all the gods are the heavens all the hell's are within you a quote by Joseph Campbell so if we're everything how do we become here we're destined to be how do we navigate this labyrinth of life and how do we move from the ordinary to the extraordinary and how do we dance in both worlds how do we become the heroes of our own stories I'm Anastasia from emotional sovereignty calm and today I'm going to be taking you on a journey through the stages of the hero's journey home throughout history myths and stories about heroes have been passed down from generation to generation we write about them in tales we think about them in songs we remake them in some movies and we worship them in religion but why is the enabler of the hero and why do we ruin so deeply for them okay now I'm supposed to say mm-hmm that's interesting but then you say but what but you already know what I'm going to tell you another one so did you find yourself rooting for Nia when he was with the Oracle and are these stories a myths which are woven into the fabric of our society more than just stories can myths and legends hold a psychological and spiritual blueprint a roadmap for our journey throughout life could a myth be more than a fairy tale and a legend could it actually be a mentor stay tuned as we find out as we dive deep into the work of Joseph Campbell and the journeys the hero's journeys home in Campbell's book the hero with a thousand faces the hero embarks on a circular journey comprising of 17 stages the book outlines Campbell's theory of mythical structure on monomyth and the archetypes within such stories Campbell was heavily influenced by the work of Sigmund Freud Carl Jung and Henrik Zimmer Campbell adapted Freud's and Jung's blends of consciousness and justice within the human psyche but he also added in Zimmer's work around humanity and divinity so Campbell's work went beyond the mind it went beyond the myth and it went into the cosmos he came up with 17 stages which takes a human being from an ordinary average human into a superhuman a superhero these stages are retold in many of our stories and tales throughout history from Buddha to Christ to Moses to more modern day heroes like neo in the matrix or Frodo from the Lord of the Rings are Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz and Peter Parker from spider-man all these following the same steps and same sequences lied out by Campbell's work Campbell lays the sequences out into three main acts departure from the ordinary world adventure into the special world and return to the ordinary world or you could say separation initiation and return within these acts were further stages and patterns which heroes followed Campbell was not only weaving the consciousness and the unconscious realms together he was also connecting unseen dots and patterns in the universe that connects every hero's story together Stage one call to adventure in the beginning the hero starts out in an average normal everyday situation this is where the adventure and the hero story begins they receive some unique or unusual information and hear the call or the rites of passage now this could be a call for transformation a call to facial shadow or a call to follow your purpose or in the case of neo it could be a call to see beyond the matrix Stage two is refusal of the call often when the call is given the hero will refuse to hear it their fears insecurities duties or obligations to the ordinary world will get the better of them how often has this happened to you when you're about to embark on something new and something adventurous and something that you've heard deep within your soul does fear creep in and do you remember in the Lord of the Rings when Frodo felt the call and didn't want to leave the Shire now could you imagine if he never left the Shire if he never left home how different his story would have been and that's the same for you when you hear the call and you allow your fears and insecurities take over stage 3 is supernatural aid once the hero consciously or unconsciously commits to his or her quest a guide or magical helper becomes known so this usually takes the form of a mentor or a wise old man or woman so if we go back to the matrix this would be the point where neo meets Morpheus but a mentor can also be somebody that you've never met it can be it can come in the form of books or videos or teachings for instance in my own life kal young is a huge mentor for me in my life and my work and he'll be somebody that I'll never meet in this lifetime so you need to use these steps as as metaphors rather than taking them literally stage for the final stage in the first act is crossing the threshold this is where the hero separates from the ordinary world and crosses over into the unexplained dangerous realm where rules and limits are unknown I remember when neo had the choice to take the red pill or the blue pill he was moving from the ordinary world into the special world and once the hero passes from the ordinary world into the special world the initiation begins now this doesn't have to be doesn't mean that the hero has to move to a physical place although it can be the special world can also be used as a metaphor for internal landscape and our internment world Stage five is belly of the whale so this is the stage where the hero has crossed the threshold from the ordinary world and has moved over to the special world and into the belly of the way or so the belly of the whale is where the hero may encounter some minor danger so I'm gonna give you an example from a movie here but it's a bit of a darker movie I don't want to just I want you to get a broad understanding of this topic and how it can relate to all areas of life so I just don't I don't want to just use fantasy so if we look at the film silence of the lambs when culeros goes into first interview Hannibal Lecter she's moving from an ordinary police officer she's crossing over from an ordinary can of police officer life into doing something extraordinary and Hannibal Lecter in this case would actually be seen as a mentor because in studying him she stops further murders happening down the line and I just wanted to give you that example so you can understand this in a more real-life tangible way as well Shayne shakes the road of trials this stage is a series of test tasks and our deals that the hero has to go through to begin their personal transformation the hero will often fail at these lessons and this can also be viewed as facing one's shadow breaking through personal limitations and beliefs and patterns that person may have and if we look at Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz a tornado swept Dorothy across the threshold into the Land of Oz where she had to follow a literal road of trails which was paved in yellow bricks to complete her hero's journey home now on the yellow brick road she met a scarecrow who needed a brain she met a man who needed a heart she met a lion that needed courage and she had toto who was her intuition so what this story is trying to show is that to be a whole person and to be a hero we need all of these elements within within us stage 7 is with the goddess no good story is complete without a little bit of love this is the point in the hero's journey where they need a break they need a new perspective they meet with the goddess now the goddess is used as a metaphor for unconditional love so the love that you wouldn't would receive from a mother but it can also come in the form of romantic love as we see with neo and Trinity in the matrix or it can come in the form of an advisor which is what happens when Glenda the Good Witch meets Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz stage 8 is temptations sometimes the goddess can turn into a temptress in some stories and sometimes the temptation for the heroes old comfortable life can take him away from the love of the goddess this step is the time when the material temptations may lead the hero to abandon or stray from his or her quest these temptations pick and Paul at the insecurities of the hero and the hero must fight to overcome their own fears in the labyrinth we see that this fantasy twist the the traditional gender roles as a teenage girl takes up the hero role and is tempted by the Goblin King and everything he has to offer once they have thrown away their temptations the hero answers the Tollman with father this is always an emotional part of the hero's journey in this that the hero must confront and be initiated by whatever holds the ultimate power in their lives in many stories this is a father or a father figure and this is the point where the hero finds within with within themselves a change they find new capabilities they morph into something new and something more capable to give you an example in Harry Potter Harry has to reconcile with the loss of his father figure don't fold off and now he has to take on Valdemar alone using the lessons that he learned in Hogwarts this is the stage where you can do something you've never done before that you've never had the strength to do before all the courage this is the time when you can really step forward into you with a new sense of company and clarity we must make our hero deal with apotheosis this is the stage of the hero's journey where a greater perspective is achieved it's the hero's a-half moment often embodied by the death of the hero's former self and in the spiritual sense it could be linked to the revelations that you have after the dark night of the soul the best example I can think of within a film is when neo comes to recognize the divinity with him he comes to recognize that the power he already has contained within himself and once he believes that he is indeed the one then he can literally become unstoppable and this is what can happen in in life when we have these deep realizations and revelations about why things have happened or why we've been faced with such challenges and lessons and it's really the moment where we turn our wounds into wisdom stage 11 is the ultimate boon it's the achievement of the goal of the quest where the person gets what they set out for and all the trials and tests we use to purify the person for the journey ahead in The Wizard of Oz it would be the moment when Dorothy kills the Wicked Witch and gets the broomstick the mission is accomplished and the world can rest at ease knowing that it's safe from evil step 12 is the refusal to return having found lists from the ordinary world in the special world the hero refuses to return home but there must return home to share the boon in the ordinary world so if you think about it the Shire might seem boring now to Frodo and the last thing that Harry Potter wants after becoming a wizard is to be put back under the stairs but sometime the return can be just as dangerous as the adventure step 13 is the magical flight this is the point in the hero's journey where they must get out alive often requiring the help of the individuals they met along the way Dorothy still has to get back to Kansas and the solution often at this point is taking a leap of faith and it's this point in the hero's journey and in our old journeys where we call on the people that we've met along the path and we call on our own inner faith stage 14 is rescued from without so just because Frodo destroyed the one ring to rule all does not mean he gets a free ride back to the Shire so everything that he faced on the way in he's gonna face on the way out as well so in life this would be linked to our lessons and our lessons persist in an hour lessons repeating and our shadow creeping back in James 15 crossing the return threshold the circular journey is coming to a head once the hero is back home it's time to acknowledge their change in character crossing the return threshold is the stage where the hero has left the chaotic special world and has returned home and this can be seen as a return back to self but also on this journey and if we have been on big spiritual journeys and we have had transformations there can also be a time where you need to process and integrate and this would be seen as that time step 16 is master of two worlds the hero was survived in a venture in the chaos realm and now also survives in the ordinary realm this makes him or her the master of two worlds just like neo in the matrix once he learns he's the one he's able to move freely between the real world and the world of the matrix once the hero is back home they come back and expanded more embodied version of themselves before ready to move into the weird world at a moment's notice so this is likened to if you have been through a big spiritual shift and being able to master both the spirit world and the 3d world so integration integrating your divinity with your humaneness is key in this stage on the hero's journey the final step is where they all live happily ever after in many ways the hero's journey is about death and rebirth the story may manifest as the death of an aspect of a character and the birth of some new ways of life the moral of the story is that change is constant the spiritual aspects of the story is that we have an eternal spirit that will guide us and help us shed our perceived demons and helpful navigate the labyrinth of life and help us to be the hero that we were born to be hope you found our little journey helpful Alec rat-like storytime I really found Joseph Campbell's work very helpful
