excited to lift up the name of jesus this morning who feels blessed to be in the house of gods who's grateful to be alive we're so grateful that jesus is god and he's the king of kings he is the lord of lords and he's woken us up this morning and we can come in and we can fellowship and praise his name i just want to read psalm 150 which says praise the lord praise god in his sanctuary praise him in his mighty heavens praise him for his acts of power praise him for his surpassing greatness praise him with the sound of the trumpet praise him with the hope and the liar praise him with the tambourine and dancing praise him with the strings and pipe praise him with the clashing of symbols praise him with the resounding symbols let everything that have breath praise the lord praise the lord god has given us breath so we must praise his name because he is worthy he paid the ultimate price so the least that we have to give him is our praise so i want you all to lift up a praise unto jesus amen as i welcome up the worship team i'm just going to open up in prayer lord i just thank you i thank you for your grace i thank you for your mercy i thank you for your goodness i pray lord that you will just have your way in this place this morning and today that your holy spirit will take full control of this service that your name will be lifted up lord even if people have bought things here today baggage trauma disappointment lord i pray that they'll just lay it all down today and just give you praise the praise that you deserve i pray lord that in this service lord chains will be broken that that deliverance will take place that people will be healed that we will see miracles signs and wonders and most of all lord that people will give their lives to you that we will see salvation today in the name of jesus have your way we give you all the glory and all the praise amen [Applause] [Music] so basically i went to greece to fill in the ann's wedding and um when i came back you know when you come back you gotta do a day two test and i did the day to test and on friday it said that i was covered 19 positive and i was like what i'm in the name of jesus i rebuke it i am not sick i have not got this thing so i told possibilities that possibly i have not got it and he goes well you know what go home take another test so i took an antigen test when i got home it said negative so i said what is this no the devil is trying to stuck me in my tracks because i've gotta come and do worship and i've got so many other things that god has got planned for me to do you know when you have purpose in your life i'm telling you the enemy will try and stop you so anyway so saturday morning now testing trays people they're bailing off my line and i was like you know what i i answered the phone i said listen i said i know it's not your full sweetheart but these people are trying to tell me i've got covered i haven't got coving i am positive that i am negative right so somebody up in here has to um authorize a retake so long story short jumped through loads of who loads of phone calls finally i took a test and they they booked a test for me and i'm happy to say i'm negative but the thing is sometimes we just take what they tell us bro see i'm saying they take we take what they tell us and today if you have any mountains in your life i want you to declare them removed in the name of jesus when i tell you that my god is able because the thing is i might have had covered and god healed me i don't know or maybe they just made a mistake but all i know is my god is able and i am standing here today only because god made a way so this morning i want you to do something different there's only a few of us here so you online you need to make an effort and come to the house of god you know because there's blessings in the house there's so much in the house for you come to the house but anyway that's another story so if you can come forward cover your mask if you want comfort we are going to release some things in the atmosphere we're going to praise god until those walls come down is anybody with me all right let's go they're not ready did all that speech know best [Music] for nothing can catch you by surprise you've got this figured out and i'm trusting us now cause when it looks as if we can't win open up your arms and step in for nothing can catch you by surprise and you've got this in control and now we know that you made a way yes it did when our backs were against the wall and it looked as if it was over it's you you made a wave and was standing here [Music] me [Music] and there is nothing nothing that's impossible and we're standing here only because say [Music] oh is oh [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] yes you the walls to fall with your power you perform me wrinkles and there that's is and we're standing only because you made [Music] family the bible says that pride comes before a fall the bible says that pride comes before destruction and sometimes our own pride stops us from worshiping god the way we're supposed to be sometimes we're too focused on what other people are doing if other people are watching us how we see ourselves that we're not willing to submit and let go [Music] from sister murillo's testimony this morning throughout all the songs we've sang they're all exalting our father allowing us to see that he is fighting our battles that we can overcome through him that he is our champion so family i want to encourage you if you've been battling if you've been fighting if you feel a battle or a fight coming up this is the time to surrender this is the time to let go this is the time to release pride comes before a foster did not let your own pride stop you from worshiping god he wants to fight your battles he wants you to win but that could only happen if you get out of the way and you let him do it so let's worship let's exhort let's release let the champion come forth let us overcome and let god win the battle in jesus name with your power [Music] [Music] oh [Music] is [Music] is [Music] [Music] oh [Music] he made a [Music] you make all things new yes you he's so worthy thank you worship team um thank you church you can all take your seat my name's lydia and i'm your moderator for today um i was asked to give a word of encouragement in regards to our theme of this month which is the greatest help and we all know that's the holy spirit that is god and yeah god was just speaking to me and i wrote a bit down so yeah god led me to the book of acts after jesus had promised that his disciples that he would the father would send the helper as he was departing from earth and then reading about the day of pentecost in the upper room where the holy spirit filled the place and they all began to speak in tongues and it says tongues of fire rested on them which is so profound but what really stuck out to me is the aftermath of when they were filled with the holy spirit and how everything changed after that moment in the upper room i just want to read two significant scriptures um which first is acts 1 8 and that says but you will receive power when the holy spirit comes in you and you will be my witnesses in jerusalem and in judea and samaria and to the end of the earth and also acts 4 31 that says after they prayed the place where they were meeting was shaken and they were all filled with the holy spirit and spoke the word of god boldly we see from that um these two scriptures that something happens after a person receives the holy spirit a change takes place a transformation a person is very is now able to look in the very power of god walking in authority and boldness and this is essential for christian living the church truly started once the disciples were filled with the holy spirit we can't be the church or build the kingdom of god here on earth without the holy spirit it just won't work if the disciples and the early church needed the holy spirit then how much more do we especially all the manners going on in this world once they were filled we saw the disciples go out preaching the word with boldness people were being healed and delivered from demons even by their shadows and the kingdom of god was being established on the earth in a powerful way the holy spirit is known as the ruach of god ruac is a hebrew word that can mean breath wind life or spirit as humans we breathe in oxygen to keep us alive the same way the holy spirit the breath of god gives us spiritual life we cannot survive spiritually without him he is honestly the greatest gift god could give as the spirit of god is the same spirit that raised christ jesus from the dead and now he's living inside of us giving us everything we need to live this life the way god intended us to live it i don't know where i'd be without the holy spirit he's been my ever-present help through the tough the toughest seasons that i've been through and there's no way i would have made it without him he's who i've cried out to in really different and difficult times in my life and i need him every minute of every day i can't survive without him and the the amazing thing is is that the god of the universe the god that created the heavens and the earth has chosen us human beings with the messiest past that falls short daily yet he still entrusts us with his holy spirit because he loves us and he wants to commune with us and knows that with him without him we are not capable of anything we need his supernatural strength and his constant help he goes everywhere with us and we can't escape him throughout the scriptures we see that it's always been in god's very nature to help his people for example the way he delivered the israelites out of egypt how he fought for the armies of israel and how he kept dave daniel alive in the lion's den god so evidently loves to help his people especially in what seems like impossible situations i love how david and the psalmist constantly reminded themselves and the reader of god's help in hand psalms 40 says i wait patiently for the lord and he turned to me and heard my cry he lifted me up the slimy pair of the mud and the maya he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand the holy spirit equips us with power and authority he teaches us changes us and renews our mind and he really is the greatest gift god lives on the inside of us and promises us that he will never leave us so we are never truly alone we will never have to fight battles alone we have him there are a lot of things that complete that are completely impossible to do by our own strength i don't know maybe you're really struggling right now maybe you're you know struggling with a sin or you know you're struggling with your faith with an addiction and it seems like you're fighting a losing battle and that you could never have victory but fear not and don't worry because the holy spirit is available to you this is a promise from god to you as an individual by the grace of god he will equip you with what you need to overcome these challenges in life he's an ever-present help as psalms 46 says the holy spirit helps us to understand god's love he helps us to love god and others he helps us to help others he helps us to fight spiritual battles he gives us boldness he gives us spiritual gifts he convicts us he enables us to produce good fruit he gives us freedom joy and peace he warns us he is the resurrection power in us he helps us to do the work of god and great exploits he helps us to know the heart of god and no christian can survive this walk without the holy spirit so whatever the situation is or if you ever feel alone be comforted with the fact that with the holy spirit you lack nothing nothing at all because you will never need anything else because this is the greatest gift that has already been given to us and that's a promise for every believer amen amen um now i just want to we want to go into a time of prayer and while i was kind of praying about this and asking god what we could pray about corporately the first thing that came to my mind was the persecuted church you know we're so blessed that we live in a country that we can come to church on a sunday you know we can have bibles um on our phones physical bibles we can even preach on the streets without being killed but there's countries that won't allow christians to publicly share their faith and they're locked up in jail you know in china they can't even have access to bibles they're meeting in underground churches and i think we need to remember that these are our brothers and sisters you know and we should stand with them in prayer because that's what they want right now is prayer the second prayer point um is for this local area forest gate and the borough of nuem um you know we live in an area that's like full of muslims and other religions and you know they're blinded to the truth i know we have a church we come in on a sunday and there's people out there that are living on this road and in this area that don't know jesus and haven't heard the gospel so let's pray that first and foremost god gives us boldness to go out and to proclaim to our local area that jesus is alive and that he is the only way to the father there is no other way and that also the holy spirit will bring people into the church that they won't even know why they'll just turn up and be like i just felt the need to come in um so yeah and also the last prayer point is to pray for our youth specifically young men you know i've been hearing a lot about violence stabbings guns all of that recently and it's really grieving me because young people are just dying you know they have a whole future ahead of them and their lives have been taken like that and this is a spiritual thing you know this is spiritual warfare the enemy is trying to take out especially our young men because he knows that there's a there's a promise that god's place in their lives and he doesn't want that to come to fruition so if you could all stand and we can pray about uh these prayer points starting with the persecuted church lord we just thank you we thank you for your love we thank you for your grace we thank you for your mercy we thank you lord that in your name there is power and that you listen you hear our prayers lord nothing surprises you lord i lift up the persecuted church to you right now those countries that won't allow christians to to live out their faith lord i just pray lord that you will give them strength in this time that your will be done lord that they will in the midst of sorrow in the midst of confusion or that they will feel your peace that surpasses all understanding that they will still declare lord declare and proclaim what you have done and that whoever is persecuting them will actually be um will be moved by them lord that we will even see those who have persecuted them give their lives to gods i pray lord that they will continue to seek you with all their hearts that they will continue to lean on your presence lord that they will continue to stand firm in the faith lord even unto death lord i pray you will take full control that your holy spirit lord will move upon them jesus and you will just bless them lord you will keep them if it is your will lord and i pray lord that you will continue just to minister to them in the name of jesus lord i lift up this local area lord to you a forest gate of new him lord lord i pray for revival lord in this area lord i pray that we will see an influx of people coming into this church and giving their lives to you lord i pray lord that you will remove the blindness from their rival if they're in a false religion lord and then they will open their eyes to the truth that is you lord that you are the way the truth and the life i pray you will give us boldness to evangelize lord to evangelize to the lost lord you will set up divine appointments lord that that we'll speak to him in the trains we'll speak to them on the buses we'll speak to them on the streets lord and talk about what you've done in our lives lord and that their lives will be changed and we'll see a great move of god in this area in the name of jesus lord i lift up lord um our young people to you specifically our young men lord that involved in gangs are involved in crime lord i pray lord that you will turn their situation around lord that they will turn away from that and that they will turn to you lord i pray you will minister to them i pray that your holy spirit will invade their lives that they will have an encounter with you lord that will wreck them jesus that they'll turn away lord from all evil that i come against this spiritual warfare these the spiritual darkness i pray that it will lift in the name of jesus whatever the root is lord i pray lord that you will just um break it in the name of jesus and that we will see them drop their weapons they will drop that lifestyle and they will come to know you as their lord and savior lord i pray that we won't hear about any of this um gun crime on knife crime again jesus but we will see instead of seeing them on the streets but we will see them in this place in the name of jesus lord i thank you lord i thank you that you've heard our prayers i i thank you lord that actually you care about these things more than we do lord and it is your will for people to come to know you it is your will for every soul to to have a relationship with you so we give you all the glory and all the praise in jesus name amen amen um thank you jesus um you can all take your seats now i'm going to read out the announcements um they should be on the screen um first of all first of all we have bible study happening on wednesday evenings is at 7 30 7 30 on wednesday evenings um the topic will be the greatest help um i believe i don't do you have to sign up you don't have to sign up and it's also on youtube and we also have a monthly support group on zoom um which is on friday the 24th of september at 7 pm and also i'd like to call up pastor jason to talk about ushering good afternoon everybody so at the moment we've got our lovely team that come in on a weekly basis and they're doing a great job but we need more help so if you come here on a weekly basis and you want to just try it out try try out ushering if you could see a gaffer where's the gaffer give them away for gaffer now listen if you're going to be an usher you need to make sure that you are smiling that you come with a good heart and that you can just lead people to their seats in a good way don't come here vex and then try and tell people go there you can't do that you can't you can't you can't you just come here with a smile and if you're willing to just try it out just please see your gaffer and then so that we can just grow grow the team and then the people that are working week in week out can take like a break and maybe just do it once a month but we need help and um come and help please god bless you guys god bless you amen so now we're gonna go into a are currently handing out um yeah given is such a blessing to the church you know we're able to to do so much um for the kingdom with your giving so yeah just give freely whatever god's uh moves and tells you to give just give freely he loves a cheerful giver and thank you to everyone who gives on a week in and week out basis we really do appreciate it and now i'm going to invite marilla up on the stage to lead us into our praise god today i i thought you know let's just sing an old an old hymn because we don't sing them enough do we nowadays me age show me age but you know god has just been so i've just been reflecting this week and i'm just just how faithful god is like i just want to encourage you the more you give the more you receive like don't think about it in a natural think about in the spiritual because the things of the spirit defied the things in the natural so really and truly the more i give the more skin i should be but i'm finding the more i give the more i get back the more flash i am so i just want to encourage you give give of your finance if you can give with your time give to others be kind be generous because our god has been so kind and generous to us like when we don't even deserve it and you know and if people don't say thank you it's okay because i feel like god is saying thank you my child thank you my son thank you my daughter and you know don't expect where you sow sometimes god will cause you to reap where you have not even sown so don't forget it don't forget the benefits of god it's so important i just want to leave you with that little encouragement and sing great is thy faithfulness oh god my father there is no shadow turning within thy faith is not thy compassion they feel not as thou has [Music] thou been shall be that means that he never changes he's the same yesterday today and forever oh god my father there is no shadow [Music] they feel not how thou has been thou forever will be great is my faithfulness wait is there at six o'clock till nine please come out and celebrate with me hopefully our other congregations can come out i was at arthur worship this morning so good to see brethren worshiping over there amen and the church growing amen and pharaok and just worshiping them just for 20 minutes and then running to be here with you guys but god is awesome so that's this saturday at 6 00 p.m um right here and saturday sunday the 19th is back to church sunday amen it is a national bachelor church sunday but we're just claiming that here and we're inviting every one of our um online um computerized social media experts and for those i'm not trying to take the mickey actually i am but please help me jesus god just please try and break yourself out of this habit that you've got yourself into there is a habit that hebrew says we must adopt he says don't forget the habit of gathering yourselves together he says as the manner of some is especially as you see that they draw an iron we've got obviously through the pandemic and everything we've got out of that habit and you're very comfortable coming once every six weeks or even you haven't even returned next week sunday no holes bars you don't have to register next week we'll have something in the door where you can scan yourself in register your own self so that if you something happens and we need to notify you that can happen but that's next week sunday amen we're opening up we're inviting the saints back we're saying still please let's um the virus has not gone away it's still infecting people so we're not inviting us to become careless um we're in saying let's get back to worship and pressing in amen and seeing i really believe god wants to do something i just feel he needs the energy of the church for us to press through so i'm still inviting us to respect each other's social distances um and some people are not comfortable hugging shaking hands etc let's try and work around that um and also um sanitizing washing your hands and keeping each other safe in jesus name amen praise god so that's next week sunday a big shout out to natalie's her birthday today happy birthday natalie hallelujah any other september people here any other september people the greatest month in the entire year yes we are the january conceived people like some happened in january nine months later september here we are [Music] [Laughter] but yeah praise god well we thank you team for leading us into worship and for the band for playing beautifully for all those who are serving let's give our greet our guest ministry those who work through the year registering and scanning people in and sacrificing literally they they miss out on the worship because they do that job so let's come on one more time give them a big hand we appreciate you guys amen and seriously as part of jay said we do need some people our team has kind of fallen apart our ushers over the time and so we need to rebuild our ushering team we need to navigate people to seats so that there is a nice um order that happens so we really need you to step up you probably if enough of you come we only need you once a month to serve one sunday so please step up join the ushers team and help that and like the only qualification is like pastor jay said you've got to be a friendly person that's my and also tough skin because some people are wicked and cruel like and you know you've got to get them to their seat and they're looking at you and cutting their eye and all that but you've got to smile and carry on you know so just need to have a tough skin and a big smile in jesus name well we've got a preacher today amen he's i'm sorry lydia thank you for leading the service so well thank you bless god as lydia you know lydia is like she's the oldest member in this church with us like when we started this church 24 and a half years ago lydia was there as a two-year-old or a one-year-old baby and to see her standing here delivering the word of god is so awesome praise god hallelujah praise god praise god so i'm going to introduce a young man who was um came here well i don't even know how long now 10 years no no 11 years ah 2010 say 11 years ago amen and just watched him soar grow become a husband become a father an elder a man in the house a very loved guy he's probably like one of the favorite people here everybody loves him he's he's not like me i'm like mama he's like pure jam like like peanut butter and jelly like he's ice cream and custard and now that that's a mix does it like he's just he's just a nice guy amen but he's full of the word of god very very intellectual very very theological but also holy spirit filled amen and we love him to bits come on shout out for mk as he comes to deliver the word of god [Music] one two one two come on let's make some notes for jesus he's the reason why we're here father we thank you we love you we need you help us today in jesus name amen good afternoon family so good to be back here i thought i wasn't getting invited back from the last time but i made it back i made it back i made it back honestly it's such a it's a pleasure to be here today and um yeah i just want to echo what pastor p said about ashes now lord knows i've been trying to get the ushers back in the house since moses parted a red sea but antiago took over and she's galvanized the teams i just want to give a big shout out to auntie agafa [Applause] and it's good to see the ushers in the house but yeah we do need more we need help amen and also to give a massive shout out to the tech team now if you're like me and you don't know the words to worship songs and your wife always tells you to learn the words and you don't learn the words then you will praise god for the for the tech team the night before service amen because me i never know the words but thank god for the tech team they're always there helping us participate and engage in the service both physically and online as well so i just want to give a massive shout out to the tech team and also i want to give a massive shout out i don't know if they're listening but once again to mr and mrs jarrett phil and leanne praise god for them and their union they celebrated one week of marriage this week already there's somewhere honeymoon in i'm your honeymooning honeymoon sorry sir god honeymoon honeymoon they're honey moon in they're honeymooning so yeah we're just gonna thank god for their lives they made one week of marriage and um yeah we was in greece last week imagine i was i was on a beach last week and then this week i'm knee-deep and changing nappies life comes at you fast amen but yeah i got some holiday blues but hopefully that doesn't seep into the message anyway let's get into the message today i was really encouraged last week so last week i was poolside in greece i know that sounds bougie but i was poolside in greece watching the service and i was really encouraged by colin glenn and seeing him on his feet again preaching a word with passion preaching a word of power i was so excited at one point i nearly threw my bible and serena's beats headphones into the pool when colin said satan if that was your best shot watch mine i was like colin came on a revival thing he came back with so much passion but he opened up the series beautifully and he reminded us about the three kinds of help that is available to us and he spoke about man's help he spoke about angelic health and he spoke about god's help and colin if you're listening thank you because you set the ball rolling i know last week you said that you wanted to kind of build on everybody else's but i'm building on yours today amen and i wanted to focus specifically on that god help aspect and today i want to focus exclusively on the spirit's help amen so we're going to pray and then we're going to get straight into it so father i just want to thank you for allowing us today to come together to fellowship to worship lord it's always good to be in a house it's always good to worship with our brothers and our sisters both here and virtually and lord like pastor peace said we're praying that everybody will come out and come back into the house again and so holy spirit we ask that you will just encourage everybody build up that faith lord to step out so that we could all worship in unison as we always have done right here in your presence god and father i just want to pray for today's word holy spirit help me help us we want to learn we want to grow we want to be encouraged we want to be strengthened we want to be convicted we want to be transformed and that's everything that you do and we ask this in jesus name and the whole church said amen so family the title of my message today is the forgotten god the forgotten god and by way of analogy i'm gonna i'm sorry and by introduction i'm gonna open up by giving an analogy now just a warning this analogy is a bit wild it's a bit one so don't cancel me yet hey don't cancel me don't crucify me don't send pastor p email yeah it's just an analogy i'm just using it to make a point have a bit of anticipation for it do you want to know what the analogy is all right cool so here's the analogy here's the analogy see when we think about the father the son and the spirits and the members of the godhead sometimes we can think of them the same way in the same way that we think of destiny's child now wait a minute wait a minute wait a minute wait a minute let me land turn to your neighbor and say let him land let me land what i'm not saying is that the godhead or the trinity is like destiny's child or that destiny child is like the godhead but what the point i'm trying to make is if i was to ask everybody here and people listening online feel free to type in the chat if i was to ask you to name the members of destiny's child who would you face who would you say first who would you say second kelly kelly and obviously last we'll say hashtag poor michelle we'll say hashtag for michelle last didn't it i don't know why but and the reason why we will think of the members in that way is purely because one arguably beyonce is probably the most successful member of the group is that fair to say yeah beyonce stands in the house and then obviously we'll say kelly's second because obviously she made that one song with nelly that absolutely slapped the song was called dilemma or something like that i remember that song and my mom knows all the words to that song but she doesn't know all the words it's a weird song it's a weird one this is a bit of a side note in that video i don't know if anyone noticed this but there's a clip where nelly is sending a text message to kelly using an excel spreadsheet they don't catch that i don't know if nelly had access to some technology that none of us did but in the video if you watch it again he sends a message to kelly using an excel spreadsheet it's mad anyway i digress i digress the point is that we'll think of beyonce first we'll think of kelly's second and then we'll think of michelle last and i use that analogy to say that sometimes when you think about the father son and the spirit we can think of them in the same way because we can think of god the father first because quite naturally the whole of the old testament centers around god yahweh god isn't it so much so that even when we pray in our prayer life we address god the father first isn't it and that's right i'm not saying that that's wrong jesus said matthew 6 when you pray our father so it's not wrong some of us say our father lord father lord god so much in our prayers that there's no room for the holy spirit to even get a mention but again no shade if you do that that's you no shame secondly we think of that god the son quite naturally because the whole bible story climaxes in jesus christ isn't it and most of the epistles are about jesus and so quite naturally we think of jesus second and i don't i think i've heard anybody close their prayers in the name of the spirit all of us close our prayer in jesus name isn't it again i'm not saying that that's wrong that's appropriate jesus said you ask anything in my name it shall be done it's appropriate so in that sense even in our prayer and when you look at the bible the holy spirit can turn into the forgotten god and it's not just even in the bible when we jump out of the bible now and we look at church history and you read about how the church exploded and expanded out of first century palestine and into the rest of the world you see the first five centuries is is literally uh the early christian community defending the the common christian beliefs and most of them center around the doctrine of god because some people believe that the god of the old testament was completely different from the god of the new testament other believe others believed that the god of the bible was indistinguishable from creation so that everything is god and god is everything and so you see a lot of the church fathers a lot of the early christian community were writing a lot of content around the doctrine of god at the same time we also see the same thing happening about the doctrine of christ some people believe that jesus was completely god other people believed that jesus was completely man some believe that he was god and man but they just couldn't make sense of how those two natures fitted into one person amen and so you see a lot of content about the doctrine of christ or christology but the holy spirit is the forgotten god there's not much content around the holy spirit until you fast forward about 900 1900 years and you get to the close of the 19th century and the opening of the 20th century and we see revival kicking off in america a preacher a black preacher named william j seymour in 1904 to 1906 he's holding meetings in azusa street 315 azusa street and in his meetings we're seeing outbreaks of the holy spirit the gifts of the holy spirit people are speaking in tongues now people are prophesying words of wisdom is flying around people are getting healed and that spills out of america into latin america and then across the world and not only that it spills out of the pentecostal denomination as it were into other areas of christianity so now we hear about roman catholics experiencing the gifts of the holy spirit we hear about baptists welcoming the gifts of the holy spirit we hear about reformed people talking about the gifts of the holy spirit and so when we get to the 21st century all of a sudden there's so much interest in the forgotten god and so we fast forward now all of a sudden everybody's interested in knowing about the doctrine of the holy spirit everyone's fascinated and wanted to define what the doctrine of the holy spirit is all about and that's all well and good and so when we get to ourselves now even some of our own personal first encounters with the holy spirit it's a bit of a strange one can i be real church can i be real some of us we introduce the holy spirit to people in a spooky way is that fair to say someone will come to church for the first time and you're asking them brother do you have the holy spirit and they're like bro i just got here what what's this holy spirit how do i get do i do i go to reception and so much so when i was first a christian this is how i'm going to give two examples someone was explaining to me their exploits with the holy spirit so imagine i'm chilling and this person says to me yeah one time i was in the service and then all of a sudden boom i was taken up me i was looking up as allah and they said that once they was taken up they were in the streets that was on the streets of nigeria for about two three hours no shades of nigerians it was yula but i was on the streets they were on the streets of nigeria for about two three hours and then all of a sudden boom they came back down me i'm looking down as well and then the person said to me that it was almost as if no time had elapsed from when they went and when they came back so i was like in my head i'm thinking so i don't need a passport to travel around the world and that holy spirit can just translate me straight out of the uk into barbados or the maldives or that was the first example i was like okay wow i need to start doing that and then the second person that was trying to describe to me the holy spirit so this person was like there's seven spirits there's seven holy spirits now i did he was reading revelations where it speaks about the seven spirits of god all symbolism in that but then i was like seven spirits of god i was so shook to pray to the holy spirit imagine you're praying and seven spirits turn up and say don't be afraid what do you mean there's seven of you why am i not going to be afraid of seven spirits turning up in my bedroom and that telling me not to be afraid there's seven of you bro i get scared when i'm walking down the street and i see seven man let alone seven spirits coming up in my bedroom [Applause] but he was adamant yeah that is that is the holy spirit and my point i'm trying to make is that some of us we introduce people to the holy spirit in a spooky way so much so that our first encounters or our first impressions of the holy spirit is a bit it's a bit leave it yeah it's a bit strange it's a bit weird and the point is around us today's sermon is literally around if we if we're able to correctly define and understand the work of the holy spirit then we will be protected against the wrong kind of help if we know the right work of the spirit we'll be protected against the wrong kind of help so if someone comes to you and says eat grass because the holy spirit tells you to you tell them say and get behind me you know like that because if we know the right work of the spirit we'll be able to be protected against the wrong kind of help and so that is the focus of my message today we're going to be looking at that and so i divided up the message into three questions three simple questions the first question is why is the spirit important why is the spirit important simple second question is the spirit divine in other words is the holy spirit god because if he's not god then it will be inappropriate for us to worship him right in fact we will be in direct violation of the first commandment have no other gods before me and then the final question is what the or how does the holy spirit help us that's our theme for the month it's the greatest help how then does the holy spirit help us so three simple questions what's the importance of the holy spirit is the holy spirit divine how does he help us hopefully by the end of the sermon we'll have answers to those questions in jesus name amen so please if you've got your bibles with me turn to john chapter 14 and we're going to start from verse 15. i'm reading from the esv john chapter 14. we're going to read from verse 15 to 17 then we're going to jump down and read john chapter 25 to 26. let me know if you're there say amen some of you are looking at the screen in it you're looking at the screen there so good and the bible reads this this is jesus speaking jesus says if you love me you will keep my commandments and i will ask the father and he will give you another helper to be with you forever even the spirit of truth whom the world cannot receive because it neither sees him nor knows him you know him for he dwells with you everybody say with you and will be in you everybody say in you jump down to verse 25 bible reads this again jesus speaking these things i have spoken to you while i am still with you but the helper the holy spirit whom the father will send in my name he will teach you everybody say teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that i have said to you so right there we see from jesus's own mouth some of the things that the holy spirit is gonna do so let's tackle the first question what is the importance of the holy spirit why should we as believers spend time study and seek and pray into relying on trust in the holy spirit i submit to you three simple reasons one he's personal everybody say personal if you think about god the father most of us can generally agree that when we think of god the father he's far up he's in the he is in the kingdom of heaven on his throne right and when you think about god the son we think he's far back in that in history and everything that he did was so far removed from our time but when you think about god the spirit he's deep within so just by proximity technically the holy spirit is closer to you than the father and the son did you catch that does that make sense and obviously jesus goes on to develop the theme he says that you know if you keep his commandments and obey his word the father and the son they will make their bold in us so the holy spirit is the one who literally brings the godhead to live inside every single one of us he's personal not only that the holy spirit is the one responsible for applying the bible truths that we believe and hold on to in our lives if you take for example the teaching that god is creator he created everything and that he sustains everything even now we take the teaching that jesus christ is the atonement sacrifice for our sins and that as a result of that we stand justified before god we're we're cool with god we're in right standing with god it's the holy spirit who takes those objective truths and marries those truths with our hearts so that we believe that's the work of the holy spirit he's personal second reason is that he's tangible everything that we experience in our christian walk is as a result of the holy spirit when we experience joy when we experience peace when we experience empowerment or or that courage to go out and preach the word like lydia prayed for that is the result of the holy spirit jesus put it this way in john 16 verse 8. he says when the spirit comes into the world he will do what he will convict the world of sin righteousness and judgment do you know that the holy spirit is the one who convicts us how many how many of you know conviction is real conviction is so real one time me and sharina was arguing in the car this is before we got married so i had time to escape yeah we were arguing in a car in a car there's no way out in the car that's the worst place to argue anyway i drove sharina back to her house now she's probably at home watching this as well her and lisa at home by the way they're all right but she's probably even laughing but i dropped her home and as she got out of the car she she closed the door as soon as she closed the door i thought i was in fast and furious i screwed away like scone boom straight down the road bus around i was out there didn't even give her time to say goodbye see you later love you babe none of that stuff happened that night i got to the first traffic light i was like wrong and strong like yeah that was sick well done bro like you see the way you pulled off from that yeah hard didn't have time to say goodbye got to the second traffic light i hope you didn't run over her shoe you know because like you drove a bit too fast you know what i'm saying like that's me having conversations with myself got to the third traffic light i said that was wrong man that was wrong fourth traffic light i spun the car around went straight back to her mom's house called her said babe i'm downstairs she came in the car i apologize even though i was right we're moving it we're moving it i apologize to her and then we squashed our beef and she got out of the car you know we saw it out everything was good but the point is that that conviction that i felt by the third traffic light even the second that was because the holy spirit was there and most of us when we go about our day-to-day lives and and we do things and we know that it's the wrong thing the holy spirit is there giving you that conviction that is evidence that the spirit is in you when you're feeling that conviction bar is talking about raising all of these taxes you're thinking hmm should i just do that tax return form differently you know you know you're going on a website downloading the form you're about to contact tj and you think ah no no no no that's wrong that's wrong that's the holy spirit convicting you and jesus said when the spirit comes he will convict you and so when you feel conviction that is proof that is evidence that the holy spirit is there living inside of you he's tangible last reason why it's important that we study the holy spirit is because he's real here's the thing if the holy spirit wasn't real there will be no christians in the history of humanity no one would be able to get saved paul said no one can say that jesus christ is lord except by the spirit there will be no christians at all anywhere if the holy spirit didn't exist so an answer to the first question is the holy spirit important yes why because he's personal too because he is tangible and free because he's real so let's move on to the next question then is the holy spirit divine in other words is the holy spirit god now the way the bible talks about the the divinity of the godhead the bible assumes that god the father is god it assumes it if you read the old testament there's no question about whether or not if yahweh is god we just know he's god in the beginning god created heavens and the earth the bible assumes that god the father is god in the new testament the bible affirms that god the son is god see all the letters all the epistles talk about jesus christ being god incarnate talks about his divinity when you read the gospels i don't see anybody walking on water today don't see anybody open in the eyes of leftist the way jesus did it affirms that jesus christ is divine now when it comes to the holy spirit the bible implies that the holy spirit is god did you catch that so god the father it assumes god the son it affirms and god the spirit it implies now we're going to read an example of that in acts chapter 5 verses 3 to 4. if you turn your bibles with me or look up at the screen i'll see you acts chapter 5 verses 3 to 4 i'm going to read really quickly now listen to this very carefully verse 3 says but peter said to ananias why has satan filled your heart to lie to who the holy spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land verse 4 while it remained unsold did it not remain your own and after it was sold was it not at your disposal why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart you have not lied to man but to who to god now we know peter was an orthodox jew he was a monotheistic jew that means he believed in one god so in these two verses verse three who does he say that ananias lied to the holy spirit who does he say that who did he say in verse four that he lied to god if peter was talking about two separate gods he will be guilty of blasphemy but he wasn't doing that so what we see that in peter's mind the holy spirit is god you see how the bible implies that the holy spirit is god not only that not only that the bible describes the holy spirit as possessing god-like attributes in other words jesus put it this way in john 16 when the spirit of truth comes he will lead you to all truth how could the spirit lead you to all truth if he doesn't know all truth that must mean that the spirit is omniscient right that he's unlimited in his knowledge i'll give you another example the bible speaks very clearly about the power of the holy spirit so much so that paul said in acts i think it's romans chapter 8 verse 11 he said that if the same spirit which raised christ jesus from the dead lives in you then he's able to quicken your mortal bodies now i don't know about you but i don't know anybody in the world who has been able to raise christ jesus from the dead anybody no only the spirit has that power only the spirit has the power to do that not only that i don't know anybody who's brought about the incarnation luke tells us in luke chapter 1 verse 35 that when when the angel appeared to mary and was telling mary that the holy spirit will come upon you he will overshadow you and you will be with child i don't know anybody else has been able to do that benny hinn can't do it bill johnson can't do it mike murdock can't do it bishop dad can't do it mk can't do it our church can't do it the only person who has power like that is who it's the holy spirit he's the only one with the godlike attributes to work things like that and finally the holy spirit this is a good one when we're talking about asking that we're asking the question is the holy spirit divine so we obviously we've looked at how the bible implies that he is that implies that the holy spirit is god the bible also lets us know that he has god-like characteristics and attributes and lastly the bible lets us know that the holy spirit does things that only god can do if you remember back in exodus pharaoh thought he was you know he thought he was a bad man remember pharaoh was holding all the israelites there then well i let my people go is that now i'm not going to do that god comes onto the scene and the bible lets us know that he he just plays of his heart like he hardens it one time and so the whole the scriptures is letting us know that god has access to human hearts now when we get into the new testament now and we understand that the spirit lives inside of every single one of us that lets us know that the holy spirit has access to our hearts the holy spirit is the one who's able to turn our hearts of stone into hearts of flesh in other words the holy spirit is the one who literally is able to turn us from unbelievers to believers only the spirit has that power and only god has that power and so we equate god and the holy spirit amen so that's the second question out of the way is the holy spirit divine we can answer that question and say yes because the bible implies it it it tells us that the spirit has the attributes of god and not only that he does things that only god can do so now we get to the last and probably the most important question is how does the spirit then help if the spirit is divine and we know that he is and we know that he is important how then can we stand up here this month and say he's the greatest help how can he help us how does he help us and i'm going to highlight three areas there's probably many more but i'm going to focus on free amen everybody say scripture the holy spirit has a teaching role everybody say sanctification the holy spirit has a purifying role and everybody says service the holy spirit has an empowering role scripture sanctification service scripture sanctification service scripture sanctification service slap a drill be on that and let's deal with the first one scripture the bible lets us know very clearly that the holy spirit was the one involved in the production of the bible i think it's second peter 1 verse 20 20-21 it literally says that the holy spirit carried men along as they wrote the bible so that means every idea every for every word was as a result of the holy spirit's work and so if the holy spirit was behind the production of the bible then that means the holy spirit can lead us to all truth in the bible right so that means we could also rely on the holy spirit to get insight from the bible right we can lean on the holy spirit for understanding so before you read before you study just open up the bible and say holy spirit i need your help here and he leads you to all truth i'll give you an example one time i remember years ago i prayed that god would help me understand what it meant when he when jesus said in matthew 5 to turn the other cheek for ages i thought that meant just be passive let people walk all over you until pastor p was teaching and he gave the understanding of that verse in such a way that actually it doesn't necessarily mean be passive it means defiance turn the other cheek they they saw turning the other cheek as being some form of like being submissive but actually when she was saying turn the other cheek he was saying give them the other cheek and what thing you know i'm saying and what like yeah slapped me up there slapped me up there you understand and that changed my understanding and that is an example of the holy spirit leading me to all truth from a prayer that i prayed years ago and the holy spirit does that now just a disclaimer you don't really hear this a lot but reading the bible is pretty simple can we agree reading the bible is simple understanding the bible that's hard yeah we all agree that's hard work i don't know anyone who's read through leviticus and understood everything on that page we've done it in uh in the gap study we spent so much time in leviticus my head was blown all the sacrifices and pigeons this and ox and that and lord i was tired or if you get to the history books i think it's second chronicles it has nine chapters of genealogies this one begat that one and that one begat this one and the names i can't even pronounce they're missiles just nine chapters or you get to the book of revelations sermons are revelations it's long isn't it revelations is not an easy book to understand you can read through it and you can read about the woman coming out of the water and the seven spirits like that brother told me but understanding it takes a bit of work it takes a bit of study that's why paul was able to tell timothy study to show yourself approved because reading the bible is simple understanding the bible takes work and so that's why personally i'm i'm somewhat against this whole thing about bible roulette you know when you open the bible and put your finger somewhere and that's the verse for the day and that i think that's a little bit lazy it's a little bit lazy it's a little bit careless and it's dangerous because what happens if you're a young guy or a young woman you're struggling with pornography and you flip the bible open and you land on a bit where jesus said if your eye causes you to sin and your hand causes you to sin you pluck it out and cry off what do you do do you take that literally some people have in church history you know and the deepest thing is that even if you did take it literally plucked out your eye and cut off one of your hands you can use the other hand you know what i'm saying [Applause] if your eye's gone you can just see your imagination it doesn't deal with the problem of lust that's because jesus said the last issue is a heart issue none of us can pluck out our hearts can we but guess who can work on our hearts exactly [Applause] well take another verse if you're doing this this bible relating if you open the bible and you land on i think it's luke 14 26 where jesus said if anyone wants to be my disciple then they need to hate their mother their father their brother their sister their wife their children their own life to be worthy of me some people use that verse to justify divorce because if you notice that verse doesn't say husbands and so you've got a whole bunch of men out there saying to their wives i'm gonna go to do missionary and be a missionary if you catch where i'm going i'll wait oh i'll wait let's put a grown photo that's for the grown folks and they use that against their wives because jesus didn't mention husbands in that verse and that's not what jesus was saying he was saying that even in the most intimate relationships we will prioritize him that doesn't mean divorce your wife regen and take another a final verse the final example is probably one of my favorites in proverbs the famous proverb train up a child in a way that he should go and when he's older he will not depart from it many christians read that as train up a child in the christian faith when he's older he will not depart from it and how they interpret that is they they read it as though it's a bible promise it's a covenantal promise proverbs wasn't written like that it's a wisdom book it was written to be memorable and general rather than theological and technical does that make sense so a lot of people will read that proverbs train up a child in a way they should go and then they commit to training up their child in the christian faith then the child grows up they leave the faith and they go back to god and blame him for their child walking away from the faith and you've got so many parents living condemned because they're blaming themselves for their child's abandon in the faith when it shouldn't be interpreted like that it's a general truth if you train up a child in anything generally speaking they'll hold on to it it's not a covenantal promise that's why some parents you're relying more on your parenting than the spirit of god for your child's salvation so you now become the holy spirit because you are now able to parent them in such a way that they will be saved it doesn't work like that so much so there's no grace for that ministry as well you will struggle what you need to do is come before the throne room of god and ask for grace in time of need you commit that child unto god and watch the holy spirit work might take 10 20 15 years the holy spirit will work trust him commit the child to him amen and be free from that condemnation in jesus name and so the holy spirit helps us with scripture he has a teaching role and second john i'm going to quickly flip over their second john chapter 2 verse 27 i'm going to quickly read it second sorry first john chapter 2 verse 26 and 27 john says this i write these things to you about dole about those who are trying to deceive you but the anointing that you received from him abides in you and you have no need that anyone should teach you but as his anointing teaches you about everything and is true and is no lie just as it is just that just as it has taught you abide in him now me and elder steve were talking about this this week just to disclaimer this verse doesn't say that you don't need any sound teachers to teach you how do i know that if we go to verse 18 literally john says children it is the last hour as you have heard that the antichrist has come in so now many antichrists have come therefore we know that it is the last hour verse 19 they went out from us but they are not from us for if they had been of us they would have continued with us but they went out that it might be complained that they are all not of us so we know from the historical context that there was a bunch of christians who were walking around telling believers that they had this anointing which gave them access to knowledge and so some christians they were being swayed by that they were saying okay maybe i need to get this access to almost like i don't know a reverend or a bishop writes books and says he's the only one with the truth of god and so everyone must go through his books to get to to god even though jesus said i am the way i am the truth and i am the life no one comes to the father except through me so these people were walking around saying that they had this anointing and so john is saying to them you don't need any of these false teachers to teach you so there's because there's some people who read that verse and they do holy spirit and vibes just me and the holy spirit me in private revelation if you're not careful you end up like some of the cults like jehovah's witness that's how jehovah's witness started that's how sda started that's how the movement started a bunch of people sitting by themselves getting private revelation from the spirit of god and it birthed out a whole movement so you've got to be careful and make sure that you check yourself against scripture and also fellowship with other believers amen because i find it hard to believe that the same spirit who inspired john to write you don't need anyone to teach you will be the same spirit who inspired paul to write in ephesians 4 that he gave to the church teachers is the holy spirit confused of course he isn't we've got to interpret it the right way so the holy spirit helps us with scripture we can go to him and we can go to sound teachers in the body of christ that's why if you're not plugged into bible studies on mondays with a gap or the art princesses or if on wednesday at art church or even you're not plugged into the art bible school or nbc for example which teaches you the foundational truths all of these things are put on so that you can have a better grasp of the bible that you read amen he helps us with scripture he has a teaching role the second s was sanctification the holy spirit has a purifying role now we already read that the holy spirit lives in us right the holy spirit purifies us from the inside out romans chapter eight if you quickly turn there i'm gonna spend just a couple seconds there romans chapter eight and i'm going to read from verse 16 or 15. it says this for you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear but you have received the spirit of adoption as sons by whom we cry abba father verse 16 the spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are what children of god that's what the holy spirit does in you as well he bears witness he gives you that assurance that you are a child of god whenever you go through your season of doubt and trust me we will go through our season of doubt the holy spirit will be there encouraging you more than anybody else and reminding you that you are a child of god that's what the holy spirit does so he purifies us not only that we know that galatians 5 22-24 talks about the spirit how he produces qualities within us called the fruit of the spirit love patience self-control long-suffering he produces those qualities inside of us as we obey and continue to trust in god's word and so that's what the holy spirit does he sanctifies us and obviously the last one is that the holy spirit transforms us into the image of christ his work is to do that we end up looking more like sounding more like talking more like jesus and it doesn't happen overnight for some of us it might be quicker than others but the point is that when you encounter the true and living god you don't stay the same something changes about you think about it me i never used to want to come to church ever my parents used to try and drag us to church i used to sit at the back vex face will screw up and because i went to a catholic church all i cared was for the bread and wine you know a little the bread away season that with a wine a bit take some of that in i wouldn't take anything in from the service wouldn't take anything in from the bible at all all of a sudden now i have an encounter with the holy ghost and now i'm here in front of you lord talking to you about the bible i've been a christian for over 10 years not by my worst but by the grace of god only the spirit can do that to somebody only the spirit can change someone from the inside out every other religion focuses on doing works to get to god the whole the christian religion is the only faith in the whole entire world that says god comes on the inside of you and he does the work on your behalf [Applause] you won't catch that anywhere else he has a purifying role he sanctifies us and the last s is service he empowers us for service now we know when we read the gospels jesus's ministry was literally empowered by the holy spirit so much so that the religious leaders kept saying that the work that jesus did was powered by the spirit of bell wherever his name is belzebub remember that guy they were accusing jesus his works of being done by a a demon spirit rather than the holy spirit get into the book of acts now and we see the holy spirit literally telling people where to go and where not to go jesus said in acts chapter 1 verse 8 when do you receive you will receive power when the holy spirit comes upon you to be my witnesses in all the earth the holy spirit is the one behind all of our service all of our mission work all of our church work all of our efforts to try and reach the lost world the holy spirit is the one galvanizing empowering and he does that how by giving the church gifts he gives the church gifts first corinthians 12 8 romans 12 verse 6 to 8. first peter 4 verse 10 was the other one ephesians 4 11 to 12. all of those passages there they give you a list of gifts that comes as a result of the holy spirit and the church is blessed with gifts amen we are powerful amen the bible says literally there is a variety of gifts available to us that we should seek those gifts amen turn to your neighbor and say they haven't ceased they haven't ceased so the holy spirit literally does that he sanctifies us he helps us with the scriptures and he helps us with service he empowers us he gives us these gifts so that we can go out in power and reach the lost world and so all of those things that the holy spirit does is what jesus promised that he would do in the chapters of john chapter 14 to 16. so as we spend this month focusing on the greatest help i want us to be encouraged and know that the spirit isn't just something that lives on the pages of scripture he's alive he is vibrant he lives inside every single one of us and he has a specific job and a specific function to help us in so many many different ways amen and the last thing that the spirit does this is a bonus one he glorifies the son any ministry that is centered around one person and elevates that one person you can tell that the spirit doesn't live there and we can say that with confidence because jesus said the spirit will talk not on his own authority he will talk everything that i tell him the spirit's job is to glorify the son and jesus said if i am lifted up he would draw all men unto himself and so there's some people sitting here right now listening online right now and the spirit of god is literally drawing you you are here not by accident not by chance not by coincidence you are here because the spirit of god is drawing you and he wants to reveal the sun in your hearts amen stop let me church [Music] and so when we think about the holy spirit and we think about the questions that i asked at the beginning is why is the holy spirit important he's important for so many reasons i just mentioned i mentioned free but there's so many more than that the holy spirit is important he's significant the holy spirit is god and that god lives inside every single one of us and the holy spirit helps us in so many ways helps us with scripture he helps us understand the scriptures he helps us by sanctifying us cleaning us from the inside out [Music] and he helps us with service so that we're empowered to minister we're empowered to serve we're empowered to reach the lost everything as a result that we do here in church outside of church as a witness to the world is as a result of the holy spirit he's the greatest help family he's the greatest help he's alive he's alive and kicking he's right here in our midst and even right now he's calling on people he's tugging on people's hearts even now he's been pulling and drawing on people some of us have even felt the holy spirit's conviction we felt his conviction and if that's you i'm calling you to come out if you over the course of the last few months you have felt the conviction of the spirit tugging on you telling you you should be living right you shouldn't be doing that bro you shouldn't be doing that sis if that's you i want you to come out and we're going to lay we're going to pray on you pray for you and if you're here and you're worried about i haven't felt that conviction and you're worried that you've been quenching the holy spirit because you know we can do that as well we can quench the holy spirit right we can grieve the holy spirit right and if that's you i want you to also come out so we can pray for you i want you to come out so we can pray for you and then the last person i want to speak to or invite to the front is anybody who doesn't know jesus and you want to know the son you want to know christ and you know that you have questions you don't have all the answers how am i going to make sense of this faith thing you don't need to have all the answers to those questions all you need to do is have an obedient and willing heart for you to come forward and literally repent and turn the other way and say that i'm going to trust in god i'm going to trust in christ i'm going to trust in the spirit and for the rest of us it's a general prayer i just want us to literally close our eyes and ask for the holy spirit as lydia prayed this morning for that boldness amen we want that boldness from the holy spirit to come upon us to be witnesses to be good servants to be good husbands to be good wives to be good friends to be good neighbors to be good sons to be good daughters to be good employers to be good employees amen we want the holy spirit who empowers every bit of our lives to literally come on the inside of us so that we can yield to him and live out this christian life the way that we were supposed to live it out in jesus name so come on let's lift our voices church we can pray to the holy spirit it's appropriate it's appropriate we can we can worship the holy spirit
