what are you doing i was supposed to be watching krusty faces cat but i can't seem to find him anywhere well what did it look like it was furry gray and right on top of your head andy please don't tell me that's the cat i'm looking for oh this old thing it's not a cat steve made it for me and what did steve make it out of how would i know yo steve please tell me you didn't make this hat out of krusty face's cat first of all that rhymes second of all of course not i would never what do you think i am some kind of monster [Music] hey google where can i get a cat what well that hat kind of reminds me of a frontiersman you look like you could hang out with lewis and clark wait a second are they those two plumbers with mustaches that wear red and green that's mario and luigi are they the yellow sponge and pink starfish looking fellas that live in the ocean that's spongebob and patrick are they the blue puppet and human that go into space and make mediocre videos on the internet that's us oh never mind i haven't heard of them well i guess we need to learn the history of lewis and clark meet meriwether lewis and william clark the explorers who with their team of dozens of men set out to explore the western united states wait a second why is his first name switched with his last name what do you mean okay hear me out merryweather lewis it sounds like it should be louis merriweather and don't even get me started on william clark what's wrong with him he has two first names william and clark that's like naming me andy andy or andy michael or andy dennis okay enough i think we get it the expedition started with the third president of the united states thomas jefferson show some respect the man's name is tommy jeff's anyway when tommy jeffs became the president the united states was pretty small his plan was to expand so he started with the port of new orleans a super important trading post that was owned by the french after some back and forth france agreed to sell the entire city of new orleans and the port to the united states for about 10 million dollars monsieur tommy jeffs may i have this little kitty rubber duck imma say no what do you say count dracula for the last time my name is peter the french then agreed to throw in the rest of the territory they own for another 5 million dollars monsieur dracula i will give you all of this extra land for 5 million and that little cutesy rubber what why does everyone keep calling me dracula this event became known as the louisiana purchase and if you were to adjust the price of it today it would equal about 8.5 billion dollars so how much extra land are we talking here a nice playground a hot tub a small gazebo nope the united states got an extra 828 000 square miles what that's over five times bigger than california hey uh any chance they got a cat in that purchase i'm asking for a friend no the united states got all this land for about three cents an acre that would be like buying all of disney world for the price of a ps5 in four games whoa this massive purchase doubled the size of the country in a snap but there was one problem tommy jeffs didn't really know what was out there he had hoped to find a waterway that could go from the mississippi river to the pacific ocean which would make trading stuff easy hey anybody want to swap out for a holographic jigglypuff but besides a waterway there are some reports of tommy jeff's thinking there would be giant salt mountains and woolly mammoth to discover so he persuaded congress to pay for an expedition to explore this land hey guys i kind of need some more money to see what's on all that new land i bought but why so we can see what's out there duh so you spent 15 million dollars on something you've never seen before and now you want more money yes he called this mission the voyage of discovery and immediately began putting a team of explorers together first the president chose captain meriwether lewis not only was he tommy jeff's personal secretary but he was also an officer in the army and spoke a few native american languages next lewis recommended his best friend william clark who also served in the military to lead alongside him hey clark yep can i ask you something yep would you want to come along with me on a deadly adventure for like two years yep are you sure cause there's going to be like bears and wolves and yep yep and let me guess yep yep it took them about six months to prepare for their journey as they gathered supplies and recruited their team but it was kind of hard to know what to bring since no one had ever explored this area before okay i think we're all set it just depends on what the crew brave sergeant floyd is that a toilet filled with spaghetti it's pronounced pasghetti command lewis even famously brought his newfoundland dog who he called sea man to come along for the ride the crew called themselves the core of discovery and on may 14th 1804 they left saint louis missouri headed west for the adventure of a lifetime what's the big deal they got on a boat and sailed down a river i do that every summer with my cousin fernando well think of it like this it was uncharted territory no one had ever been out there before this would be like us going to a new planet so what we go to a new planet in every space video okay then it would be like justin going to a new planet i'm from a random moon that no one has been to yeah okay then it would be like raspberry lime going to a new planet i went to the last one with you what okay fine but they didn't have rocket ships or cell phones or talking robots or talking robots whatever just ignore my comparison three months into the voyage near what is now sioux city iowa the crew lost their first member sergeant charles floyd i knew i shouldn't hate that pisghetti what and he was the only member who died on this journey aw man what did it mean a bear attack arrow to the knee a pack of wolves no his appendix burst really yeah wow that stinks imagine being a part of one of the most important events in american history and your appendix burst that's like being absent from school when there's a food fight so what else happened on this trip in november with winterfest approaching the crew set up a camp called fort mandan in what is now near washburn north dakota while there they met many native american tribes that they traded with but perhaps the most famous of those they met was a french canadian man named toussaint charbonneau and his wife saka jawia oh i've heard of her before her name actually means bird woman wow you're actually right hey what does my name mean it says here that your name means annoying youtuber that looks like a crunchy cheese doodle what what that's what it says that's a gift card to chili's it is huh i wonder how they knew you look like a crunchy cheese doodle i'm sorry carry on lewis and clark hired charbonneau as a translator for their expedition but when they discovered his wife spoke other native american languages they asked her to come along too what are you guys looking at at only 17 years old and pregnant with her first child sakajuwia didn't seem like a big deal at the time but she proved to be one of the most important members of the core of discovery not only did she translate she also helped men forage for plants okay so i found a carrot and trix yogurt even though that hasn't been invented yet what and served as a symbol of peace to the other tribes the core came across on their journey she gave birth to her son john baptiste charbonneau who clark called pomp or pompey in february and two months later in april with her newborn baby in tow the crew traveled further down the river to continue their adventure man this sacagawea lady is incredible she did this whole trip carrying a baby kind of reminds me of me how does sacajawea remind you of you she carried the baby and i've been carrying this video with comedic relief hey speaking of carrion are either of you carrying a living cat i'm asking for a friend no no cat's here but the core of discovery we're about to carry something what's that their canoes eventually the core face the great falls a giant group of waterfalls in montana to avoid a giant waterfall the crew had to carry their boats and equipment for 18 miles over rocky terrain all while avoiding rattlesnakes cactuses and grizzly bears and it took them over a month to do it this part of the trip was called the great falls portage but soon after that they were back on their way [Music] with the help of sacagawea lewis and clark had found the shoshone native americans they were hoping to buy horses from them so they could cross the rocky mountains before winter to her surprise sacagawea was reunited with her brother who is now the leader of the shoshone tribe the crew was then joined by a guide named old toby who helped them find their way the core carried on but in september they became lost it quickly begins to snow and members of the crew begin to starve after nearly two weeks they stumbled out of the forest freezing and starving but were greeted by a village of nez perce native americans who fed the explorers and helped them build canoes finally in november of 1805 after traveling over 4 000 miles over a year after they first started the core reached the pacific ocean with winter fast approaching the corps voted on where to build their home for the next few months this vote is considered historic since it included the opinions of york an enslaved african-american man and sacagawea a native american woman 60 years before the end of slavery and more than a century before either women or native americans were granted full citizenship wow they settled on fort clatsop in what is now astoria oregon parents and teachers if you wish to learn more about york with your children and how the topic of slavery was associated with lewis and clark visit the article linked in the description box the end not even close after traveling all the way there it was time to head home so what they look down follow their footsteps and boom they are back in st louis it wasn't that easy in march of 1806 they started their journey home and it took them another seven months to make their return on the way clark etched his name and the date into a stone near modern day billings montana yep he called it pompey's pillar you know what these three letters backwards spell yep what after sacajawea's son when sacajawea left the expedition in august of 1806 clark offered to adopt him and raise him as his own child sakajawia initially said no but she later agreed so that clark could give pompey a proper education a few weeks later the core of discovery arrived back in st louis where the exhausted explorers were greeted as heroes the corps was able to provide over 100 detailed maps of the area's mountains and rivers the locations of the native people that live there and they documented nearly 200 new species of plants and over 100 new animals including coyotes prairie dogs and grizzly bears this nearly 8 000 mile journey took them over two years to complete and their entire experience plus the challenges they faced were all detailed in their journals which you can still buy today man although this expedition sounds cool i would never ever want to travel 8 000 miles just to draw some maps and write that i saw a few bears huh i wonder who that is hey neighbors it's me christopher i'm here to pick up my cutesy little cow what do you say we jump out the window and go travel 8 000 miles to draw maps and see some bears hey guys thanks for watching as always this video could not be made without the help from my patrons on patreon especially israel and london aaron evan gray nadia
