[Music] women greatest college football team of all time discussion arises there are a few teams that generally get brought up there's a 2004 USC team that became just the second team to start and finish the season as number one team in the AP poll and dominated teams by an average margin of 25 point 2 points per game in route to a BCS Championship or there was a 2009 Alabama team that jump-started Nick Saban's reign of terror in Tuscaloosa and obliterated a powerhouse Florida team in the SEC title game that year's Heisman winner Mark Ingram and what would finish as a number two defense in the country led Nick Saban's juggernaut to an undefeated season and captured savings first title at Alabama some like to look longingly through their Rose tinted glasses at some relics of the past like the 1945 army team or one of Notre Dame's powerhouse teams of yesteryear of course there are a handful of other teams and often get thrown into this mix the 2005 Texas Longhorns 2013 Florida State Seminoles and so on and so forth but without any hyperbole there is no question that the greatest college football team ever assembled as the 2001 Miami Hurricanes Leben off is a guide the 11 defensive guys of the 22 starters that started that night for the Hurricanes 11 of them were first-round draft pick I mean on name recognition alone the 2001 cane should skyrocket to the top of everyone's shortlist ed Reed Sean Taylor Andre Johnson Clinton Portis the list goes on Vince Wilfork Jonathan Vilma Frank Gore and that is just seven of the 38 players that were drafted from that legendary 2001 roster listen to some of these crazy draft statistics of the 38 players drafted the team had an incredible 17 players chosen in the first round and that isn't even including talents like Clinton Portis or Frank Gore that fell to the second round in their respective drafts 19 to 22 Miami starters that year were drafted after leaving Lee you this team produced 13 different Pro Bowlers who earned a cumulative 43 Pro Bowl selections among the bunch 25 of the 32 NFL franchises have rostered one of the 17 first-round picks which shows just how impactful that team was on the league long term there have been plenty of great college football teams but for one to have so many players make waves at the next level matt is special if the roster isn't ratio of transitioning to the NFL and the success that the players have the highest level isn't enough for you well don't fret they also earned the distinction of greatest college football team ever by what they did one they were actually in Coral Gables on the most basic level Miami was undefeated unanimous national champions a distinction which many of us remember was far too uncommon pre college football playoffs yet Miami's resume only gets more in presidency take a deeper dive to that magical 2001 campaign cumulatively Miami outscored its opponents 512 to 117 that is an average margin of victory of nearly 33 points per game and that includes a two-point victory on the road against number 14 Virginia Tech and an 11 point victory on the road against Boston College otherwise every other game Miami played in May won by at least three touchdowns it's not like the Hurricanes were playing some cupcake schedule either the Hurricanes open the season in Happy Valley in delivered a 33 to 7 drubbing to Penn State which was the worst home lost in the jokaah era they closed the season with four straight 8p2 top 15 matchups and then it was that rivalry game in Tallahassee against number 13 ranked Florida State Seminoles sandwiched in between whammy didn't just win these games either but one were double-digit victories all this regular season success wouldn't have meant a thing if they didn't end the season with the ring Miami at the Rose Bowl is eight and a half point favorites against an eleven and one Nebraska team that featured Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch under center and let's just say that the Canes didn't disappoint their backers Nebraska tried its best to control the clock early but Miami started building momentum towards the end of the first quarter when Ken Dorsey connected with future NFL star Andre Johnson on a 50-yard touchdown strike Miami then stormed towards a 3400 halftime lead and never looked back think about it the Hurricanes really only needed one half of football from its daughters to a blurry an 11 and one Cornhuskers team so how exactly was his Miami team so dominant you might ask sure they were coming off of an 11 and 1 season in 2000 a season in which many people believe Miami was enough of a national championship bid but the school was not a perennial powerhouse at the time and was very much in flux head coach Butch Davis departed for a job with the Cleveland Browns in the NFL defensive coordinator Greg Schiano took the head coaching job at Rutgers leaving offensive coordinator Larry Coker to take the reins as a first time head coach fortunately for Miami the transition was hand with relative grace hemming managed to retain the bulk of their insane freshmen recruiting class which included now household names like Vince Wilfork Antrel Rolle and Frank Gore and is simply amazing and think that most of these guys were just role players on this team that is how special the group really was as important that young talent on the roster was it pales in comparison to the return of one rising senior who stands alone above all other stars that miami had at the time had read Rita just earned all-american honors as a junior and surely could have been a high draft pick had he left for the 2001 draft but he found he had unfinished business in Miami Reed felt that he and his brothers have been wronged by the system and he was going to be damned if he didn't come back for one more go at winning a championship man as per usual Reid refused to take no for an answer Reid was the heart and soul of this wagon and it is hard to imagine the Hurricanes running the table without him once the drama from the coaching changes subsided when the season actually started the offense thrived under Coker and newly appointed OC Randy Shannon junior quarterback Ken Dorsey had an excellent year at the helm of Miami's efficient pro-style offense throwing for 23 touchdowns and notching a passer rating of 146 point one this is good enough to earn Dorsey the maxwell award an all-conference selection Big East Offensive Player of the Year and a third-place finish in the Heisman voting Summa Dorsey success has to be attributed to the Canes imposing and balanced and frankly unstoppable rushing attack the three-headed monster of Clinton Portis Frank Gore and Willis McGahee led the way in Miami averaged 200 4.6 rushing yards per game an astronomical number while Portis was to go - back in 2001 all three rushers went on to have excellent NFL careers 12 other hurricanes joined Dorsey as first-team all-conference selections and six others including Eddie Reid Bryant McKinney and Jeremy Shockey all earned first-team all-pro honors well that recognition was the result of a group that averaged an incredible forty two point seven points per game which was third in all of college football and that was with the coaching staff subbing in backups and taking the foot off the gas at halftime and a number of blowouts if that unit had gone full speed ahead all season long God knows how many points they would have picked up malla Miami offense was clearly a force to be reckoned with college football has historically been littered with high-powered offenses what was so scary about this Miami Hurricanes team was that the defense is considered to have been far and away better than Miami's offense was a third-ranked offense in the country let's start with the fact that ten of the eleven starters for the eleven second stringers and all seven reserves were drafted to the NFL somewhere in Kentucky John Calipari is licking his chops thinking about that ratio and the one starter who wasn't drafted linebacker Chris Campbell tragically died in the car accident just a month after the Rose Bowl the defense finished number one in the country allowing just 9.8 points per game this was no bend don't break defense may downright delete their opponents surrendering just 270 total yards per game the unit prided itself on taking offensive to the defensive side of the ball constantly applying pressure on the opposing offense which resulted in them forcing ridiculous 4.1 turnovers per game and rain hauled in nine interceptions alone another insane stat from this offensive defense that hurricanes defense only allowed 13 touchdowns all season while scoring eight just preposterous this was largely due to the immense amount of talent that the Canes had in the defensive backfield I mean come on Sean Taylor was backing up a tree at free safety it is no surprise that they allowed just three passing touchdowns all season while notching 27 interceptions four of which were returned for touchdowns so yeah the Canes secondary finished the season essentially at a net positive and point and six of the cornerback from the team were drafted to the NFL but for them being first-round picks it doesn't get much better than that now on the off chance that Miami's high-powered offense was faltering or if it's smothering defense was having an off game coach Coker had luxuriate leaning on one of the best special teams units as well his punter Freddie Capshaw earned all-conference honors while place kicker Todd Sievers and punt returner Phillip Buchanon earned first-team all-american honors talk about an embarrassment of riches unfortunately this is one of those sports debates we will never really be able to prove one way or another enactus Lee falls into the same category as other legendary hypotheticals lebron vs MJ could Alabama be to insert the worst team in the NFL here or even what Babe Ruth be good against today's pitching as much as I'm sure we don't love to see this 2001 Miami team score off with the 2009 Crimson Tide bad news the technology just doesn't exist yet as a result we are forced into semantics based arguments like how do we define the greatest in context of all time college football teams some people believe it is based on NFL talent on the roster while others think we need to look at each candidate's strengths of schedule or which team today's advanced statistics love the most well there is no single right answer everyone values these factors differently but if you ask me that 2001 Miami team stands alone as the greatest college football team ever assembled the Miami Hurricanes is the best team ever assembled hmm nobody can touch it hmm it'd be one thing if Miami had been like this years underachieving Duke men's basketball team whose talent didn't live up to the hype during the season Papa Kane's had all of their bases covered undefeated undisputed national champions check massive draft class check elite NFL talent check sure other teams like Jimbo Fisher's 2013 Florida State Seminoles had epic trapped classes it is impressive that they had 22 of 24 starters drafted but the actual talent level simply isn't comparable when Miami had was special and it should be remembered as such there's a reason that ESPN produced a two-part documentary on that era in South Florida the 2001 team was a perfect team hype was building around the University the recruiting talent pool in the area had never been deeper and everyone wanted to be part of the you and that group of guys capitalized on it it is an undeniable facet of human nature to look past the obvious answer sitting right in front of you that is why we see people searching way back through the annals of history to the 1945 army team or the 1972 USC Trojans or one of the mid-90s Nebraska teams because it is just so obvious this Miami team was on a whole other level that people feel compelled to search for an alternative screw that let's just appreciate the Canes for what they were the greatest college football team ever assembled period and if you're not subscribed yet feel free to do that right now by
