fellow patriot our nation is endangered by the same imperialism as it was when we march through Texas will we do no less when that danger is on our very soil ladies and gentlemen welcome with me now Bishop William him as many of you know prior to my founding the Otterbein college I traveled over 4,000 miles on the circuit in one year during my travels I saw much injustice and hate it has made me a man of strong convictions and I founded the college to serve others and have included within its walls men and women of all races I have made my voice known and shown my scorn for injustice and I will continue to stand against any law that makes it a felony to give food to a hungry slave or befriend precious men women and children who deserve freedom the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850 is inhumane it is absurd that giving shelter to a friendless man woman or child is a crime we may be bound by a man-made law but we are more bound by a lord given conscience Ohio has always been a free State it was the first state in the Union to outlaw slavery in its constitution we should stand as bold as the writers of that Constitution today many of you will join the Union Army and you shall be that bold may god bless you as you make your choice to stand for the freedom of all how can a Christian minister stand on that platform and support the breaking of our laws specially law that protects the property of a person the human being cannot be someone's property when a man-made law is in conflict with God's law there is no compromise we choose one way or the other on nothing but a freedom Crusader it says in Joshua 24:15 choose you this day whom you shall serve as for me in my house we shall serve the Lord [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] good day Jalen I understand you have a package for me um yes from clay wait here I'll record it my log books and you can be on your way hello Audrey hello Emery are you here to pick up a package from clay yes I am he said he'd be sending a few items home before he headed off to war I see which is something we need to talk about no we cannot talk about this right now no Audrey you know that now there are a lot of people here who need you it'll be fine we can talk about this later Audrey you know how I feel about this Audrey what do you mean any day now clay will be getting his gear and heading into battle but it's not just about your brother is it what about Bishop Hamby what about the Underground Railroad this is about the Underground Railroad this is for the cause of freedom so Emory is joining the war as well if he does daelin right I don't believe that is any of your business with Emory gone who is to take care of clays responsibilities I will take the package to Emory Thank You mr. right [Music] you [Music] [Music] hmm I would have another piece if you girls hadn't eaten at all thank you sis is there another fire hiding in the kitchen no no Jackson just the one which is all you need thank you ma'am whose delicious well thank you Samuel I'm glad you liked it come on girls come help me in the kitchen [Music] [Music] sir I cannot thank you enough you have saved my life you're welcome God has purposed me to help those in bondage reach freedom Ripley Ohio is a legendary place among slaves your story spread it through out the Senate I wonder if those stories eclipsed reality oh I am proof they do not they say there's a place just north of there High River it's the promised land they say if you want to escape slavery had through Kentucky and Baltimore star there's a light on top of a hill that won't lead you to freedom tell me about yourself Sammy I've come from plantation rouse the house slave I can read in writing both English and French my master passed away and I was left he was young son he was a cool abandon like a little bit he sold me to his friend in Kentucky and after crash the Kentucky border I broke free of my chains and escaped in the night I am excited that God has directed you here he's good yes he is my sister will pack you some food and I will explain to you your next steps in your journey to Canada and you can be on your way sir I cannot leave you cannot stay it's not safe here at all the men who were chasing you last night regularly come across the river into Iowa I have a sister that was told to another man in Kentucky as well we have promised to meet across the Ohio River and whoever made it first is to wait on the other it is our plan Samuel do you realize what you're saying Kentucky is a large state bound hunters are everywhere the borders of Ohio runs long do you have any idea where in Kentucky she is and do you have any idea how long this could take know how absurd it sounds but you yourself said God directly I have faith that he'll do the same for my sister I'll help the others while I wait well I can't very well argue with that [Music] sorry little fella I'm here to help you leave a boat and everything's gonna be fine we're free we're free get to the boat [Music] [Music] his name is Abe he's the only one yes the others must have been kind God will make a way for him he'll have a home soon Jax is at the boat we're going back across with others [Music] so clay where's Emery at home ah I see so maybe we will be in the same company huh yes cousin they're going to have to accept that if Emery wants to join no he needs to stay home boys are with company see the 14th Ohio yes yes well I'm your first sergeant sergeant Michael diaper let me show you how to wear your traps traps is what we call your equipment in this army now take your cartridge box sling put it over your head the cartridge box on your right hip that's it now take your belts make sure that you put it on with the bayonet on the left cat box on the right like this sergeant exactly like that you boys are taken to this like veterans I think you will both make right fine soldiers how can someone keep track of all this March don't worry about it son we'll make sure that you do [Music] [Music] don't be afraid my father's station master William him I will help you janna you startled me come on Ruth we must get home I will not leave until I lead them to the barn Ruth look at me focus you can't run away from me like this again I told you there is a bounty hunter in this area now you have to stay with me a bounty hunter I'm sure yes now you know the danger we must go back to dinner father will come back to help them no please don't leave us I will not go until I read them to the barn I will not eat and I've given them bread okay but we must hurry [Music] [Music] now you just stay here until my father comes you're safe now and he'll know what to do thank you so much you both need to rest someone will bring you into the house for food in the morning just close your eyes and rest everything will be fine you see freedoms lights [Music] where have you two been you want my sitter and Lizzy you have stronger clothes helping Jenny girls where have you been Ruth we have straw on your clothes we helped some mother yes but I went out and found her and she's fine she bought The Runaways to the barn and gave them food and water yes it was wonderful yes but the Bounty Hunter has made helping The Runaways even more dangerous as exciting as it may be and as much as we all believe in our cause it's simply too dangerous for you to be running around in the woods especially with the bounty hunter in the area and besides that's father's job Ruth and clearly there's too much of him in you let's see that was Esther that goes for me too [Music] what can I say to this [Music] dear Emery as I write you I sit outside my tent in camp I'm happy to be here with my cousin Reid and I'm very happy you are at home with Eliza I have established friendships with several other men as well their names are John Billings Daniel Lewis Isaac Griffith and Jacob Wolfe I suspect we shall all remain close throughout the struggle ahead we have made ourselves at home and as I settled in I think a mother and father I smiled when I remember how excited they were about the Free Soil party and how proud I think they would be that I am fighting for the cause I can still hear them arguing with Doe faces that free men on free soil make for a morally and financially better way than the way of slavery I remember when mother called them weak timid half-baked men I think being here makes a person sentimental of fond memories I think of how our family once had been as I look into the faces of these men have courage I can see Liza's face as well but sweet smile of my sister warms me as I think of myself and all these men preparing for the battles that lie before us we have set up camp near the B&O Railroad and I have found that the 14th Ohio is filled with great men at this point were so confident that we feel we could single-handedly defeat the entire Confederate Army stay safe and true to the cause your brother Clem tell you what are you doing here did you escape only to be caught again we're not the necessary taken to Kentucky where's Melanie she's in another wagons over there we're going together tonight now you must go how can I leave you too quickly that's how even if you save me may not reach now we can't let her go alone and she's calling me a child I was thinking that we India will be free your spirits taught me strong and your feet shall be quick your path I'll be favored by the Lord yes it's tough I understand we have our orders from this family now Ian I will escape into Ohio and now he telegraphed aid and charity in Westerville guys what what happened to him yes we will all be free [Music] [Music] did you understand the Telegraph it made no sense to me as I was writing it yes I understand it clearly I'd like to send a reply please yes of course Bishop Aiden Sheridan will arrive in Richmond in three days have package ready I'm going to Virginia yes I'll explain outside [Music] are you ready for your first job as a conductor yes sir what's going on this is a coded Telegraph from your friend Elizabeth van Lewin Richmond she has a passenger named Talia was to come here why Westerville OH not Philadelphia she has to meet her sister Estelle in Ohio miss van Lou believes that because your family is from Richmond you should be able to travel with the runaway and not raise too many suspicions you'll be paying her master for a week of skilled labor how will I get the passenger here miss van Lew has purchased two train tickets to Parkersburg the girl will have papers with her stating you've paid her master for the labor no questions should be asked how will I get her into Westerville and what here will believe I purchased a slave there is an underground railroad station on the Ohio River near Parkersburg they will put her in a crate and place her on a freight train the next day you'll travel from Parkersburg by stagecoach and the trip for our package should take about 15 hours to Columbus from there it'll travel by wagon and arrive here a few hours later I can do this bishop very good you have someone you can visit in Richmond yes I do and they're committed senators well that's bad for them but good for our cover [Music] thank you for having Liza and me over for dinner Audrey you're very welcome Emery I love having life oh I see partialities shown to your little best friend I believe it's pretty clear that I'm Audrey's favorite yes slices right no more pie until after dinner sometimes I think I'm the oldest person in our house well I'm old enough to get the mail and we received a letter from clay today don't get any ideas Emery with clay gone now Bishop Hamby needs you working the Underground Railroad I'm just concerned that clay is joining the Yankees this way you do the same I believe I have a say in that yes but clay influences you what influences me is President Lincoln's call for troops I realize things are getting worse and obviously I support the north and what we believe in I am just concerned about the two of you leaving Liza here alone she wouldn't be alone she has you yes Audrey you're like a sister to me and you're like a sister to me to Liza and if both of your brothers go off to war I will take care of you we can make bread every day yes I said that sounds fun well guess that settles that Emory you've already had two pieces [Music] daelin what is this a new hat do you have to return this we need food much more than I need a hat oh you need a new hat Juliana no where people will look down on us because we're poor none of our friends have ever looked down on a sailin we need food as for food I have that covered as well where did you get all of this it is my job to get all of this little sister by doing what it is your job to cook not to ask unnecessary questions you promised me that you would never feel again I did not steal anything quite the opposite actually really well I must say it is a beautiful bond it is nice is it not [Music] you know I never saw my sister we were go even though I was a house slave and she was a maid but soon she'll be crossing the Ohio River and will be reunited once again I'm looking forward to meeting Molly very much you'll get along great now young ladies you ever fooled me Lillian are you excited about staying with temperance yet again tonight by the way temperance I will be sending your mother infadoos toes [Music] always nice to watch your house and I got the girls all tucked in temple has your shoes on ah not again yes and I'm worn the median for their toes thank you so much nada Lillian loves to stay with temperance of course we'd love having her I guess I'll go next door to get those toes how did you come to calculate Lian I was in Kentucky helping Jackson and John Parker with runaways Jackson had boarded a boat to help the runaways get on and I was in the woods helping a 16 year old girl and her small sister her sister was the lion and she was three at the time slave catchers were chasing us and could hear the dogs getting closer I was carrying Lillian and running heads lead the way the dogs caught her sister's dress and pulled her to the ground shouting at me to keep running we arrived at the boat I could hear her shouting go Lillian live free slavery is torn apart so many families even my own my husband was taken about bounty hunters and an escape attempt much like yours it is an abomination that will take this country over a century to recover from if even then I'm thankful for my brother Jackson I promised that I would look after her for the rest of my days I loved her as if she were my own flesh and blood I'm excited about my letter from clay why don't you read the letter and we will have some package [Music] my dearest Liza I wanted to take a moment to write you and tell you of the exciting events that have taken place with the 14th as we march through the town of Beverly we were showered with flowers by the children I thought of you little sister and knew you would have loved to be here the flowers showered over us like a blessed rain is that not wonderful miss Audrey Suns beautiful I see what else does it say we have stopped outside of Marietta and are now being showered with pies the patriotic hands of the women have treated our regiment and the men are cheering loudly we are experiencing yet another blessing from the people of this area [Music] I must close now so I can finish my pie I think of Audrey and her pies at home could these pies compete they are certainly close your loving brother play [Music] [Music] I see wearing your new hat yes I do love it do you have plans if it's alright I'd like to go to Ruth and spend the night that's fine I have to work tonight anyway at the shipping company no I have a few other things I'm working on okay you have your gun yes for safety I hear there's a bounty hunter in the area I've heard that actually I'm leaving right now so I'll see you tomorrow all right yes I will see you tomorrow bye goodbye Julianne have fun [Music] I can't find them anywhere are you talking about Sammy I'm talking about kicking someone in the trousers now why would you do that because my pillow and blanket are missing I'm sure there's a reasonable explanation Sammy think is reasonable with a boy like me I can surely agree with that well well what Sammy my pillow and blanket Samuel you are ten years old that is plenty old enough to keep track of your own pillow and blanket I did it I hung them out the window to air out you put my pillow in my blanket and hung them out the window clearly will has put his feet on them they smelled foul if they fall on the ground I looked on the ground they weren't there whoever it's taking them oh sure here we are oh my I gathered every extra pillow and blanket in the house I would say so and it was the strangest thing mother what was I found a pillow blanket in the backyard so I brushed them off and took them to the barn for the runaways I believe those were Sammy's getting ready for your campaign I see yes it's so exciting to have all my friends here tonight you will all be having a good time it'll be fun have you or your mother seen Sammy's pillow and blanket he's threatened to put the thief in the stockades come with me wise up will prepare camp and then have apricot biscuits Oh YUM Clarissa Bell and Julianne will be here soon Emory good evening good evening Bishop thank you for allowing Liza to spend the night here of course you're welcome George stoners wagon is ready to take a group in front of waist north to the next station tonight I'm going to meet three of the cargo here in the woods later on very good I will have will and Sammy take food and water to the barn can you please call them down Sammy sisters your bedbugs you're overreacting Sam I have my suspicions I believe Lizzie has taken my pillow blanket and giving them to her friends well you did hang them outside the window open invitation for some bedbug to take them here bedbug take mine bloodsheds they smell foul boys we have a group of Runaways coming in tonight I need you to take supplies to the barn [Music] I will go see if I can find a conductor you wait here [Music] [Music] [Music] Lizzy I knew she took my pillow and blanket that's not important right now Sam put the supplies over here go get the blankets Rufe take your friends to the cellar with your mother and your sisters quickly girls stay low stay low and get all the girls to the cellar [Music] gunshots equal danger gunshots equals someone needs help - gunshots double danger someone out there needs our help are you coming with me or not I said get know how many of you are there I won't tell you how many do a thousands of dollars of it and you can never stop this yes well we'll get 150 dollars for stopping you and I'm about to get another 150 for your friend [Music] no you won't we will see about that about [Music] you move up ahead see what you could find I will turn here go for the boys in the barn okay don't be afraid I'm your conductor you're almost to your next station walk straight that way quietly 100 yards in the clearing you'll find a large barn inside there's food and water someone will meet you there soon go now quickly [Music] are you alright yes we are the sons of the stationmaster and we'll help you [Music] Hey okay that is enough daelin right memory what are you doing out here I heard shots and I thought someone may need help what are you doing out here I heard the shots as well you didn't fire them they sounded like they came from a revolver no I saw a man with a revolver run south through the woods it was a little shorter than me with light colored hair will stay safe then you viewed the same memory try not to shoot me next time [Music] I am so excited to be having the specialty party with all of you for breakfast anyone for tea yes yes yes please what do you think about last night I think if there's a bounty hunter around here we should find out who it is you think we should find out yes it is a perfect plan a bounty hunter would never expect a group of girls to be looking for him I would not expect it either I think it is a great idea we should get started right away and I have experience in this area once I caught Johnny taking an apple for Miss ma juice orchard behind her house there's a big difference between a boy taking an apple and a man in the woods with a guy very good cleric about the first clue the Bounty Hunter has a gun I think we knew that yes what men in town have a gun seriously pretty much always let's go into the woods and begin looking for clues now yes [Music] any ideas maybe we should split up and two of us go in that direction maybe you Julianne head that so I'll go through the mana we need a signal my brothers usually whistle loudly who here we're so loudly I guess I can't let's hear [Music] perhaps we should just yell for one another [Music] [Music] clarissa bel look at this I will be there shortly hurry hurry it looks like a rope and scarf I'm sure it's clue it looks rather dirty yes it does Ruth you're getting your drawers dirty how can you care about drawers at a time like this [Music] [Music] [Music] hello girls did you find any clues I think we did we found this rope and scarf where'd you find that it was beside a tree in the woods so I got down picked it up so let me guess you got your drawers dirty yes yeah absolutely did yes but I think we're much closer to finding out if a bounty hunter is and I suppose we're going to continue I know this is a good thing we'll be cautious and we'll always tell you to what we're up to and your brother's to remember that is the deal yes brothers and remember Liza's brother will home too you can have mine dear Bishop handy thank you for showing me the meaning of faithfulness I have watched your uncompromised stand to God and for what you believe your family has been faithful to Emory Liza and me I will fight for freedom and above all be faithful to the Lord who is faithful to me I want you to know that I intend on being faithful to this noble cause I promise to defend my country against treason and conspiracies and to vindicate honor to our glorious stripes and stars the last few days have been days that I'll never forget we've been marching without pause toward Phillipa Virginia the men were exhausted and they'd want for water food and rest even then the 14th are ready to fight we knew and hope that we would smell gunpowder soon Scouts were sent out regularly my cousin Reid and I were honored to be chosen for such a mission Wyatt all right the enemy could be just down over there and we don't want them know we're here doing okay clay Reid Jacob I want you to go down this road here he's along the woods see if you see the enemy down there go ahead and take off your hammer sacks and your canteens and wind up applying it around all right if you guys see anything down there send one of you back to report the other two just keep an eye on okay let's go cautious guys we scouted 10 miles that night who never saw any rebels however we did see where they had burned bridges there was only the reflection of water where they had once stood I asked that you follow me and my company with your prayers pray that I am an example of patriotism that if we should need reinforcements I may inspire others to enroll as faithful defenders of the Union we in the 14th ohio volunteers have pledged ourselves to a no more noble sacrifice than to further peace for all men no matter their color and for our governments enduring honor I must now close as my regimen has been told to remove all that is encumbering us we're making a large pile of knapsacks haversacks blankets in all our articles so we can move on in double-quick time we should arrive near Philippi at daybreak my best to you and your family yours clay you need to remember clay in our prayers [Music] you please is anyone there is this the station please I'm a passenger and I've been sent by an agent I've been chasing the night my stake hedges and have lost my conductor I've been following the North Star come sit down I'll get you some bread [Music] my name is Molly I'm Estelle [Music] but I was seeing of thy power yay I would sing aloud of thy mercy in the morning for that has been my defense and refuge in the days of my trouble you can read I liked when I was young and lived in Virginia my brother can read his name is Samuel and I am meeting him in Ohio soon he has promised to teach me out on my way to Ohio - I'm going to meet my sister Talia there perhaps we can go together there is to be a bill at the Ohio River in three nights yes yes I would love to go I'm really happy to help Jackson and the runaways but I just keep thinking my sister you have to keep your focus Samuel keep focus on your freedom and the freedom of others one at a time we will help set them free I just keep thinking back no keep your focus the promised land is obtainable now Israel was caught in slavery for hundreds of years and walked in a desert away from the promise do not let your mind get caught there you're right I I can't let my focus peaking silver my emotion and I have to keep my faith that Molly will find freedom just as I have free yourself from the philosophy of slavery see yourself is free see Molly is free with that focus Samuel the Lord will strengthen you with his faith you will be able to see with the eye of faith [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] you find any tracks yeah I think so look at this [Music] John Parker is a wanted man and we who are with him are just as valuable to $1000 who has that much money I'm sure the local slave owners have gotten together since they were take of a car the bounty hunters would know where to take any of us why pacifiers to use fear as a weapon to stop us sounds like somebody's out here besides that okay we go together towards the shot I'll distract the Bounty Hunter's and you help to run away [Music] thus far okay we're here to help you leave a boat at the river you think your cross always been distracted that we must use the book quick [Music] this will warm you would you like some bread [Music] do you need anything else oh no not right now ma'am you've done so much okay just rest for a moment happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help whose hope is in the Lord his God which made heaven and earth the sea and all that therein is which keepeth truth forever which executes the judgment for the oppressed which giveth the food to the hungry the Lord looses the prisoners I am so thankful we'll help you get to the next station of the bail don't worry the Lord bless thee and keep thee who will make his face shine upon thee and be gracious unto thee Lord lift up his countenance upon thee and give thee peace the Lord will protect you Isabel and get you to Canada my brother Emery I have just finished fighting in the Battle of Philippi I could hear your voice encouraged me after leaving behind much of our gear we marched on to Philippi in double-time there was a woman favoring the Rebbe's that spotted us and fired a pistol and this started our cannon fire as we advanced on the town those Rebs were not ready for us he was a sight of victory the Confederates were asleep from the effects of their whiskey the convincing tones of our artillery finally awakened them to their perilous situation the Rebs began running from their tents as they attempted to dress don't worry about your fancy stuff boys grab the guns ago value of the spoil was amazing it was quite a contrast as before this we had nothing to eat but hard bread and raw ham now the campus filled with activity food and laughter although we're dealing with Pickett fire nightly we're ready for more battles ahead I'm finding that my time with the 14th Ohio has changed me I know I'm a more noble man I know I will stand strong in the next battle that lies ahead your brother clay that's it what do you think it was a very interesting story yes it was I'm sure the grey backs won't always be so foolish there will be struggles ahead without a doubt and you need to go yes I do I can't sit here any longer while clay is out there this is everything that clay and I have it will be enough to help you take care of Liza for a long time and wait you don't have to I do how will you get to clay I know what chaplain who's going to meet the 14th Ohio tomorrow I'm going with him ok so we need to go over what we know well we have a rope and scarf I took the scarf to the general store mrs. younge said that it is a fabric and pattern they sell did you ask her who she'd sold it to yes and she couldn't remember exactly however there were all people she knew from town did she have her seat to the sales oh yes but she told me I shouldn't be so nosy well what about the roof not at the general store I checked at the horse stable in town there's nothing like it I checked the baker and blacksmith and did not seen anything like it you checked the blacksmith yes he seemed to think it odd I was so interested in his work well we need to find this rope in town there has to be more of a summer I heard I'm retail will that the gun that was fired in the woods was a revolver he said there aren't many people in town to own revolvers that's good to know I think we should follow the money what do you mean someone in town should have a lot more money that's true there are reports of for runaways being caught maybe we should check with the bank I don't think mr. rippen at the bank will help us we need to keep a lookout for a man with a new wagon there's something that shows he's got money are you okay Giuliana oh yes I just had an idea I will look into it later good day Anna well Hayden good day mr. Wright I suppose you're here for your parcel yeah we were hoping it came today it's much larger than your previous deliveries it's a very large order but we're excited about it so what do you do with all this new fabric I never see the Handy girls in any new dresses we like to collect it when we can I do believe we should get going yes my mother is looking forward to receiving the parcel yes of course let me give you gentlemen a hand no no that won't be necessary Hayden welcome handle it alright then if you say so thank you [Music] are you alright in there yeah can you hurry please hang on only a moment longer be cautious don't hurt her help her up I don't think I can stand hey girl Thank You Man Hayden and I will go tell mother and father that she's here oh no ma'am you don't have to do that please just call me Anna yes ma'am I mean me say Anna are you all right yes miss Anna I am it's be free I'll think the Lord to be free what's your name my name is Talia as soon as it gets dark all taking the house my mother has made you the most beautiful dress be perfect for you thank you Miss Anna please my friends just call me I wonder if anyone's help my brother yet if anyone can escape from slavery to Ohio it'd be Samuel [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] there's the boy where's the ball I doubt the boots is that here the dogs are getting closer but the boy we have to run Molly let's go this way [Music] I don't know you don't you'll never make it across that river alive it's telling you a good team shot mother oh yes one of the best I've seen for her age so she will be a lot of help yes it'll be very nice having her here I don't think having more girls around the house is a good idea [Music] sometimes it upsets me that we can't help more Runaways than we do do you remember that story about Amanda how she gave her pennies to father to save the church's telescope newspaper I do remember that story well those were pennies of faith we are helping The Runaways one person at a time it may seem as small as a penny in light of the whole picture but every penny counts so every person is like a penny in a million every person is like one penny that makes of a million well I know I am counting pennies that's my brother will in the parlor she plays the piano wonderfully and you played again so I can say sir turn away away I can't wait any longer hooray hooray I am going home 10 away away bro I can't wait any longer hooray hooray I am going home away [Music] what's playing is so beautiful what is the song called song is called all Shady it was written by my eldest son Benjamin many Union soldiers sing it and call it the song of contraband he also wrote darling Nellie gray did you like the song and my singing oh yes very much have you given any more thought to your new name yes I think I would like to be called Lodi well the name of a very kind woman in Virginia who helped keep my baby sister from being taken from me several years ago I will never forget her I love that name I'll go tell mother and Sammy Talia's new name is Lodi it's a beautiful name banda men good boys certain record after thinks we're getting wind tonight [Music] [Music] hello boys I have returned from home and everyone sends their love and prayers to you however someone insisted on coming with me Emery clay I made to Virginia thanks to chaplain Richmond you should be home with Liza Liza swell she's with Audrey but there's a bounty hunter in Westerville now hey he'll be fine he just needs to work some things through Emery welcome I'm corporal Conrad chaplain Richmond worked wonders for you to walk into camp and join the army how'd you get away with that I spoke with the colonel and all's arranged Emery will be placed in Company C along with his brother and all of you only a chaplain Emery you're gonna enjoy army life I look forward to it good to have you cousin let me introduce you to some of the men that's John Billings Jacob wolf Daniel Lewis and Isaac Griffith nice to meet you men now over there that's sergeant Michael diver but don't you call him sir cuz nothing will make a sergeant matter than being called sir okay I'll keep that in mind you men are all doing a fine job I know how rough it is on your families and that the price you pay for the lives of others is high but their freedom and the union's cause is valuable to life itself [Music] [Music] they're making so much noise they remind me of Stella and I with me were little we play like that every day both to love each other very much and they will never have to let each other go the future will be different for them bring Stella and sending her to Canada it was the greatest love you could give her I know I had just miss her dearly perhaps to be reunited with my entire family and everything we do in danger you tell me the truth I will shoot you right now okay shoot me okay okay two men from Kentucky they made me find you where are they clear down by the river but but they don't know where I am how can I know that I promised I was supposed to lead you down to the river they were gonna take you and make John Parker turn himself in to save you you realize we can't let you go back rain but but I have a wife in Kentucky writer named okay I can't write what's her name Lawrence Jameson but I will never see her again the only reason we found mr. cumberbund lives is because some kind soul had pity on you if we allow you to return then they'll beat and torture you until you tell them where we are if you found the strength to remain silent than they kill you going back is not an option if your wife passes through then we'll send her to you before the Sun rises Alice he heats the station that read Oh again don't go on your way to Canada I understand sir [Music] do you think were going the wrong way to the river I think so tonight we should move back towards for the Bonnie hundred o'clock the girl we should pray for a clear sky in full moon so we can see well yes I was taught to trust in the Lord and that is what we're gonna do my mama told me a story about a runaway named Eliza Eliza came this way in the cold of winter with the baby she got to the edge of the river and hurt the dogs barking behind her she saw the light at the top of Liberty Hill there was no boat so she stepped across the ice jumping from patch to patch all the way across the river to freedom that is an amazing story Molly she made it across the river Estelle and so are we yes we're gonna get across that river mommy but now we have to sleep we have to be wanting in that dark go ahead I will take first watch I am too excited to sleep very well [Music] it's raining but it's still sunny how does that happen well when the rain clouds aren't big enough to cover the Sun kind of like hard times huh they aren't big enough to cover hope yes why is it just like that we received our first letter from Emery shall we read it yes our dear sister Liza and our dear friend Audrey I am here with clay now we are both doing well and are healthy earlier today I experienced my first action it was a skirmish in a field against some rats [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] reload like this is this one it's like oh boy I thought we'd be fighting standing up this is skirmishing drop front keep an eye on what the rebels are getting that now Randall's cavalry up here you see them [Music] shortly after the skirmish the rains begin and have not stopped sense the close companion to the rain is the mud in some places ankle-deep our army issued will clothing become so heavy with water it nearly drags us to the ground we can hear cannons in the distance it is a small comfort to be safe in our tents but I cannot help but feel for our comrades who have pressed on into the battle average mountain is it raining while the Sun shines there - miss Audrey I don't think so Eliza [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] as I write it brings to my attention how much we miss you liza yet we both know this is where we are meant to be continued with Audrey to be brave as we stand together in the saviours love a love that demands that all men are created equal and deserve we can do nothing more for this cause my dear Liza then stand courageously through the fight for the rights of others I know you and Miss Audrey are doing the same as we are awaiting be brave little sister I love to you both your brothers and Rita cool my brave miss Audrey [Music] good afternoon mr. Wright I understand you have a package for me good afternoon bishop yes they do and here it is it appears to be from Virginia very good I have been expecting this I must say it's much smaller than your last package from Virginia yes indeed it is and the packing slip on your last package said that the crate was full of fabric I must have been a large amount of fabric the handy household has five women we use a lot of fabric and a very heavy fabric yes contents of the crate were packed rather tightly good day mr. Wright sir yes mr. Wright I'm concerned daelin I have helped you and Giuliana from the moment you moved to this town it has never been any concern of yours what my family receives here at the shipping company well I am fully aware that there's a matter here which should concern me and I intend on uncovering it uncovering it your prying is beginning to concern me mr. right you're not fooling anyone sir the wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way but that which is in the midst of fools will be made known what is hidden will be made known Bishop I am certain of that de lijn right truly certain [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] I can't begin to thank you enough for letting me stay and work here oh my it's a blessing to have you thank you mrs. Hanvey we've gotten so much done since you've been helping The Runaways really appreciate the new clothes we're selling them sewing has always been a joy for me but now that I'm free to choose to help others with it I love it even more hello father hello Anna I'm taking these things that's the barn for tonight's guests would you like to come with me Lottie oh yes I would love to help very well we'll return shortly all right Anna how many Runaways are we expecting tonight we're expecting only two but we always prepare for more sometimes Runaways meet in the woods and stay together I'm excited to meet them me too oh here I can Bonni Bonni are you out there father what is it Emma and I we're zloty she's been taken in the kitchen yes sequel's actually think you're close to finding out who this bounty hunter is guests were close we have a lot of clues we just seemed to have a problem connecting them all that's why we were wondering if you could help us yes you don't know anyone smarter than you I appreciate your high regards of my intelligence girls but I'm not sure I can connect the clues any better than you already have what's wrong Julianne daelin what happened to de lijn or ten what are you talking about doing is the bounty hunter how do you know because all of this was in his room should have known it all makes sense now the new hat the nice food the new clothes he promised me he wasn't feeling but I never thought of this it's not your fault Julianne right under my nose the whole time and no Julianne you cannot think that way and your brother made his own decisions you never could have stopped him wait a minute a $500 reward for Talia Edmondson this is Lottie she's at my house right now to stay even know that if he does were in trouble Julianne and I will go warn my father we will take the shortcut through the woods [Music] make way let me pass please let the girl go you're in no position to stop me I'm within the law [Music] daelin what are you doing come no closer bishop let me pass there's no reward in it if you shoot her merely obeying the law is you who is breaking it to me yes de lijn I am breaking the law a law that is a stain on the soul of this nation but look at yourself you hold within your hands the life of another is that within your rights batter my way Bishop turning this fugitive into the authorities I will not let you take her Juliana what are you what are you doing here how could you hear my brother you know he needs it the money not that kind of money had to eat I would be dirt and plate the food of bondage how can you say that Jordan pond is sure wants to himself your own pride fault father said to me everything we own yes and he left us left us with nothing and you're just it's greedy join more bondage than any flav how can you say that because the bond is your and runs deep to the soul I will pray for you dealing but if you continue this and will never speak to again Juliana Juliana Juliana daelin it is time for you to stop reproaching the person of freedom freedom is no person on the contrary the person of freedom is the light that will set you free from the bondage of yourself and the bondage of greed Bishop I don't understand there was a man who took men women and children into bondage and led them to slaughter oh he acted within the law but it was on the road to Damascus that he fell and saw the light the light of freedom that was the turning point in Paul's life this is that moment for you Damon open your eyes see the light walk into that light [Music] forgive me [Music] it's the river we need to get across the other side look I feel lighter breathe oh yes but no hope for Eliza she made it stop that is enough I'm gonna go back to your masa for your beat jump in that river and I will lay down your gun slowly [Music] now me [Music] [Music] come with me and I'll take it to the other side thank you are you doing with the boat yes I am [Music] just the top two steps another yes Samuel thank you I can't get that Jackson to do anything except eat and save runaway slaves [Music] I've just put two Runaways in the cabin I told them you'd be out with supplies well go now [Music] [Music] what are you doing I'm fixing the stuff looks lovely now well yes Neda said she asked you several times she never asked me take a break and come here for a minute I just have one step left can it wait no I ran into a bounty hunter tonight I want to tell you about it the stairs can wait this way he's old never what thank you you're very welcome eat as much as he'd like would someone be able to send a telegram for me I'm too someone to someone named Aidan Sheridan in Westerville I'm going through my sister Talia there mm lovely I'm sure Jackson could someone for you tomorrow thank you and I must find my brother right away what does your brother's name his name is Samuel Samuel Woodson are you Molly yes I am I'll be right back Samuel can you bring some more firewood out to the cabin I just have one more step can't it wait no Samuel just take some firewood to the cabin the stairs can wait Samuel Samuel I made it yes he is [Music] what brings you to my home today I've come to tell you that I've not informed anyone of the Underground Railroad which you run from your home sir all we do from our home daelin is as the Lord leads and love commands I want to thank you sir thank me in all honesty it's because of juliana that you're even here right now it is because of juliana and you sir that I've changed I know that I am a new man how are we to know the same because of a man named Paul in the book of Acts please let me read then Ananias answered lord I have heard by many of this man of the evil that he has done he has the authority from the chief priests to bind all and the Lord said unto him go thy way for he is a chosen vessel unto me I am that man yes you have taken a risk for the lives of others you know my reputation you know what hurt I have brought yet you sit here because of the lives of so many because that is the kind of man that you are daelin as someone who paid for his own freedom from a wicked man I know the meaning of captivity I walk many a mile for my freedom only to walk back again and spend time in jail until I paid for it then you understand how God can get a hold of a man for a greater purpose I also understand that things that appear to be a risk aren't a risk at all when seeing through the eyes of faith what is my prayer that you will trust me once again sir and if not I will do whatever you ask to again earned that trust I want to join the Underground Railroad just as the slave trader John Newton came to realize his need I had also well Jesus father no Anna Lodi wait it's safe all right father what is happening here daelin was just sharing that he is a changed man I would like to sincerely apologize to money and miss sandy I'd like to join you on the ground [Music] it's already what is it I've just received a telegraph from Ripley Ohio it states Elizabeth banlieue has a package ready for me to pick up from somebody named Jackson complet it has to be my sister's great the plan is working you will leave right away to pick up the package sir with Ripley a hundred twenty miles away I'm concerned about traveling so far with them I don't know the area or the bounty hunters Bishop handy I've traveled the road from here - Ripley taking fugitive slaves back to their masters from Kentucky I know a local bounty hunters I could be your cover if you'd allow me to go with Aidan [Music] body what do you think I think you should go no one would expect a bounty hunter to be helping a fugitive please sir this is something I have to do Aiden if he can be trusted sir it would be very beneficial I believe you were to do this de lijn you told me that you are like Paul well this is your chance to perfect can I trust you Damon right yes bishop you can trust me I will not disappoint you [Music] well Jackson received the telegram a bit again how can you be so calm about this what did it say it just mentioned that a couple of folks named Aiden and Dale and will be coming to pick up a special package to be delivered to some place called Westerville it's happening I'm so excited yes I know do you mind if I go tell Neda no no go Estelle has become like a sister to me and I'm sad to see her leave speaking of leaving Molly I want to talk to you about that I haven't grown a lot since I've been here helping Jackson then and I want to stay here and help others and she from the way that I have well did you think I was gonna go to Canada I thought the plan wasn't it that was our plan but I see that it wasn't God's plan Jax has already told me his room from both in this year that settles it Ben Molly I know that once the war's over you will have the freedom to go see Castel whenever he like that will be wonderful what are you two doing we heard your grumbling clear down the path Sammy has it in his head that he could climb the rope to the loft that's it putting up with sisters who laugh at me is no longer acceptable I'm going to get the ladder Oh Anna you're working Sammy Anna you'll have to get a ladder down on your own Sam tell you but still so you mayor yes pal yeah I'm here now where is Nellie she's not here I couldn't bring her they made her house late our masters baby there is no way I could get her life but she's safe them Bishop Hamby will help us get her back come Sammy well get yourself fired for the vase and tell father mother that she's here this is Anna she's my best friend he was so nice to finally meet you Lottie has told me so much about you that's my new name do you like it yes it's perfect hey Amory Lorch come on out boys you're telling stories about surgeon tranquilizer all right I'll be on a minute just let me finish this letter to Bishop NV okay dear bishop Hamby clay and I have returned to camp are now rested from the most intense battle I have fought since my recruitment it was the Battle of corks forward it all began in the early morning of July 2 13th we had marched about eight miles the night before and had set up camp in the woods we had no tents and had not eaten Konrad get these men up get a movement get them fed come on let's go the body up come on got a move out let's go time to go up everybody get up we gotta go come on boys right now let's get moving your body up come on we gotta move out a three o'clock in the morning we were awakened and given just a moment to quickly eat our hardtack here thanks what's going on I have no idea has something like this happen before not since I've been here it's gonna be alright though I'm ready very quick it'll be fine better hurry boys we're gonna fall in any moment now alright nobody see Oh [Music] tension company shoulder arm left face [Music] forward march men who moments before were asleep and hungry now begin marching like soldiers with determination in their faces ready to face whatever was ahead we marched as such a rapid pace that my one o'clock that afternoon we caught up with the great backs rear guard they were cavalry and after a short exchange of gunfire they scattered and quicker than my chickens back home by two o'clock we had reached the cheat River after fording the river where we received the word for skirmishers of a line of Rebs waiting to ambush us [Music] we've all leads three rounds in their direction [Music] the Rebbe take off running for their lives after pursuing them for a mile and fording the river again we found them formed in a line of bow company buddy [Music] [Music] we were met with musket fire we returned fire and called on our six pound cannon to answer the gray backs fled again double quick time led by their cavalry what happened next was unexpected without warning we were fired upon by the Rev whoa by the grace of God the Rebs had aimed high and the volley missed us we were lent lessly fought the Rebs and for 37 minutes we were given the command to advance in the confession retreat [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] all that remains with ten rads is an officer five rebels in the officer with his five other Grayback surrender the victory was joyous but it did not come without great loss for both sides as we approach the Confederate line there was no celebrating only the stark realization of the great price that must be paid for this great country look here boys an officer it's not just an officer it's a general that boys is General Robert Garnett I knew him at West Point we're cadets together he's a fine soldier it's a shame to see him gone where Sarge has been hit sergeant Michael Deaver are you sure yes he was hit by artillery fire on the other side of the river can they save him there was nothing to be done Emory he's gone the men that have fought beside me are strong and mortal I could not have asked for better brothers in his noble fight God is carrying us through and like them I will be realistic in the army and will not be coming home after my 90 days of service are over I know this comes as no surprise to may we continue together in the cause as we move forward for the lives of those in bondage c'mere men's desires god bless you all [Music] you [Music] [Music] would you like to hear this letter from client yes I would love to father dear Bishop Hanby after celebrating the surrender of general Johnston's troops the 14th OVI have marched from Richmond Virginia to Washington news of the war being over has brought to me mixed emotions there's been victory and much loss the mixed emotions are made stronger while here in our nation's capital after President Lincoln's death hammering have you seen my haversack no read the war is over and now you lose your avarice AG it's probably in here I have heard that the 14th will be moving to Louisville Kentucky in the next few months we believe we will be sent home shortly after arriving to Louisville I look forward to being home again sharing a tent for four years with Emery has been an experience found it good bye thanks your help lives given by those who have fought in battle will be seeds that produce a great harvest of freedom what the future holds for us at home is to continue to help all men of all colors to experience the promise of life hope and a future together just as God has intended [Music] we return to a new day we have won the fight for the freedom of those who are enslaved and the Underground Railroad no longer needs to exist [Music] we shall not only see our nation as one again but we shall see those who have lived by the fruit of hope live free to pursue happiness as men we have written a letter telling Liza and Audrey we are on our way please be sure they have received it we look forward to supporting you in the next fight whatever it may be we will be back in Westerville soon Emery and clay it will be a joyous homecoming there will be so many new people for them to meet [Music] what has captivated your attention the war's over father it's really over I am amazed I'm sitting here watching Estelle and loud his little sister Nellie freely playing with other children there's no fear or concern it's only love seeing Nellie free and with a future at only 8 years old blesses me the Underground Railroad has served a great purpose the Lord will continue to bring freedom to all as long as we stand it's no need for flowers in the base stell mati [Music] Nellie they're free now our family has helped so many God is pleased and we've never compromised and I know you you'll always have to fight for something well the temperance movement is beginning I think I'll go join them very well have a good time Anna [Music] [Applause] [Music] you [Music] you [Music] [Applause] [Music] you [Music]
