about eight months ago while researching for my life of talk video i stumbled upon this little story or episode that was not part of book one and i've been wanting to make a video about this little story for quite some time because i honestly think it's some incredible storytelling and adds so much to the overall avatar timeline this story is canon and has been approved by the original creators it's not fan made it's not made up by me this is an actual part of the avatar storyline but not a lot of people know about it so i wanted to bring it into the light so that more people would see this story not only to be entertained but hopefully to enhance your overall look at the series and characters we not only get a more fleshed out character arc for admiral zhao which shows his true flaws but we get a really deep and in-depth look at aang's struggles with being the last airbender literally bringing the title of the show into a whole new light that we can study pretty deeply and on top of that it adds some really interesting history to the start of the 100 year war in this video i'm going to go through this story or episode and break it down as we go explaining why this episode would have been so fantastic before we start i'm trying to grow my footprint on other social medias besides just youtube so it would be awesome if you guys could follow me on twitter and instagram i tweet about your favorite fandoms like harry potter avatar star wars marvel hunger games and so much more and you can see behind the scenes movie flame stuff on instagram and just some of my personal life like my dog loki who is the cutest dog in the world and just some fun posts on both platforms all of my social media platforms as well as my patreon are linked below for easy access if you want give me a follow if not that's totally fine so now let's get the video started the story starts from the point of view of team avatar about a week before they arrive in the northern water tribe they were shopping at a merchant center and while there yang found an old airbending relic called an airbender pendant which in itself is very interesting because this is very similar to what he has in the finale of the series and in the comics after the series we found out that that necklace ties him to his past lives because when he destroyed it he lost his connection with roku which he had planned to do and was the whole point of destroying it but he later finds out that he also cut off his connection with yang chen and the rest of his past lives this shows how important and useful these relics can be which is a constant theme in the story how something so small can make such an impact and this foreshadows what's to come for the rest of the episode but anyway ann gets super excited when he sees this relic and he asks the merchant where he got it the merchant tells him that a man traded it for medical herbs two days ago aang of course gets really excited because he thinks this might be another airbender that survived and that maybe he wasn't the last airbender after all when aang asked where the man came from the merchant told him that he came from the mountains above but that he was probably a traveler who got lost as no one from the nearby village would go up there because the mountains were sacred and it was said to be full of flying spirits this had airbender written all over it and ang got even more anxious to go up there and see this man that night aang snuck off while saku and katara were sleeping and he actually feels quite guilty even apologizing to katara from afar as he left which is a perfect reference to him leaving the air nation before getting frozen in ice it shows the profound consequences and guilt that that moment still has on aang which is really fascinating and it shows how the writers of this story truly understand eng's character as aang was flying over the mountains with his glider he thought to himself that he should have told katara where he was going but then realized that she would have said no because she was so focused on reaching the north pole recently now that they were getting so close and that was of course their whole mission and journey in book one to reach the north pole so that eng and also katara could master water bending there's a line in the story where saka calls katara out saying that they're going to the north so that ang can learn water bending that's the whole point she's just getting an added bonus by being able to train with him and katara's obsession with reaching the north shows much more depth in guitarist character as well it's sort of skimmed over in book one how badly katara wants to become a waterbender and i think that's where her drive comes from that's why she's able to stay on her feet for so long while fighting paku a real water bending master when he refuses to teach her she is determined to become a water bending master and it's her mission in life like most things in katara's life this probably stems from the loss of her mother because her mother gave herself up as the last waterbender in the tribe to protect katara and katara wanted to make that count to become the best waterbender she can seizing the opportunity that her mother gave her and making sure that her death was not in vain as eng was flying over the mountains he thought to himself that had he told saka and katara where he was going they would have told him that all of the airbenders were gone but aang did not give up hope he sort of needed this to be true because it was his last hope of finding someone like him and if there was one place any airbender would be they would be here in the sacred mountains aang eventually finds a stupa an old airbending statue which makes him think that at some point there really was an airbender here aang then becomes super excited when he sees man-made caves with lights on down below the statue he runs for it without thinking and without reason too excited to do anything but meet this other airbender when he first gets down there it looks really promising as it's a room full of air nation relics and in the back corner a man who is wearing a hood the naive aang goes up to the hooded man hoping it's another airbender but as we know from the title of the show aang is the last airbender and when the man turns around aang sees that it's the merchant who gave him the information to get here it was a trap aang is immediately caught up in a rope and is confronted by zhao zhao tells the guards to make sure he's bound tightly because obviously the last time zhao had hang in his clutches and escaped xiao gives a brilliant dialogue about hunting and how you have to hunt where your prey lives and god do i wish that jason isaacs the voice actor for zhao could have voiced this line that would have been incredible the merchant then speaks up and says to zhao that he's done his part and that now is she got to keep all of the airbending relics as promised and zhao says that he can take as much as he can carry of this junk something that is classic zhao not knowing the worth of things that don't cause immediate destruction he's as far from an air nomad as can be which is one reason why eng was able to beat him in the episode called the deserter where zhao single-handedly destroys his ships while trying to go after aang because he has no restraint zhao then breaks the airbender pendant and he gives aang a history lesson about firelord zozin saying that sozin used these caves to draw in the few airbenders who escaped his assault while destroying all of the air nation locations the surviving airbenders would think that other air nation refugees were laying low here and aang had fallen into the very trap that many of his people had 100 years ago zhao then got into aang's face and said that this trap was able to catch one last airbender in typical zhao fashion he thought that he had won and he talked down to aang like he was an idiot for not knowing fire nation military history which he said proved to be eng's downfall but zhao always seems to miss one thing that proves to be his downfall whether it be losing by crippling himself or the consequences of messing with spirits and here the consequences of thinking he knows everything which ang proves he clearly does not as he explains air nomad history which he states he's sure xiao knows nothing about when ang airbends zhao's own firebending is what frees the ropes on angk's legs once again crippling himself by underestimating aang and overestimating the power of his firebending engman uses the junk as zhaowad called it to help him escape he plays an old air nation horn sending everyone flying back then he uses another air nation relic which was used in rituals but aang explains that himself and his friends found out that if you spun it too hard inside a room it causes all sorts of chaos which was just enough for eng to escape with his glider zhao on the ground surrounded by air nation relics is the perfect representation of the character theme his ark is so focused on always losing because of how naive he is about certain areas he sees as weak or insignificant the story ends with aang looking out over the mountains when saka and katara join him qatar mentions how air nomads would have been attracted to this place and she infers that that's why he's upset because this place reminds him of his home guitar's line is so powerful especially when paired with aang's response saying that a few air nomads were attracted to this place and aang knows that that was their downfall lured in and then killed by the fire nation this ending is almost exactly like the third episode ending in book 1 as we have sakan katara with aang then a close-up shot of an upset ang being held by katara and then the final shot is a wide shot with all three of them the only difference is in episode 3 they were telling aang that they were all in this together and that they were there for him but this time in this story aang is alone and what i mean by that is though he has saka and katara with him they do not know what he knows he alone has the information that is eating him up inside it's a dark ending to the story and i really wish that they would have made this into an episode because i think it would have made for an incredible addition to book one and the
