well I just finished up something that was maxed my lathe out so it's time for something a little smaller got a piece of cherry it's 5 and 3/4 Square 4 in thick it seems to be nice and dry uh viewer Rick gave me a bunch of wood a few months ago and this had already been dried it came from a larger piece that I cut down to this size so I'm going to do an unusual turning I very interested in it I saw it in a magazine article I believe and I don't remember who did it but if I remember I'll let you know at the end but there's going to be a a couple cuts on the band saw and a little bit of glue up so I'm going to go over to the band saw now and we'll make those cuts I'm getting kind of anxious to do this I thought about making a special Circle cutting jig for this but I figured for what I'm doing a freehand cut should work okay I did find that that cherry was a a lot harder than I expected though I drilled a couple holes in here before I made that cut because I want it to line back up I'm going to glue it back together right now I'll be using this veneer in here for a spacer and it's going to create a line that comes around the bowl showing you the gluing process here but I'll do it at a little faster speed it looks the same either way so fast or slow let's get on with the show if you're wondering I'm using typ Bond 3 there and I'm just trying to use it all up because I really don't like this [Applause] stuff I let the glue dry all night I rotated the piece and I am now cutting that same arc on there and you'll see what it looks like here in a second well as you can see I did locate my little glue spreader in the tray and it's right where I put it where it would be safe so I'm going to get this glued together let it sit and tomorrow we'll go ahead and turn it and hope that this pattern actually works out at the moment it looks a little bit strange I do prefer this glue roller over the other one I used it's a lot softer and it just rolls it on a lot smoother the only problem is I need to remember the safe places I put things so I won't lose them I'll let this sit on night but it'll just be a few seconds for you so see you then well I let this pie it for 2 days to make sure the glue was dry I've band sawed the corners off just to make it a little easier to get it round and during the two days that I sat I put the final finish on the largest diameter I've done on this lathe it maxed it out and uh I've already posted that video and if you haven't seen it I'll make sure I get a link in there for it so I'm going to start with a 58 bow gouge we're just going to make it round I'll leave the tail stock support on there until it's round I might be putting my little space heater on because it's getting cold but fortunately it's not very noisy about 800 RPM so I know all that glue up probably is not real exciting but we're on to the fun stuff right now if you're liking what you're seeing right here and you're not subscribed please think about doing that and just reach down there and click that subscribe button all right there's a little better look wow I think my buddy Kelly will love this it's just full of chatoyance so I've pulled a tail stock out of the way I really didn't need it but I'm going to go ahead and flatten this off then I'll mark for a Tenon on here and then I'll have another look at the shape and see if I want to change it I'm switch to a/2 in b full [Applause] [Music] G I did find that this Cherry was really harder than I expected so I put the Life Center back up for support I resharpened my halfin full gouge and I'm doing about 1100 RPM here all right I think I like that and it's came out very smooth what a pretty piece of wood wow okay let's get that bottom finished up and we will get it turned around so this is fairly smooth I've got the lathe running in Reverse it's 375 RPM just going to go over this with 150 and then I'll flip it I'm kind of looking at this as maybe changing a little bit based on what the top look looks like we'll just do a little sanding here and I'll be back and we'll have it flipped around so as I'm editing this I looked at the bottom and it looked like I rounded it over I searched through my files I did have a clip that was in between there but it didn't seem to have it on there I don't know if it stopped recording or what happened but you can see I did round it over a little bit for a better shape sorry about that I've got it flipped around it's running real true about 750 RPM want to flatten this face and then we'll move the tail stock out of the way and start hollowing it out half in Bow Down going of stop to have a look at where this is positioned in relationship to the top I I think I need to maybe take up to a/4 inch off of here just to kind of get it in the right place take a little off and then have a look at it all right I didn't take much off but I think it looks better I've got a little angle go back through here going use this small carbide hallowing tool and just get that started just might put the light back on [Music] all right we can go back to the gouch now and have this set up here to use as a depth gauge it's a panel marking gauge works good for this so I've still got about an inch and a quarter to go so we're just going to get that hogged out probably not going to see a lot because I got my hands in the way but I'll do the best I [Applause] can just about there up 38 of an inch got to get in here and see where we're at on the bottom and probably could get another half inch off of that I pretty much have everything down to about 38 of an inch except right here in the center let see if I can cut this off here and get it closed and then uh if I can't get it I'll use that little [Applause] [Applause] carbide I think I got it not bad I'm going to set up and uh use the naked rake Scraper on these walls right here I'm going to set it up to go in reverse I'll be right back oops I just bumped you kind of awkward right here okay that's pretty decent I think we can probably get this sanded up now okay I'll get this sanded up to 400 and then we'll come back and I'll show you the finish going on the outside inside's all sanded up ready for finish outside is as well it's sanded a 400 I went over it with this scotchbrite pad here it almost looks like it doesn't even need a finish on it and just look at that thing when you rotate it it's like someone turns a light switch on very cool so I'm going to use the wood bowl finish again because I I used it last week and I really liked it a lot and I've had it for a while and eventually it goes bad the more you open the can this probably only going to take maybe two or three coats at the most I'll let it dry really good I'll buff it out again with that scotchbrite and do the same thing on the inside I get that all done we'll come back and remove the [Applause] Tenon [Applause] well here it is it's all done I'm going to call this the intersecting Circle Bowl that's because I've got two circles intersecting on here so I think it looks pretty cool never done it before I was looking forward to trying it and I'm sure glad I did in order to do these Cuts I left the block Square made my first cut glued the pieces in rotated at 90° made the other cut glued them together and then we turned it and this is what we got it's got some amazing rain in here just look at that right there just it just works with the light so well it's just full of chatoyance shout out to the baseman on that it's pretty easy to do I would like to do something more complexed and I probably will and it wouldn't be cutting circles so if you'd like to see more of similar things like this let me know I'd be happy to do them like I said it's pretty easy to do I sure had a lot of fun making it and I sure hope you enjoyed the video I really do hope you enjoyed this if you did leave a comment let me know I love reading the comments don't forget to like share and subscribe all that good stuff but what I forgot is to thank Rick for this beautiful piece of wood so till the next time see you later
