The EVIL Secrets Behind Pinocchio

hello co-stars on Ben's sweetwood welcome back to another episode of generation films Disney's Pinocchio based on Carlo collodi's 1883 novel The Adventures of Pinocchio is a simple film with a simple message right wrong it's a dark film with a dark message but it's an important film one that cried about the evils of Hollywood long before the Harvey Weinstein's of the world were revealed to the general public the movie starts out with Jiminy Cricket a talking cricket singing the song when you wish upon a star [Music] jiminy begins to tell us the story of a wish coming true the story begins in lonely woodworker Geppetto shop where he has just completed work on a marionette of a young boy he names Pinocchio he then wishes upon a star that Pinocchio would be a real boy now I don't want to suggest that there is anything evil or nefarious about Geppetto at all he seems to be just a lonely father figure there are some creepy things about him like his being desirous of a young boy and his pet sexual predator fish but I'm going to chalk that up to his loneliness and nothing else anyway that night a blue fairy comes down from the sky and grants Gepetto's wish bringing Pinocchio to life and informing him that he's not a real boy but that he can become one by being brave truthful and unselfish or in other words by proving his moral character you must learn to choose between right and wrong the fairy tells him which is what the message to young viewers of this movie truly is how will I know Pinocchio responds the blue fairy exclaims your conscience will tell you she then assigns Jiminy Cricket the role of Pinocchio's conscience this is the first aspect of our biblical narrative in the film as the Blue Fairy assigning Jiminy Cricket to be Pinocchio's conscience creates a biblical narrative between the Blue Fairy and jiminy she says to jiminy i w Pinocchio's conscience now which characters in the Bible are granted this kind of responsibility well for one prophets but let's look at the language Lord high keeper of the knowledge of right and wrong the only person who could be the Lord high keeper of such knowledge would be God itself so who is Jimmy then what is his role Jiminy Cricket Jiminy Cricket Jiminy Cricket this is not the first time we have heard this name let's go back to a year before Pinocchio was released to the Wizard of Oz or how about three years before to 1937 Snow White jiminy is a common minced oath or a purposeful mispronunciation of a taboo or blasphemous word Jiminy Cricket is a minced oath for Jesus Christ and for Pinocchio to become a real boy he must follow the ways of jiminy in any case the ferry leaves and Geppetto brings Pinocchio to bed with him because that's what lonely father figures do and I don't want to hear another word about that so the next day Geppetto sends Pinocchio to school now realize the first thing Pinocchio is given on his way out into the world an apple sure apples are commonly known as something students bring their teachers but also note it is often the fruit depicted as the forbidden fruit Adam and Eve eat against God's will in the Garden of Eden Geppetto then tells Pinocchio as he chuckles pleasurably because again that's what lonely father figures do with their little boy marionette dolls that have just come to life and I don't want to hear another word about it in any case on Pinocchio's way to school two goons a fox Honest John and a cat Gideon instantly Scout Pinocchio and realize they can use him as a puppet and we're in strombolis marionette show we're the entertainment industry John tells Pinocchio of an easy road to success as an actor and bites the Apple here we see some disturbing images first from Gideon who after dusting off Pinocchio's behind is seemingly enamored by it but then is revealed to just be reaching into his pocket perhaps to steal now before dismissing that as reading too much into it next as John makes promises to Pinocchio about Fame and lights he tells him that he's a natural-born actor whiff and then taps him on the butt why would such physical characteristics matter in a child actor and why emphasize that part of Pinocchio's body it's incredibly disturbing and more than a subtle play by filmmakers to send a message about what Hollywood is about even back then one's body is traded for fame and for that's what Hollywood's about they then skip off to the world of lights and fame singing listen to the lyrics this song is cheerful but promises material gains to the aspiring actor a high silk hat and a silver cane a watch of gold with a diamond chain these are the promises that are made by the powerful and Hollywood to young people in order to lure them in and use them for their own gain the song is sarcastic it's great to be a celebrity an actor's life for me it's so clear how directly filmmakers are lambasting Hollywood and it's dark secrets as an aside I want you to watch as Jim Andy shows up and whistles for Pinocchio to come over to him observe the contrasts jiminy is on a green plant pleasing to the eye this is garden imagery again and as Pinocchio goes towards him we see green pastures surrounding him and jiminy warns Pinocchio to beware of temptation just as Adam and Eve were warned in the garden at the same time one can see that there is little green around John or Gideon the ground thereon is purposefully brown gray and dull also note the names Honest John and Gideon John the Baptist is a major New Testament character and Gideon is the name of an Old Testament war hero both characters have names that suggest trustworthiness perhaps symbolic for the allure of the lights of Hollywood ultimately jiminy cannot persuade Pinocchio to follow him and so he goes off with John and Gideon to strombolis puppet show notice how as they go away from jiminy they clearly move away from the garden like state to a place devoid of plant life completely human-made so Pinocchio joined Stromboli's show and he introduces Pinocchio is the only puppet who can sing and dance without strings which is exactly what the entire show and song that he sings is about during the show Pinocchio is constantly in the middle of unwanted sexual exploitation despite being just a boy but he's not just a boy because he's a puppet and in Hollywood it's okay to do whatever you want with your puppets at the end of the song Pinocchio finishes with the line while at the same time covered in strings because what is a Hollywood actor really but a puppet no matter the physical strings are not that's what he is and that's the message that the filmmakers are sending giving up jiminy proclaims this movie was not subtle with its messaging in the next scene Stromboli counts his money while Pinocchio sits on the table reveling in the affection he received from the audience now let me be clear Stromboli in every way is Harvey Weinstein in every way no I'm not saying that the filmmakers could see the future I'm saying that Harvey Weinstein is just one of many in Hollywood who did what he did there have been many a men just like him and that is true Disney is representing with Stromboli Stromboli makes promises about Pinocchio stardom he says promising Fame while at the same time delivering a somewhat disturbing innuendo when Pinocchio tries to leave and go home Stromboli then locks him away in a cage Pinocchio is his property to be used as he sees it Stromboli then tells Pinocchio that when he grows too old he will then use him for firewood just as Hollywood throws out aging actors who are no longer useable Pinocchio cries out but Stromboli threatens to beat him and then he blows Pinocchio a disturbing kiss and leaves now the Blue Fairy shows up and asked Pinocchio what happened and he lies to her this isn't necessarily relevant here but you must be wondering where the famous nose growing fits into this narrative the growing nose seems to me to be God's Way of punishing those who sin your nose is plain smack on your face unconceivable as one's evils will always be revealed the blue fairy that helps Pinocchio and Jiminy escape Stromboli but the movie takes an even darker turn Honest John and Gideon meet with the coachman at an inn John is bragging about making easy money tricking Pinocchio when the coachman asks if they'd like to make some real money and tells them the coachman is the embodiment of evil he is the guy who runs the child trafficking ring both symbolically and literally in the movie the coachman tells John and Gideon that he wants to bring these boys back to Pleasure Island which even takes them aback the coachman adds a literal reference here but also a double entendre for the loss of innocence that the boys experience on the island Honest John and Gideon are able to once again tempt Pinocchio into coming with them and they sent him off to Pleasure Island we're on arrival he and the other incoming boys are encouraged to a nod to the biblical sin Pleasure Island is full of ice but the inhabitants they're picking out fighting doing drugs and destroying things we also see demonic characters working for the coachman on the island soon it is revealed that the boys who are brought to the island are turned into donkeys as a moral jackass as they are and they are then stripped as they are just meat for predators now and sold into a slave trade Pinocchio doesn't become a full donkey while his friend lamp with does not because Pinocchio is a doll he does start to he halt like a donkey and grow donkey ears and a tail but I believe that because he's not quite as depraved as the others and still maintains some innocence he survives long enough to escape into perhaps even purify himself in a body of water when Pinocchio returns home Geppetto is missing [Music] and he discovers that in an attempt to find him his new father was swallowed by the whale monstro a clear reference to the prophet Jonah in the Bible who when ordered by God to travel to Nineveh and warn its citizens to repent for their sins or face God's wrath disobeys takes off on the sea in a different direction and is swallowed by a giant fish when Jonah finally agrees to go to Nineveh the fish vomits him out and he convinces the people of Nineveh to repent the story of Jonah represents the ability to repent and be forgiven by God Pinocchio goes to save his father who is bearing the punishment for Pinocchio sins on Pleasure Island in being brave though Pinocchio himself is redeemed for his disobedience to the Blue Fairy and jiminy as Pinocchio attempts to be contrite Geppetto just forgives him picks Pinocchio up and Wiggles his nose against Pinocchio's because again that's what lonely father figures do with their little boy marionette dolls that have just come to life and I don't want to hear another word about it eventually Pinocchio devises a way out of the whale and they go home whereas Pinocchio has proven himself moral the Blue Fairy turns him into a real boy or better yet being a real boy is about maintaining one's essence impurity something that is lost in pursuit of fame and fortune in Hollywood in conclusion there are two related narratives throughout this movie the biblical narrative and the Hollywood is evil narrative Pinocchio must avoid the allure of carnal abuse of Hollywood and instead follow the path of the Bible or really Jiminy Cricket in order to gain his humanity this is a dark movie and the obsession with young boys throughout the film is beyond disturbing but an explicit signal from the filmmakers as to the dark secrets of Hollywood at the time we should have listened back then well that's all the time we have for today I hope you enjoyed the video please like comment
