hey guys hurricane it's come back to you again today I wanted to answer a question that I'm getting awful lot recently and since I started doing Skype lessons and it's the sort of fastest way to play fast if it makes sense like that what's the sort of shortcut to be able to play quick and I'll say straight up there is no shortcut for doing it but in this video I'm giving you a brief hack that I teach to all my Skype students in a lot more detail that really opens up certain speedy elements for playing and I'm gonna use but I know it seems kind of patronizing to say it but I'm going to use the pentatonic scale because I don't want to exclude anybody I want to keep everyone involved and also I'm going to show you how you can advance it to make some more extreme shred concepts most people seem to think shredding is where your picking hand is moving at a million miles an hour and thinking that that will achieve the best result and more often than not it isn't the case at all most of the secret is in this fretting hand and I'm going to demonstrate that to you in a couple of lick ideas that I've developed over the years starting from now so from teaching for a little bit now and also listening to a lot of you guys in the comments seem to assume that you're picking might be the problem when it comes to playing fast and there's an element to it with certain picking licks like maybe this pentatonic scale differences totally get back where you dependent on single notes and going up and down where you have to pick when you're transitioning from one string to another however a very important part of my play my influences that's helped me no end and also maybe being left-handed as well I've gotten lazy with this hand one thing I look up to develop from players like Steve Vai Paul Gilbert ironically enough although he's famous for having alternate picking technique and maybe Amy James is being dependent on not legato but just hammer ons and pull off and maybe using the picking hand as minimalistic ly as possible and how I go about doing this would maybe be something along the lines of maybe taking a pentatonic scale leg and simply running down the scale achieve just with hammer-ons and pull-offs like for instance supposing we're doing a minor pentatonic as I say again I don't exclude anyone here but it's just my most basic example but for in second open fifth fret of the high e slide up to eight then pull off I want to do Jason Street in this case beef B string 8th fret and pull off the 5 then descend through the pentatonic scale this way [Music] it flows really really well and even if you didn't have to use the whole scale it's a really cool things I have when you just go it helps lets flow really nicely and the same thing applies to other scales I like to use I'm a big fan of linear scales where for instance you'll take one simple symmetrical if you like shape and move it up a simple shape move through the octaves but I'm not going to talk too much about those here in this case where I tend to go into a lot of detail with that with skype lessons but I like to do all these ideas where maybe could be where it'll be very very dependent on this hang that's a nice little legato look there for you another cool thing I like to do as well is double up sequences and use a lot of repetitive licks so for example and this might be a little sort of slight homage to Randy Rhoads in a way [Applause] [Music] that kind of technique were you picking there's little is physically possible I'm going [Music] in the B string [Music] another I did I like to use is when I'm coming back down through scale so for instance I could maybe do triplet triplet feel [Music] [Applause] [Music] it's a very very fast way of making the most out of this hand another cool thing that I like to do using the a minor pentatonic and this is something that I like to expand around all over the place I repetitive licks like this that plays that case was diminished like we just move up three frets you notice time we're not depending on this whole idea of going really speedy picking idea which science is boring as helll for a lot of people a nice look I like to do here is this one [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] you can marry it up with an elixir [Music] how's that one [Music] [Applause] [Music] another thing I like to do as well that boosts my technique is when I'm going up and down single strings is where I could be going legato yes and what's so cool with this is how good [Applause] you can really tamper with the order of things and it can create really really cool interesting bursts of speed but also a great way of getting this hand to come up quickly is I don't practice to a metronome I practice at my own pace whereby I play as fast as I understand in the first instance so supposing you were to take a lick like this similar to this before that kind of idea is similar to that [Music] because I learned that a long time ago I now know it very well but in the first instance what I was doing was that she just by playing [Music] and that way I was a sort of programming the sorted sequence of notes in my mind a notice with all of these lips I'm talking about this hand is taking a back seat and trust me you'll see once you start to put these ideas into practice and get this hand to work a little harder you'll notice a huge difference in your playing and I can promise you it will take you further forward in your technical plank in this video I'm using my Charvel San Dimas pro mod is loaded with pariah pickups the black heart and the only set so they're really really cool pickups been working with them for a couple of years now they're just a really really cool product the fantastic I've been up on the GB for a really long time the single Duncan JB in 59 set and this has much more like a 3d feel that really really awesome I love them to bits and if you wanted to go and grab some I have a coupon code then it's simply coupon go check it out you'll get a discount off your order thanks so much for watching this video you guys hope you've long you've seen if you'd like to find out more about these sort of shred concepts so to speak and how to enhance your playing please do not hesitate to book a skype lesson with me my details are on the screen now I look forward to seeing you really soon I've got loads of students now and they're playing is changing at an alarming rate it's so cool I would love to teach you see you soon
